[spoiler=Chapter Fifteen]

Just in the Nick of Time; Battle Jeremy as One

John

“I’m taking you down!” growled WingedDragonterramon. He rushed MegaMechamon and flapped his wings once, rising up over the foe’s head. On his way over he dropped a mouthful of flames down on the foe. MegaMechamon raised his left arm to deflect the flames and raised his right blaster, which doubled as a hand, and grabbed WingedDragonterramon’s tail. With one swift tug he pulled WingedDragonterramon back and slammed him into the ground.

MegaMechamon aimed his blasters at WingedDragonterramon’s head and prepared to fire at point blank range. He was interrupted by JousterStaliamon leaping at MegaMechamon’s head. MegaMechamon spun his torso at the waste and knocked JousterStaliamon away. JousterStaliamon flipped in midair, landing firmly on his feet. When MegaMechamon turned back to WingedDragonterramon he found his foe risen and ready for more.

WingedDragonterramon took a step and raised glowing claws, preparing to slash, when MegaMechamon called, “Missile Assault!” Several panels on the machine’s body opened up revealing missile launchers. They fired, unleashing a wave of small missiles. WingedDragonterramon jumped up and flew backward in an attempt to dodge, but he was too close. The missiles hit and WingedDragonterramon was thrown to the ground.

“Lightning Joust!” called JousterStaliamon from behind the enemy. He summoned electricity to his lance, but before he could complete his attack MegaMechamon rotated his torso around to face him and fired his blasters, hitting JousterStaliamon with one of the two electrically charged beams. He collapsed. WingedDragonterramon tried to use the opportunity to attack, but MegaMechamon rolled toward him and hit him with a fierce uppercut. The mighty dragon was thrown onto his back, his wings crumpled beneath him.

“Full Weapon Assault!” called MegaMechamon. He fired a beam and several missiles at both of him opponents. The attack hit, leaving my two Digimon unable to move.

“Alright MegaMechamon,” said Jeremy, “kill them!”

“You can’t,” said Ponymon, “I won’t let you.” She stumbled, trembling, between her allies and the much larger Digimon.

“Fine,” said Jeremy, “you’re first. MegaMechamon, destroy her.”

MegaMechamon raised one of his blasters and took aim at the small horse. One shot would be enough to kill her. MegaMechamon locked on, and fired.

It was just them that a massive form swooped in and planted itself between MegaMechamon and Ponymon. MegaMechamon’s blast hit one of the massive jets on the form’s back. From the form’s back jumped Jen and Amanda. Amanda turned to the new arrival and said, “Get him MetalBrauntomon!”

Jen stopped and turned to face the battling Digimon, Coltmon at her side. Coltmon grew becoming the mighty BattleStaliamon. Jen plugged a disk into her Digiplayer and called, “Initiate Digiplayer Digivolution!”

“BattleStaliamon,” her partner called, “Digivolve to, MetalStaliamon!” The newly Digivolved armored horse fired up his boosters, launching into the air.

“MetalBrauntomon and MetalStaliamon, huh?” I said. “WingedDragonterramon, JousterStaliamon, we’re gonna need you guys soon”

“Huh,” said Jen, “so it’s JousterStaliamon now.”

Ponymon ran back to Sarah’s side, and three more Digimon dropped from the sky; Dokugamon and Birdramon, plus a massive horned beast Digimon. They moved along with MetalBrauntomon and MetalStaliamon to surround MegaMechamon. He turned to try and find a route of escape, and he was cut off by JousterStaliamon and WingedDragonterramon. They were battered, but they still had some fight in them.

“Well,” said Jeremy, “this could get interesting.”

Sarah

“Take him down,” John said, “but don’t hurt him too bad. He’s still our friend deep down.”

“Sorry,” said Jeremy, “but you guys need to face facts. We aren’t your friends anymore. Our only ‘friend’ is Lord Manipulamon.”

“Come on,” said John, “don’t you get that he’s just controlling you?”

“Nobody controls me,” said Jeremy forcefully. MegaMechamon took that as his cue to attack. The Digimon fought back, but they were too concerned with not dealing any mortal damage their foe to fight with their full strength. Claws slashed, metal crunched, and Digimon cried out in pain. If this kept up I had no doubt that someone would die. We needed another option, but what? What could I do? I closed my eyes and reached deep within myself, and suddenly the sounds of battle were gone. I was a peace. And I realized that I’d had enough.

The two sides clashed and then separated, facing of, and then rushing each other. I opened my eyes and yelled at the top of my lungs, “Stop!!!” My voice boomed, echoing too loudly between the trees. Everyone, Human and Digimon alike stopped and turned to see who had made such a sound, and everyone was surprised to see that it was me.

I stepped forward, the Neo Crest of Light around my neck glowing. Ponymon walked at me side, her wounds healing, and became Fillimon.

“Jeremy,” I said, “this is it. Either fight Manipulamon’s control, or die. I’ll help, but I can’t fight your battle for you. You have to do this yourself.”

My crest slid from its tag and became a disk that floated in the air ahead of me. I plugged it into my Digiplayer and called, “Initiate Digiplayer Digivolution!” As I spoke Fillimon began to change.

“Fillimon, Digivolve to!” A black apparatus shaped like a half pyramid appeared on her back. From each side of it extended a backswept flattened triangle ending in a rocked booster. Exoskeletons appeared around her legs, greatly enhancing her strength and speed, and a red helm and mask shaped like a dragon head appeared over her face and head, “TechnoFillimon!”

The newly Digivolved Digimon spread her wings and called, “Cleansing Light!” Her fur began to glow and her technological components became charged with static energy. A beam that was half light and half static burst forth toward Jeremy. MegaMechamon opened his boosters and fired them up, throwing himself into the path of the beam. An M-Tag fell from between the panels in his chest and broke apart, and he de-Digivolved to Mechmon.

“No!” Jeremy cried in frustration.

“Yes,” I said, and TechnoFillimon fired again, her beam engulfing Jeremy. An M-Tag fell from under his left sleeve and broke apart. Jeremy collapsed, unconscious. Our Digimon de-Digivolved and we ran to our friend’s side.

John

We laid out one of our bed mats, an extra that we had been given by the Gekomon before leaving, and placed our fallen friend on it, giving him a chance to rest. Turns out that the reason he was able to so easily stay ahead of us was because Manipulamon had commanded him not to sleep and to keep moving. He had been going for days without rest. While he slept my team, our allies and I sat with Mechmon and listened to his story.

