This is my first time posting anything and I don't know how to do the "Click to show" thing, if someone could help me with that it would be much appreciated.

Edit: The 'Click to View' has been sorted thank you for your help!

I am quite new to the Yu-Gi-Oh! world being a fan of GX first, then the originials. I hope you find this story enjoyable. If so, please let me know, if not, all critiscism is welcome.

Intro

[spoiler=]“I Synchro Summon Colossal Fighter in attack mode! And with four Warriors resting in my Graveyard he gains an extra 400 attack points, meaning your monster is useless! Colossal Fighter, take him out and win us this duel!”

With a resonating ‘BOOM’ the fist of Colossal Fighter obliterated its opposing monster, blasting into nothing more than a fireball, the shockwave wiping out the player’s remaining Life Points. The crowd roared as one, screaming and cheering the tournament Champion.

Josh! Josh! Josh! Josh!

Josh smiled at his fading monster, his friend, and gave it a ‘thumbs up’, but before he knew it he was pushed onto his back by an unseen force. The crowd continued to call his name,

Josh! Josh! Josh! Josh!

Josh sat up eyes darting around, he was suddenly sitting in a dark room. His room. His mother was shaking him and smiling down at him,

“Josh! Josh! C’mon sleepy head I’ve been calling your name for ages!”

Josh rubbed his eyes and groaned softly. He had been enjoying his dream tremendously! Owning a Colossal Fighter would have to remain a dream though… “OK OK, mum, I’m up.” He replied, jokingly batting her hand away.

“Well just be washed and dressed in fifteen or you’ll miss your breakfast on your big day.” And with that she left. It took Josh a second to remember what she meant, a glance at the calendar reminded him that it was true. A Double celebration today, his 16th birthday and the entry rounds for the latest upcoming Duel Monsters tournament.

Fifteen minutes later he was washed and dressed. His family were not exactly well off, in fact some would say they were downright poor. His father had left before he was born and so his mother, working two jobs, had to keep not only him, but her parents in their small house.

Josh was reminded on a daily basis by the bullies at school that he was poor, and his second hand clothes weren’t to fashion, nor his unkempt mop of dirty blond hair, but there was one thing he knew that lack of money could never take away. His family.

As he entered the small kitchen his grandparents were already sitting down with their tea and toast. His mum was in her uniform and ready to head out of the door, but wanted to wait until he opened his present. They all smiled at him warmly, and Josh smiled back. He was happy.

Sitting down, there was a single box wrapped in bright yellow paper on the table in front of him. He knew that his mother couldn’t afford much as it was, but she, and her parents, always stretched every penny to buy him something to unwrap. Josh looked at the box. It was slightly larger than a Duel Monsters card.

With everyone watching him he slowly started to unwrap it. His grandparent’s held their breath.

“The man in the shop said it was a very powerful card if used correctly…” his mother said, suddenly seeming nervous. Josh hesitated before opening the box. His deck thus far was made up of hand-me-downs, or cards he had found discarded by Duelists that didn’t appreciate them. This would be his first card ever that he alone had owned, and he knew how much his family had given up to be able to buy it.

He shut his eyes as he opened the box. When he opened them the smile on his face spread from ear to ear.

“Is it a good one?” his Gran asked.

“You can use it right?” this from his frail Grandpa.

There sitting in the box, shiny and new, was Joshua Winter’s very first card. The Synchro Monster ‘Colossal Fighter’.

Chapter 01 – To The Tournament!

[spoiler=]Joshua said his goodbyes to his Grandparents after washing the breakfast dishes. School was out for the summer and he had his first Duel Monsters tournament to get to. But this was no ordinary tournament. The winner would not only receive the latest model Duel Disk, but a fully paid scholarship to the top ranking Duel Academy! It was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

As Josh walked along the footpath, towards the Regional Rounds Stadium, he browsed through his deck. He had never really been able to afford to buy cards to get a theme like the other kids he knew. In fact his deck was made up of mostly low level monsters, ones that other kids had throw down in frustration, discarded for more powerful monsters. Or older cards, replaced by newer, with better effects. One or two of his cards he had won though, at school, after an opponent had seen his deck and thought him an easy target.

The thing was, he didn’t care. He loved his monsters like his friends, his family. They too might not have had a lot to offer, but Josh believed in every one of them. And now, he smiled, there was a new addition to his family. Colossal Fighter!

Walking along, not really looking where he was going, Josh bumped into a wall and landed on his ass with a thud. As he looked up he realised it was not a wall, but Dent Mitchell. Two school years ahead didn’t mean he was smarter than the kids he bullied. In fact he had even been held back a year. If it weren’t for his incredibly rich father and the power behind the Mitchell name, Dent would have been booted out of school long ago.

“Hey, punk, watch where the hell you’re going!” Dent loomed over Josh, his black hair matching his eyes. Josh tried to ignore him and got to his knees to pick up his cards. “Hey! I’m talking to you!”

“Sorry alright?!” Josh shot back, regretting it the moment he did. In seconds two of Dent’s mates had him up by his arms. Both were as big as Dent, but with less brain. The fourth of the group was a girl. Josh had remembered seeing her at school. Dent’s girlfriend, bright red hair, cut short, she wore similar attire to the rest. Torn t-shirts, dark jeans, ripped leather jackets. Your common thugs really.

Dent took Josh’s deck and started thumbing through it.

“Hey! Give that back!” shouted Josh, trying to get free from the vice like grip of Dent’s lackeys.

