[spoiler=Chapter Two]

The Nokitas

I awoke later to the light of the sun peeking through an unknown window. I looked around, confused. My chest and head hurt, and my right arm felt like someone had tried to rip it off just above the wrist. Worst of all, I couldn’t remember why. I realized that I was lying back on a couch, so I sat up. I looked myself over. My right arm was bandaged from my wrist up to my elbow. Blood had soaked almost all the way through, turning most of the white bandage a deep crimson. I ran my fingers over the wound. Even through the bandages, I could feel fresh stitches.

I looked around. I was in an apartment of some sort. It was furnished, but there were no personal items anywhere. I could hear muffled voices coming from somewhere else in the apartment, so I rose slowly to my feet and walked toward the only doorway out of the room.

Upon stepping through the doorway, I found myself in a hall. To my right was an entry way, a door leading to the outside, and a doorway into the kitchen. To my left were three closed doors. The voices were coming from behind the closest door on the left hand side. I walked slowly toward the door. The voices were too muffled to be recognizable. Then I heard a voice I did recognize.

“I’m gonna go check on John,” a voice directly behind the door declared, and the door opened. Sarah was standing on the other side. “John,” she cried, “you’re okay!”

“Sarah,” I asked, “what’s going on?” I looked into the room. It was a good size, with a couch against the far wall, a dresser, and a large bed. Jeremy was sitting on the couch with Mechmon by his side. Across from them, on the edge of the bed sat an unidentified boy of roughly fifteen, with dark hair so silky that it looked blue. Next to him sat a small, blue-furred humanoid dog wearing a red headband and red boxing gloves. Sarah and Amanda sat on the floor with Serpentmon, Chickomon, Sarah’s child Digimon, the small horse Ponymon, and a brown-haired girl of about eleven. Standing next to the girl was a small, gray-furred dragon with a dog-like face and tiny black wings. The girl held an un-hatched Digitama in her lap. BlackColtmon was sulking in the corner.

“What do you mean ‘what happened’?” Sarah asked, as everyone turned toward me, watching with interest. “Don’t you remember? You were fighting those Digimon that have been attacking downtown.”

“You summoned up some kind of armor,” the strange boy cut in, standing up and walking toward me. “You went after Myotismon yourself and got hit by his attack. You got a nasty gash on your arm.” The boy offered me his hand, “I’m Zald Nokita.” I shook his hand, and he gestured to the young girl, the dragon and the dog, “This is my sister Carmensita and our Digimon, Maria and Gaomon.”

I was speechless. Everything was rushing back to me. I pressed my left palm to my head, How could I be so stupid?!

Serpentmon rushed over to me, springing up and coiling around my arm. “Good to see you up and about,” he said

I nodded, and then to the entire room I asked, “Okay, what’s going on here, where is here, and how did I get here. Answer the last question first.”

“Me and my brother brought you,” said the girl, Carmensita. She started to get up, but Zald stopped her.

“Carmen, wait here. John, if you’d please come with me to the living room, we can discuss this.” He gestured toward the room where I’d just woken up. His voice and posture were commanding, and his face was almost unreadable. I was suspicious. I shot Jeremy a look that said, “Keep an eye open. I’m not sure about this guy.” He nodded.

I smiled politely at Zald and said, “Yeah, okay.”

Zald and I walked out into the living room. “Sorry for being so mysterious,” he said, “but I want to answer your questions, and there are some things that I won’t discuss in front of my sister. In order to explain myself completely, I must touch on these subjects.”

“Why won’t you discuss them in front of your sister?” Serpentmon asked.

“I don’t want to hurt her,” Zald answered. I sat down on the couch, Serpentmon slithering down my arm and onto the couch beside me. Zald leaned against the opposite wall. “I’m an emancipated minor,” Zald began. “I was always overly bright when it came to numbers, and I was out into a position where, if I were to become emancipated, I would be able to enter into a leadership position in an American branch of a prominent Japanese company. I took the opportunity. My family needed money. My father died many years ago, and my mother was struggling.

“I was successful. The company realized that they needed me. My position was secure. I started sending money to my family, but it wasn’t long before my mother contracted cancer. Not even the company’s dime could cure her, so she asked me to take my sister Carmensita with me and return to work, to spare my sister the pain of losing her only remaining parent. I honored her request.”

“So Carmensita doesn’t know about your mother?” I asked.

“No,” Zald replied, “she doesn’t know. And I’d like to keep it that way.”

I didn’t quite agree with Zald’s point of view, but I decided to respect his wishes. I nodded. Zald nodded back, and then continued.

“To answer your questions,” Zald said, “this is my apartment. Carmen and I just moved here from Chicago. I move a lot because of work. I heard the sound of fighting last night. It sounded close by, so I decided to check it out. I saw you falling, and my Digimon and I decided to help. Gaomon’s the one who caught you as you fell.”

I nodded, That explains the blue blur I saw.

“Gaomon used his rapid kicks to assist your friends’ Digimon in repelling your assailants,” Zald continued, “and then we brought you back here to recover. I did some patching up on your arm. I figured that you wouldn’t want to be taken to a hospital and have to explain a Digimon wound to them.”

I nodded again, “You figured right.” Things were finally starting to make sense, but one thing remained unexplained.

“How did you get Digimon partners?” I asked.

Zald smiled a smile that spoke of a fond memory being recalled. “It was right after I brought Carmen back with me,” he said. “I don’t know how it happened, or even why, but one day Carmen and I found these small devices and were pulled into another world. A Digital World.” He removed a Digivice from his pocked and showed it to me. It was different from mine. More simple. It was a pale blue and almost box-shaped, with a small screen and three buttons; one to the left of the screen, and two to the right of the screen.

“We met our Digimon in the Digital World,” Zald said, “and we spent about a week there with them before we were pulled back home, our Digimon along with us. In the Digital World, we fought in many battles alongside our Digimon, becoming close to them very fast. The peaceful Digimon came to trust us, especially Carmen. Some of them even asked her to care for an orphaned egg that they had found, believing that she would be better to it that they cold.”

“I you found Digivices and you have Digimon partners,” I said, “then you must be Digidestined like us. That means you have a special purpose, just like me and my friends.” I stood up and looked Zald in the eyes, “You being here right now is no coincidence. Being a Digidestined is all about destiny. You and your sister are meant to help in the fight against those Digimon from last night. Will you help us fight?”

Zald frowned and answered, “I’m sorry, but no. I have to think of my sister. You’re strong. I’m sure that, now that you know what you’re up against, you’ll be able to win easily.”

“I’ll personally guarantee your sister’s safety,” I assured, “and she’ll have her Digimon with her.”

“No,” said Zald, “I’m sorry. We’re having lunch soon. You can eat with us, but then I’d like you to go.”

I nodded. “Alright then,” I said politely. “Thank you for helping us.”

We ate lunch with the Nokitas. Gaomon cooked various foreign dishes, the names of which I can’t pronounce. The food was amazing. As he cooked, Gaomon explained that his cooking skills were legendary, and that he went so far to preserve them that he fought entirely with his feet in order to protect his hands. I liked the Nokitas, and I would have liked to spend more time with them, but when the meal ended, I honored Zald’s wishes and my team and I left.

Our Digimon reverted to their smaller forms, and we walked out of Zald’s building, and Sarah asked, “What now?”

“Now we find our enemies and we finish this fight, once and for all.”

“No problem,” said BlackMainemon arrogantly. “We have our opponents outnumbered, and we have you human’s, where our opponent’s don’t have partners.”

“Actually,” I said, “I think they might.”