“When Jeremy arrived here I was already waiting for him. We traveled for awhile before we came to a collapsed shrine in the forest where we fought our first battle against a group of Insectoids. It was then that I Digivolved into Mechamon. After the battle Jeremy came across a message in his Digicalculator that led us in the direction of the Amphibian Village, where we learned about our mission. But-.”

“But,” said Jeremy, sitting up behind his Digimon and looking groggily at us, “we were led off course on our way to the bridge by a couple of Manipulamon’s Digimon, and we found ourselves in an old ruin, probably of a city. Manipulamon was waiting for us there. He knew that there were other Digidestined somewhere, and he had heard stories of a village that no evil Digimon could find. He formed a plan that, if all went well, would allow him to destroy the Digidestined and the village all at once. So he tagged us to use in his plan. I’m sorry.”

“It wasn’t your fault, man,” I said. “All that matters is that you’re free to fight for the right side now. Not even an army can stop us at this point. Manipulamon’s time is up!”

“An army,” said Jeremy. He looked like he was straining to remember something. Then his face lit up, “Oh crap! An army. An army is about to attack Machine Citadel!”

“What?” Jen asked.

“Machine Citadel,” Jeremy replied, “home of the most advanced and powerful organized group native to the Digital World, and the only real threat to Manipulamon’s power besides you, uh, I mean us. He’s brought together a massive force of Willings to attack and capture the Citadel. We can’t let then get killed. They’re good Digimon and potential allies.”

“Jeremy’s right,” I said. “Whatever we do we can’t let Manipulamon destroy this Citadel. It’s time to go on the offensive!”

[spoiler=Chapter Sixteen]

Machine Citadel; The Digidestined on the attack

Thanks to Jeremy’s guidance we were able to reach the Machine Citadel by mid morning (as a side note I noticed that Amanda walked with us now instead of sleeping on Chickomon’s back). There were, as of yet, no signs of an attack, but as we approached the fortress that was the Citadel I couldn’t see why anyone in their right mind would attack it.

The massive circular wall that surrounded the structure was at least one hundred yards high, making the towers inside the walls at least two hundred yard tall. There were at least a hundred visible towers alone, and the scanners in the Digicomp, which could barely penetrate the walls, read several unseen towers as well. It was an enclosed city. I tried to read how many Digimon were inside, but I couldn’t. But based on the size there had to be several hundred if not a thousand. Unless they were all huge or something.

I scanned the walls next. If I couldn’t see inside the walls I could at least take a look at what the walls were made of and try to figure out what the best way would be to boost the Citadel’s defense capabilities. The walls all the way around registered as a thick layer of something called Chrome Digizoid, a nearly impenetrable metal, bolted in place over a massive titanium frame filled with a mixture of steel and concrete. I could also detect elevating platforms spread equidistantly along the inner walls, leading to barricaded platforms along top edge of the wall from which machine Digimon could fire their attacks in defense of the Citadel. It took us nearly an hour to circle the wall to the gate, and we weren’t even halfway around the perimeter! It really was little more than a giant fortress. We approached the gate; a tall set of double doors that were nearly as thick as the wall itself.

The gate was guarded by two Machine Digimon. They were nine feet tall, bulky and brown, and made of a metal that was most likely steel. On the front of each of their square bodies was a hatch, and their heads were squashed down between their shoulders. I scanned them with the Digicomp as we approached. They were the Guardian Digimon, Guardromon, Adult Level.

I stepped up to the Guardromon and raised my hands up over my head, signally compliance. “We come in peace,” I said.

The two guards looked right into my eyes and said at once, “State your name and intensions.”

“I’m John,” I said, “Leader of the Digidestined. These,” I said, gesturing to my companions, “are my allies. We require an immediate audience with whoever’s in charge here. He have reason to believe that your Citadel will soon come under attack.”

The two Digimon seemed to scrutinize us for a few seconds, and then they said, “Our scanners read biological readings taking during your statements are identical to the norm for your species. You speak the truth. You may enter. Once inside please follow Hagurumon to High Tower.”

The massive gates slid into the wall, opening a path for us, and we stepped inside. The gates closed behind us. We looked around in awe. We had entered a world the likes of which we, Human and Digimon alike, had never seen before. We found ourselves amongst dozens of spear-shaped towers that reached toward the sky. They grew taller the closer to the center of the city that they were. There were hundreds of open walkways that spanned the distance between the towers, connecting them, making the individual towers more like a single unit than many units. There were mechanical Digimon of varying shapes and sizes walking from one tower to another, whether across the ground or the walkways. The streets and the walkways were riddles with a constant stream of purposeful motion. On the ground at every corner and entrance were Guardromon guards prepared to serve and protect and offer assistance to passers by. My friends and I stood fixated on the sight before us until our concentration was broken by a voice by my feet.

“Excuse me, Digidestined? “ We looked down to find the source of the voice and we found that it was coming from a living gear about two and a half feet wide, floating in the air, with a mechanical face and two smaller gears for hands. “I’m Hagurumon, your guide to High Tower. Now,” said Hagurumon, turning away from the gate, “please follow me.”

We walked for twenty minutes following the Hagurumon through the Citadel interior. It wasn’t hard to tell which of the towers was High Tower. It was in the center of the Citadel, connected to the gate by a wide strait street. It was also the largest and tallest tower. It was like a skyscraper, though not quite as tall. Next to High tower was a smaller tower resembling a radio tower that was connected to High Tower by a network of thick cables. Atop this second tower was a massive satellite dish. There was no door on High Tower. There was just a massive arch big enough for an Okuwamon and a half to pass through with ease. We walked forward and found ourselves in a massive room full of consoles and monitors and manned by several dozen Hagurumon, two Guardromon-sized elevators, one in each of the back corners of the room, and an incredibly high ceiling. But most impressively was what was waiting in the center of the room. On a raised round platform, connected to the tower’s systems by a network of cables and mechanical arms was the biggest Digimon I’d ever seen. He was bigger than Okuwamon by at least fifty percent. He was like a giant dragon made of metal. He had a massive black head, strong arms ending in long, powerful metal claws, a long, powerful-looking robotic tail, and two massive cannons on his back, pointing forward. There were many ever-changing holographic displays floating around his head which he watched intently. Some showed computer code and specs on Machine Digimon, while others were images of the general happenings within the Citadel.

