Rise to Greatness

The duelist who is content to be merely `good´ may not be good enough to succeed; those who strive for greatness may crush him in their ascent to power. So duels are being waged, and brave duelists fight and fail. In those times the way of the duelist is this: destroy your opponent, and as they fall, rise to greatness.

[spoiler=Chapter 1]Chapter 1: The Midnight Duel

It was nearly midnight at Duel Academy. The gentle breeze went through the trees that separated the school from the coast. Any one seeing this peaceful scene couldn’t possibly guess the danger that was yet to come.

A boy from Obelisk Blue, named Arnold, came wandering down the hills. He had given up to get a good night sleep and had decided to go out for a walk. He trotted down to a lake at the campus and was whistling merrily to himself when he heard a twig break behind him.

“Uhhm… Hello? Is there anyone there?” he said anxiously, looking around. He saw nothing, so he faced the path ahead of him and startled. Where there only a minute ago were nothing and nobody, there was a man facing him. He had pointy hair and cold electric-blue eyes.

“Wh- who are you?” said Arnold, trying not to show his fear, which was quite hard, as he trembled by the very presence of this man. It was as though there was an aura of dark powers flowing from the man.

“I am who I am. Nothing more, nothing less.” said the man coolly. “I might say my name if you accept my challenge for a duel.” He continued in an almost taunting way. “And why should I duel you” asked Arnold, trying to stay cool. “You don’t have much of a choice really.” Said the mysterious stranger and held out a crystal orb, which Arnold just now realized that he was holding.

Inside the crystal orb there was, to Arnold horror, a young boy, banging his fists against the glass walls of his sparkling prison and shouting. Arnold couldn’t hear what the boy’s voice from behind the glass.

It took a while before he recognized the boy. It was one of his fellow Obelisk Blue students, which disappeared recently from the academy campus.

Arnold shrugged. What would happen if he lost a duel against this man? Did this mysterious man have magical powers? He wondered if there where time to run, but he concluded his feet wouldn’t budge. His whole body seemed to be immobilized by fear. “I wouldn’t try to run if I were you…” the man warned him. His voice was barely more than a whisper, but Arnold heard every word.

“Ok, then. Let’s duel!” Arnold said, as he understood he had no alternative. Their duel disks answered to their voices and flipped out.

Arnold: 4000

???: 4000

“I shall begin” the stranger said, in almost a lazy tone. He added the top card of his deck to his hand, and looked at it with interest. “This card could come in handy later… Let’s see, I summon Diseased Knight in attack mode!” (ATK 1700/DEF 100) A wicked zombie-devil-man-monster with a sword appeared on the field. It's skin was rotten and there were eyeballs on different weird places on it's body. “And I shall conclude my turn with a face-down card.” He watched the hologram version of his card appear on the field face down and looked up at Arnold with a sneer on his face. “What is it? Never seen a monster before? It’s your turn!”

Arnold drew his card and summoned a monster in face-down defense mode. “Ha! Is that the best you can do?” The man laughed. “I end with a face down.” “Then it’s my turn!” The man drew a card. “Now my knight, attack!” The knight flew forwards, raising its sword. Arnold's card flipped up, and revealed “Giant Soldier of Stone. (ATK 1300/DEF 2000) “When my knight attacks, I discard a card from my hand. And then your monster loses ATK and DEF points equal to the level of the discarded monster, times 100! So I discard my level 2 Diseased Phantom to reduce the ATK and DEF of your monster by 200 points!” But instead of going to the graveyard, the monster appeared on the field. (ATK 0/DEF 1000) It raised it's skeletal head to the sky and let an evil cackling escape from fleshless lips.

“But, how?” Asked Arnold. “When my phantom goes to the graveyard from anywhere except my field, it gets summoned to the field, and as long as it remains there, your monsters loses 200 DEF points.” Arnold saw his monster, now having only 1600 DEF, being destroyed and activated his face down card. “I activate Call of the Haunted! Now, I summon my Stone Soldier back to the field.” “Okay, then. One face down card and that’s all for now.”

“Right then! My move.” He drew his card. “I change my Stone Soldier to a defense mode and that’s all for now.” “How boring. I summon Festering Caterpillar in attack mode. (ATK 400/DEF 200) And then I activate Diseased Revolution, so now I trade in my caterpillar for my Diseased Cocoon!”