“Might what?” Snakemon asked.

“Have a partner,” I said.

“What makes you think that?” Jeremy asked.

I turned to my friends, my face serious and said, “I saw him. I saw him as I fell. I looked into his eyes and I could tell that, if we don’t stop him, he’ll kill us all.”

We went to see Officer Thompson again next. We told him that we’d managed to repel the attackers from their latest target, but that we hadn’t defeated them.

“We have to go back tonight,” I said. “These Digimon are being led by a human who seems to enjoy watching people die. This makes them much more dangerous than we ever could have guessed.”

“I won’t let you go back out there again,” said Thompson, eyeing my bandages. “I should never have let you go at all.”

Crap, I thought. I have to keep Thompson and his men out of harm’s way. Only we can protect them.

That’s when I came up with the perfect solution. Thompson would be safe if he was with us…

“I know that look,” said Thompson, watching me closely. “I see it on my kids’ faces when they’ve just come up with some dumb idea. What are you thinking?”

I smiled, “Well, I was thinking that we should go back out there tonight, but that you should come with us.”

Thompson thought for a second and then said, “Yeah, okay. You’ve got a deal.”

[spoiler=Chapter Three]

The Face-Off

My smaller-than-usual team, with Thompson in tow, made its way to the site of the last attack and waited for nightfall. A nine square block perimeter around the bar had been made off limits, thanks to the police, ensuring that no one would stumble upon the battle to come.

“Shouldn’t we be searching again?” Sarah asked.

“No,” I answered. “I saw our real opponent’s eyes. He’s not finished with us yet. He’ll be here to finish what he started.”

“Maybe we should get behind something,” said Thompson, his gun out, but lowered. “We’re exposed here in the street. He could sneak up on us and pick us off.”

“Never,” Mechmon said. He was standing completely still. “I have powerful sensors built into my body that can measure vibrations in the surface and air over a wide radius. It works best when I’m still, which, of course, I am.”

“And we have this,” I said, holding up the pocket-sized portable Digicomp. “Its not one hundred percent accurate in some regards, but it’s perfectly capable of detecting Digimon signatures, especially ones in motion. When they make their move, we’ll know.”

“Oh,” said Thompson, “okay then.”

It was less than twenty minutes before Mechmon spoke again. “I’m reading four figures incoming. They’re moving fast. South, eleven hundred meters.”

“I see ‘em,” I said as four Digimon signatures appeared in the handheld’s screen. I turned to the south, Thompson following my lead. The others did the same. I summoned my armor, but I waited to draw my sword, choosing to keep the Digicomp at the ready instead.

This is too easy, I thought. Something’s up.

“They’re gone!” Mechmon exclaimed. I checked my scanner. Sure enough, the figures were gone. Then…

“There they are,” I said. The blips had reappeared on my screen, this time about one and a third miles away, coming from the northeast. Now I was sure.

“Digicomp,” I asked, “can Myotismon or Bakemon create solid illusions?”

“No,” the Digicomp’s AI answered in its mechanical female voice.

“Forget the scanners,” I said. “The signals are false. Get ready for an ambush. Also, be aware that either there’s a fifth Digimon who can create solid illusions, or the Digidestined has powers too.”

“We should Digivolve to Perfect Level,” said Jeremy, “so we’re ready.” I nodded.

“I can’t let you do that!” came a wicked-sounding male voice, coming from above us. My team and I tried to summon the power from our Crests, but as we did, several small, translucent orbs fell from above us, surrounding the Crests. They seemed to disappear, but I could still feel them there, blocking the Crests’ powers. I looked up, even as I put away the Digicomp handheld and drew my sword, trying to get a look at the speaker.

“Where is he?” Amanda asked, her voice fearful.

“He’s on the roof of that building,” said Thompson, his weapon trained. “He sounded closer, but I can see him, he’s definitely up there.”

“Go Adult Level,” I commanded, and my team and I called out in unison, “Initiate Digivolution!”

“Serpentmon, Digivolve to,” he became the black dragon, “Dragonterramon!”

“BlackColtmon, Digivolve to,” he became a large, black, male horse with heavy-looking, oversized hooves, “BlackStaliamon!”

“Mechmon, Digivolve to,” he grew into a ten-foot-tall blue and chrome Gundam-like robot with tazer guns for hands, “Mechamon!”

“Chickomon, Digivolve to,” he grew into a massive, full-sized brontosaurus with broad, strong phoenix wings and a collar of phoenix feathers around his long neck, just a few feet below his head, “BrauntoPhoenixmon!”

“Ponymon, Digivolve to,” she became a beautiful brown horse with glistening fur, shining, metallic-looking hooves, and angelic, white-feathered wings, “Fillimon!”

“Get ready,” I said, holding my sword at the ready. “They’re coming.”

Almost as soon as I’d spoken, the three Bakemon flew out of one of the alleyways, their claws slashing wildly. Mechamon and Dragonterramon acted quickly, managing to repel the assault. The Bakemon circled around and disappeared into a different alleyway. They swung back around, executing another pass, but they were repelled yet again. They did so again and again, until finally I looked up and cried, “Enough! Show yourself!”

“Sorry,” came a voice, “but my master can’t allow himself to be bothered by the likes of you.”

I looked up into the eyes of the descending vampire, “He already allowed himself to be bothered, Myotismon. After all, he’s the one who sealed our ability to Digivolve.”

“Ah,” said Myotismon, “details.” He waved his hand, calling, “Crimson Lightning!” A wave of red light flew at me, but I dispersed it with my sword.

I shot into the air, past Myotismon. He turned to attack me again, but he found himself cut off by an intense flame and a bolt of blue lightning. He turned and found himself face to face with Dragonterramon, Mechamon and BlackStaliamon.

“Your opponents,” Dragonterramon declared, “are us!”

I flew strait up, skimming the side of the building, circling around to the other side so that when I came up over the edge, my target’s back was to me. I planned to strike with minimal force, knocking him out without hurting him too badly. He was Human. Digimon get reborn. Humans don’t.

But before I could strike, the figure spoke, “You’ll have to do better than that if you want to sneak up on me.” He turned around, facing me. His face was even darker and more wicked than I remembered. His evil eyes were sharp. They flashed with intelligence.

“Call off your Digimon,” I commanded. My foe laughed. I took the opportunity to attack. I swung my sword, slinging a rolling wave of heat from the blade. My opponent opened his previously clenched left fist, and a ribbon-like talisman fell from within his sleeve, tied around his fingers. Symbols on the talisman glowed purple, and he whipped it at my attack, canceling it out.

“Come on,” my opponent said. “You can’t defeat me with non-lethal attacks. If you want to beat me, you’ll have to be willing to kill me.”

“Then I will,” I said, making up my mind then and there. “You’re pure evil, and if killing you is what it takes to end this, so be it.”

I raised my sword above my head. It glowed with a bright, yellow-white light. I swung my sword, releasing that light. It flew forward, tearing a trench through the roof below us. The light poured toward my opponent, but he raised his talisman at the last second, summoning up a barrier that survived just long enough to absorb the blow.

I summoned and slung light blade after light blade in rapid succession, swinging my sword wildly. My foe slashed with his talisman, matching my speed, deflecting every strike.

After several minutes, I had to stop and sheath my sword. The weight of my blade had torn my wound open again, and I was losing blood. Multiple explosions had filled the air with smoke, and I assumed that I would remain obscured long enough to forge a plan, but I had no such luck. There was a purple flash, and the smoke cleared instantly. Half a second later, my foe was in my face, swinging his talisman, prepared to strike a lethal blow. I dropped my shield and grabbed my sword with my left hand, drawing it just in time to deflect the enemy’s attack. I jumped back, out of his reach. It wasn’t much, but it was the best I could do.