My friends and I stopped dead and stared in awe at the sights before us. Hagurumon floated forward and said, “Machinedramon, the Digidestined have arrived.”

The mechanical dragon looked down at Hagurumon and then looked at us. He looked back up at the displays, and they disappeared. The cables linked to his body disconnected and retracted into the walls, and the mechanical arms detached and folded up into a sort of standby mode. The dragon stepped forward, shaking the ground beneath us, and lowered his massive head until he was looking right into my eyes.

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Digidestined,” the dragon said in a voice that sounded synthesized, like the voice that the Digicomp used, only much, much deeper. “I am Machinedramon, the ruler of Machine Citadel and leader of the Digiworld’s only armed forces. I have been wondering when you would arrive here.”

“We had to come Lord Machinedramon-,” I said

“Please,” the dragon said, straitening up but keeping his eyes trained on us, “just Machinedramon. I am no one’s ‘Lord’.”

I nodded respectfully, “We had to come and see you. Manipulamon is prepping a force to attack your Citadel as we speak.”

Jeremy stepped up to my side, “If the force is not already moving it will be on its way within the next few hours at most. Manipulamon had geared the force toward taking out the Citadel’s forces. The number of casualties that could result is unacceptable.”

The dragon looked up at the ceiling and grumbled, “Ah, Manipulamon. I could likely crush him myself if not for the fact that his forces actually rival mine. Yes, we’ve known about this attack for several hours now. It is made up of Serpenterramon-type Digimon of various levels. Manipulamon himself is not with them, the coward.” Machinedramon looked back down at us, “It is obvious that he plans to use the combined flight and digging abilities of the serpents to penetrate the wall.”

“Could he really destroy this Citadel?” Jen asked.

“Alone the Serpenterramon and their Perfect form WingedSerpenterramon are of no consequence to my forces. It is the Digimon that accompanies them that concerns me.” A holographic display appeared before us and an image of a metal snake with a segmented body, one segment having treads like a tank appeared on it. “He is called MetalSerpenterramon, a Digimon that rivals even mine and Manipulamon’s power. He, like me, is at a level beyond even Perfect; the Ultimate Level. If he were to attack the Citadel it is likely that, even with me at their side, my forces would be overrun.”

I took a deep breath, “We’ll help.”

The massive dragon seemed to sigh, relieved. “Thank you,” he said. “With your forces added to mine we should be able to come up with a strategy that will lead us to victory.”

“How many are there in Manipulamon’s army?” I asked him.

“We were never able to get an exact number reading,” said Machinedramon, “but it is clear that it would take nearly my entire force to defeat only the Adult and Perfect Level Digimon with an acceptable loss of forces.”

“Then you and your army move to intercept MetalSerpenterramon’s force,” said Jeremy, “leaving as many men as you feel comfortable with to assist us here. When MetalSerpenterramon sees that you have left the Citadel unprotected he should push past you, meaning to attack on his own.”

“When he gets here,” I said, wrapping up, “we’ll be waiting to take him down. Piece of cake.”

The dragon sighed again, “If anyone else were to ask to be entrusted with my Citadel I would not hesitate to say no, but you are the Digidestined. I trust you because, as the Digidestined, you can be trusted. You are here to help us. I will leave enough of my men behind to man several of the Citadel’s internal defense towers, but the rest will be up to you.”

I nodded, “We understand.”

Twenty minutes later we watched as Machinedramon lead a force of a few hundred Digimon, consisting of Guardromon, several robots made of large boxy chrome bodies with faces in their chests, domes for heads, and long flat arms, known as Mekanorimon, and several robot tanks with guns for hands and cannons in their faces, called Tankmon, through the gates and into the woods. We took up position outside the gate. Serpentmon, BlackColtmon, Jen, Coltmon, Sarah, Ponymon, Amanda, Chickomon, Jeremy, Mechmon, and I; we stood ready to face whatever was coming. Dokugamon, Birdramon, and Tuskmon remained inside the wall where it was safe. Several Guardromon and Mekanorimon were carried by automatic lifts up into the defense towers circling the portion of the wall closest to the gate, ready to fire out at the enemy.

Another twenty or so minutes later there was a series of explosions in the distance. I aimed the Digicomp handheld, searching for nearby movement, “Something big is coming this way fast.”

I wondered for a second, and then I asked, “Hey Jeremy, does that calculator of your have any idea is our Perfect Digimon can beat an Ultimate Digimon?”

“It’s uncertain,” he answered.

“What do you mean ‘can we beat an Ultimate Digimon’?” Sarah asked. “Machinedramon said that this thing is only as strong as Manipulamon, and Jen and I and our Digimon were too much for him.”

“That’s because he’s a Perfect Level Evil Digimon,” said Jeremy in a matter of fact way. “He was practically incapable of defending against the attacks of your Celestial Beast Digimon, Digimon specifically bred to fight Evil Digimon. Plus, when your two Digimon are together their power grows considerably. That’s why he ran, and that’s why he keeps sending his other forces against you instead of attacking himself. Against, say, an Insectoid Digimon, a type that has no specific weakness against your Digimon, your Digimon are just two more Digimon.”

“Well,” said Sarah, “that sucks.”

“Guys,” I said, looking up from the handheld, “he’s here.”

As I spoke several trees toppled over and a massive form emerged. It was the snake from the image, but it was bigger than I ever would have thought. The tank-like segment of its body was more than half as big as Machinedramon. The portion of his body that was ahead of the treads, the portion that contained his head, was as long as the Citadel wall was tall, and the portion that was the snake’s tail was three times the length of the other. Upon seeing us he opened his massive jaws wide and hissed.

“This,” said BlackColtmon with a hungry look in his eyes, “is going to be fun.”

The immense snake moved up on us quickly and called, “Neutron Fang!” He looked strait at Serpentmon and fired twin pinpoint beams from his eyes.

“Not today,” I said. I raised my Digivice and called, “Initiate Digivolution!”

Serpentmon sprang up and became Dragonterramon. He evaded the beams, which swept up the wall, hitting one of the defense towers, completely destroying it and the Guardromon that occupied it. The other machines began firing at the snake; the Guardromon firing missiles from their arms, their speed boosted by an electrical field projected by the defense towers, causing greater damage upon impact, and the Mekanorimon firing beams from their chests, their power gaining a boost from the defense towers’ power systems. But even with their power enhanced, the Machines were unable to put a dent in the metal plates that were bolted over MetalSerpenterramon’s body. I scanned it. It was the same nearly impenetrable metal as the plates over the wall.