Dent just laughed, holding up a few of the monsters. “This guy’s deck is even weaker than the other kid’s!” Josh managed to see around Dent, a boy, smaller than he, sitting against a wall cradling his cards. Obviously Dent’s target before he turned up. The boy looked terrified, and Josh couldn’t stand that. Dent continued, “I’ve seen pre-schoolers with better cards, what’s the matter can’t handle power?”

“I could take you down any day of the week you jerk!” Dent’s mates laughed, but the girl just looked at him with curiosity.

“I could wipe you out with just two of my monsters!” Cried Dent laughing harder.

“You’re on! But when I beat you, you have to leave both me and him alone,” Josh nodded towards the shaking boy, “and never bother us again.”

“Big words, but if you want to put something on the outcome of the duel, let’s up the stakes…”

Josh just looked at Dent, he knew what was coming, but he couldn’t back down now. “Go on…”

“We both put our best card on the line, which for you means this.” Dent held up Colossal Fighter.

“Deal.” Josh said reluctantly. Colossal fighter was by far his most powerful card, but it was so much more. It symbolised everything his family had. “And what will YOU be offering?”

“This.” Pulling out his deck, Dent revealed a Legendary Blue Eyes White Dragon! Josh’s eyes went wide, his mouth suddenly dry.

“But… I thought there were only –“

“It’s amazing what enough money can buy these days.” Grinned Dent. It was then that Josh realised he might have bitten off more than he could chew. If the Mitchell name could get a Blue Eyes White Dragon, what else would be in his deck?

“Fine, let’s do this.”

“One more thing.” Smiled Dent, handing Josh his cards, “We can’t use the selected cards in the duel!” Josh ground his teeth, he could feel his hand shaking and tried to stop it. Now, not only was his best card on the line, but he couldn’t use it in the duel. The only consolation was that Dent wouldn’t have his Blue Eyes. It was a small consolation, but it would have to do. He trusted his deck, and he knew it wouldn’t let him down.

Pulling out a shiny metal Duel Disk, Dent slipped it onto his arm and activated it by inserting his deck. Josh went bright red. Worse was that it was in front of these bullies. He didn’t own a Duel Disk. He had been planning on using one of the tournament ones when he arrived.

Dent and his two mates roared with laughter, “You don’t even have a Duel Disk?? What, you wanted to play on the floor?” Then, totally out of the blue spoke Dent’s girlfriend.

“Here, you can use mine.” And she tossed her worn black Duel Disk. Josh nodded a thanks, as she fended off angry stares from Dent and his friends. Josh slipped the Duel Disk on, he had only ever worn one once before, and inserted his deck.

The card placement squares lit up in bright blue, and the Life Point counter showed 4000 in bright Green. Standing a distance apart, Josh and Dent faced each other.

“DUEL!”

-Josh:4000 Dent:4000-

“You can start, c’mon, pick which monster I’m gonna destroy first!” called Dent. Josh nodded.

“Draw!” he looked at his had and smiled. Already he had what he needed to get out one of his favourite monsters. A combination of Junk Synchron and Harpie Girl. “I play Harpie Girl in defence mode (500/500) and end my turn.” The image of the Harpie Girl he had only ever viewed as a card appeared in 3D, as if alive, in front of him, and knelt down with her arms folded across her chest. Josh felt a rush of adrenaline and excitement flow through him., but it was short lived.

“A level two monster?? Pah!” yelled Dent. “You need POWER to win a duel, not some little girl with wings! My turn, Draw!” Dent looked at his hand. It was full of powerful dragons, but none the one he wanted. “I play Kaiser Sea Horse in attack mode (1700/1650) and I take out your stupid Harpie!”

A blue-purple monster that looked like something out of a deep-sea monster movie appeared in front of Josh, looming over both he and his defending Harpie. An almighty slash of his weapon and Harpie Girl exploded with a scream.

“Sorry Harpie Girl.” Josh muttered. He never realised how real it would be to lose a monster in battle. Dent continued.

“See! A waste of space!”

“I’ll give you a waste of space!” Josh whispered to himself. When I summon Junk Synchron he’ll bring back Harpie Girl with his special ability then Junk Warrior will take you down.”

“Now I activate the spell ‘Card Destruction’!”

“No!”

“We each send our hands to our Graveyard and draw the same amount of cards from our decks. And with that I end my turn.”

Just like that Josh had lost his game plan. His stomach was stuck in his throat and his heart throbbed in his ears, but he would NOT give up! He would just have to find a different plan.

“I draw. And I play Sonic Chick in defence mode (300/300).” The small pink chick appeared. Josh could have sworn it looked back and winked at him, but thought it was just his anxiety making him see things. “I end my turn.”

“Another weak card! You really think you stand a chance? I draw. I equip the spell ‘Malevolent Nuzzler’ to my Kaiser Sea Horse (2400/1650) and I attack your baby bird!”

Josh braced himself as Dent’s monster came charging in with its boosted attack. An explosion as the monsters clashed filled the area with a cloud of dust. Dent’s laughter could be heard through it before Josh could see him again. When the dust cleared, however, it was Josh who was laughing.

Dent’s mouth dropped. Standing there, using his girlfriend’s Duel Disk, was the runt of a kid with his monster still in play! “H-HOW?!”

“You and your power saved it!” Josh shouted back. “See, Sonic Chick cannot be destroyed in battle by a monster with 1900 or more attack points. You boosted yours to 2400.”

“FINE! You little punk. I end my turn with a face-down.” A card appeared hovering above the ground in front of Dent. Josh still couldn’t get over how cool duelling with a Disk was.