A giant black cocoon appeared on the field. (ATK 0/DEF 1900) “Any monster that battles with my cocoon loses 200 ATK points, so you will need a monster with over 2100 ATK points to beat it, and in three turns, my cocoon will hatch, and give birth to my Death Squadron Butterfly! I place a card face down as the final move for now.”

“Fine, it’s my turn, so I draw!” Why didn’t he attack? Arnold wondered. “I understand it that you are wondering why I did not attack?” said the stranger. “You see, as long as my cocoon is on the field, none of my monsters can attack, so i simply has to wait for three turns.”

Ok, thought Arnold. Three turns could just give him a strategy capable to defeat this stranger. “I still haven’t got your name, stranger.” Said Arnold. “My name is Raziar” said the stranger coolly.

“Ok, Raziar, prepare to be squished! I tribute my face-down Stone Statue of the Aztecs to summon my Granmarg the Rock Monarch!” A giant of a man rose up from its card and roared mightily over the playing field. (ATK 2400/DEF 1000) “And when he is summoned, I can destroy a set card on the field, so adios for your face down card on your left.” The giant let loose a cascade of stone spikes, each hitting Raziar's face down card. The card, which was “Mirror Force, slid into Raziar's graveyard. “Ha!” said Arnold. “So you were suspecting my attack? Well, too bad for you! Granmarg, attack!”

The giant now let loose another rainstorm of rocks, which was now aimed at Diseased Knight. “Yes, I was hoping you would attack so that I could activate this, not Mirror Force. That card was simply there as a decoy. Now, activate the trap card: “Horrid hatching season”! Here's the deal: I pay life points until I have only 50 left.” (Raizar : 50) “And now, I get to trade in my cocoon for my Death Squadron Butterfly!”

An utterly horrendous butterfly appeared on the field. (ATK 3000/DEF 1000) Just like Diseased Knight, this monster also had eyeballs placed on unsymmetrically placed around its body. It stretched its wings towards the sky and blood red dust began to spread from its wings. “And now, since my butterfly was summoned to the field by the effect of “Horrid Hatching Season”, I take no damage this turn, your monsters' ATK go to 500 and you must attack my butterfly this turn!” “What?” said Arnold, stumbling slightly backwards, as his Granmarg the Rock Monarch fired an array of stone spikes at Raziar's Death Squadron Butterfly. Arnold's monster was easily destroyed by Raziar's monster, by a black beam fired from all the eyeballs on its body. The beams pierced Granmarg, who was scattered in a thousand pieces and went for Arnold. “Blimey” yelled Arnold, as 2500 of his life points was taken away. (Arnold : 1500). It was over. Arnold had nothing on the field to prevent Raziar's monsters from sending his life points down to 0 during Raziar's next turn.

Arnold's scream flew over the lake, disturbing quite a few from their sleep.

[spoiler=Chapter 2]Chapter 2: King of the Heap

Jupiter woke up. He have had a troubled night, which probably was caused by screaming sounds from somewhere near the lake. “Alas,” Jupiter thought. “Some people are just too rude. Can't a poor bloke even get some sleep at this place... so sad.” He rubbed his eyes, yawned, and got dressed.

He had arrived at Duel Academy the previous evening after his exception trial, which he had stood with glance, becoming an Obelisk Blue as a result. He picked up his duel disk, placed his deck in the deck slot, and looked out the window. “Hmm,” he thought. “Looks like it's going to be rain today.”

And true enough, his prediction had come true, soon the black skies wringed out its raindrops, which pelted any unlucky person standing beneath. Jupiter was watching this scene from the canteen window. He sighed and finished his breakfast.

He was halfway from raising from the table, when he heard someone call his name. “Jupiter, Jupiter!” He turned around and saw his best friend, Peter Blizzaria coming over to his table. “Good morning.” Said Jupiter, picking up his duel disk and went out of the cafeteria with Peter.

“So, looking forward to the duel examination?” said Peter. “Huh?” Jupiter had completely forgot about it. “I thought it was tomorrow.” “Well, we better get our decks ready.” Peter suggested, skidding to a halt by the door out of the Obelisk Blue Dorm. “Yes, we better do.” Both Peter and Jupiter sat down on the floor and looked at their decks.

