Light suffers from a God complex and doesn't care who dies. In the end, his plan fails miserably.

Lelouch fights for a noble cause, to liberate Japan. He cares if certain people die. He may have died, but it was his own plan to do so, and his plan worked perfectly.

Light may have the Death Note, but Lelouch has Geass and the alias of Zero.

Light: Why don't you take off that mask?

Lelouch: Alright... *Removes visor, revealing only his eyes* Now, Lelouch vi Britannia commands you to die.

Light: Yes, my lord! *Writes his own name in the Death Note and dies*

Lelouch's plan relies on his name and face being universally known and feared throughout the entire world. That makes him rather vulnerable to a certain notebook, doesn't it?

That being said, Lelouch makes fewer amateurish mistakes, whereas Light made some ridiculous blunders - like killing Lind L. Taylor. Gee, it's the world's greatest detective who has never shown his face or revealed his name before, and now he's broadcasting his name and face to the entire world to announce that he hasn't actually found anything out but is going to try? Don't you think this just might be a not-all-that-subtle trap?

Of course, Light also had a stronger opponent in L. Lelouch's opponent was some moron in a big white mech. >_>

Lelouch has a mind that allows him to think about the consequences and with Zero and his mask Light cannot do anything about that. For the deathnote to work you need to write out the name and have the person's face in mind and they die. So Leouch would wear his mask pop open his viser and order Light to commit suicide.

Good point about Lelouch's plan.

However' date=' Lelouch had Schneizel as an opponent also, or would he be more of an equivalent to Near?

Schneizel spent the entire series standing in the background and making epic chess moves until he suddenly decided to start being a villain seven episodes before the end of R2 and decided to derail Lelouch's entire two-season scheme in the space of four minutes. After that, he just sort of tossed nukes around until he died.

He wasn't a consistent enough opponent for Lelouch. He's more of a final boss Big Bad than a lawl-I'm-right-on-top-of-you-every-step-of-the-way villain.

Sorry Light, you're a genius but Lulouch is epic genius! He has not once ever failed in his plans.

Yes, he has. Several times.

He's just good at recovering afterwards.