“Draw. I summon Elemental Hero Burstinatrix in attack mode (1200/800) and equip her with this! ‘Lightening Blade’!” (2000/800) A shimmering blade, crackling with lightening, appeared in Burstinatrix’s hands.

“Even with an equip card your monster is still WAY too weak! Give up!”

“Maybe with one card yes, but now I use the spell ‘H-Heated Heart’, which gives my Burstinatrix another 500 attack points!” (2500/800) “Now, Burstinatrix, attack his Kaiser Sea Horse!” Burstinatrix dashed across the playing field and swung hard with her blade only to be stopped mid attack!

“I activate the trap ‘Spell Binding Circle!” Quick as a flash Burstinatrix was flung back towards Josh, bound by a bright green circle, her hands pinned by her sides. She looked angry.

Deflated Josh looked at his hand. “I end my turn.” The ‘H-Heated Heart’ card’s effect wore off. As it shattered and disappeared, Burstinatrix’s attack points dropped back down. (2000/800)

Dent smiled evilly. “Draw. Kaiser Sea Horse, show him how it’s done!” Burstinatrix couldn’t defend herself and with a scream was wiped out by Dent’s monster. The blast causing Josh to cover his face.

-Josh:3600 Dent:4000-

“I told you I wouldn’t need more than two monsters! Now with that crappy Chick still out I’ll end my turn.”

Josh brushed himself off, he had lost two of his monsters in battle already. He felt for his friends, but he couldn’t give in. “I draw. C’mon out Elemental Hero Clayman, in defence mode! (800/2000) And I end my turn.”

“Draw!” And, looking at his card, Dent started laughing again, yet this time more manically. Almost scarily Josh thought. “And now, with my second monster, I shall wipe you out and claim my victory! I’ll use Kaiser Sea Horse’s special ability and use him as two tributes for a Light Monster to call forth, Blue Eyes White Dragon!” The whole street started to shake, behind Dent a growing hole appeared in the ground, then suddenly up burst a massive dragon, screeching in a deafening roar and came to rest behind Dent (3000/2500).

“But…but how? We’re not allowed to have the monsters we’re betting!” Josh stammered. His eyes never leaving the ferocious beast glaring down upon him.

“You think I’d be stupid enough to only have the one Blue Eyes in my deck?” Dent laughed. “You’re pathetic! And to save you from this humiliation I shall end this quickly. After paying 500 Life Points to get my ‘Malevolent Nuzzler’ back on top of my deck,”

-Josh:3600 Dent:3500-

“I play the spell ‘Lightening Vortex! Now by discarding one card I can destroy both your pathetic excuses for monsters.”

“NO!” cried Josh, but before he could mourn his destroyed friends Dent unleashed his attack.

“Now my Blue Eyes, White Lightening Attack!”

Josh could do nothing but stare open mouthed as the huge dragon leapt into the air, its massive wings beating. Opening its mouth it unleashed a force like nothing Josh had ever seen or felt. With nothing to protect him the blast hit him with full force, knocking him off his feet and blowing him backwards. He landed with a thud. The latest in holographic technology certainly added realism!

-Josh:600 Dent:3500-

“I end my turn. Now just give up! There is nothing you have that can beat me and my dragon, and in the next round I shall take out any monster you can summon and then finish you off!”

Josh’s knees were weak, the blast had really taken it out of him and the Blue Eyes was still looming ominously overhead. Before he knew it, doubt was leaking into his mind, and he immediately hated it. He trusted his cards, he did, but there was something else. He wanted to beat this guy, not just to save his card, nor to get Dent’s, just to teach him a lesson! And he was also suddenly aware of Dent’s girlfriend watching him.

He took a deep breath.

“You gonna quit or what?”

“Never.” The only thing out on the field was Dent’s Blue Eyes (3000/2500) he checked his Life Points, 600. Not good. The colour of the numbers was now a deep red. “Draw! I play Royal Knight in defence mode! (1300/800) I set one card and end my turn.”

“I draw. Oh what a surprise, ‘Malevolent Nuzzler’! I equip this spell to my dragon (3700/2500). But do not think you’re safe with your monster in defence mode, punk. I also equip the spell ‘Fairy Meteor Crush! Now the difference between my monster’s attack and your monster’s defence is dealt to you as damage! Blue Eyes, attack! Wipe him out once and for all!”

Josh braced himself once more. The dragon rose up, the bolt of blue lightening building in its mouth. The blast shot towards him at alarming speed, so fast he almost forgo to activate his trap. The Blue Eye’s attack dissolved around him, fizzing and popping.

“What the?” Dent started, but then he saw. Flipped up in front of the boy was a trap. ‘Negate Attack’. “You’re just prolonging the inevitable! Take your turn then, I can wait one more.”

Josh looked at his deck. Just one more draw and this would be over, either for better or worse. “I draw.” Josh looked at the three cards in his hand. If he played it right he might just… “Here goes, I use the spell ‘The Warrior Returning Alive’ to bring back Junk Synchron to my hand and I summon him to the field in attack mode (1300/500). Now I use his special ability of being able to bring back any Level 2 or lower monster from my Graveyard in defence mode, and I bring back Harpie Girl (500/500)”

“Two more pathetic monsters. Are you done?”