Ten minutes later, they took their prepared decks, and opened the door out to campus. It had stopped raining now, but the clouds still looked gloomy. It took about five minutes, until they opened the doors that led way into Duel Academy. They opened the doors and went to the duel arena. Half the school was there already, most of them looking forward to the examination, but others was very nervous.

Jupiter and Peter walked over to the teacher, professor Vellian Crowler. “Yes?” he said, turning around as they approached him. “Ah! Good morning, Jupiter. And you too, Peter. I hope you have managed your decks to be in perfect condition? After all, that's the least I could expect from the two students with the best exception marks!” Somewhere behind them, someone snorted. They all turned in the direction of the sound, and found the source of it. A tall Obelisk Blue Student, with long, brown hair, eyed them sourly. He stood leaning against the wall. “Oh, please!” He said. “Those two couldn't fight their way through a paper bag, if they so had a flamethrower.” He abandoned the wall, and came trotting towards them. “I don't see why we should be afraid of a paper bag, unless you might have one in your deck. If you find me annoying or something, you might as well duel me. If that is OK for you, Peter.” Said Jupiter, who was more than willing to see what kind of paper bag this person had in store for him. “OK. Kick his butt, Jupiter.” said Peter, walking through the crowd to find himself a partner for the examination. “But first, a friendly introduction,” said Jupiter, turning to the tall Obelisk Blue Student. “my name is Jupiter. Now it would be polite of you to give me yours.” “The name is Nazol” “Fine then; let the battle commence!” “Yes, let's see how really is the king of the heap!”

Jupiter: 4000.

Nazol: 4000.

“I'll start!” Said Nazol, adding the topmost card of his deck to his hand. “I summon “Amplifier Gamma - Power”, in attack mode!” (ATK 1800/DEF 950) A sinister machine fiend with long tentacles appeared. “And now the special effect of my Amplifier activates! Now all my Amplifiers get 100 attack points for each Amplifier on the field. (ATK 1900/DEF 950) I'll end with a face-down.” “And then, it's my turn.” Jupiter drew a card, and looked at it. “I summon my “Memory Requiem – Despair”.” (ATK 2500/DEF 0) A miserable looking creature, with a top hat, and a red heart on it's chest appeared. No longer had it's holographic image showed on the field, it started glowing with a white glow, and a white and black pattern appeared under its feet.

“2500 attack points? Now that's a little overpowered.” Nazol said, with a suspicious look on his face. “I believe it has some sort of special ability that makes it less overpowered?” “That's right, Nazol. My Memory Requiem - Despair can't destroy a monster by battle, and you see the white and black pattern under it? That's a Memory Zone. As long as my monsters are in one of those, their better effects activates, but if the only monsters I control are in Memory Zones, you can attack me directly. As you can see, it is in a Memory Zone, so now, all battle damage it inflicts to you, is also dealt to me. And when that happens, I draw 1 card.” The look on Jupiter's face changed. From a little cloudy to a cold, stern look. “Now! Feel the pain of my misery! Memory Requiem – Despair, attack! Misery tempest!” At the sound of its attacks name, Jupiter's monster's eyes started glowing white, and thousands of white-glowing shards appeared, forming a circle around it, and started spinning. The circle expanded, and pierced Nazol's monster, which did not get destroyed. The circle continued to expand, until it hit both players.

Jupiter: 3400.

Nazol: 3400.