My opponent laughed and turned to face me, twirling his talisman like a ribbon. He walked slowly toward me, and he began to whistle.

Wow, I thought, this guy’s more messed up that I thought.

Back in the street below, Dragonterramon, Mechamon and BlackStaliamon were fighting Myotismon, while BrauntoPhoenixmon and Fillimon were busy fighting the Bakemon. BlackStaliamon and Dragonterramon ran interference while Mechamon counterattacked against the Vampiric enemy. They were holding there own, but they were also taking more damage than they were dealing. Meanwhile, the Bakemon were managing to avoid their enemies’ attacks, using their speed and unpredictability to make up for their lack of power.

“We have to end this,” said BrauntoPhoenixmon. “We have to help the others. They’re wearing down. They won’t last!”

“I know,” said Fillimon, launching a beam from her hooves, missing a Bakemon by mere inches, “but I just can’t seem to hit these things!”

Things seemed bleak, until something miraculous happened. A lightning quick blue blur, seeming to appear out of nowhere, struck the three Bakemon before they could even hope to react. They were left hanging in the air, stunned. BrauntoPhoenixmon took the opportunity to release a wave of fire, incinerating them all at once. The blue blur slowed, and its identity became clear. It was Gaomon.

“Looks like we got here just in time,” came a voice. Jeremy, Amanda and Sarah turned to see Zald and Carmensita standing there behind them. Carmensita was holding her Digitama, her Digimon, the Dorumon named Maria, standing by her side.

“Zald,” Jeremy said, “you came.”

“Yeah,” Zald answered. “Thank Carmensita. She’s the one who reminded me that it’s important to fight for others.”

Carmensita smiled and blushed.

“Come on Carmen,” said Zald, “let’s get in on this.” Zald and Carmensita held up identical teal-colored Digivices. The Digivices activated, and Maria and Gaomon were encased in light.

“Gaomon, Digivolve to,” he grew into a massive, blue-furred husky with red gloves over his front paws, claws protruding from them. He wore a sort of red scarf around his neck. The scarf was animated, its ends acting like hands, “Gaogamon!”

“Dorumon, Digivolve to,” Maria grew larger until she was just under Gaogamon’s size, with wicked claws and full-sized black wings, “Dorugamon!”

The two new Digimon charged. Gaogamon stopped firmly in front of Myotismon and called, “Spiral Blow!” A tornado burst from Gaogamon’s mouth. Myotismon was thrown off guard. He threw his arms up just in time to deflect the brunt of the attack, but giving the other Digimon time to get into position. As soon as Myotismon lowered his arms, Mechamon was in his face, hitting him with an electrically charged uppercut, throwing him into the air, where he was hit by Dragonterramon’s Terra Flame and BrauntoPhoenixmon’s Dino Fire, followed by Fillimon’s Filli Beams. Myotismon was busy trying to recover, when Maria called, “Cannon Balls!” She fired a barrage of steel balls from her mouth, hammering the foe in the chest. He fell heavily to the ground.

Meanwhile, my battle with my opponent resumed. I managed to push him back. “You can’t defeat me,” I said. “I have the forces of light and justice on my side.”

“Light and justice mean nothing to me,” my foe cried. “I am Draven Gastrovich, sorcerer and Digimon Tamer. Nothing can stop me!”

He attacked wildly. I was caught off guard. There was no way for me to defend. But just before Draven’s attack hit, I heard the roof access door swing open and a gun go off. Draven stopped cold, his eyes wide. He clutched his abdomen, blood running through his fingers. I turned to see Officer Thompson standing near the open roof access door, his gun still raised, and the barrel still smoking. I turned back toward Draven, just in time to see him stumble backwards and fall over the roof edge. Thompson and I ran to the roof and watched as Draven fell toward the ground, and his apparent demise.

[spoiler=Chapter Four]

Destiny

Even as Draven fell, his last Digimon, the battered Myotismon, rose to his feet. He saw his plummeting master and rose into the air, moving to catch him. But as soon as Myotismon grew close, Draven grabbed the Digimon’s face, his talisman alight.

“I’m dying,” Draven cried. “I save myself by taking your body for my own!”

“No!” Myotismon cried, terror in his voice. A moment later, his eyes went blank. There was a bright purple flash. When it faded, Myotismon and Draven as we knew them were gone, replaced by a massive, mysterious figure with Myotismon’s head, a white body with huge arms, ending in clawed hands, a long, whip-like tail, bulbous shoulders, each with a large mouth in it, facing forward, and massive, mechanical-looking purple wings on his back, reminiscent of a jet pack, or a pair of robotic wings from a movie. He hung in the air, looking himself over, and then he began to laugh hysterically.

“This is perfect,” the figure stated. “I’ve become more powerful than I ever could have imagined!”

“What is that thing?” Jeremy demanded. As he spoke, I set Thomson on the ground, and then dropped to the ground beside them. I held up my Digicomp handheld and scanned the figure. I read the results and said, “The closest match that the Digimon Analyzer can find is to a Digimon called MaloMyotismon, but there’s something different. Some additional source of power deep within it.”

“Did Myotismon absorb the Digidestined and Digivolve?” Sarah asked, remaining weary of the looming, mostly immobile figure.

“No,” I said. “Draven, the Digidestined, had powers of his own. I think he absorbed Myotismon and turned into this.”

“We have to stop this guy,” said Zald, Carmensita standing at his side.

I looked Zald in the eyes and said, “Good to see you.”

Zald nodded, “Likewise.”

Draven laughed again, waving his arms wildly, crushing the building upon which he and I had just fought.

“It’s time I finished what I started,” Draven stated. “Fellow Digimon Tamers, you die now!”

The mouths in Draven’s shoulders opened, and a large black energy orb appeared in each of these living cannons. Draven called out, “Screaming Darkness!” The orbs fired.

“Everyone,” I cried, “get out of the way!”

Everyone, human and Digimon alike, scattered. Zald grabbed Carmensita, pulling her along at his side. She was jolted and dropped her Digitama. It fell, directly in the path of the oncoming attack. No one noticed, except for Thompson. As the rest of us moved frantically to avoid the massive oncoming attack, Thompson turned around and ran back to the Digitama. It was too late to avoid the attack, so he crouched down, cradling the egg, doing everything he could to protect it.

The attack hit. The shockwave from the impact was enough to knock everyone over, save the larger Digimon. There was a massive explosion that billowed up into the air and then fell back in on itself before dissipating. In the midst of the fire and the smoldering, smoking asphalt there was a light. Inside that light stood Thompson, completely unharmed. Next to his stood three triplet Digimon. They were shaped like small Dinosaurs or large lizards, but their bodies were made up of colorful building blocks. One was colored more red and yellow. The others were colored more blue and green and more green and red.

In Thompson’s hand was a red, green, blue and yellow Digivice. I couldn’t help but smile. Thompson looked down at his three Digimon, and he smiled as well. The three Digimon nodded. Thompson held up his Digivice and called, “Initiate Digivolution!”

The three Digimon were encased in light.

“ToyAgumon,” the Digimon called, “Digivolve to!”

The yellow and red ToyAgumon became a bizarre creature with a body made of a revolver barrel, with a revolver in each hand, wearing a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, and a bandanna scarf, “Deputymon!”