I turned to the Machines in their towers and called up to them, “Fall back and leave this one to us.”

“You shouldn’t be so cocky,” said MetalSerpenterramon as the Machines retreated. “I am unbeatable!”

“We’ll see,” I said, and along with my friends I took out my Digivice and Digiplayer and connected them together. We passed our hands over our Crests, and our disks emerged. We inserted them and called, “Initiate, Digiplayer Digivolution!”

Dragonterramon jumped strait at the giant metal snake and called, “Dragonterramon, Digivolve to, WingedDragonterramon!” In his Perfect form my Digimon slammed into the enemy’s head, knocking it back.

“BlackColtmon, Direct Digivolve to!” He bypassed Adult Level and became his Perfect form, “JousterStaliamon!”

“Coltmon…”

“Ponymon…”

“Chickomon…”

“Mechmon…”

“…Direct Digivolve to…”

“MetalStaliamon!”

“TechnoFillimon!”

“MetalBrauntomon!”

“MegaMechamon!”

As the other Digimon finished Digivolving, WingedDragonterramon flapped his wings and rose into the air. MetalBrauntomon spread his metal blade “wings” and kicked up his jets, carrying himself up past the snake, close enough to slice it with his blades to no avail. While still up in the air MetalBrauntomon called out, “MetalBrauntomon, Mode Change to!” His robotic knees locked at fifty degree angles, and his jets, with his wings attached, rotated so that his wings were at a slight angle to each other instead of in a strait line, “Flight Mode!”

WingedDragonterramon and MetalBrauntomon took up positions to either side of the foe, and MetalBrauntomon and TechnoFillimon moved to stand in front of and behind the foe. MegaMechamon positioned himself below WingedDragonterramon, and JousterStaliamon stood below MetalBrauntomon. The six Digimon attacked, but their attacks did nothing except clang against the snake’s armor harmlessly, causing it to vibrate. Panels opened in the tank-like portion of the snake’s body and he called, “Metal Serpent Strike!” Beams shot from behind the panels, hitting all of the Digimon, reducing them to their Child Level forms.

“No way!” I said, but it had happened. We had finally lost one. I looked around. We were backed against the Citadel wall and gate, so our only route of escape would take us past the snake. We had nowhere to go.

“Now,” MetalSerpenterramon said, “who should I kill first?” He looked around some, and finally settled on me and my fellow Human’s. He was moving toward us when a barrage of small needles hit the back of his head and exploded. He turned to search for the source of the attack, and there was Serpentmon, standing up against the immense enemy, even though he knew that he could never win.

While the snake was distracted, I in my stupidity ran up and climbed onto the snake’s currently unmoving tread and jumped from there onto his back. When MetalSerpenterramon saw me he laughed and lowered his head, grabbing me with his metallic tongue and lifting me high into the air. He dropped me, letting me fall. If I hit the ground, I would die.

It was about then that my Crest began to glow. I closed my eyes. I could feel Serpentmon’s heart. He and I were on the same wavelength. We were both willing to stand up to our enemy, even if it cost us our lives. My Digiplayer slid from my pocket and hung in the air an arm length away, and my Neo Crest of Courage slid from my tag and became a disk. I grabbed it and swiped it through the input slot in the Digiplayer, calling, “Let’s show them our power. Initiate Warp Digivolution!”

A beam of light shot from the disk and hit Serpentmon. He grew, becoming WingedDragonterramon again. A he did he called, “Serpentmon, Warp Digivolve to!” The bones that made the frames for his mighty wings were replaced by metal surrounded by a solid metal frame, and his legs were replaced by fully robotic counterparts with nasty-looking curved metal claws. His left arm was replaced by a mechanical arm, ending in a disk-shaped shield with four holes in it. In his right talon appeared a laser rifle equipped with sights. A metal frame appeared around his lower jaw, and a portion of the left side of his face, including his left eye, became robotic as well. He spread his wings and leapt, catching me in his arms, “MetalDragonterramon!”

He set me down and rose into the air, circling his foe. “You were right,” he said to MetalSerpenterramon, “your armor is impenetrable, making you virtually invincible. But I noticed before that, when hit, your armor plates vibrate.”

“Rrrr,” the snake said. “You may be an Ultimate now like me, but you still can’t win.” He fired his eye beams again, “Neutron Fang!” MetalDragonterramon swerved, avoiding the attack, and rose up above the snake’s back, aiming his shield at the snake and calling, “Launcher Fireballs!” a barrage of fireballs shot from the holes in my Digimon’s shield, hitting the armor on MetalSerpenterramon’s back with enough concussive force to vibrate them so hard that the bolts came loose and the plate fell away. Beneath it was a mass of robotics and exposed circuitry.

MetalDragonterramon turned and took aim with his rifle, calling ‘Lightning Flame!” He fired a red-hot beam wreathed in electricity that tore through the snake’s inner mechanics. They exploded, and the massive snake cried out in pain, collapsing in the dirt face first before breaking down into data and dispersing into the air.

MetalDragonterramon landed and turned back into his Baby II Form, Snakemon. He collapsed, unconscious. I ran quickly to his side.

Manipulamon’s Final Strike; Battle Grankuwagamon!

After the battle with MetalSerpenterramon, my team and I waited at the Machine Citadel for the return of Machinedramon and his forces. We had hoped to ask him to join us in our fight against Manipulamon. With Machinedramon’s army on our side we couldn’t lose! Even going into battle against the serpents Machinedramon and his forces already knew that they would lose less than a dozen soldiers before their combined fire could destroy the enemy. Anyone that powerful would definitely be a big help. We thought that Machinedramon and his army were invincible. That’s why we were so surprised by the sight of his forces as they made their way back to the Citadel. In less than an hour Machinedramon’s force of one hundred fifty Digimon had been reduced to six. And the immense Machinedramon himself wasn’t much better off. In addition to being scorched and dented the mighty machine had taken severe damage. The armor was stripped away from his right arms as if he had used it to deflect a massive attack, and his right side cannon had nearly been blown off, hanging now by a few cables. His tail was also connected by just a few fiber optic cables. The plating over his right eye had been blown off, revealing a large red bulb and an array of circuits.