Nazol stumbled backwards, looking taken aback by the sudden change on Jupiter's face, panting slightly from the attack. “I draw, thanks to my Despair, and I'll end my turn with 4 cards face-down! Your turn.” “Mental, this one.” mumbled Nazol as he drew his card. A sudden smile appeared on his face. “Ah, well.” Jupiter raised his eyebrows, still with the malicious glare in his eyes. “I play the card of your ultimate demise! I summon Amplifier Epsilon – Destruction!” a fierce-looking robot appeared on Nazol's side of the field. (ATK 1400/DEF 700) Just like his previous monster, it possessed long tentacles, but this one was smaller, and it had several spikes sticking out of its back. And of course, thanks to my Power Amplifier, all my monsters gets 100 ATK for each Amplifier I got. And every Amplifier I've got gain its effects as well.” (Amplifier Alpha - Power: ATK 2200/DEF 950) (Amplifier Epsilon – Destruction: ATK 1800/DEF 700) “That's still not enough to beat Despair.” said Jupiter coolly. “I know, but you said it yourself; I can attack you directly if you only control monsters in Memory Zones, and it looks like you do! Destruction, Power; attack!” The two monsters shot laser beams straight at Jupiter's face, but they suddenly stopped. “What the...” Nazol said, scouting the field, looking for the source of the disturbance. He spotted it at last. “I activate my face-down card. And it's called Gravity Bind. Its a pretty known card, so you should know its effect by now, but I'll explain anyway; No level 4 or higher monsters can attack. “But won't that affect your monsters as well?” Jupiter looked up, still with the strict face, but with some of the familiar dreaminess in it. “Memories.” he said at last. “Powerful, yet important. There is no known boundaries of their existence, but still we know them by names. Therefore, no Memory monster is bound by the weakness and restrictions of levels, types and attributes, so their level, is 0, and they have no attribute or type.”

Nazol nodded in understanding as his monster's attacks was repelled from an energy field surrounding Jupiter. “I see. I'll end my turn with a face-down card.” “Jolly good!” said Jupiter, drawing his card. “I think I'll summon this card; Memory Requiem – Anguish.” an utterly malicious-looking monster appeared on the field; it had a pumpkin for its head, and it was holding a staff. “And now, my Despair will attack your Amplifier Epsilon.” the miserable monster formed, once again, the glowing ring, but this time it went for Nazol's other monster. The monster growled in pain as it was pierced by the circle, which expanded to hit both Nazol and Jupiter in the chest.

Jupiter: 2800

Nazol: 2800

Nazol grunted as the air went out of him by the blow. Jupiter remained standing, hardly moving an eyelash. “And now, my sad little friend activate its effect; so I can draw 1 card.” Jupiter drew a card. “But that's the least of your worries; whenever my life points takes a hit, my Anguish grows in strength, so to speak.” he indicated to the pumpkin-headed monster, whose body had begun glowing a faint purple. (ATK 600/DEF 0) “All damage I take, becomes power for my Memory Requiem – Anguish, and when it's destroyed,” he smiled malevolently “you are dealt damage, that equals my monsters attack points... Now let's see here... I'll place 1 card face down and end my turn.”

Jupiter now had four face down cards on his side of the field, as well as Gravity Bind, while Nazol only had one face down card. Nazol thought he ought to act carefully. “My turn.” Nazol drew a card, and his eyebrows contracted with concentration. “OK, then. I sacrifice my two monsters, as to summon this, my ultimate engine of calamity; Amplifier Overlord!” A gigantic machine entered the field, and took place behind its master; several long and spiky tentacles rose from its body, and sudden electrical surges was to be found eventually around its body. (ATK 2800/DEF 1700) “And so to it's effect; it gains the effects of all the amplifiers in my graveyard, but loses 100 ATK for each of them.” (ATK 2600/DEF 1700) “And if you remember, I have the Amplifier Gamma – Power in my graveyard, so my Overlord gets a boost,” (ATK 2700/DEF 1700) “over to my face down card,” the card he meant flipped over. “i activate my trap; Amplifier Assembly! You see, during the turn on which I summon my Overlord, I am allowed to play this little number, and then, I can summon a level 4 or lower amplifier from my hand.” he held up his hand and surveyed it. “I choose this one!” on the other side of the field, Jupiter yawned. Ah, you wait, Nazol thought. “I summon Amplifier Beta – Paralyzer!” Another machine appeared on Nazol's side of the field. It looked like the other ones of its kind, but had slightly more tentacles than any of them. (ATK 1400/DEF 1800) “And thanks to my Overlord, all my monsters give each other 100 ATK for each Amplifier I've got. (Amplifier Overlord: ATK 3000/DEF 1700) (Amplifier Beta – Paralyzer: ATK 1800/DEF 1800)

