Aethertouched [OOC/PG-16/Not Accepting]

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to reply with what one of you three pointed out.  Maurice is very vulnerable to AOE attacks.  Which there seem to be a lot of.  But yeah the 5 minute timer was to keep him in line with some of the many powerhouses we already have.  If it comes down to it and you really need me to, I can lower the duration.  But for the sake of saying it outside of the Skype chat and having this as a reference, combat won't be an issue for either party.  That I can confirm (meaning Maurice or his opponent).  Mostly looking forward to opening up Maurice as a character,  not a fighter.  And if you haven't noticed yet, he's yet to hurt anyone other than that clown in his past.  But I'll leave the rest to his character development as I'm now really invested in Maurice.

Neph's comment is understandable but slightly incorrect. Calder assumed his father got him the soul-board, but there's nothing to mention about it actually simply being the manifestation of his soul - which is likely where the confusion stemmed from. I've added a note to clarify this, hopefully to deter this miscommunication from my app.

Okay so edited. I added a second "special move" because I figured I had a bit of time to tweak still if it's too much. I'll just post the powers part here.

[spoiler=Ability]Fire Generation: Can create and, mostly, control fire. This control is limited to being able to move the flames at will, which requires both energy and concentration, and to manipulate its form to a small extent. The power of this can range from ineffective to explosive depending how much passion Valerie puts into it. When combined with her typical fighting style this can be quite devastating. The power of her flames could burn an entire house down in matter of minutes when full forced. She has a perchance for doing over-the-top attacks and calling out names when she does. It's usually different even for the same attack. However a favorite of hers is...

Blazing Soul Phoenix Piercer!: An attack that uses the thrusting power of her spear to send out a powerful blast of flames in a straight line. Highly destructive but also quite inaccurate as it's very telegraphed and literally straight-forward.

Spiraling Barrier of Infernal Flames!: By spinning her spear above her head Valerie can create a column of flames that surround her, twelve feet high at most. The inside of the column could fit up to 3 average sized people at most. These flames are extremely hot and anything touching it would be caught on fire. Minor protection against projectiles, but anything launched at high speed and/or force will break through. It's quite hot inside and if used for longer than a few minutes, Valerie would pass out.

Will be replacing Kokoro's app with the below.  Please judge and stuff at your earliest convenience :)

[spoiler=The Blind Sightseer]

QLpGSs5.jpg
"I didn't even need eyes to see how awesome that was!"

iU8EggM.png

Name: Usagi Yoshida

Age: 17

Soul Manifestation: Bo staff

[spoiler=Appearance]Vq3aYc6.jpg
Standing at 5'3" and weighing 107 pounds, Usagi's most prominent visual feature is a white blindfold with eyes drawn on them.  Supposedly she owns several of these, as the eyes change often.  If she does, they most certainly are stored in the large green hiker's backpack she's typically seen with, which contains other essentials for any number of situations, including but by no means limited to medical supplies, emergency food, and when not in use, her cane for those times when echolocation just doesn't cut it.

There is a very distinct purpose that she wears blindfolds instead of sunglasses, being that her eyes are glazed white and the skin between and around them has nasty burn scars that mar an otherwise-ordinary appearance.

iU8EggM.png

[spoiler=Personality]
Usagi is a girl who wants to see all there is to be seen...figuratively speaking, of course.  The lack of eyesight won't stop this one from enjoying the road ahead, wherever it may lead.

The first thing one would learn about Usagi is that she's a very upbeat individual.  Pretty much always whistling a cheery tune as she goes around, this travel-happy girl seems to always have a smile on her face and a spring in her step.  Even if something bad happens that leaves her feeling down, it's seldom something she won't just sleep off before being fine again the next day.  However, staying in the same place for too long can frustrate her.

Another trait the keen observer will pick up on quickly is that she knows a good deal when she sees one.  Growing up the sole heir to a big company, it was only natural that her parents teach her about business and value.  As such, she's a sharp negotiator, but don't expect her to get too into said negotiations.  Usagi is a free spirit through and through, and isn't too happy with her corporate heiress position, and since she associates in-depth negotiating with said status, she tries to avoid it whenever possible.

Usagi also loves to travel, as stated; it's her greatest passion in life.  She's a very free-spirited type who believes that staying still in one place should only be acceptable once you're dead, and that nothing should ultimately stop a person from chasing their passions.  This belief is something she'll apply to both herself and others, and if she learns somebody wants to do something but simply can't, rest assured she'll help get them started, provided it's nothing harmful to others.