I sighed, “You know, sometimes I really hate this world.”

“Manipulamon had anticipated our plan,” said Machinedramon. He, my companions, and I were back in High Tower. Several panels in the walls had opened revealing an extensive array of repair arms that hurried to reassemble their master. The surviving men were being repaired in a complex just behind the back wall of Machinedramon’s control room. “Manipulamon re-wrote the data of the Adult and Perfect Level serpents so that every strand of their code was like a small but powerful bomb. If I had not detected the irregularity in their data and defended as myself and as many of my men as I could, the blast would have likely killed us all.”

Machinedramon paused and then looked strait at us, one of the arms replacing the missing part of his face as he did so. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but my first duty is to the Citadel. I must oversee the restoration of my army. I cannot assist you in the coming battle against Manipulamon.”

“We understand,” I said. “We’re sorry for your loses.”

“I thank you,” said Machinedramon, “but they are not truly lost.”

I was confused, “What do you mean?”

“You saw the dish atop the tower beside this one?”

I nodded and Jen said, “Yeah, I remember thinking that it was a radar or something.”

“That dish is possibly the greatest technological marvel in this world,” Machinedramon explained. “It draws in and collects all free floating data in the region and transforms it into code which is then beamed to the Fractal Code Generator in this tower. The Generator separates the data from enemy Digimon and general stray data from the data of my loyal troops and reconstructs their fractal codes from it. Then the repair facility constructs a new body for every soldier lost and the fractal codes are implanted. Even with all of our technology this process takes quite some time to complete.”

“A data collection dish,” I said under my breath. “Oh God!” I had just had a pretty horrible idea. I ran outside. Sarah, Amanda, Ponymon, and Chickomon watched me, confused, but Jen and Jeremy and our Digimon followed me.

“What’s up boss?” she asked, but I didn’t answer. I had to be sure first.

“Jeremy,” I asked, turning and staring up at the dish, my eyes wide, “can your calculator tell us what would happen to a Digimon if it absorbed all of the data that that dish collected?”

“One Digimon,” he said, “incorporating all of the serpents’ data and the data of all of the machines? He would get stronger. A lot stronger.”

“But no Digimon could do it,” said Mechmon, “It would tear them apart.”

“One Digimon could,” I said, my tone grim, a stern look on my face. “That’s it. Is has to be.”

“What?” Jeremy asked.

“I was wondering, if Manipulamon really did anticipate ours and Machinedramon’s plan, then why did he send MetalSerpenterramon ahead to face us. Did he really think that His snake baddy would win? And if he did, what if something went wrong and Machinedramon was still okay to fight at the end of the battle with the Serpenterramon and WingedSerpenterramon? He’d come back and crush MetalSerpenterramon. And then there’s the bombs themselves. It makes no sense tactically, unless Manipulamon’s only real purpose was to remove a good deal of the enemy forces and put a large amount of data into the air at once.

“If I’m right, that was only the first wave. Another force rivaling the first is probably already on its way to capture the Citadel and that dish tower.”

“I don’t understand,” said Jen.

“Manipulamon can reshape any data and bend it to his will. Since he’s only ever done it to his own troops and never to his enemies we have to assume that it works best on something that can’t offer any resistance. Like the data that was just collected by that dish. If Manipulamon were to use his abilities to compress it and combine it with his own data…”

I let my voice trail off. There was nothing else for me to say. The next attack had to be thwarted at all costs. If Manipulamon gained control of the dish, he would grow so strong that nothing would be able to stop him.

I went back inside and told Machinedramon what I had realized. He was silent for a long time before he finally authorized me to take control of his remaining troops in his absence. He called them together near the gate. I had under my command six Guardromon, two Tankmon, and three Mekanorimon. All that remained of Machinedramon’s army between the Digimon that returned with him and the Digimon that he left behind with me during the previous battle.

“There are eleven of you. There are fourteen defense towers, “I said. “Which of you are the most heavily armed?”

“We are,” one of the Tankmon answered, gesturing to himself and his nearly identical ally.

“Then you two will cover the gaps left by the empty towers.”

The two Tankmon nodded.

“I want one of you in the tower five to the right of the gate, and the other in the tower facing the opposite direction. Next I want the remaining Digimon to set up as I have drawn here. Be prepared to battle multiple fast aerial opponents. Manipulamon’s two primary sources of troops are the serpents and the Insectoids. He already sent serpents, so the next wave will more than likely be Insectoids.” The Tankmon, Mekanorimon and all but one of the Guardromon nodded agreement.

The one Digimon who didn’t agree asked in a rather rude manner, “And why are we taking orders from you? Digidestined or not you are only a Human.”

“You are taking orders from me,” I said, “because your leader ordered you to, and because I might be the only chance you have of making it through this attack alive.”

The defense towers really were amazing. Not only did they boost the speed and power of the occupant’s attacks, they also boosted the range by as much as seventy percent. Also, according to Machinedramon, each tower was also equipped with an automatic energy wave with the power to redirect a small, fast moving object away from the towers in an effort to prevent damage to the city. Several panels opened in the top of the wall and automatic flak and gun turrets emerged. They would do little against an Ultimate Digimon, or even a Perfect Digimon, but they would go a long way toward repelling any Adult Level Digimon among the attackers.

My team and I, as well as Birdramon, Dokugamon, and Tuskmon, took up position outside the gate again, ready to defend the Citadel with our lives. It was a good thing we were ready, because we didn’t have to wait for long.

The force that we were up against today wasn’t the largest ever, but it was the most powerful. Ten Okuwamon and thirty Kuwagamon were being led by a much more menacing black insect, like a giant black Kuwagamon the size of Machinedramon. I scanned him and said, reading from the handheld, “The black one is Grankuwagamon, the Ultimate Level form of Okuwamon. He’s gonna be trouble.”

As I spoke Grankuwagamon rose up above his troops and stopped, hanging in the air. I could hear him call out to them, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. But almost as soon as he had spoken five Okuwamon and ten Kuwagamon broke away from the main force and dove strait at the wall. I cried out to the gunners, “FIRE!”

