Anyway, [this is for the sake of an artist thing and not strictly cutesy this time]...Maybe expand it to 3/4 the image and color them in a nice solid vector color? Then use a multitude of various but similar hues to color the rest 1/4 for a nice effect? EDIT @ Aster: Even the best art can be 3 squares.