“No, and they’re not pathetic, they’re my friends! Now, Junk Synchron, combine with Harpie Girl to Synchro Summon Junk Warrior in attack mode! (2300/1300)”

“What a waste of time. Two weak monsters and all you get is a Level 5 who couldn’t stop my dragon even if un-boosted. My –“

“Wait!” Cut in Josh. “I still have two cards.” Dent’s mouth dropped. Nobody told him what to do! Behind him his girlfriend smiled. Josh continued. “I use the spell card ‘Double Summon’. This lets me normal summon another monster once per turn. So I summon Copy Cat in attack mode (0/0).”

Dent almost wet himself laughing at the gawky clown holding a mirror that appeared next to Josh’s Junk Warrior. You waste my time with a Level 1 monster who has no attack points? Look at my dragon! Or has you’re fear finally made you crack up?”

But Josh wasn’t afraid, he knew exactly what he was doing. “I use my Copy Cat’s special effect. When he is summoned I pick one monster on your side of the field and he gets attack and defence points equal to that monster’s original attack and defence. Seeing as you only have one monster I guess I’ll pick him (3000/2500).”

Dent wasn’t laughing so much anymore. “But even he is still not powerful enough, my Blue Eyes has 3700 attack points. You lose!”

“He may not be strong enough,” Josh said pointing at Copy Cat, “but he is.” Josh nodded at his Junk Warrior whose attack points had changed (5300/1300).

“What?? How? This can’t be!”

“Oh it be.” Grinned Josh. “You forget, my low level Junk Warrior gains attack points equal to the sum of all Level 2 and lower monster’s attack points on my side of the field. And as you so rightly pointed out, Copy Cat is a Level 1.”

“But he’s…”

“Stronger than your Blue Eyes. Correct. Now, Junk Warrior, attack his Blue Eyes with Junk-Fist-Fury!” Joshua couldn’t help but grin as he watched one of his favourite monsters rise up, a David to Dent’s Goliath. Dent however stared in disbelief as the small scrap monster’s fist slammed into his dragon, blasting it in a fireball that knocked him clean off of his feet.

-Josh:600 Dent:1900-

Before Dent could even get to his feet Josh called his next attack, “Now, Copy Cat, finish him off with Mirrored White Lightening!” The force of a 3000 strong Blue Eyes attack was enough to make Dent scream and cower, covering his head in his arms as it struck hard, wiping out his remaining Life Points.

-Josh:600 Dent:0-

With the duel over Josh realised he was breathing heavily. But he felt good. His monsters faded out and he removed his deck from the Disk. Walking over to the kneeling Dent, Josh still felt his knees were weak. He had won but it had been close.

“G-Go on then. Take it.” Dent held out his Blue Eyes White Dragon card. “Just take it and go ok?”

“No.” Josh said plainly. “I’m not interested in your power.” He picked up his Colossal Fighter and turned to go.

“Hey you, Punk! You mean to disgrace me now as well as beating me! Take my card like we agreed at the start of this Duel!”

“Fine!” Josh replied, not knowing where this anger or bravery was coming from. “If you want me to take your card I will, but I don’t want your Blue Eyes. I would rather have this.” And he picked out Dent’s Kaiser Sea Horse.

“You’d rather have a Level 4 monster than a Legendary Blue Eyes White Dragon? You’re more of a fool than I thought!”

“Then this duel has taught you nothing.” Said Josh calmly. Walking past Dent he took of the Duel Disk and handed it back to Dent’s girlfriend. “Thanks for this.”

She looked down at the old beat up black Duel Disk, then into Josh’s eyes. She smiled. “Keep it, it’s yours.”

“I… How… Thanks.”

“No problem kid. But before we go, what’s your name?”

“Winters.” Josh stammerd, “Joshua Winters.”

“Well see ya around Josh.” She called as the gang headed off, Dent punching his mates, letting out his anger on them. Josh continued to watch the girl until they disappeared around a corner then looked down at his new acquisition. Smiling, he slid it back onto his arm. It felt good.

He turned to the boy sitting against the wall, “You ok?”

“I am now, thank you Josh.”

“Are you heading for the Tournament too?”

“I-I was,” the boy nervously stood up, “But I don’t know if I’m good enough.”

“Well there’s only one way to find out.” Josh smiled. “C’mon we’ll go together.”

Chapter 02 – Round 1

[spoiler=]“So, what’s your name?” Joshua asked the boy walking with him to the Duel Monster’s arena.

“Alex. Alex Highman.” He replied almost nervously. “Thanks again for rescuing me back there.”

“Hey no problem, I’m sure you would have done the same for me!” smiled Josh.

“Well, I would have tried,” Alex smiled back weakly, “but I doubt I would have faced up against that Blue Eyes quite so well.”

“You’ve just got to have faith in your cards, Al.”

“Well I never seem to draw the right ones when I need them. I don’t think I’m all that good full stop.”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad, but if you don’t mind me saying, if you’re not really that into Duel Monsters, why go for this tournament?”

“Oh I do love Duel Monsters!” Alex cut in suddenly, “But I much prefer the art on them than the duelling itself. Here, look at this.” He dug into his rucksack and pulled out a thick leather bound book. He handed it to Josh as they walked.

Josh flicked through the pages, some were covered in random sketches of body parts, eyes, mouths, some had brilliant copies of existing cards , in full colour, there were even a few that Josh had never seen. He assumed they were Alex’s own creation.

“Wow, Al, these are REALLY good! You should submit them for new cards.”

“Really? You think so? I just do it for fun really. My dad, he was the top ranked duellist in his region five years running. He thinks I should be too, and that drawing pictures is a waste of time.”

“So that’s why you’re going on for this tournament? Because of your dad?” Asked Josh, handing back Alex’s sketch book.

“Yeah.” Replied Alex looking down.

