[spoiler=Opening Cutscene: The Murderer]

The injustice still rang.

He'd gladly admit that he'd taken a life. He'd never take the title of murderer. Hadn't Hayenter been his best friend? Did anyone really think that he wasn't as stunned as they were, if not more, that the drake would turn traitor?

General Raxos had claimed that the Sorcerors needed the Drakes' support, and that his evidence against Haventer wasn't conclusive. This would have been sound — Halverne had threatened to withdraw Drake support — except for the fact that the threat was emptier than a vacuum. They couldn't possibly leave, as if they did, they would be crushed by the Nocturnus-Metarex alliance in moments.

Only a perfectly integrated amalgamation of Zoah, Voxai, and Anthro technologies were still keeping the massive floating Citadel secret from the terrifying alliance of the Nocturnus Echidnæ and the vile, autotrophic Metarex. Without the Chaos and Sol Emeralds he and Blaze provided, the cloaking device would never function, nor would the other systems have nearly enough energy; without the Voxai's psionic abilities, the Citadel's location would be broadcast to the Nocturnus-Metarex; and without the Zoah's heavy defenses, the few ambitious commanders who happened to stumble upon the Citadel during a lapse in Chaos or Sol energy would have been able to contact the rest of the Nocturnus-Metarex fleet and demand a total siege. Nothing could stand against Gizoids, Nocturnus Decuria, and elite Metarex strike units. Shade, the converted Decurion who was now the leader of the Opposing Forces Intelligence Department of Sorcerors, and Emerl, the only one of the brutal Gizoid weapons to have acquired sentience, were living proofs of this discouraging statement.

The Drakes provided nothing of significance to the Sorcerors' cause. About the only thing they offered was the ability to spew flames, which were enormously effective against Metarex soldiers, and slightly so against non-Gizoid Nocturnus. Even that, though, was redundant. If human flamethrowers couldn't settle a match against a Metarex commander, say, or a particularly tough High Prætorian, Blaze could just Sol-jump to the scene and annihilate the enemy!

There had to be some bona-fide reason they were so willing to throw him away, though, and it was one they weren't willing to tell him. The question wasn't why they refused to allow a fellow Councilor access to this no-doubt grievous message — it was in case he was planning to take a leaf out of Haventer's book — but rather, what could be so important that they would dismiss their second-best (best? that never was settled) soldier to hold it at bay? Some ace up the Drakes' sleeves, perhaps?

At least they'd given him a chance to return, no matter how slim it was, he decided, though he was still fuming. The agent he was meant to rescue had probably been executed already, and even if she hadn't, no one soldier had ever stormed a Metarex fortress alone...

His fury redoubled. The Sorcerors had, in effect, executed him. If he tried to rescue the possibly-alive agent, he'd die, and if he didn't, he'd be killed by a Nocturnus detachment anyway... This wasn't how he'd imagined his death at all. He'd prefer either some valiant sacrifice, or a peaceful death in Sorcerous company. Even in the former case, Blaze would be alongside him in his final hour...

His rage uncontrollable, Sonic kicked a large rock in his path. It split in pieces; the smaller one skidded away, lighting a spark as it struck another rock in the path, while the larger chunk went sailing into the atmosphere, destined for parts unknown.

Suddenly realizing the phenomenon he'd just discovered, the convicted hedgehog intercepted the still-moving smaller cobble at an even more alarming pace, and then redoubled to snatch up the stone his target had inadvertently struck. He might — might — be able to return with his dignity intact...

@K9991: Uh... thanks! ^_^;

@finalflash: Let me put it this way; he had a very good reason. The Sorcerors are the only ones resisting the Metarex-Nocturnus ibidem, so if they were found...

@Fenrir: It's loosely based on Dark Brotherhood, yes, but it's really a different continuity. I guess I took SatAM and made it sci-fi, and a lot better.

@finalflash: Of course they will. The next chapter doesn't have any of the Sorcerors in it at all.

Oh, I should probably mention that everyone is decent in this world.
