FFR's 5 Tips to Making Your RP Posts AWESOME!

Recommended Posts

[spoiler=Tip #1]

Make your posts as detailed as possible. You can describe every weapon and every character into specific detail. You can even take it at as far as describing the specific detailing of a type of weather, unless the host says it is against his RP Rules to do so.

Examples:

ND: Not Detailed

D: Detailed

ND: A mysterious man was approaching Merz with the intention if killing him!

D: A mysterious man, who was wearing a long black trench coat, with black rain boots and a black hat, and had a black revolver in his hand, was approaching Merz with the intention of killing him!

ND: It was sunny outside!

D: The sun was just now reaching it's most brightest point of the day, around noon time, and it was really sunny outside because of it!

ND: Merz drew his blade and pointed at the enemy that was drawing closer with every step!

D: Merz drew his sword, which had a golden blade and was accompanied by a crystal handle, and pointed it at the enemy that was drawing closer with every step!

[spoiler=Tip #2]

Explain things. Explain things, such as how you got to a place, out and make sure everyone understands. All the players in the RP gain knowledge of the event that is currently happening, and the next poster has more detail to go off of to boot!

ND: The assassin arrives at the base...

D: The assassin, who was currently in Alaska, flips on his communication device and begins to give a command through it. Forty five minutes after the communication a helicopter was now flying over head and the assassin grabbed on to the extending rope latter. After a short flight the assassin arrives at the base...

[spoiler=Tip #3]

Spell everything out. Spell things like numbers and acronyms out. This is a great and simple way to upgrade your posts quality and length. This is usually done by people who have trouble thinking of things to write.

ND: 857 miles left to go, we were almost home.

D: Eight hundred fifty seven miles left to go, we were almost home.

ND: He fired the HEL at me with great force!

D: He fired the Hugely Epic Lazer at me with great force!

[spoiler=Tip #4]

The three dot rule! This is a nice little trick I like to use A LOT! The three dot rule leaves a character talking ominously or ends a post ominously. I'm referring to using "..." after your posts or your characters speech. Now this little change in your posts sounds like it doesn't do much, but it can in actuality still give you a little boost especially if you can't think of anything.

ND: "I have "special" plans for you." The assassin said as he slowly closed the door.

D: "I have "special" plans for you..." The assassin said as he slowly closed the door...

[spoiler=Tip #5]

Have Fun! ...No...Seriously that's the fifth tip. This is your time to RP guys, this is your time to have fun and meet some new people along the way. If you have an attack that causes it to rain gummy bears all over the place then do it. RP's/RPG's are supposed to be fun and enjoyable, a little bit of humor and fun every once in awhile is good even in something as serious as an RP/RPG about millions of casualties. The point I'm trying to get across is...

DON'T BE AFRAID TO HAVE A LITTLE FUN WITH YOUR POSTS!!!

The "..." gets really annoying sometimes in RPs, especially when people tend to end every sentence with them. Even the ones that aren't quotes.

Honestly, that's the stupidest tip I've ever read for anything.

Although, in my last RP, I did use it whenever Zero talked, but another person in the RP ended every sentence like that. =/

Yeah, I'm not saying to use it ALL the time I'm just saying you can use it when you've run out of ideas....

Tip five sucks in ways that should be incredibly obvious.

I admit it could have been better, but you don't know how many RP's of been in where either the host was a slave driver to seriousness or the players were to scared to make a laugh every once in awhile. So, yes tip #5 could have been better, but it's a lesson needed to be learned all the same...

It's an okay set of tips for basic role playing. Also, for the fifth tip, the thing about role playing is that your playing a role. Yeah, I know that's obvious but it needed to be said. If your character's in a battle with millions of casualties and he's completely insane, then sure he can laugh but if your character's personality is that he's completely sane and normal and stuff then he would be exhibit all types of serious behaviour (being gripped by terror, screaming, etc) So basically, it must depend on your character's personality depending on if he laughs, cries, roars, etc. in your posts.

The fifth tip sucks. The others are excellent.

Redundancy is huzzah. Your choice whether or not to take that at face value.

@OP: You did tip four wrong, and tip five was horrible.

Tip one should note not to go overboard with that kind of thing, and to space the sentences properly. The first sample sentence was a total eyesore, if not actually a technical run-on.

Tip two, on the other hand, doesn't go far enough; the actions described could easily have made up a full post. Odd, that.

Tip three should be used selectively; for even the strictest of "grammar nazis," numbers OVER 9000 are generally fine if written in numeral form, and decimals should never be written out. On the other hand, you shouldn't post just the number "1" unless it's a direct quote from a concrete writing (say, an inscription, trophy, plaque, et cetera).

I think it's great. Some of the new RPers here haven't done any RPing in their life possibly, with very few exceptions.

Also, for those who think this is a crap guide, no saying all, at least FFR did something, yet, you say it's bad. Did you or him give up their time to do it? Him. At least he cares about the RP section that he is willing to give a tip thread for new members.