The green and blue ToyAgumon became an even stranger creature. It had no body or head that I could recognize. Instead it had a body shaped like a white star with a face in the upper half. It was wearing a yellow scarf, and blue gloves and boots. The green and red ToyAgumon became a mostly identical creature, with red gloves and boots and a brown scarf. They declared in unison, “Starmon!”

Thompson drew his weapon and took aim, and he and Deputymon opened fire. Draven raised one hand, raising a barrier that deflected the attacks. Meanwhile the two Starmon jumped into the air above Draven and summoned a barrage of star-shaped energy bolts that rained down toward Draven’s head. He raised his other hand, summoning a second barrier that blocked this attack as well.

While Thompson and the Starmon continued their combined assault, Deputymon jumped up, level with Draven’s head and summoned energy into the gun barrel that made up his body. He fired, aiming right for Draven’s exposed face. Even a hit from an Adult Level Digimon would do damage to him if it hit him in the face at such close range. But Draven was more powerful than a regular Digimon. He summoned a purple aura around is body and cried out. The aura expanded out, canceling out the attacks and throwing Thompson and his Digimon through the air. They fell hard onto their backs and struggled to rise.

“Take him out!” I commanded. My team’s Digimon along with Gaogamon and Dorugamon charged forward, launching their attacks. Draven released a think red fog from his shoulders that ate the attacks up. Dragonterramon and BlackStaliamon jumped at the foe, but Draven swatted them out of the air. BrauntoPhoenixmon flew strait at Draven like a flying battering ram, but Draven summoned up a barrier that stopped the massive dinosaur’s advance, throwing him to the ground.

“This is pointless,” I said. “We can’t beat him at the Adult Level, and we can’t Digivolve further, thanks to Draven’s spell.”

Then it hit me. I turned to Zald and Carmensita and said, “We can’t Digivolve, but you can! Draven’s spell didn’t affect you. You have to find a way to Digivolve to a higher level!”

“I don’t know how-,” Zald began, but he was cut off.

“No more talk,” Draven cried. “It’s time for you to hurry up and die! Crimson Mist!”

The red fog poured from his shoulders again, spreading over the Digimon. When it faded, they had all returned to their Child forms.

“John’s right, Zald,” said Gaomon, the first of the Digimon to rise to his feet.

“We’re the only ones who can do it, Carmensita,” said Maria, finding her footing as well.

Zald looked thoughtful. Then he looked up at Draven’s monstrous form and said, “If we’re the only ones who can beast him, that’s what we’ll do.” He looked down at his sister, “Right, Carmen?”

Carmensita smiled, “Yeah!”

Around their necks appeared golden tags on thin chains. In each tag was a Crest. I didn’t recognize the symbols they bore.

The Crests glowed, and before Draven could react, energy poured from them into Maria and Gaomon.

Zald and Carmensita raised their Digivices. The simple teal devices became translucent. Zald’s turned a rich dark blue, and Carmensita’s turned bright violet purple. Their Digimon rose into the air, and they began to change.

“Gaomon, Warp Digivolve to!” He became a twenty-foot-tall blue-armored knight with a canine face, a chest plate shaped like a canine face, and a huge metal claw over each hand. His armor was ornately decorated, and his red cape fluttered in the wind, “MirageGaogamon!”

“Dorumon, Warp Digivolve to!” Maria became a fifteen-foot-tall armored dragon with a tail ending in a blade, huge, blade-like dark blue wings, dark blue and silver armor, bladed arms, and a fierce face. She had a clearly feminine build, even though the Analyzer said that most Digimon of her type were male, “Dorugoramon!”

“What is this?” Draven demanded, but for an answer, MirageGaogamon seemed to flickered out, moving at the speed of sound, and slashed Draven across the chest. Draven cried out in pain, and swiped at MirageGaogamon with his claws, but he missed as MirageGaogamon seemed to disappear yet again. MirageGaogamon danced around his foe like an illusion, slashing again and again with his claws before finally dancing away.

Maria spread her wings, and her hands grew alight with fire. She clapped her hands together and called, “Blade Storm!” She flapped her wings, releasing a swirling of small, feather-sized blades that tore at Draven’s flesh.

“You can’t kill me with such weak attacks,” said Draven, laughing.

“Then it’s a good thing,” said MirageGaogamon, “that we’re far from finished.”

Maria raised her hands over her head, summoning a mighty, fierce and wicked-looking sword. MirageGaogamon’s chest armor expanded, sliding open slightly. Inside a gap in the center of his chest plate appeared a pool of red light.

“Doru Djinn!” called Maria, swinging her sword, unleashing a wave of fire.

“Lunar Cannon!” called MirageGaogamon, discharging the energy from his chest in a thick, wide yellow-white beam.

Draven raised his hands, summoning both barriers, one behind the other. But the attacks too much. They sailed strait through. Draven was hit, the attacks bursting through his chest.

Draven was stunned. “No,” he said, “I’m Draven Gastrovich. I can’t lose!”

“Sorry Draven,” I said, “but it looks like you just did.”

Draven broke apart, becoming bits of data, his screams echoing throughout the city.

MirageGaogamon and Maria de-Digivolved. Zald and Carmensita’s Crests disappeared after the battle, making unlikely that the two Digimon would ever reach Ultimate Level again. Zald’s company decided that the Cincinnati area was too dangerous and it pulled out, cutting its losses. Zald and Carmen went with it.

We never saw them again, but we would never forget their role in the fight. We would forever be thankful that they had risked their lives to save us.

this is a message for all of my faithful readers. you know my writing style. you know me. those of you have read my Yu-Gi-Oh! fics know that i can write strategy. those of you who have read my Digimon fic know that i'm pretty good at writing action too. so i'm asking you, my readers, what would you like to see? what type of story would you like to see me write next (no specific animes, please. I want this one to be original)?

for some possible choices, think anime types/genres.

temporary suspension of hiatus! a new chapter will be up within the next few hours. more than one chapter if i can help it!

finally, after a long, loooooooong wait, the main storyline of Digimon ND resumes! i've come close to completing the first eleven chapters of book three in my spare time. so, without further delay, here are this first two chapters of Digimon ND3; ShadowEmpressmon's Evil Game!

[spoiler=Chapter 1]

Return to the Digital World

It had been nearly six months since my friends and I had returned to Earth with our Digimon. Nearly six months since our final battle with Tyranterramon in is winged form. I was walking home one evening, Serpentmon hanging around my neck. We were near a strip mall, so there were several people around. People were staring, but I didn’t care. Serpentmon and I were talking quietly, when something weird happened, even by my standards.

I heard a strange crackling sound and looked up at the sky. There was a vortex opening, lightning lancing from within it in all directions.

“Serpentmon,” I said.

“Gotcha!” he replied, jumping down as people all around us ran for cover.

Suddenly, out of the vortex emerged a huge, gray, metal-winged dragon with pointed claw/hands. He was severely injured. Behind him flew a familiar form; Garudamon, except that her feathers were pale, and her eyes glowed red.

I pulled my pocket Digicomp out and scanned the two Digimon. The dragon was Gigadramon, an Android Digimon. The other Digimon was definitely a Garudamon, but her fractal code was severely and irreversibly corrupted.

“Garudamon’s being controlled somehow!” I said. “I don’t know about the other one, except that he’s called Gigadramon, a Perfect Level.”

“So two Perfects?” Serpentmon asked. “This could get interesting!”

“Let’s see just how interesting, shall we?”

As the two Digimon grew closer, I passed my hand over my Crest Tags. The Neo Crest of Courage emerged, and I took it into my hand, plugging it into my Digiplayer, “Initiate Direct Digivolution!”

