All originals are better imo. With the exception of All Along The Watchtower. The Jimi Hendrix version is freaking awesome.

Some can actually do the song the same or even better than the original. Like Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal or Fall Out Boy's Beat It (both covers of Michael Jackson) are pretty good.

 

But i think it depends on the song and how well the artist/band can play it.

Sir, it would be important to point out now that Alien Ant Farm did it wrongly. By makin' it upbeat and all, they missed the point on why Jackson sang it as is: all about domestic abuse.

 

No, don't interpret this as a message of hate: Alien Ant Farm's cover is decent within its limits.

Just an addendum:

 

Heart's and Celine Dion's renditions of Alone sucked.

 

Jimi Hendrix' rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner was one I'd like to see emblazoned onto the Americans someday.

 

Britney's rendition of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' I Love Rock & Roll is the bomb. Yankovich's renditions, also.

As normally, I vote on my own poll after a short while and not immediately.

 

The version that I hear first, I always like it better.

Yeah, I like Korn's 'Another Brick in the Wall' better than Pink Floyd's.

I like After Forever's 'The Evil that Men do' better than Iron Maiden's.

And I dare to bet that I'd like the original better if I heard them first.

I guess I just 'register' the one I hear first as the real 'original'.

 

Furthermore, I DID listen to Metallica 'Nothing Else Matters' before I listened to Apocalypta's version, and I also like Metallica's version better. I'd be ashamed if I didn't.