“Well don’t you worry, Al, cos I’ll be with you every step of the way!”

“R-really?” Alex’s round face brightened up.

“Sure, pal. Unless you’re my competition, then I’ll give it everything I’ve got. And I hope you will too!”

Josh and Alex entered the Duel Arena, Josh a tall skinny blond haired boy and Alex, shorter, stockier with deep brown hair. When they got to the front desk Josh could hear the duels that were already happening. Looking over the lady at the counter’s shoulder he could see a Blue Eyes White Dragon. Dent was here.

“May I help you two?” The old lady asked at the counter.

“We’re here to duel.” Josh answered, almost too excitedly. His heart was racing, his first ever tournament!

“Well I’m afraid all the first matches have been picked, so you two will have to duel each other.” Alex looked worriedly at Josh. He had just seen his new friend duel, he knew he was good.

Josh saw the look on Alex’s face, “Don’t worry, Al. Just give it everything you have, no one can ask more than that.”

“O-Ok.” stammered Alex, smiling weakly. “Let’s go.” As they walked to their field Alex asked the question that had been on his mind since Josh had defeated Dent. “How come you didn’t take the Blue Eyes?”

“Simple. He might have been all powerful, but Kaiser Sea Horse has a sweet ability that I just couldn’t pass up.”

“Oh, so you have a high level Light monster waiting in your deck huh?”

Josh turned a bright shade of red, “Well… no, not yet, but I might one day!” grinned Josh. “So are you ready, pal?”

“I guess.” Alex walked to the other end of the field and activated his Duel Disk by sliding in his deck. Josh turned to face his new friend and placed his own deck into his black Duel Disk. The card pads lit up in bright blue, his life point counter showing 4000 in a bright green.

“DUEL!”

-Alex: 4000 Josh: 4000-

Alex started, “Draw!” Josh saw him looking at his hand, he was clearly thinking about his move carefully. “I play Dancing Fairy in defence mode (1700/1000) and I set one card.” A fairy, crouching down appeared in front of Alex, just in front of a hovering face down. “I end my turn.”

“Good start, Al.” smiled Josh, “but now it’s my turn! Draw! I summon Elemental Hero Burstinatrix in attack mode (1200/800) and I strike at your Dancing Fairy.” Burstinatrix leapt up into the air, bright red fireballs appearing in her hands. Josh could almost feel the heat.

“I activate a trap!” yelled Alex, “Driaining Sheild.” Burstinatrix’s attack was deflected by a green shield that formed around Alex’s monster. “And now its effect. Not only does it negate your attack, but I gain Life Points equal to your monster’s attack points.”

-Alex: 5200 Josh: 4000-

“Sweet move, Al.!”

“You think? Thanks.” Blushed Alex.

“I’ll throw this card face down and end my turn.” Josh noticed that Alex seemed to have relaxed a little. He didn’t expect to have to fight a friend in this tournament, and as much as he would want a friend to win, he was not going to be beaten.

“My turn.” Said Alex, drawing his card. “And thanks to Dancing Fairy’s effect, I gain 1000 Life Points for each of my Stand-by Phases that he’s in defence mode.”

-Alex: 6200 Josh: 4000-

“Now I summon Freya-Spirit of Victory in defence mode (100/100), and due to her effect all fairy monsters gain 400 attack and defence (500/500) and as long as I have another fairy out on the field she can’t be set as an attack target.” Josh could see Alex was getting into it and had to smile, he knew the thrill of duelling with Disks, seeing your monsters really appear as if real.

“I change Dancing Fairy into attack mode (2100/1400) and attack your Burstinatrix.” Josh braced himself as Alex’s fairy flew up on high just to come crashing down on his monster. Burstinatrix covered her face with her arms as the force of the attack caused her to blow in a red fireball. “I end.”

-Alex: 6200 Josh: 3100-

“Draw.” Josh looked at his hand and smiled. “I summon Harpie Girl in defence mode (500/500) and end my turn.

Alex knew what was coming, he had seen Josh do this before. Josh was going to let him destroy Harpie Girl, then bring her back after summoning Junk Synchron to bring out Junk Warrior. But he didn’t have anything that could beat him. His dad had always told him, however, to destroy any monster if you get the chance.

“I draw, and I send Hecatrice to my graveyard from my hand to add the field spell ‘Valhalla Hall of the Fallen’ from my Deck to my hand. Now I activate it!” Josh watched as Alex slid the new card into a pop-out slot at the end of his Duel Disk. Suddenly the whole field rumbled. Massive stone columns shot from the ground, soaring high. Thick walls rose up too and then the two duellists were covered by the halls great roof.

“Wow!” was all Josh could say. He had never experienced a Field Spell before, the realism to it was outstanding! He almost forgot he was in a duel, until he heard Alex call out his attack. Before he knew it, Alex’s fairy slashed right through his Harpie Girl. Seeing her beaten never got any easier.

“I end my turn.”

Still looking at the hall that surrounded them, Josh drew his card. “As I have no monsters on the field I can special summon Evil Hero Infernal Prodigy in attack mode (300/600), and now I summon my friend, Junk Synchron! (1300/500). But he won’t be around for long. I use his special ability to bring back my Harpie Girl, then I Synchro Summon Junk Warrior! (2300/800)”

Both Junk Synchron and Harpie Girl flew straight up into the air, before being surrounded by a bright white light. What landed was one of Josh’s favourite monsters, Junk Warrior.

“And now, due to his special effect, he gains attack points equal to the sum of all level 2 and lower monsters’ attack on my field, and thanks to Infernal Prodigy that’s 300 (2600/800). Now Junk Warrior, take out his Dancing Fairy.”