The small black snake grew into a large black dragon with flaming orange wings, “Serpentmon, Direct Digivolve to! WingedDragonterramon!”

“Alright,” I said, “let’s show them what we’ve got. Armor of the Courageous Soldier!”

I reached down to my waist with my right hand to where the hilt of a sword might be, and suddenly I was wearing golden armor, carrying a shield, and gripping the hilt of a sword. I drew my sword, dropping my shield, and jumping onto it, using it as a hover board, and shot into the air, my Digimon at my side.

“I’m thinkin’ that Garudamon should be our target,” I said to my friend.

“I agree,” he said, and called, “Terra Flame!” Fire shot from his mouth, past Gigadramon, and nailed the foe in the chest, forcing her to stop in midair.

“Finishing moves!” I commanded. I swung my sword, slinging flames at the giant bird.

“Winged Fireblaze!” called WingedDragonterramon. He threw two large fireballs using his wings. The two flame attacks hit, engulfing Garudamon’s body in fire. She became a cloud of data and a strand of fractal code.

I aimed my Digiplayer’s input slot at the strand of fractal code. The code was copied and the duplicate data coalesced into a chip which I caught and placed in my pocket.

I looked around for Gigadramon, noting that the rift was closed, and found him lying on the ground below.

I swooped down and landed to one side of the large gray dragon. WingedDragonterramon landed on the other side of him. From there we made our way up to the strange Digimon’s head.

“You okay big guy?” I asked.

“Yes” said Gigadramon, his voice like audio from a bad set of speakers. Slowly he raised his torso up off of the ground and spread his metal wings. “Now quickly, Digidestined, you must gather your team and come with me to the Digital World. We are at war!”

It was an hour before my team was together. Jeremy had taken awhile to arrive, air Mechamon. Once we were together in a semi-secluded area in the clearing of a nearby woods, we listened as Gigadramon told his story.

“I’m strong, but I was never much of a fighter, so Machinedramon put me in charge of the construction yards in the complex beneath machine citadel. However, once he was gone, I stepped up to help by leading our people until the remnants of Machinedramon’s data could be recovered and placed into a blank Hagurumon body. It was about three weeks ago when we finally found him. We placed the data into the Hagurumon, and it immediately Digivolved into Machinedramon’s Perfect form, Andromon.

“I told Andromon that I would like to help until his forces could be fully restored, so he made me a temporary general. And then, just yesterday, we were attacked.”

Gigadramon paused and looked toward the ground. With a sigh he continued, “The attack happened from within the citadel. More than half of the population and nearly as much of the military suddenly became corrupted beyond repair and began attacking the remainder of the citadel’s occupants. Andromon gathered his remaining forces in defense of the citadel, even though he knew it would be futile in the long run. Someone powerful was controlling our allies, and if they showed up, we probably wouldn’t survive.

“We were forced to abandon the city, but as soon as we did we were ambushed by Bird, Rock, Dinosaur, and Fire-type Digimon from the mountains, Amphibian and Sea Animal-type Digimon from the river, and Reptile, Animal, Beast, Plant, Insectoid, and Serpent-type Digimon from the desert and surrounding forest. We were outnumbered.

“Andromon, thinking fast, focused a great deal of his own energy into opening a rift. I flew through the rift to find you, but Garudamon followed, bombarding me with her attacks. I wouldn’t have survived if you hadn’t saved me.”

“So Digimon from everywhere are being controlled at the same time?” asked my tall, dark haired cousin, Jen. “What can do that?

“Not just controlled,” said Jeremy, an old friend of mine, “corrupted. Even Manipulamon couldn’t corrupt a Digimon’s data completely.”

“We have to get back there now,” I said. I raised my Digivice to the sky. “Digiport open!”

A beam shot from the Digivice screen, building in the air above the trees. There was a flash, and a vortex opened. I looked back at my team. They nodded.

“Initiate, Digivolution!” said Jeremy, Sarah, Amanda, and Jen.

“Mechmon, Digivolve to!” The small metallic monkey grew into a ten-foot-tall battle mech, “Mechamon!”

“Ponymon, Digivolve to!” the young pony grew into a beautiful full grown horse with shining feathered wings, “Fillimon!”

“Chickomon, Digivolve to!” the small long-necked dinosaur grew into a massive Brontosaurus with long phoenix wings and a ring of feathers around his neck, “BrauntoPhoenixmon!”

“Coltmon, Digivolve to!” the young colt grew into a full grown stallion with bladed horseshoes, an armored saddle, and broad, powerful wings, “BattleStaliamon!”

The small robotic dog Technopupmon jumped into Jen’s sister Kristin’s arms, and BrauntoPhoenixmon lifted Kris, as well as his human partner, my cousin Amanda onto his back. Jen, my sister Sarah and I jumped onto the backs of BattleStaliamon, Fillimon, and WingedDragonterramon, our partner Digimon, the small black-furred colt Digimon BlackColtmon joining me, and Jeremy allowed his partner Mechamon to carry him on his shoulder. Moments later, with Gigadramon at our side, we were off, through the portal and back to the Digital world.

[spoiler=Chapter 2]

Appearance of the Emperor Digimon

We arrived almost immediately in the Digital World, just outside the territory around Machine Citadel. We were in the northern forest near the river and close to the mountain and volcano regions. The area was a war zone, littered with toppled or splintered trees, craters, scorched earth, and the scrapped remains of countless Machine Digimon. There was no one in sight.

“Gigadramon,” I said, “this is awful!”

“Yes,” Our new friend replied, sadness in his voice.

“We have to find whoever did this and make them pay!” said Sarah, a fire in her eyes.

“And Andromon had no idea who could have corrupted the Digimon?” Jeremy asked.

“No,” Gigadramon answered, “none of us did.”

“Alright guys,” I said, “split up. I want each team searching a different area of the forest for survivors.” At my command, my team split into groups, moving with a purpose.

Jeremy

Mechamon and I walked for a few minutes, moving into the woods. After several more minutes of searching, we heard a sound. Something big was moving our way. It was already getting dark, and the thick trees made it darker still, so it was difficult to see anything that was more than a few feet away.

Suddenly, two huge eyes lit up in a space between several treetops. Then I saw him, a huge metallic gray mechanical dragon Digimon. He looked like our old ally Machinedramon, except that he was larger with larger, sleeker cannons, large sword like claws, and a golden metal semi-circular crown on his head. His cannons lit up and he fired. Mechamon barely lifted me away in time.

Sarah

I waked deeper into the woods, Fillimon at my side. It wasn’t long before we were jumped by a tall, feminine Digimon wearing a brown dress with leaves sewn into it. She wore a flower crown, and she had translucent wings hanging from her back like a cape. She waved her hand and thick, thorny vines sprouted from the ground, springing toward my Digimon and myself.

Jen

I rode BattleStaliamon into the forest. In about six minutes we were forced to dodge what appeared to be a missile made of air. We turned to face the source of the attack and found ourselves facing a tall woman with broad red wings, a bird head mask, and a crown on her head, wearing a dress of red cloth from the waste up, and long eagle feathers from the waste down. Her hands and lower legs were like bird legs with sharp talons. She raised her talon hand and fired her attack again.

Amanda

Kristin and I were attacked in the woods by two strange Digimon. One was a huge dinosaur-like creature with huge fists. His entire body was made of rock, with a circular arrangement of pointy rocks on his head that looked like a crown. The other’s skin was made of patchy dried magma. He wore red armor over his chest, arms, and legs, and he had a crown of fire burning atop his samurai helmet.