“When my Paralyzer is on the field, no effects can mess with my attacks, so beat that, you weirdo.” “What did you call me?” Nazol froze. Jupiter's eyes was glinting with a menacing stare; every part of his iris showed rage beyond measure. “Believe me, you will pay for that!” said Jupiter, who looked likely to breathe fire. “OK... back to where I was; my Amplifiers attacks you directly! It's over.” both monsters plunged towards Jupiter, who kept his murderous stare and pointed towards Nazol. “I told you,” he said. “now, prepare for the consequences of your rudeness; I activate Memory of Judgment! So now I am allowed to force the activation of 1 card on the field, so I'll activate my face-down spell; Boundless Fury! And so, I can destroy a card on the field for every Memory Zone on my field, but I cannot enter my battle phase anymore during this duel.” Both of Nazol's monsters was destroyed, Nazol watching helplessly as their pieces littered the floor of the duel arena. “And I am not done yet,” said Jupiter. “I activate my trap card; Murderous Memory. This card can only be activated when two or more monsters are destroyed by the same source, and upon activation, it deals damage to both player's life points equal to their total ATK! Although I lose 2000 damage during my end phase” “So it's a draw, then.” guessed Nazol, frustrated upon the thought of having a draw with this weirdo. Jupiter suddenly smiled.

“I don't think so!” he called. “I activate the trap card; Memorial Shield! It will cancel all damage I take during this turn, but I will lose the duel during the end phase. Nazol gasped, as the pieces of his monsters rose high up into the air, and darted at both players. The pieces flying at Jupiter was easily deflected by a force shield, but then again, Nazol wasn't all that lucky; he grunted as the scrap metal hit him hard in the chest, and knew, that the duel is over.

Jupiter: 2800

Nazol: 0

All around them, cheers rose. Jupiter and Nazol hadn't realized that their duel had attracted so much attention, but it seemed that everyone in the hall, even the duelists still duelling on both sides of them, had watched their duel. “Well, good game.” said Jupiter, who had gone back to her usual self. “You were just lucky,” Nazol said, turning on his heels and walking away from the arena. “but next time, you won't be so lucky! Your lucky luck is over! The next time we meet I will utterly crush you!” and so he walked away.

“What a troubled young man” sighed Jupiter and went with Peter, whom had already finished his duel, and they left for dinner at the Obelisk Dorm.

[spoiler=Chapter 3]A Memorial Trip

Jupiter opened his eyes to the sun's rays, which hit him in the eyes through the open window. He shifted in his bed to avoid the light hitting him again. He started thinking about what he was to do today. Hhm. It was something important I should do today... now, what's the clock, I wonder. He glanced at his clock, which showed 9:27. 9:27, huh? It's a little early yet to waking up. I think I'll just lie back and... He broke that thought off, sitting bolt upright, stricken with panic. “Oh no! I forgot the field trip!”

The first year students were scheduled to a field trip this day, and they were going to sleep in the forest at campus. Jupiter dressed up at high speed, pulling his uniform on the wrong way, roaring in frustration before correcting it. He had luckily enough packed his bag the day before, so he took his shoes on, swung his bag over his shoulder and ran out of the Obelisk dorm to the place where the rest of the first years were. They had gathered at the edge of the forest, and the teachers where already checking names off a list: “...Wheaters, Blizzaria, Apson...” “Here.” Panted Jupiter. Peter heard his voice and appeared from at his side. “Oh, up already?” “Don't start.” Jupiter said, but at that moment, the teachers started leading the pupils into the forest.

It was quite a long journey, but Jupiter and Peter discussed duelling strategy the entire time, so they didn't seem to notice. They were just talking about the best way to have an instant win when a pretty red-haired Slifer Red girl walked past them. “Who's that?” whispered Jupiter to Peter. “Her name is Jenna Rose. Comes from a very rich family, got no friends and several people has discovered her crying.” “So sad...” sighed Jupiter, deciding that she should at least have one friend, he said to her: “Hello, Jenna, how are you doing?” The girl, whose thoughts seemed to have been a very different place, looked up to see who had made contact, discovering it, blushing and quickened her step. “I wonder what her problem is.” said Peter.

