Silent Hill

Seeing the bloody nurses and doctors was what did it for me. The first left the most lasting impression' date=' but they improved the horror elements in the later games (with the pulsating walls and such). The nurses in the other games looked far creepier and some even carried guns in the second (and third, I believe) game.

But are they actually POWERFUL?

The ones that can hold you in place = not really

The ones with the pipes or planks = moderate damage and swing kinda fast

The ones with guns = High damage, but take a while to raise the gun

well what weapons are at your disposal by the time you fight them?

By the time you reach the hospital level in ANY game, you'll have about 2 melee weapons, a pistol, and a shotgun. The nurses won't be a problem whatsoever unless they manage to gang up on you. You can melee a nurse to death quite easily and is actually recommended to conserve ammo for tougher enemies.

simple matter of circle strafe and hit the nurse then?

Circle-strafing is a little harder to pull off in the Silent Hill games as opposed to FPS games. The nurses are so slow that you can actually stand right in front of them and wail on them with the melee weapon. They get stunned for some time when hit with a melee weapon, making it easier to get multiple hits off at one time.

well what type of melee weapon would you have by then?

Usually, you'd have a steel pipe by the time you'd get to the hospital area. It has good range, decent speed, and does decent damage.

By far the best melee weapon in the entire series - unless you want to count the Light Saber you find in Silent Hill 3 as a bonus weapon...

figures. What enemies is the pipe ineffective against then?

Usually, bosses or the larger basic enemies. The pipe is more effective against enemies of humanoid size or smaller. Anything else takes way too many hits and the enemies usually don't flinch from getting hit.

Most of the time, it's better to just run away from the enemies to conserve health and ammo.

yeah' date=' that's one of the major things working against me (I prefer to kill EVERYTHING). You ever try to kill everything?

[/quote']

No. There are rooms where the enemies will keep respawning no matter how many times you go in there. Also, there tend to be bigger swarms of enemies and more larger enemies in the later stages. It's essentially a waste of time and ammo. Best to just clear a way through the crowd and move on.

It's easier to kill all the enemies in games like Resident Evil or Doom. It's not advisable in Silent Hill since (unless you're playing on another playthrough and upped the ammo multiplier) the ammo is scarce and in fairly short supply.

yeah' date=' and that's among my biggest frustrations: scarce ammo (unless you have something to compensate)

Tell me, how much compensation do the melee weapons offer?

You could get through the games using just melee weapons just fine until you come up to a boss. Those fights basically REQUIRE you to use firearms since their attacks to absurd damage at close range. There are some bosses that even drop you in one hit if you're too close.

Example 1: The boss in the elementary school in the original game (a giant alligator) can kill you in one hit if you're too close to its mouth when it's open. The only way to kill it is to fire your shotgun directly into its open mouth. About 2-3 good shotgun blasts will drop it.

Example 2: The boss of the shopping mall in Silent Hill 3 (a giant worm) has a lunging attack that kills you instantly if it makes contact. Also, any damage you inflict to it when it's head is not exposed is reduced to about 1/5 the damage it would normally inflict. It bites you if you get too close to it, so a firearm is the ideal choice. It doesn't take many shots to drop it if you hit its exposed head.

interesting. So which enemies in Silent Hill are melee weapons NOT recommended on?

Anything bigger than normal humanoid size. The melee weapon just won't have as much impact. Also, enemies that are kinda fast. It's better to just shoot them.

On another note:

Who else remembers the amusement park from Silent Hill 3? Dear lord, the fun house creeped me the $! out the first time I saw it...especially the last area of it. (shudders)

The skinless dogs from the first and third games are a good example. Later in the game, they learn how to run and circle-strafe at the same time. The Pendelum monsters from the third game fly through the air at pretty decent speed and they're hard to hit with a melee weapon since they're in the air.

As for the amusement park fun house....CREEPY. The narrator voice was just creepy. For the first few areas, it sounds like a typical tour track - until it gets to the last room. Then it goes on to say that they don't want you to leave. When I heard that, it made me jump and want to get the #&$! out of that area as fast as possible - which was good considering that a red cloud of death was following me at the time...

Impressive to say the least. And red cloud? What are you talking about?

In the final 2 areas of the funhouse, there is a red cloud that is trailing behind you at a fast pace through out the corridors. If you touch it, it kills you instantly. You have to outrun it though the corridors. During this time, the voice is going on about wanting you to stay and the walls are moving around at certain points to try and cut off your escape. It's one of the most annoying parts of the game - almost as bad as if you don't turn off the roller coaster.

does it move faster than you or pretty much the same speed? If it's the latter then all you need is to know your way around and you're fine

It slowly creeps up on you in speed. You do get a small head start before it comes after you (about 2-3 seconds) and you'll know when it's getting too close because you'll see the red glare on your back. Luckily, there are no enemies in the funhouse, so all you have to do is just run.