Before the Insectoids were within range of the defense towers, the machines opened fire. Two Okuwamon and four Kuwagamon fell, and the others pulled up, flying high overhead, easily avoiding their foes’ attacks. The machines continued to fire until they suddenly found themselves overrun by several dozen much smaller Digimon. I looked closely. The Insectoids flying overhead had been carrying other Digimon on their backs. They were green worms with purple claws, purple beaks, and purple stingers. Each one was about as big as a forty pound dog. The flying Digimon had dropped them on the machines. Now they were too busy fighting off the worms to launch their attacks. The three remaining Okuwamon and the six remaining Kuwagamon from the first wave swooped in, ready to destroy the machines, while the remaining Okuwamon and Kuwagamon forces moved in toward my team and I.

“Birdramon,” I said, turning toward my friend, “get up there and get those worms off of the soldiers.” She took off, flapping her wings and blowing the worms over the wall where they were destroyed by the citizens inside. They were weaker than the soldiers, but they were still more than capable of defeating some Child Digimon. But Birdramon’s efforts came too late. By the time she got rid of the worms on the last of the soldiers, the Insectoids were on top of them. Nearly half of the troops were wiped out. Only two Mekanorimon and four Guardromon remained.

Meanwhile the remaining Insectoids grew closer and closer. They made a pass overhead and dropped more of the worms, which I learned are called DoKunemon, in an attempt to distract us. “You ready Partner?” I asked the green snake on my shoulder. He nodded and began to glow, becoming Serpentmon. Serpentmon jumped up into the air and called out his attack, “Serpent Strike!” He released a spray of needles that impaled the DoKunemon and reduced them to data. The Insectoids circled back around.

“You guys handle the Okuwamon and Kuwagamon,” I said to the others. “Serpentmon, BlackColtmon and I will take care of Grankuwagamon. I ran toward the massive black insect that hung above us, my Digimon close behind.

“You dare challenge me alone?” Grankuwagamon asked me.

“No,” I said, gesturing to me Digimon, “we do. I pulled the Digivice and Digiplayer from my pocket and connected them together, inserted two Digidisks, and called, “Initiate Digiplayer Digivolution!”

“Serpentmon, Direct Digivolve to, WingedDragonterramon!”

“BlackColtmon, Direct Digivolve to, JousterStaliamon!”

The two Digimon split away from each other and circled the foe. JousterStaliamon turned and called, “Lightning Lance!” His lance stretched out, charged with electricity, reaching toward the enemy. Grankuwagamon spun and batted the lance away with his massive claws. Then he struck with his other claw. Energy ran down the lance, slicing it into pieces. JousterStaliamon was unarmed. Grankuwagamon raised his claw and called, “Dimension Scissor!” A wave of energy flew from his pincers and hit JousterStaliamon, tossing him up through the air. He landed among the pieces of his lance and reverted to his Child form.

Grankuwagamon turned back toward WingedDragonterramon, and found the dragon in his face, kicking. The massive bug was nearly knocked out of the air. But he recovered and jabbed at the dragon with energy charged claws. There was no time for WingedDragonterramon to dodge. I have to act, I thought, and I swiped my Digidisk through the slot in my Digiplayer, “Initiate Ultimate Digivolution!” Energy washed over WingedDragonterramon. He threw his wings around himself, to defend against the attack. The blast obscured him from view, but when it faded away, not only was he still more or less unharmed, but he wasn’t WingedDragonterramon anymore. He was the Ultimate Digimon, MetalDragonterramon. He threw open his wings and roared. But Grankuwagamon was unconcerned. He swiped again and again with his claws. MetalDragonterramon dodged several attacks, but then one of the attacks came too close. He couldn’t avoid it. He raised his shield, deflecting the high impact blow, but costing him the use of his mechanical arm. Still he didn’t let it get to him. Without missing a beat my Digimon raised his rifle and fired, pushing the enemy back.

“Finish this up,” I said.

MetalDragonterramon took aim and fired again, but the insect rose to his feet and raised an energy charged claw, absorbing the attack and sending it back. It hit, and MetalDragonterramon was thrown to the ground. I ran to his side. He was barely conscious.

“Back off of my friends,” BlackColtmon cried. He ran to my side.

“MetalDragonterramon’s out cold, Bud,” I said. “Looks like it’s up to us this time. You ready?”

“I was born ready.”

“Then here we go!” The Neo Crest of Friendship slid from its tag and became a disk. I swiped it through the input slot of my Digiplayer.

“I won’t let you do that,” said Grankuwagamon, raising his pincers.

“Initiate,” I called, “Warp Digivolution!”

BlackColtmon Jumped up between me and Grankuwagamon’s oncoming attack. He began to glow, growing to the size of JousterStaliamon. His glowing body deflected the attack away, and he called, “BlackColtmon, Warp Digivolve to!” He became a man-shaped form of darkness, the same dark shade as BlackColtmon’s fur, wreathed in blue light. The light took form, becoming armor that clamped onto his body. He was a blue knight. A silver helm appeared over his head, the visor lowering over his eyes. A yellow plume appeared atop his helm, a shield emblazoned with the Crest of Friendship appeared in his left hand, and a cape colored and patterned like the blanket on JousterStaliamon’s back cascaded down from his neck. The pieces of JousterStaliamon’s lance rose up and came back together, becoming a sword. He caught it in his right hand and pointed it at the foe, “Knighthramon!”

As my newest Digimon lowered to the ground MetalDragonterramon found his feet again. He set down his rifle and popped the elbow of his mechanical arm into place. There was a crack and a spark, and his arm was working again. He picked up his rifle and the two Digimon looked at each other and nodded, jumping into the air. MetalDragonterramon flapped his wings, and Knighthramon summoned energy beneath his feet forming an energy platform that he could ride through the air. He flicked his sword as if flinging water off of it, and it flashed with energy, becoming a lance. Knighthramon weaved between the insects swinging claws and stabbed with his lance, catching Grankuwagamon between two of the plates that made up his exoskeleton, calling, “Knight’s-Blade Strike!” Pulses of electrical energy slid off of the knight’s lance, cutting into Grankuwagamon’s armor, gouging pieces of it away. Grankuwagamon cried out in pain, and Knighthramon let himself fall away. MetalDragonterramon took aim at the point where his allies attack had hit.