At long last, they finally made it to the area in which they would be sleeping. Everyone sighed in delight when they took their backpacks of and stretched their legs. The teachers immediately begun setting up a fire. Jupiter and Peter sat down apart from the others and opened their backpacks for something to eat. Their food had never felt so good, but then again, that could be because they were so exhausted. After a modestly, yet reasonable meal, they started looking around the area. Most of the pupils were also eating, while others were duelling. Peter entertained himself by watching the duels. Jupiter, on the other hand, had noticed a bunch of girls from Slifer Red, including the pretty red haired girl Jenna. They appeared to be talking, but Jupiter couldn't hear what they were talking, but he thought he could understand the subject, as Jenna suddenly ran away from them, with eyes full of tears. Jupiter informed Peter, and they stood up and followed her.

She had run far into the forest, and it was beginning to darken when they found her by a lake. She sat and watched the bright surface of the lake. When Jupiter and Peter approached her, she turned around. Her beautiful face still had lines of tears gleaming on her cheeks. She turned her head once more to the lake, and said in a low voice, “What do you want?” “We just wanted to know if you are all right.” said Jupiter in a calm voice. “It's nothing you have to worry about.” Jenna answered rejectedly. The moon shone sadly from behind the clouds. “It's those girls, isn't it?” Jenna looked up at them for a while, then nodded. “What did they say?” Her blank eyes wandered once again to the mirror-like surface of the lake. “They insulted me for crying all the time.” she said, wiping her eyes with her red sleeve. “Why do you cry, then?” asked Jupiter calmly. “My mother...” she began. “My mother... disappeared last summer, and we haven't heard a word from her since. She was my best friend. Dad never had time for me, as he always had work to do, but mom was always there for me. At school I always was “that pretty rich kid”. I was so alone all the time, but when I came home, my mom would always be there to give me solace. But not anymore. She is gone and I am here, all by my self. My cards is all I have to call as friends, they speak to me, and keep me company, but it isn't the same as having a mom.” after saying this, she burrowed her head in her arms and started shaking, and it was not because of the chilly breeze that came to them from the lake. Jupiter laid an arm around her shoulder, while peter sat down at her side. “Well, isn't that touching?” said a voice abruptly.

All three of them looked up. By some trees some feet away stood a group of cloaked men, staring at them from under their hoods. The one who had spoken was long and lanky, and behind him, two other cloaked silhouettes stood in the background. The cloaked men wore black robes with white runic patterns, and, as Jupiter noticed, they all had a duel disk. “What do you want?” said Peter, as he got up. “Isn't it obvious? Isn't this beautiful night a perfect timing for a duel?” said the cloaked man that spoke earlier. Jupiter got up at his. “Why would we duel you?” the man scratched his chin, as though thinking hard. “Well, let's say we have the upper hand” as he finished that sentence, the ground began to tremble and a stream of purple light rose from the earth. It expanded around the group of six people by the lake, trapping them in a circle that was doused with evil.

“Ooh, fancy light-show, I must say, put I will not stay here.” said Peter, who didn't believe in supernatural phenomena's. He turned and walked to the edge of the light circle and almost broke his nose against the wall of materialized darkness. “What the...” he said, holding his nose, which had started bleeding. “You cannot escape” said one of the cloaked men, who had taken position next to each other, forming a line. “We must duel, to please the Wretched Divinities.” “What are the Wretched Divinities?” asked Jenna, who had stood up as well, but still standing behind Jupiter. “You dare speak of them?! You insolent...” but the man was stopped by the man who had first spoken to them. “Be quiet, Bars, they're just curious children.” “But Silchis, they dare speak of the,” the man called Bars began, but was silenced once more by a wave of Silchis' hand. Silchis stared up at the sky, and started speaking. “At first, all matter was darkness, nothing, void. All that matter was ruled by the Wretched Divinities. But then, light shone through the darkness, like a lamp turned on in a dark room, and the Wretched Divinities was forced to live in their own dimension, the negative dimension. Now, they have awakened from their slumber, and their chosen ones has risen to arms to free them from their shackles to become the rulers of all things!”

“I don't get it,” said Peter. “where does we come into the picture?” Silchis looked at him, then said: “The Wretched Divinities can only be freed by consuming spiritual energy from the ones chosen by the light, feeding on that power by turning it into darkness.” “`The ones chosen by the light´? You are certain that it is us?” said Jupiter. “We are never certain in our quest, but a strange source of spiritual energy that we had never felt before came from this spot, so you see, for you, escaping is not an option.”