One almighty fist blow later and Alex’s fairy was destroyed along with a chunk of his boosted Life Points.

“That’s me done.”

-Alex: 5700 Josh:3100-

Alex was still shaking from the blast. He didn’t know how he was going to pull any of this back. He was losing faith already and Josh saw it in his face. “C’mon, Al, it’s not over yet, we’ve only just got started. I know you can pull something out of the bag.”

“Alright, here goes, draw. I summon Shining Angel in attack mode (1400/800) and thanks to Freya-Spirit of Victory he gets a boost, (1800/1200), and now to top it off I equip him with the spell ‘Angel Wing’. Now, whenever he inflicts damage to your Life Points you take a further 300 damage.”

Josh’s mouth dropped, he hated to admit it, but after hearing Alex talk about his duelling he imagined that this match would be quite easy. Now he realised he had to step up his game! He instantly regretted leaving Infernal Prodigy in attack mode.

“Now, Shining Angel, attack his Infernal Prodigy.”

Josh was almost thrown off his feet by the blast, his life points dropped drastically. They were now glowing orange on his Duel Disk. 1600, then as he watched the effect of ‘Angel Wing’ took hold. Alex watched Josh as his whole body glowed white, and Josh actually called out in pain. He remembered that Josh wasn’t used to duelling with a Disk and that the loss of Life Points could feel very real.

“Sorry, Josh!” he called. “I end my turn.”

-Alex: 5700 Josh: 1300-

Josh stood up and brushed himself down. His body still stung. He LOVED it! “Hey! No worries, Al, I’ve not enjoyed a duel this much in ages!” he grinned. “but now it’s my turn and I promised not to hold back! Draw! I summon Royal Knight in attack mode (1300/800). Now, Junk Warrior, take out that Shining Angel, Junk-Fist Fury.” Alex’s eyes widened as Josh’s monster dashed across the field and pummelled his Angel into the ground.

-Alex: 5200 Josh: 1300-

As the dust cleared he called out,

“Now I can activate his effect! I can special summon one Fairy-Type monster as long as they have 1500 or less attack points, and I summon Dancing Elf (300/200) in attack mode.” Her attack and defence points were immediately raised due to Freya-Spirit of Victory’s effect (700/600), “And also, because my ‘Angel Wing’ has been destroyed I can draw one card from my Deck.”

“Those are some cool effects, Al, but my Royal Knight has one too, I gain life points equal to the defence points of any monster he destroys, and now he’s going to take out your Dancing Elf!” Josh’s Knight swung a bright glowing sword and quickly dispatched Alex’s Elf in a firey explosion.

-Alex: 4600 Josh: 1500-

“I’ll set one card and end my turn.”

Alex drew his card. Again a look of deep thought spread across his face. Josh wanted nothing more than to be able to help and guide his new friend, but in this match he was the competition. “I play Fairy Guardian in attack (1000/1000) (1400/1400) and I attack your Royal Knight.”

Josh was prepared for this and flipped his face down, ‘Negate Attack’. He saw Alex’s shoulders droop when his Fairy Guardian’s attack was deflected away.

“I end my turn.” Alex said with a sigh.

“I draw, I use the spell ‘Cup of Ace’. Now I flip a coin, if it’s heads I draw two cards, if it’s tails you do.” A massive coin appeared hovering above the playing field, spinning madly before flying up into the air and falling back down with a thud. Heads. Josh drew two more cards. Junk Warrior, attack his Fairy Guardian!” Again, Alex had to brace himself as one of Josh’s favourite monsters took out his own in a blast that shook him to the bone.

-Alex: 3700 Josh: 1500-

But before Alex had a chance to breathe Josh had sent his Knight to take out his one remaining monster. Alex covered his face as Freya-Spirit of Victory screamed before shattering into a million pieces.

-Alex 3700 Josh: 1600-

“You’re turn, Al”

“Draw,” Alex said dejectedly, but when he looked at the card he pulled Josh saw his eyes flick around the field, then a big grin spread across his face. “I use my ‘Valhalla’ field spell’s effect to special summon Guardian Angel Joan in attack mode (2800/2000). I and I use her to attack your Royal Knight.”

Josh’s heart started thumping, this was going to be painful. A blinding white light preceded a throbbing noise that filled the holographic hall. Josh’s Royal Knight was obliterated and the wave of destruction continued onto himself. As he felt the burning take over him he heard his Duel Disk bleeping as his Life Points dropped fast.

-Alex: 5000 Josh: 100-

Josh was panting, his Life Point counter glowing deep red. “Guardian Angel Joan’s ability gives you life points equal to the destroyed monsters attack points yeah?”

“Y-yes… Sorry.” Alex genuinely looked sorry for almost beating his friend.

“Alex, we both have a chance to win this and I don’t want you to let up. I’m not!” he grinned. “I draw, I equip my Junk Warrior with ‘H-Heated Heart’” (2800/800) “Go for it, Junk Warrior, attack his Angel Joan.”

“B-But they have the same attack points, they’ll just destroy each other.”

“That’s the plan.” Junk Warrior and Guardian Angel Joan both unleashed their attacks at the same time. They clashed in mid air, neither giving in to the other, a high pitched whine filled the air getting louder and louder until both monsters exploded violently. Alex and Josh took a second to regain their composure. The field was now empty except for each player’s single face-down.