“This ends it,” My dragon said. “Lightning Flame!” He fired, blasting all the way through the giant bug’s body, splitting him in half. My Digimon and I turned and we made our way back toward the rest of the combatants. One of the Okuwamon had managed to force the gates open and three Kuwagamon slipped inside. A Guardromon who had lowered himself down to the ground from one of the nearby towers managed to cut off two of the insects, but the third made it through, bearing down on a group of mechanical bugs called Kokuwamon. He raised his pincers to attack the terrified Child Digimon. There was no way that we would reach them in time.

That’s when a new Digimon appeared. He was a small mechanical dog with a tazer on the tip of his tail and sharp metal claws and teeth. He leapt at the Kuwagamon fearlessly, knocking its pincers off course. Kuwagamon swatted the dog away and turned his attention back to the Kokuwamon, just before taking a sword through the back. MetalDragonterramon, Knighthramon, and I looked around. Guardromon fired one more missile at the only Kuwagamon left standing and it broke down into bits of data. Otherwise, there were no more Insectoids left standing.

We’d done it. We’d won. At least that’s what we thought. When everyone realized that the battle was over we started cheering. It had been a difficult battle for everyone. But the cheering was interrupted by a slow clapping coming from atop the dish tower.

Oh sheet!

I turned my head slowly to look for the source of the sound, as did everyone else. There he was. Somehow in all of the confusion Manipulamon had managed to make in over the wall and into the Citadel. We had lost.

“Very impressive Digidestined,” said Manipulamon, “but you were too late. I have connected directly to this tower and the computers to which it feed the data it collects. As I speak all of the data collected during today’s battles is being fed directly into my fractal code. I now possess the data lost by Grankuwagamon, MetalSerpenterramon, and even the data bled by the injured Machinedramon. I have more than enough to Digivolve.”

I smiled as he finished speaking. “I should have realized sooner,” I said, “that your goal was to Digivolve.”

“It wouldn’t have done you any good,” Manipulamon replied.

I looked angrily into my enemies eyes and cried, “Defense towers, fire!”

The Digimon in the defense towers opened fire, but Manipulamon raised his hand and their attacks disappeared. Then he flicked his wrist and every defense tower and every Digimon in a defense tower exploded. He laughed, and his face grew dark.

“We have to stop him from Digivolving,” I said. “Digidestined Digimon, attack!”

I ran toward Manipulamon as mine and my team’s six Digimon flew strait at the foe, Birdramon close behind. Behind me ran my team mates, Dokugamon, and Tuskmon. The Digimon were inches from the target when he jumped back, his face contorting, and floated on the air, landing on the edge of the wall behind him.

MetalDragonterramon and Knighthramon slammed into him, and they all fell down the outside of the wall and out of site.

here is chapter eighteen. the final battle against Manipulamon begins at last.

[spoiler=Chapter Eighteen]

ViralManipulamon

The sky was darkened by a massive black cloud that blocked out the sun. Birdramon circled around and set down in front of us humans. We climbed onto her massive feet, and she carried us over the wall, setting us down. Then she flew back over and carried Dokugamon and Tuskmon over before rising into the air with the other Digimon.

MetalDragonterramon and Knighthramon were still on the ground with Manipulamon. Manipulamon was going nuts. His muscles were growing larger. It was clear that he had to be beaten sooner rather than later. MetalDragonterramon raised his rifle and took aim at Manipulamon’s face, but the foe swatted the weapon away. So MetalDragonterramon called, “Terra Strike!” His now empty claws glowed white and he swiped at the foe. The attack had no effect. Manipulamon swung his arms wildly, throwing my Digimon to the ground. He roared, and his skin grew black as night, his eyes glowing red. He grabbed his head and stumbled into the forest and out of sight.

MetalBrauntomon, MegaMechamon, MetalStaliamon, TechnoFillimon and Birdramon landed beside MetalDragonterramon, Knighthramon and us Humans. My dragon picked up his rifle as Dokugamon, Tuskmon, and the mechanical dog from earlier walked up to us. “Hey,” I said, “you’re that Digimon from before. You fought Kuwagamon.”

“Yeah,” he said, “my names TechnoPupmon. I want to help you fight.”

“Good,” I said. “I get the feeling that we could use all the help we can get.”

As I spoke and as we all watched several of the trees toppled. A massive form rose up within the trees. It was as tall as any one of the Citadel towers with a long neck. Above and below each of the creature’s arms was a long tentacle. It had a thick strong tail, and its head was the same as Manipulamon’s, except more animalistic. The massive creature swung his tail, sweeping nearly a dozen trees out of the way, looked up into the black cloud above and called, “I am ViralManipulamon!”

“Oh crap,” said Jeremy. “He’s huge! How do we fight something that big!?”

“Easy,” said MegaMechamon. “Like this. Weapon Assault!”

Every weapon on the mechanical Digimon’s body fired at once. The attack hit, having absolutely no effect on ViralManipulamon at all.

“No way,” said MegaMechamon. “He didn’t even feel it!”

“My turn,” said MetalBrauntomon. He charged forward calling, “Metal Dino-Strike!” He jumped into the air, switching to Flight Mode, and flew strait at the foe, meaning to slice him with his blade-like wings. But before MetalBrauntomon could get close, ViralManipulamon swatted him with one of his massive tentacles, sending the metal dinosaur plunging into the ground.

“Enough games,” I said. “MetalDragonterramon, Knighthramon, time to show this monster what real Digimon can do.”

My two Digimon nodded and shot into the air, moving strait toward the towering opponent.

“Don’t give him any time to react!” I commanded.

Knighthramon brandished his lance, slinging energy from its tip at the foe, calling, “Knight’s-Blade Slash!” The energy wave from Knighthramon’s lance hit the foe’s chest, hanging there, pushing him back.

“And to follow through,” said MetalDragonterramon. “Lightning Flame!” He fired his beam at the point of impact of his ally’s attack. The energy combined, expanded, and exploded, throwing the massive Digimon off of his feet and onto his back.

“Now finish it,” I said. The Digimon rose up and circled the foe. All six of our Digimon fired their attacks at once, hitting the fallen foe dead on, causing an explosion that shook the ground, kicking dust a hundred feet into the air. It can’t be that easy.

