vegeta50024
I always see some people saying that staples are essential in any deck. I was wondering if we could get a list of what constitutes as a staple, both for the most common decks and for those less common decks that have a hard time competing. If another thread like this exists, please close this one and direct me to the existing thread.

Akira
Technically, nothing is a staple, because there is always the rogue deck that doesn't want to run the card that every other deck runs. For example, practically all decks run Monster Reborn and Heavy Storm, but you won't see Macro running Reborn (well you might.. but it would be a little silly). CrabHelmet
As long as HOTU-Exodia exists, there are no staples. However, some cards are both splashable enough and good enough to be used in virtually every deck, like Heavy Storm, Monster Reborn, and Solemn Judgment. In another meta, Monster Reborn wouldn't be legal to be a staple. There are no universal staples among all metas, so I was just using the current one. GenzoTheHarpist
I think being used by 95% of decks would be enough to qualify as a staple... Heavy Storm, Reborn, and Brain Control seem like staples.
vegeta50024
So in other words, a lot of the cards that are either staples or splashable tend to get overused, and put on the forbidden list, such as in the past with Monster Reborn. I kind of have a general idea now.

He's talking about what does happen rather than what should happen. And if you look at Konami's banlist-construction "logic", that's pretty much what happens. OK then you can't replace Monarch cards and you can't replace Mirror Force but you can replace all the other cards depending on the deck.

vegeta50024
How is Sakuretsu Armor not a staple? It seems like it would be good to take out even your opponent's strongest monsters.