“Phew, that was a bit much hey?” Grinned Josh. “I summon Elemental Hero Clayman in defence mode, set one card face down and end my turn.” (800/2000)

Alex pushed back the hair that had fallen into his eyes. “I draw, and I special summon Athena!” (2600/800) “Now I flip the spell card ‘Stop Defence’ and-“

“Wait! Sorry Alex, but you’ve just activated my trap, ‘Magic Jammer’. By discarding one card I can negate the activation of your spell and destroy it.” Josh breathed a sigh of relief as he put a card into his Graveyard.

Alex scratched his head, “OK, I shall equip my Athena with ‘Malevolent Nuzzler’,” (3300/800) and I’ll take out your Clayman now.”

Josh’s Clayman groaned under Athena’s attack before succumbing to the strain and exploding right in front of him.

Being the last two to join the tournament most of the other battles had been won and lost and now a small crowd was forming around the two new friends.

“My turn.” Josh’s had just one card in his hand and one face-down and was faced with a monster that had 3300 attack. With only 100 Life Points remaining even he had to admit that things looked grim. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Draw!” When he opened his eyes he couldn’t help but smile. His deck had given him a fighting chance, he just hoped his luck held. “I activate the spell ‘Pot of Greed’, which allows me to draw two more cards from my deck.”

Pulling out the two cards that would decide this duel for him Josh’s smile turned into a fully grown grin. “Sorry, Al. First I activate ‘O-Oversoul’ to bring back Elemental Hero Clayman in attack mode (800/2000). And now I activate my second card, ‘The Warrior Returning Alive’ to let me bring back Junk Synchron to my hand, who I also summon in attack mode (1300/500). Using his special ability I special summon Harpie Girl in defence mode (500/500).” Josh had gone from having no monsters on his side of the field to bringing out three of his friends in one turn.

“I’m not done yet though.” He flipped his final face-down, ‘Miniaturize’. He saw the look of confusion on Alex’s face.

“Why didn’t you activate that before, not only does it reduce the targeted monster by one level, but it reduces their attack points by 1000. Using it now won’t weaken my Athena enough for you.”

“I’m not going to use it on Athena. I’m targeting my Junk Synchron.” (300/500) Before Alex could ask the question on everyone’s mind Josh continued, “Now the total sum of stars on my side of the field is eight.” He didn’t know if it was nerves or excitement, but his hands were shaking slightly at what was about to come.

“And now, please welcome my newest friend, Colossal Fighter!” The whole holographic hall they were standing in started to shake and rumble. The three monsters on Josh’s side of the field took flight and glowed bright white. They merged together and came crashing down in front of Josh with an almighty roar as Josh’s most prized monster, Colossal Fighter (2800/1000). Josh almost forgot he was in a duel, he was just so happy to have brought out his best monster, the one his family had struggled to get him.

“I’m sorry, Josh.” Alex said looking really down. He knew what Colossal Fighter meant to his new friend, “But he’s not strong enough either.”

“Oh he’s plenty strong enough. He gets 100 attack points for every warrior resting in the Graveyard and I have six of my friends waiting back there.” (3400/1000) “Colossal Fighter, do your stuff!” The giant that was Josh’s new monster ran across the field straight for Athena, his fist raised. In one resonating blow from his mighty fist Athena crumbled and exploded.

-Alex: 4900 Josh: 100-

Alex’s mouth dropped open. He had not expected Josh to have been able to come back from his losing position. His faith in his cards had long left him now, he thought he had already given all he could and now there was nothing left to give. But then he thought again about what Josh had just managed to pull. From having next to nothing he had summoned his strongest monster and defeated his.

Alex gritted his teeth, he was not going to give up. “I draw. I set Dancing Elf in defence mode and end my turn.” (300/200)

“Don’t give up now, Alex, we still both have cards left, this could still go either way ok?” Josh smiled. He drew his card. “Colossal Fighter, take out his Dancing Elf.” Colossal fighter’s attack looked like overkill on the small defending monster, but Alex stood his ground. “I set one card and call it a turn.”

“My turn, YES!” cried Alex.

“You got a good card there, pal?”

“You bet!” grinned Alex, “I use my own ‘Cup of Ace’. Another massive coin appeared hovering above the playing field, spinning madly before flying up into the air and falling back down with a thud. The whole crowd held their breath… Heads! Alex drew another two cards. He was back in the game.

“I use ‘Valhalla’s’ effect and special summon another Athena and equip her with not one, but two ‘Elf’s Light’ spell cards, which raise her attack points by 400 each. Now her total is,”

“3400!” the crowd shouted. Amazed at the duelling going on in front of them!

“Exactly, I’m going to use your own strategy, but before I take out your Colossal Fighter I summon Fairy Guardian in attack mode to finish you off (1000/1000). Go Athena!”

“Wait!” Josh shouted, “I use my face down, ‘Monster Reincarnation’. By discarding one card from my hand I can bring a monster back to my hand from my Graveyard.”

“But how will that help you now? You can’t summon another monster until your turn.” A confused Alex asked as Athena and Colossal Fighter clashed in mid air.

Josh had to shout over the growing whine of the two monsters clashing, “It’s not the monster that I brought to my hand that’s important, it’s the one that I discarded. By discarding Elemental Hero Avain I’ve put another warrior into my Graveyard which-“

“Increases Colossal Fighter’s attack by 100.” Alex said sadly. The deafening whine ended abruptly as an explosion ripped throughout the hall. When the dust and smoke cleared the only thing left standing was Josh’s Colossal Fighter (3500/1000)

“I end my turn.”