Indeed, that's another thing about Usagi; she's a very good-natured girl.  Aside from travel, one thing she tries her best at is giving someone a pick-me-up if they're having a bad time.  Alternatively, if they're already having a nice day, Usagi doesn't mind at all sitting down and having a friendly chat.  Generally the one who would talk for hours on end if you let her, Usagi is a person who is interested in hearing stories from other people, but doesn't know when to stop telling her own unless asked to.

Having said all this, as someone who is constantly moving from one place to another, Usagi's got a couple downfalls of her own that stem from this constant travel.  As previously mentioned, she gets frustrated easily if she remains in one place for too long, but this is also due to a general lack of patience.  When she's set on something, she wants it done fast and doesn't like waiting for things.  Likewise, if she feels that someone or something isn't going anywhere anytime soon, Usagi will most likely just ditch it and move on to something else.

[spoiler=Biography]
One trope that always has amused Usagi is the anime protagonist whose parents travel the world for business and leave the kid at home.  Because in her case, this was far from the reality; she's the sole heiress to a wealthy company working hard to break new ground in virtual reality, and while President Yoshida was hard at work in Usagi's native Kyoto, the girl herself was typically flown around the world with her mother on many a business trip to learn the trade up close so that she'd know what she was doing when her time to run the business came along.

Of course, her wanderlust is a trait she inherited from her mother, and the two were frequent sightseers wherever work took them.  The Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Great Wall of China, and the Grand Canyon, among many others, are tourist hotspots the pair of mother and daughter checked out between business trips, always returning to Kyoto eventually to spend time with dear old dad before the next trip.  To Usagi, this was the textbook definition of mixing business and pleasure.  Eventually she knew enough about the job to start working for the company young as a second representative of the company.

Her first business trip could have gone better.

During a flight to Moscow, an engine malfunction led to the plane going down.  The passengers - including Usagi herself - were of course panicked.  After the flaming aircraft hit the ground a couple hundred miles short of a Russian airport, many of the passengers didn't even manage to get out alive.  Usagi only managed to do so because the pilot had cut her seatbelt with a knife, saving her from a melted buckle and a burning demise.  However, of the survivors, she was perhaps the closest one to dying, with burns all over the body and the optic nerves burned out from the light and heat.  This plane crash may have cost Usagi her eyesight, but it was what turned her into an Aethertouched.

The next few months were Usagi's all-time low point.  Unable to leave the hospital of a foreign nation due to second and third degree burns over the vast majority of her body, with a scarred body and no eyesight, Usagi's parents had to take a short leave of abscence from work to watch over her and her recovery.  The burns healed themselves with time, but adjusting to her newfound blindness was a much bigger hurdle, even with her new Aethertouched powers.  She had to learn how to read braille, navigate a room without seeing (which got easier once she realized she could use echolocation), and more tasks she never thought she'd actually have to learn.

As soon as she was healed up, Usagi's family demanded she return home immediately.  Refusing to fly again after her near-death experience, the train rides across Russia and subsequent boat trip back home gave her more time to adjust to and accept that she wasn't going to see anymore.  And upon returning to Kyoto, it was back to the hospital, but for a different purpose.  Having just recovered from her burns, her family wanted Usagi to have skin grafts done over her burned body, both for the reasons that it would make for a more pleasing leader's face in time, and that her folks couldn't stand the sight of Usagi with her burn scars.  That was more months spent in the hospital, for surgery and rehabilitation from having almost all the skin on her body replaced.

However, Usagi somehow soldiered on through the entire process, and stepped back onto the streets of Kyoto once again, the only burn scars remaining being around and between her eyes at her unusually-stern insistence.  For a long time, she wasn't even allowed to leave Kyoto again.  However, when it became clear that she'd grown unable to stay in one place for long, she was permitted to travel once more, this time on her own terms, but on the strict conditions that she not leave Japan and that she contact her parents daily.

Even this was merely a week ago.  Free at last, Usagi darted all around the Kansai region before returning to her usual pace.  Her first destination now that she's back to being as normal as she can be?

The greatest place to test how adapted she's really become to her blindness.  Big and bustling Tokyo.