“TechnoPupmon,” said Kristin, “I think you should Digivolve!”

John

A short distance into the forest, my Digimon and I were attacked by tall, blue-skinned humanoid Digimon with long white hair wearing armor made of crystal, carrying an unbreakable diamond sword, with a crystal crown on his head. He was accompanied by another humanoid figure wearing blue and yellow armor, a helmet and visor, carrying a whip and a shield, wearing a golden band on the top of his helmet. Electricity crackled along his entire body. WingedDragonterramon had downgraded to his Child form, leaving us momentarily defenseless.

“Alright guys,” I said, “I think its time for work. Initiate Digivolution!” My Digivice vibrated, and the screen glowed.

“Serpentmon, Digivolve to!”

“BlackColtmon, Digivolve to!”

Serpentmon grew into his Adult form, a large black wingless dragon, and BlackColtmon grew into a full grown stallion with black fur and oversized hooves.

“Dragonterramon!”

“BlackStaliamon!”

I summoned my armor, drew my sword, and jumped onto my shield, sliding toward the foes. They jumped back and attacked.

The icy Digimon called out, “Ice Javelin!” A spear made of ice appeared in the Digimon’s free hand. He threw it at me, forcing me to swing around and reverse direction to dodge.

“Crackling Whip!” called the electric Digimon. He cracked his whip, which grew longer and caught me in the back, sending me sprawling on the ground, my face in the dirt.

“John!” cried Dragonterramon. He moved to rush the foe.

“No,” I said, rising to my feet, “fall back and regroup in the clearing.”

Dragonterramon ran past me. I jumped onto his back, one foot on his tail. He carried me back to the clearing where the battle had taken place, BlackStaliamon running at his side. The two Digimon followed. We reached the clearing and found the others fighting there own opponents. The human members of our team backed up into a circle, our Digimon forming a ring around us to protect us from the new threat.

“These guys are strong,” I said. “We should go Ultimate now, while we have a chance.”

My team and I connected our Digivices and Digiplayers and inserted our Neo Crests, “Initiate Warp Digivolution!”

“Dragonterramon…”

“BlackStaliamon…”

“BattleStaliamon…”

“Fillimon…”

“Mechamon…”

“TechnoGarurumon…”

“BrauntoPhoenixmon…”

“…Warp Digivolve to!”

Dragonterramon grew into a WingedDragonterramon with metal wings, a robotic right eye, a mechanical fireball-launching left arm with disk-shaped shield, robotic legs, and a black laser rifle in his right talon, “MetalDragonterramon!”

BlackStaliamon morphed into a featureless human figure, black as a shadow. Blue armor with red trim appeared and attached to his body. A knight’s helm appeared on his head, a sword at his waist, and a red cape appeared, hanging from under the armor on his shoulders, “Knighthramon!”

BattleStaliamon became a mechanical angel with shoulder length blond hair, a powerful katana-like sword, an iron shield, and a glass faceplate over his masked face. The mask bore an image of a cross, and no eye holes, “MechAngemon!”

Fillimon became a mechanical female angel with broad feathered wings, long blond hair, a round shield, a crossbow over her right hand, and a mask just like her male counterpart’s, “TechAngewomon!”

Mechamon grew into a larger mech with a cannon on one shoulder, a missile launcher on the other shoulder, panels in his chest, flip back laser guns on his arms, and rockets and fan-like wings on his back, “Decimatormon!”

The large mechanical striped wolf, TechnoGarurumon grew into a cybernetic man with a Garurumon-skin cloak, metallic claws, and a hump on his back that was really a missile launcher concealed beneath his cloak, “CyberGarurumon!”

BrauntoPhoenixmon changed into a humanoid brontosaur standing fifteen feet tall with steel armor over his chest, red wings, and metallic hands with missile launchers in his four fingers, each able to support one large missile at a time, “MagnaBrauntomon!”

The Digimon split up and returned to battling their original opponents. I led the other humans away, just as a cataclysmic battle broke out. Decimatormon rushed the metal dragon, who began to charge his cannons. Decimatormon raised his arms and flipped his arm-mounted guns into armed position and fired, just as the other Digimon fired his cannons. The attacks cancelled each other out. Before Decimatormon could form another attack, the much larger opponent called out “Giga Scrambler!” and fired off his cannons, catching Decimatormon in his chest.

Meanwhile, TechAngewomon fired an arrow at the sprite-like enemy with the flower crown. The foe lifted one hand, and a thick grouping of vines rose up, hitting and detonating the arrow. The vines were incinerated, but they were immediately replaced by more vines, catching TechAngewomon in their grasp.

MechAngemon rose up. His enemy, the winged woman, followed, outrunning him and out flying him. He slashed with his sword, but she pulled up and back, raised her talon hands, and fired a blast of compressed air right into her enemies face.

The huge rocky Digimon punched. MagnaBrauntomon caught the much larger Digimon’s fist with his left hand, and swung an uppercut at his foe’s jaw, sending him flying trough the air, sailing through several trees. MagnaBrauntomon aimed his hands and fired his finger missiles, the Braunto Blaster attack, scoring a direct hit.

Nearby, CyberGarurumon leapt up, dodging his flaming foe’s fire attack, a whip made of flames. He removed his sash and let his cloak flutter free, revealing his back-mounted missile launchers. He fired his missiles, but the foe jumped backward to dodge. While the foe hung in the air, CyberGarurumon raised his right palm and aimed it at the opponent, firing a beam attack. The beam caught the foe in the chest, throwing him hard to the ground.

MetalDragonterramon fired his laser beam at his electrical foe, but the enemy moved like lightning and dodged it completely. He shot at MetalDragonterramon and kicked. The cybernetic dragon barely managed to raise his shield in time. Then, while the opponent was still right in front of the shield, MetalDragonterramon fired his fireball attack, hitting the opponent full force at point blank range.

Knighthramon slashed, but his opponent, the icy Digimon, raised his crystal sword to block. He parried Knighthramon’s blade and stabbed, catching Knighthramon in the abdomen. Ice grew out from the impact point, wrapping and encasing Knighthramon’s neck, upper arms, upper legs, and torso. Knighthramon fell onto his back, immobile.

Decimatormon recovered from his foes attack and rocketed into the air. He fired a spread of missiles, all of which hit their mark. TechAngewomon broke free of the vines and fired three more arrows. The wood Digimon dodged two, but the third hit her shoulder, dealing her some severe damage. MechAngemon raised his shield just in time to block the burst of air, deflecting it back. This managed to catch the foe off guard, distracting her long enough for MechAngemon to slide back and call out, “Celestial-Tech Sword!” A wave of energy burst from his blade and hit the opponent, throwing her to the ground. MetalDragonterramon used his fire breath to melt the ice holding is ally in place, helped him up, and fired a beam that hit the electrical foe square in the chest. All seven Digimon opponents were down, but they weren’t out. They recovered, sporting only moderate sustained damage.

“We can’t win against these guys the way we are,” said Jeremy, reading the strength of the opponents on the screen of his Digicalculator. “Each enemy is roughly as strong as any one of our Digimon at their Ultimate level, but with greater speed or strength, depending on his or her size.”

“I guess we’ll have to put our best foot forward then,” I said, “and show these guys exactly who they’re dealing with!”

[spoiler=Chapter 3]

Their Master Arrives; Battle ShadowEmpressmon!

I raised my connected Digivice and Digiplayer, inserted my two Neo Crests, and said, “Initiate, D.N.A. Digivolution!”

My two Digimon partners rose into the air, glowing brightly.

