Double Discussion - Theme and Reusability

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure this would go here, but if not then people please move this thread.

This is a discussion about two different, unrelated things: Theme destruction and reusability. I'd like to start with the first, being theme destruction. Does it seem fair to have cards that completely stop deck themes in their tracks, such as Zombie World and All-Out Attacks? If so, what makes them balanced? Please don't use an excuse like "nobody uses those decks", because you would be completely wrong. And who's to say that in the future they wouldn't be a possible top-tier deck? To me it seems slightly ridiculous to have cards that support a theme, while at the same time hindering others.

Now for the latter. Spell/Trap Cards that would gain benefit from being returned to your hand. This goes for cards that remain face-up only, because I am basing this upon the effect of the Cosmos Fortress Gol'Gar. What are some cards that would be good for this? "Swords of Revealing Light" comes to mind first, because it seems to me as long as Cosmos remained on the field, you could have continually monster flipping and attack prevention. And cards for the Alien theme like "Mass Hypnosis" would be good.

All-Out Attacks isn't balanced and does deserved to be banned. Don't all decks hinder your opponent?

Yes, but they do so through a long process, as opposed to rendering all of your opponent's main tactics useless. Zombie World makes monarchs unable to use their effects, as well as stops certain decks from using cards or effects for cards in their Graveyard or on the field (Necrofear, Megarock, Warrior Returning Alive, Botanical Lion, etc).

All-out Attacks makes defending decks harder to use, forcing your Nimble into attack position, and whatever you summon with Marauding Captain will instantly be forced to attack. Tomato has less use, and if you're running an Ojama deck this makes you hurt. The list goes on. I just can't think of anything else right now.

Things like Zombie World, Royal Oppression, etc. are the reason why we have a side deck. Use round 1 to 'scout' what the opponent is using, and then look in your side deck to see what you have against it.

If you don't have anything in your side deck against it, then you should just improve it next time.

Skill Drain, Oppression, etc. come at a price, though, and wont completely block off the opponent's options. Cards like Exiled Force and Stardust Dragon can still activate their effects, and be able to Summon themselves, as well as activate support cards for your theme that are not monsters (in most cases), even though all other monster effects will be blocked off. Oppression will still let you Normal Summon and activate effects of theme-supporting cards that may or may not Special Summon, depending on timing and ruling.

Zombie World just rapes type-specific themes. You can activate some non-specific theme cards, like one that will let you add Glads to your hand, but you can't use Type-Specific cards for your Graveyard or your field, nor can you even Tribute Summon unless you're running Zombies, giving Zombie decks a type advantage. Plants lose their re-summon abilities and Tribute Summons (essentially blocking off most of their moves), Warriors lose returnability from the Graveyard from certain card effects, Rock-Types can't be removed for Megarock or Gaia Plate.. ect.

Skill Drain has ways around it. And it comes at a cost, as well is not searchable really. Same with Oppression, and both decks using this will have to live with a tougher way of playing as well, so in a way they become balanced.

slayer_supreme 1000 points isn't much of a price to pay to stop JD, DAD, Monarch, and much more. Skill Drain stops many deck in there tracks until a spell/trap destruction card get played to destroy it. Jowgen stops and oppression stop all special summons which many decks heavily use, but still these cards are balanced despite the fact they stop many decks.

Stopping decks is not why All Out Attacks is ban-worthy. Its becuase that its OTKs.

All-Out Attacks can force you to OTK yourself if you were to use the effects of certain cards. And as I said, Skill Drain has the cost of forcing your opponent to play a different, harder to use decktype as well, and Jowgen is very limited in his use due to his extremely low ATK and DEF.

And can someone discuss the second part? xP