[spoiler=Aethertouched Ability]
In addition to the below powers, Usagi has keener senses of hearing and smell than many Aethertouched due to her lack of eyesight, similar to how a regular blind person would have stronger senses.  Usagi's hearing is sharp enough to the point that she's capable of using echolocation in most situations, and her sense of smell is also sharp enough to track down those around her.

Double Vision: One of Usagi's illusion powers.  This one allows her to create a fake Usagi which moves along a pre-determined path and vanishes when damaged or when reaching the end of its path.  Usagi can only have one fake active at a time, but it doesn't take much to use this ability.

Now You See Me...: Usagi's secondary illusion power is capable of rendering her invisible.  However, since she relies on echolocation, this ability is generally impractical since she's always making noise.

My Perspective: Usagi's strongest illusion power.  This illusion is one that swallows up light, nulling it in a 20-meter radius around Usagi.  This effectively renders everyone around her blind for as long as they're in the radius.  Keeping this active can be a drain on Usagi if maintained for too long, so it's usually the first or last trick she'll use.

[spoiler=Misc]
Usagi's whistling is actually so that she can use echolocation to make out her surroundings.

When writing, Usagi uses scented markers so that she can smell where she's already written.  She can't make out the specific characters, however.

Since she relies on echolocation, her perception can be thrown off if the same noise surrounds her on all sides, such as in heavy rain or noisy crowds.

Prone to seasickness, which makes overseas travel difficult since she refuses to sit in an airplane.

Because she did a lot of traveling, Usagi's very skilled in English by necessity.

[spoiler=APPPPP]

4vIoZ29.jpg

"Now, don't take your eyes off me!"

Name:  Shindou Reira (レイラ 新導 lit. Reira Shindou)

Age: 17

Sex: F

Birthday: 4 July 1998

Blood Type: O

[spoiler=Appearance]

[spoiler=Full appearance]

BHrrFrA.jpg?1

Reira stands at an average 5’3” (163 cm for you non-dumb Americans out there) She has long, flowing blonde hair that reaches down to her waist, as well as light blue eyes that would indicate at her being a foreigner. At a glance she looks like an ordinary Japanese schoolgirl, but her body is slightly more built and fit, perhaps due to circus training. Her ordinary outfit is her circus costume; A pantsless outfit with crimson jacket slung over it, thigh-high boots, and a tophat. Though, when off the circus, and is just walking around Tokyo by herself, she usually dresses in low-cut brand t-shirts with spats underneath a miniskirt. For colder weathers, throw on stockings and a jacket and that’s about the only difference.

[spoiler=Personality]Reira is a bit of oddball, to say the least. She’s got a haughty, cocky confident exterior that just screams “Tsundere”, but she’s actually quite playful and mischievous, and is usually seen with a confident smirk on her face. Still, she’s got a sense of pride that thinks she is a cut above everyone else. Being raised in a travelling circus with strong discipline and harsh training sessions, Reira has a stern, hardheaded personality that rarely wants to admit her mistakes and wrongs, and even gets very flustered really easily if someone points out a mistake she made, usually by claiming it’s a fluke.

On-stage, she’s like a completely different person however. Playing up to the image of “Idol Magician”, she becomes a pure, sweet girl that gets the crowd pumped up for the subsequent segments of the Kinoshita Circus’s show. After about 3-4 years of living with the persona, she’s mastered it enough to turn to her idol self on the drop of hat, even in casual everyday situations.

Reira usually maintains her cool and confident personality through most situations, but there is one or two things that really upset her. For one, she has a bit of a complex regarding families. Being raised as an orphan, she would often look at happy families in jealousy, and has made “finding Mama and Papa” one of her goals in life. Also, very inexperienced in dealing with romance. Very very much so. Since she’s only educated up to middle school before switching to the circus life entirely, she has no experience with men whatsoever. The only men she knew was the other circus performers and the fans she sign autographs for after every event. Thus, when someone approaches her with romantic feelings, she flips out and gets embarrassed beyond all belief.

[spoiler=Backstory]The baby which would later be known as “Shindou Reira” was discovered at the then-small Kinoshita Circus based on Yokohama. Nobody knew who the parents of said baby were. All that was known is that she was approximately 5 months old when discovered on the benches of Kinoshita, and that she had blonde hair and blue eyes. Fliers and newspaper spots were put up for several months in an attempt to find the parents, but nobody ever responded.