“MetalDragonterramon…”

“Knighthramon…”

“…D.N.A. Digivolve to!” The two Digimon merged into a tall humanoid warrior, Decimatormon’s height, with dragon wings, a dragon tail, a brown and black helm with three backswept spikes, and black and brown leather armor with the Crest of Courage on the right side of his chest, and the Crest of Friendship on the left side of his chest. He wore shoulder pads that also bore his Crests. Over his right hand, attached to his armor by a black metallic ring was a long sword, and attached to his left hand by a blue metallic ring was a cannon, ringed by three robotic claws, “InfernoKnightmon!”

All around me, the other Digimon reverted to their Child forms. Their Human partners each plugged their crests and Emperor Digichips into their Digiplayers. I inserted my Millenniummon Digichip into my Digiplayer, and along with my team called, “Upload Ancient Code!”

Data from the Crests and Digichips poured into my Digimon’s matrix. He rose higher into the air and crossed his arms. His weapons disappeared, and his wings and tail gave way to a cape, and his leather armor become golden metallic armor, ornately decorated. He held his arms out and a sword appeared in his right hand, and a shield appeared in his left hand. He lowered his arms and slid forward toward his seven opponents, “Protectormon!”

Without hesitation, the seven enemies launched their attacks at Protectormon. He crossed his arms and was surrounded by a spherical barrier that nullified all seven attacks. He collapsed the barrier and swung his sword horizontally, hitting all seven enemies at once, throwing them back. Then he raised his sword and slashed vertically, seven energy blades burst forth, running across the ground, one aimed at each foe.

“Don’t think I’ll let you beat my minions so easily!” cried a female voice. Suddenly, a huge claw shot across the ground, absorbing Protectormon’s attack. The claw raised up and shot toward Protectormon.

“Block it!” I cried. Anything strong enough to absorb Protectormon’s attack and keep coming was strong enough to deal some serious damage. Protectormon raised his shield, holding the attack at bay. He raised his sword and slashed through the claw, dispersing it.

“Where did that attack come from?” Jen asked, backing up several steps.

“I can’t tell,” I answered, looking up from my Digicomp screen. “There’s some kind of energy shroud disrupting my scanner.”

“I’ll find her,” said Protectormon. He raised his barrier again and expanded it. It hit a figure in the air just higher than him and to his right. She had been using the shadows to hide herself.

“Oh God!” I said. “Do you see that?!”

“She looks like Protectormon,” said Jen, shocked.

And indeed she did. The enemy that had appeared before us was a tall elegant Digimon. She wore black armor decorated with silver patterns identical to the patterns on Protectormon’s armor. Her left arm was wreathed in darkness, forming a claw. She wore an ornate armor mask, and a flowing black sash as a cape. The armor on her right arm continued into a short triangular blade.

“My name,” said the figure, “is ShadowEmpressmon. I am Protectormon’s sister, and his superior.”

“Sister?” Sarah said.

“Protectormon?” I asked.

“No clue,” he replied, standing at the ready. He raised his blade to point at ShadowEmpressmon and demanded, “Explain yourself!”

“Simple,” ShadowEmpressmon answered. “You knew that a new set of Guardians was being born here in this world. You set it in motion yourself. This world’s needs decided the form that those guardians would take. One of them, the Guardian of Guardians, was templated using the form of the Great Guardian as a base. I am the result of that process.”

“But them why are you fighting us?” Jen asked, sorrow in her voice.

“While my matrix was still forming, I was intermingled with a vast amount of negative data, giving me and my new minions the power of corruption, and a more profitable set of goals.”

“Profitable or not,” Protectormon boomed, “your new goals dishonor your true purpose. I will show you your error.”

“Just try!”

By now the other seven enemy Digimon had risen to their feet, ready to join the battle, but ShadowEmpressmon raised her hand signaling to them to back off. They did. She then raised her shadowy claw and sprung toward her foe. Protectormon raised his shield to block the claw, and it was shattered by the impact. He managed to avoid the attack by the skin of his teeth by sliding abruptly to the side. He carried the slide further and spun, bringing his sword down, but his foe rolled and shifted backward, dodging the blade. The two Digimon drifted further apart.

Protectormon raised his blade and called, “Blade of the Saver!” Energy built in his blade, extending outward toward the foe.

“Darkness Claw!” called ShadowEmpressmon. Her claw extended to meet the energy blade.

The two powerful attacks met in a rupturing burst of light and darkness, intermingling and exploding with enough force to knock me and my team over onto our backs. As I rose, the explosion faded revealing both Digimon, still at peak condition.

“Protection Sword!” called Protectormon. He swung his sword and several beams of light lanced from it.

“Shadow Tendrils!” called ShadowEmpressmon. The fingers of her Shadow Claw lanced outward, meeting the Protection Sword attack. The attacks cancelled each other out.

Both Digimon shot forward and punched with their left fists. The punches met with a loud BOOM!! Both Digimon fell back, giving themselves a chance to assess the situation.

“We have to turn the tables on this chick!” I said.

“Leave that to us!” said Jen. Behind her stood the rest of my team, both human and Digimon.

“We may not have Crests right now,” said Sarah, “but not all Digivolutions need Crests!”

“Initiate,” said Jeremy, Amanda, and Kristin, “Digivolution!”

“Mechmon, Digivolve to! Mechamon!”

“Chickomon, Digivolve to! BrauntoPhoenixmon!”

“Technopupmon, Digivolve to! TechnoGarurumon!”

The three Child Digimon grew into their Adult forms.

“Our turn,” said Sarah. She and Jen raised their Digivices to the sky and said, “Initiate Bio-Merge Digivolution!”

“Coltmon, Bio-Merge to!” He merged with Jen and grew into a ten-foot-tall Samurai warrior with a katana at each hip, “Samuraimon!”

“Ponymon, Bio-Merge to!” She merged with Sarah and grew into a nine-foot-tall woman in a green dress and a green cloak carrying a staff, “Druidmon!”

Two Ultimate and three Adult Digimon rushed toward the clashing foes, only to be surrounded by the first seven enemies. We were now outnumbered and outgunned.

The electric Digimon, the magma Digimon, and the icy Digimon met Samuraimon and Druidmon, the air Digimon, the vine Digimon, and the metal Digimon met Mechamon and TechnoGarurumon, and the rocky Digimon ran strait at BrauntoPhoenixmon, seeking revenge for his previous injury. The Digimon were definitely in trouble.

“I’m going to help them,” I said, running toward the fray.

“I’ll assist you,” said Gigadramon, flying at my left. He rose up and pushed forward, joining Samuraimon and Druidmon in battle. I curved left and joined Mechamon and TechnoGarurumon in battle. As our battle began, Protectormon’s battle continued overhead, with neither combatant giving an inch.

“Blade of the Saver!” called Protectormon. He extended his blade at his opponent. ShadowEmpressmon slid right, dodging the attack, and returned fire with Shadow Tendrils.

“Such a technique cannot harm me,” said Protectormon. He swung his sword, disrupting and canceling the attack.

Meanwhile, the bird Digimon was exchanging blows with Mechamon, the metal Digimon fought TechnoGarurumon, and I was left to fight the vine Digimon. All three Digimon were powerful. We could barely hold our own.

The bird Digimon fired an air burst at Mechamon. He flew up and over the attack, raising his arms to block his opponent’s thrusting talons. He swung his arms wide and pushed her back, firing his electric bolt attack, but the opponent easily dodged. TechnoGarurumon jumped toward his massive foe and clamped onto him with his teeth, building an overload of his Biotech Laser. Then he fired the attack at point blank range. The backlash sent him flying, and damage to the metal Digimon was minimal at best. The metal Digimon fired his cannons, just as TechnoGarurumon landed hard on his back. TechnoGarurumon managed to roll out of the way just in time to avoid fatal damage.