-Alex: 4800 Josh: 100-

“It’s been a good battle, Al. I draw and I summon Speed Warrior in Attack mode (900/400), and on the turn that he is normal summoned his attack points are doubled (1800/400). Go on Speed Warrior, take out his remaining monster.” Speed Warrior skated across the field and ploughed through Alex’s Fairy Guardian.

Alex: 4000 Josh: 100

Alex was already covering himself for what was to come. He didn’t have to hear Josh’s next command and he didn’t want to see the huge monster that was Colossal Fighter come smashing down on top of him wiping out a massive chunk of his life points. He heard the beeping of his Life Point counter stop before he looked at it.

Alex: 500 Josh: 100

Alex looked at his deck. He knew that he couldn’t pull a second turn around, but withdrawing was not in him. “I draw.” He sighed, it was an equip spell. “I end my turn.”

“Alex, this was by far one of the hardest duels I have ever played. Your father would be proud I’m sure.”

“Really? You think so?” Alex asked brightening up.

“I know so, pal. You’ve fought every step of the way and at the end of the day we have both done our best and played our hearts out.”

“You deserve this win, Josh. And I want you to know that I will be with you every step of the way. If you’d like.”

“Al, you’re probably the first person I could properly call my friend, I would be honoured to have you by my side. But let’s finish this first. Colossal Fighter, my friend, do what you do best. Attack!”

Alex stood tall and proud as Colossal Fighter bore down on him, his fist ramming into him with full force.

Alex: 0 Josh: 100

The crowd cheered as the holographic hall and Joshua’s monsters faded away. Joshua walked over to his friend and held out his hand. “Great duel, Al.”

“You too, Josh.” Alex smiled back.

no problem, I think this is the of best fan-fic I've read from someone that that was they're first post (or even a two-star), great job

(but it gets people intrested if they can make characters, my friend says he did it once and people were checking back everyday for the next chapter) :)

it was pretty cool, i'll admit, but be aware of Junk Warriors power, because it wuda been a better idea (just for canonicity and proper effect) that Josh summoned Copycat BEFORE Junk Warrior because Junk Warrior's effect only works when he's Synchro summoned, but still pretty cool.

I am gonna keep reading in the future.

Maybe you could check mine out :) I only have a prologue at the moment.......

Thank you for the great feedback. And thanks for the advice on Junk Warrior's effect, I must admit that was the one bit i was a bit unsure of. I'll keep it in mind for the future though.

I look forward to checking yours out.

Wow thank you! I have read some of the other stories on here and although good some of them lacked a bit of character development. So i wanted to get people into the Duelists as well as the duels.

I hope the second chapter, for which i have just finished planning the duel, is equally as enjoyable!

I think maybe after reading this, you'll soon realise that im a complete bastard for noticing errors and i'll agree with you on that.....but i did notice some errors in this duel.

I noticed you played Valhalla, Hall of the Fallen as field spel, even though it is actually a continuous spell. However I personally prefer it as a field spell. Makes more sense if you know what i mean, so a good and bad point there.

Second, Junk Warrior (him again haha) KEEPS the attack points he gains from a level 2 or weaker monster. So effectively Junk Warrior beat Guardian Angel Joan (it was wasn't it?) without suiciding.

Bit of terminology (I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to terminology so bear with me). You said that Alex sets Fairy Guardian? in defence mode. If he set it, it would be face-down, not face-up.

Lastly.......I'm aware you watched the anime (GX, then Yugi and Joey etc) so you know that they play spell cards as quick-plays. I'm not sure if that's the route you're taking, but cool if you are. I picked that out because Monster Reincarnation isn't a quick-play.

Some really critical things there so sorry, but you might need to know for the future chapters :). If you want anyone to proof read it before you post, i'll be happy to. go on my page and get my msn address and email it to me. I'll email it back with what you can change.

But overall im cool with all that went on. Like for example playing Monster Reincarnation to dispose of Avian to increase Colossal Fighter. Any way........did you find mine? and what did you think? just so you know there aren't any duels for quite some time :L but it's still pretty good in my opinion :)

I decree this fanfic to be... FAIL.

The Decks in this are, as I feared at first, utterly worthless. The combos played are barely combos at all, and every card used is pathetic. Even my Spellcaster build, which I know full well is crap, could beat these Decks, easily. It's like this was written when LOB was released... but using a few decent cards, like the self-resurrecting beatstick that is Colossal Fighter.

Even worse, though, is the lack of originality. You seem to be stealing from the other three animes (hero uses E-Heroes, villain uses BEWD, hero uses Junk Warrior, there's a card artist...) to cobble together your own, far less powerful characters. The results are ultra-linear, incredibly boring characters that do nothing to keep the reader's attention. Add this to a generic, bland plot, and you have an awful story.

Your first stop should be your local library; writing YGO before writing realistic fiction is learning to walk before you can crawl. Then hit metagame.com, or the YCM TCG section (but don't post in the latter if you don't want to get flamed to death), to learn more about how to play the game as it is now. Lastly, ensure that everything you're doing has a consistent, recorded set of rulings, preferably those already set down by Konami.

  • 2 weeks later...

I didn;t notice this but my friend did, who told me, so i thought i'd point it out.

When Alex summoned Fairy Guardian whilst Athena was face-up on the field, Josh SHOULD have lost, because Athena deals 600 points of damage to the opponent when you summon a Fairy-type monster and seeing that Josh was on 100, well yeah.

Sounds harsh that, sorry, but it was my friend who noticed it, the first time he read it.

Chapter 3&4 of Machine Wars up btw :)