In the end, Kinoshita took in the baby and raised her as their own child. The name “Shindou Reira” has two meanings. The family name, “Shindou” means “New age”, which refers to the ringmaster’s hopes that the child will one day be a performer that can bring the circus to new heights of popularity, while her full name Shindou Reira is a pun on Cinderella, referring to the child’s western appearance.

Time passed and Shindou Reira was raised by the Kinoshita circus. She attended school like everyone else, but when she got home, instead of playtime, she would attempt dangerous circus stunts. She’s been leaping off trapezes, juggling bowling pins and pulled bunnies out of hats from the age of 7. The circus prospered and gradually got more and more popular, now moving from Yokohama to having a permanent fixture on Odaiba. Throughout this time, Reira and the Ringmaster started to develop a father-daughter bond. Reira saw him as her beloved papa and the ringmaster saw her as his own biological daughter. It was a happy family, all things considered.

However, a certain incident occurred on one of Kinoshita’s performances abroad. During a high rope stunt that Reira was involved in. The plan was that she would “accidentally” fall off and bounce off the safety net underneath, and would be caught by a harness after bouncing, seamlessly flowing the act into a cirque de soleil-based flying act. However, on the day of the performance, Reira’s fall looked so realistic that it shocked an elderly woman in the front seats, enough to give her a fatal heart attack.

The show was put on halt. Everyone from the circus rushed out to give first aid to the woman, but to no avail. Audiences who knew what was going on made calls to 911, all the while Reira just sat on the safety net, completely dazed. This is the incident that would later trigger the manifestation of Reira’s soul. After the accident, the circus was hit by a lawsuit that damaged the reputation and left them in dire financial straits. Reira hated seeing her papa look so down. Looking so stressed and deadbeat. She wanted to help, somehow.

And then, her soul manifested itself. She gained the ability to clone herself and acquired newfound knife-throwing skills. “This is it!” she thought. “This is how I can help papa!” Much to her delight, she’s right. Her cloning act became wildly popular, enough to not only repair the bad name of Kinoshita Circus, but also help it prosper once more.

[spoiler=Abilities]

Aethertouch Enhancements

Reira’s main Aethertouch enhancement is her superhuman flexibility, speed and nimbleness. Being already high above the average human in terms of fitness due to her circus training, this is further enhanced to the point where she can now effortlessly grab onto a trapeze with one hand, swing and backflip off it, land on the back of her feet, and hang upside down on it. As well as other superhuman feats.

She also gained the ability to accurately throw knives. Granted, she already was a trained knife-thrower prior to gaining her aethertouch, but after she got it, she got crazy good. She can comfortably hit faraway targets with high accuracy, and has even sliced an apple off the head of an audience while blindfolded.

Soul Manifestation: Long, rapier-like throwing knives

[spoiler=Aethertouched Abilities]

Four of a Kind

Reira’s one and only Aethertouched power. This is the ability to create up to four identical copies of herself, each with a degree of independent thought. Originally she is only able to create clones on close proximity with herself, but after experimenting, she learned that she can turn the knives she manifested into clones, and vice-versa. This leads to a very versatile ability, as she is able to throw a knife, have it turn into clone, have the clone throw a knife and have that knife be turned as well. As long as there’s no more than 4 clones present, she can repeat this basically endlessly.

A secondary ability of “Four of a Kind” is that, with enough concentration, she can alter the clone’s appearance to that of anyone. As long as she can envision that person in her head, her clone would be changed to look exactly like that. However, it does come with a weakness. The voice wouldn’t change one bit, so it’s not suited for infiltration unless she keeps silent.

[spoiler=Trivia]•Reira speaks fluent English and Japanese, and she knows a small bit of French as well.

Seiyuu: Rie Kugimiya (Duh)

•The Kinoshita Circus is a real circus that exists in Japan. I doubt they have an ambiguously foreign magician that can clone herself though.

No problem. My post will happen either today or tomorrow. I have a lot of stuff to do this weekend so I can't guarantee an exact time of post.

It's not a problem. I'm doing some moving in addition to voting tomorrow. I'll keep my eyes open for your post.

Sorry, this took way too long to start for me, and with that my interest dwindled, going to withdraw my application before having made a post so no mess, no foul I suppose. Thank you for the acceptance and review, Calder was a fun application to make, and good luck everyone on the role-play.