I was right. Before the dust could even settle the massive Digimon was already on his feet, throwing his arms wide, dispersing the cloud of dust around him as he roared. I examined him, looking for visible wounds. There was only a small burnt patch in his chest as testament to our combined efforts. The massive foe swung his head and neck form left to right, roaring, as he swung his tentacles wildly, rippling the air, sending waves of compressed air, like massive blades, flying in all directions. Several of the air attacks hit, causing the aerial Digimon to tumble through the air and lose their bearings. Then ViralManipulamon raised one massive fist and leapt at the Digimon, punching with all of his strength. His attack hit MetalBrauntomon and MegaMechamon, sending them crashing to the ground, where they reverted to their Child forms. We were down in numbers by two, and even further from defeating our opponent that we had been before.

I had to come up with a plan to turn the tides in our favor. Up until then I had had a bad habit, as you know, of making things worse when I tried to help. I decided then and there that I would never act rashly again. That I would think my actions through before I carried them out. I thought hard, and I came up with an idea.

“Guys,” I said, calling up to the remaining Digimon, “keep him busy and try to keep him in one spot!” I turned to Dokugamon and said, “I have an idea, but I’ll need your help to pull it off.”

Above me four shapes weaved between ViralManipulamon’s attacks, keeping close enough that he didn’t have to move from the ring of trees that encircled him to attack. Dokugamon returned to my side and said, “I’m done.”

I nodded and looked up at my team’s four flying Digimon and Birdramon. “Okay guys,” I said, “break off and regroup!” The Digimon complied, veering away from ViralManipulamon. The massive Digimon roared at them and stepped forward, stepping into the trees ahead of him and catching his foot in the layers upon layers of spider webs that were set up between them. He yanked his foot free, but the inertia caused him to stumble back. He tripped over the trees behind him and fell into them, getting caught in the layers upon layers of web strewn between them. He struggled to free up his arms and tentacles so that he could rise to his feet, but he was too slow. Birdramon dropped a barrage of fireballs on the massive foe and then swooped down to grab Tuskmon by his horns while the other Digimon moved into place to attack. The called their attacks and fired, hitting the enemy with multiple barrages. They ceased their attacks, and Birdramon flew over the foe, dropping Tuskmon from above. He fell right at the massive form and called, “Tusk Slam!” hitting ViralManipulamon square in the chest at high speed. He bounced back up, stunned, and Birdramon caught him again, carrying him away.

I really hope that did it, I thought, Because I’m out of ideas.

But just to be sure I called up to the Digimon, “One more time for good measure!”

The four Digimon fired their attacks while Birdramon and Tuskmon circled around them. The attacks were deflected by three tentacles that rose up out of the cloud of debris. I watched as ViralManipulamon pushed himself back up onto his feet. One of his tentacles seemed crippled, and their were several rips in his chest where the attacks had ripped through his flesh from the rips oozed a viscous black substance. At first I thought it was blood, but then I noticed that the ooze was actually pulling the wounds closed, slowly but surely returning the massive Digimon to full strength. I looked for weaknesses in the creature’s body and I noticed that their were no repairs happening to the crippled tentacle. I wasn’t sure what this meant, but I knew it would be important.

ViralManipulamon roared and called, “Manipulate Energy!” He held his tentacles in an X shape (or as close to an X shape as he could with one lame tentacle), and aimed his palms forward. Energy traveled along the tentacles and into his palms, building in the form of a red glowing orb. The energy within the orb discharged out in the form of a nearly one-hundred-yard-thick energy beam.

“Lookout!” called TechnoFillimon. The Digimon scattered and managed to avoid ViralManipulamon’s attack. The beam carried through, hitting the nearby Citadel wall, leaving a huge smoking crater deep in the surface where it hit. Metal and cement were fused together at the molecular level by the extreme heat of the blast.

I stared wide-eyed at the damage that the beam had wrought, Oh sheet! I called up to the Digimon, “Uh, guys. Word of advice; don’t let that beam hit you.”

“I’m sure we’ll all keep that in mind,” said MetalDragonterramon as he swung back around behind the enemy and launched his attack at the foe’s back. Knighthramon swooped past the foe, flying the width of his chest, slicing with his sword, leaving a trail of static and black ooze in his wake. ViralManipulamon swung his tentacles at Knighthramon, who managed to dodge all but the third. He turned just in time to lift his shield up, braced by his sword. But despite his efforts the shield was knocked away, sent spiraling through the air, and he was thrown to the ground. He crashed, dropped his sword, and slid a good twenty feet before he finally stopped.

“Knighthramon!” I cried. I ran to him, but he stood, saying, “I’m alright.” He was favoring his left arm, which was obviously broken, but he ran forward and grabbed his sword off of the ground and jumped into the air.

MetalDragonterramon fired a barrage of fireballs right in ViralManipulamon’s face, disorienting him. Meanwhile, Knighthramon jumped up and stabbed his sword into the creature’s chest and pulled up, using the sword as leverage to launch himself, feet first, all the way up to the foe’s head. He kicked ViralManipulamon in the jaw, and then fell back down, grabbing his sword, and slashing back and forth across the creature’s torso as he fell back to the ground. ViralManipulamon stumbled backward. At that moment MetalStaliamon and TechnoFillimon flew strait at him. MetalStaliamon fired his Metal Hoof Blade attack, and TechnoFillimon called, “Tech Filli-Beams!” firing beams of light from her hooves and a beam of static from the tip of each of the metal “wings” attached to the triangular box on her back. Her beams combined with the beams launched by her ally, and the fire from Birdramon’s attack. The large amount of heat and energy hit ViralManipulamon in the gut. He stepped back and then dropped to one knee, his head and tentacles drooping. But he rose again as quickly as he had fallen, waving his tentacles wildly, firing wave after wave of compressed air at his four flying targets, ignoring the injured Knighthramon almost completely.

That is until he suddenly found Knighthramon right in his face, sword raised. ViralManipulamon reached up with a tentacle and swatted the already injured Digimon out of the air. Knighthramon lost his grip on his blade and it flew into the path of one of ViralManipulamon’s attacks. The attack hit the blade, causing it to shatter.

MetalDragonterramon was forced to use his shield to deflect a tentacle that he could not dodge, and the force of the blow caused the metal arm to splinter and hang limp, its internal machinery destroyed. Another tentacle hit MetalStaliamon in the side, denting his armor, destroying one of his boosters, and severing one of his side mounted blades.

All the while the black ooze was pulling ViralManipulamon’s wounds closed and sealing them almost as fast as we could injure him. If not for the one busted tentacle you would not have known that we’d hurt him at all.

“Well,” I said, “this could be going better.”