Jupiter nodded, then inserted his deck into his duel disk. “You can't seriously mean this?” said Jenna's scared voice from behind him. Jupiter turned to face her, and she winced. Jupiter's face was not like she had ever seen it before; his eyes was cold, and looked wilder. Jenna thought she saw a glimmer of scarlet. “We have to do this.” he said, and his voice was as chilly as the winter nights themselves. “J-Jupiter?” Jupiter nodded. Jenna, still shaking, marched next to Jupiter, opposite one of the cloaked men. “Let's do this!” exclaimed Peter, who was already set to duel.

Jupiter 4000 – Silchis 4000

Peter 4000 – Bars 4000

Jenna 4000 - ? 4000

To be continued...

[spoiler=Chapter 4]The Deathmatch

Jupiter: 4000 Silchis: 4000

Peter: 4000 Bars: 4000

Jenna: 4000 ???: 4000

The duel had begun, and thus all the six players drew 5 cards each. “I'll go first!” said Silchis, Jupiter's opponent, and drew a card from his deck. “I'll also summon this, my Seoul Berserker, in attack mode.” A card flipped up, and out came a brutal looking monster, with thick arms and vicious-looking claws. It looked as though it was made of vapour. (ATK: 1900/DEF 0) “I'll also add two face-down cards to my field.” said Silchis, and ended his turn at the arrival of two face-down cards on his side of the field.

“Fine then, my turn!” Jupiter added his deck's top card to his hand, and sneered; his hand was perfect. “Tremble at the descending terror coming your way, I summon Memory Requiem – Anguish!” The all so familiar pumpkin-headed creature rose from its card hologram. (ATK 0/DEF 0) “And I will summon it in a Memory Zone.” The malevolent monster became shrouded in a white glow, and a black and white pattern appeared under its feet.

“What gives? Memory Zones?” Silchis had obviously never heard of this phenomena before. “A Memory Zone rips my monsters of their identities; they lose their attribute and type, and their levels become 0, and if all the monsters I control are in Memory Zones, you can attack me directly, but the Memory monsters gains their best effects while in a Memory Zone.” said Jupiter. “Those effects has got to be damn good, if you're willing to go that far to obtain them.” leered Silchis. “So, is that all?” “Almost correct. I end my turn with two face-down cards.” The two holograms appeared and once again, the turn was given to Silchis.

Peter and Bars had also started the duel. Peter had requested first on whoever to go first, and so he drew his card. “I summon Aged Shell, in defence position.” A big monster appeared. It had thick shells that covered its body, and was partly covered in a thick veil of snow and ice. (ATK 300/DEF 2200) “That'll end my turn.” “Then, obviously, it's my turn now.” said Bars in his rough voice and drew a card from his deck. “I'll summon Magistar's Sentinel, in defence position.” An ancient looking sphinx-like creature appeared on Bars' side of the field. It spread its mechanical wings and glared at Peter with a cunning look. (ATK 0/DEF 2000)

“I'll also lay down a face-down card, and that pretty much conclude my turn.” “Fine, then. I draw.” said Peter and did just so. “But before I do anything else, the effect of my Aged Shell kicks in, so it gains an Age Counter.” At once, the iced parts on his monster expanded, so that much more of it was covered in frost. “But more of that later. I summon my Aged Beast, in attack mode!” A savage-looking beast with elongated fangs and claws appeared on Peters field. Just like his other monster, this one also had parts on its body covered in ice and snow. (ATK 1900/DEF 1400) “And now, I activate the effect of my Aged Shell, so you lose 300 Life Points for each Age Counter on it.” The monster threw a chunk of ice at Bars. But for some reason, Bars grunted in pain. He held himself to his chest, where the monster had hit, as though it hurt. (Bars: 3700)

“Are you allright?” Peter asked. “Never you mind.” answered Bars, and panted. “What's going on?” “This is a Deathmatch.” said Bars, as though that explained everything. “Afraid you have to tell me more of the so-called `Deathmatch´ of yours.” Jupiter and Jenna stopped duelling and paid attention to Bars, but however, Silchis was the one who spoke: “A Deathmatch is a ritual match to feed the Wretched Divinities. All damage caused by monsters here is real, and therefore, you take real damage. Think of your Life Points as the time you have left to live. When it reaches 0, your lives are at an end.”
