personally, I see it as: you shouldn't be able to burn someone to death on turn 1 using 6 or less cards. the only spell card I know of that can deal more than 1000 by itself is wave motion, and that needs charge time. so it comes down to what cost is acceptable for 1000+ burn. we have limits on meteor, tremendous hurts you back, ante can backfire easily, and misfortune requires a monster on the field that isn't yours AND skips your battle phase.

 

what limits/ costs are acceptable? and what limits/costs are not easily abusive? I don't remember ever seeing a discard for burn, and that might be because of the fact that we would happily discard certain cards for this, like mal, treeborn, serpent (in traditional), disk, dasher, etc. the list goes on.

 

in essence, would you play a discard for burn spell that did only 700 points? what about 900?

 

if that is yes in the majority, that might be why we haven't seen one to date.

Let's say there is a spell card card that deals 2700 damage but requires you to discard 1 card to activate. If you happen to draw 3 of those cards on the first turn' date=' you can use up all your resources to win the game. This is just over the limit, so the highest amount of damage for that card to deal is 2600, since it doesn't kill your opponent immediately if you play all 3 of them (though that card shouldn't be allowed when there are so many other burn cards, because then the very next card you drew would make you win).

 

Playing another such card that doesn't require you to discard will make you lose half the amount of resources. Therefore, the highest amount of damage for that card to deal is also half the previous amount.

 

1300, that's how much damage spark can deal at the highest.

Meteor is fine at 3. Think of it this way. You play a Deck full of Direct Damage cards. The most you are going to do to your opponent in 1 Turn is 5000 (3 Meteors and 2 Tremendous Fire) Your hand would then be empty, Direct Damage cards promote Major card Disadvantage,