The wood Digimon commanded a wave of vines to attack me. I incinerated them with the fire from my sword. She summoned more, keeping them coming until my fire was overwhelmed and I was left hacking desperately with my blade. The vines began to tighten around my arms and legs, so I jumped back out of their range, putting my target even further out of my reach.

Samuraimon, Druidmon, and Gigadramon fired their Twin Katana, Life Spell, and Darkside attacks, but all three attacks were avoided with ease, and even though BrauntoPhoenixmon was able to more or less hold his opponent at bay with his flames, we were losing.

I had no choice. I ordered a retreat, and reluctantly we pulled back, Sarah and Ponymon and Jen and Coltmon de-Digivolving, regrouping around the other human members of my team. The enemies regrouped as well.

Well Protectormon, I thought, it looks like it’s up to you.

Well Protectormon, I thought, it looks like it’s up to you.

okay, i admit it. still, imagine how shocked the characters will be when they find out. john will get all pissed and try to punch something that he shouldn't...it'll be all messy and stuff. and junk.

anyway, its kinda the digidestined kids' fault. they just abandoned the digital world. if they'd checked in regularly, they might have saved the new guardians from corruption.

here's chapter four. the bad news just keeps on coming.

[spoiler=Chapter 4]

An Explosion of Power;

Protectormon vs. ShadowEmpressmon!

ShadowEmpressmon released her tendrils. They were met and dispersed by another of Protectormon’s attacks. In the wake of her attack, ShadowEmpressmon rushed in and caught her opponent in her claw. She squeezed, but Protectormon summoned his barrier, forcing the claw open long enough for him to slide out of the claw’s grasp.

“Blade of the Saver!”

“Darkness Claw!”

The attacks met. Enough energy pulsed from the impact point to blow my team and the seven enemy Digimon several feet through the air, save BrauntoPhoenixmon. Above us the two combatants exploded with power, releasing enough energy to shake the ground violently beneath us.

“This is insane!” I cried over the sounds of fighting. “They’ll tear this world apart fighting like this!”

“ShadowEmpressmon doesn’t care,” said Jen, “and Protectormon doesn’t have a choice.”

“I wish we could do something,” Sarah said.

“Yeah,” I replied, “I know what you mean. But as long as ShadowEmpressmon has those seven lackeys to run interference we can’t get in close enough.”

“We’ll just have to leave this one up to Protectormon,” said Jeremy.

“There’s no Digimon I’d trust more to get the job done,” I replied.

As we spoke my team and I watched the battle continue to unfold. Protectormon slashed. ShadowEmpressmon slashed. Sword met claw, creating enough stray energy to tear at the ground beneath us.

“We have to get further away!” Amanda yelled over the of the rumbling ground.

The ground stopped shaking. “Yeah,” I said, “agreed.” Our Digimon reverted to their smaller Child forms, and we ran further from the battle overhead.

Protectormon thrust his sword. ShadowEmpressmon dodged and swiped with her claws. Protectormon pulled back and raised his sword, but ShadowEmpressmon struck again. Protectormon could only raise his sword in time to defend.

“Blade of the Saver!” called Protectormon.

“Darkness Claw!” called ShadowEmpressmon.

The two attacks clashed yet again, producing a shockwave that forced the combatants further apart. ShadowEmpressmon was still at peak condition, but Protectormon seemed to be growing weaker.

“I see that you’ve begun to feel the effects of my Shadow Shroud,” said ShadowEmpressmon. “My Shroud saps the power from the Crests, eventually leaving them in ruins.”

“What?” I demanded from my place several yards away. “You mean that you can destroy our Crests?”

ShadowEmpressmon looked me in the eye and answered, “Yes human, and the effect is cumulative. The more you use your Crests’ powers of Digivolution to reach Perfect level or above, the closer you come to destroying your own Crests. And the more power that the shroud saps from your Crests, the weaker your Digivolutions will become until they can’t use the crests to Digivolve at all anymore and the Crests shatter. Isn’t it beautiful!?”

“John,” said Protectormon, “I’m losing power too fast. I can’t win!”

“You have to try!” I said. “If you can’t beat her we’ll be killed!”

“I’ll have to make this quick then,” he said. “Get as far away from here as you can. I’m going to release all of the power I have left into one final attack!”

“Let’s get out of here,” I said. “Amanda?”

“I’m on it,” she said. “Initiate Digivolution!”

Chickomon became the massive Adult Level Digimon, “Chickomon, Digivolve to! BrauntoPhoenixmon!” BrauntoPhoenixmon and Gigadramon scooped up me and my team and flew us away at high speed. Behind us there was a huge explosion of light. We were thrown out of the air and hit the ground, rolling to a painful stop. BrauntoPhoenixmon de-Digivolved.

“Ouch!” I said, pushing myself up onto my knees.

“You said it,” said Jen, sitting up and rubbing the back of her head.

“But it was worth it,” said Sarah. “An attack like that had to have killed ShadowEmpressmon, right?”

We rose to kneeling or sitting positions and waited for the smoke over the attack’s ground zero to subside. As it began to clear I noticed that a massive crater was formed when the attack went off.

“Look at that power,” said Jeremy. “That crater’s even bigger than the one made by Tyranterramon’s Obliterating Dive-bomb attack!”

“I just hope Protectormon survived,” said Sarah, worry in her voice. “He was pretty weak when he used that attack.”

“We’ll see,” I said, “but I’ll bet he did. He is, after all, the strongest Digimon.”

We watched as the smoke continued to clear, and soon we saw a figure in the air in the center of the cloud.

“He made it!” Jen said, but Jeremy squinted, trying to get a better look.

“No,” he said, “it’s her.”

There, in the air above the crater’s center, was ShadowEmpressmon. Under each arm she carried one of my two unconscious Child Digimon.

“No!” I said, not even trying to hide my fear.

“Impressive,” ShadowEmpressmon said. “Your Digimon nearly managed to discharge enough energy to kill me before the Digivolution failed.”

“Put them down now!” I screamed. My team mates gasped as I rose to my feet with new conviction, my armor’s aura burning brighter than ever before.

“Put them down,” I said again, more forcefully this time, “or you’ll regret it.”

“Don’t worry,” ShadowEmpressmon said mockingly, hovering toward us, “I intend to give you back your pets. In fact, I’ve decided to let all of you live, for now.”

“I don’t mean to seem ungrateful or anything,” Jeremy asked, “but why?”

“Because you amuse me,” she answered. “I’ve decided to give you a chance to fight me again. But first, you must compete for your lives against my minions. Then, if you can beat them, you will be awarded the honor of fighting me again. Of course, you’ll have lost the ability to Digivolve past Adult long before you could possibly reach me, making my game impossible to win.”

She laughed and threw my Digimon down at my feet. I dropped to my knees, threw my shield and sword away, and checked to see if they were breathing. I was relieved to see that they were.

I looked up from my unconscious friends and glared at ShadowEmpressmon. “And what if we refuse to play your game?” I asked.

“I’ll kill you all now,” she answered bluntly.

I was angry and scared. If we fought them we’d lose our Crests, but if we didn’t, we would die and the Digital World would suffer. I didn’t see any choice. I stood up tall and demanded, “Alright ShadowEmpressmon, we’ll play your game. Name your rules.”
