Here is my first ever fanfic. So here I go!

[spoiler=New Rising Star]

[spoiler=Chapter One]

Chapter One

“Wake up, Mark! I’m not going to tell you again,” Mrs. Nguyen yelled from the bedroom doorway. After a quick check to see that her son would get out of bed on time, she walked briskly back toward the kitchen, where an aroma of delicious bacon wafted into the bedroom.

Mark lifted his drowsy body off of the bed, and groaned, remembering what today’s events held. Today was the first day of Duel School, meaning more homework, more tests, more teachers, more studying. Great.

Mark Nguyen was fourteen years old, with long, jet-black hair. He was average height and weight, but despite his lean, cut body, Mark loved to eat. Breakfast was essentially the only thing in the morning that motivated him to get out of bed.

After a quick wash and a change of clothes, Mark (now refreshed and awake after his shower) trekked down to the kitchen, where bacon and freshly scrambled eggs awaited patiently on his plate. He eagerly sat down at the wooden table, and dug in with no holds barred. Mouthful after mouthful, Mark forgot about school to take pleasure in the hearty meal in front of him.

It wasn’t in front of him for too much longer, though. He had finished. And with minutes to spare. Mark decided to go to school now, early or not.

After a quick hug and farewell to his mom, Mark stepped outside. He hopped on to his red bike that he got last year for Christmas, and he was off.

Racing down the sidewalk, Mark found a bunch of kids on the other side of the street walking to the school he was going to. “Not that weird,” Mark shrugged. “I’m not the only one going to this school.” Then he saw an attractive girl with long blond hair whipping around in the wind. Mark was stupefied, unable to tear his eyes away from her.

Eventually, Mark did tear his eyes away, because if he didn’t, he would have slapped headfirst into a bus sign pole, which would of hurt. A lot. Mark luckily swerved his bike, scarcely missing the metal rod. After that incident, Mark paid attention only to what was in front of him, not what was beside him. Despite his attentive oath, the beautiful girl kept to the back of his mind for the rest of the jaunt.

He arrived at school ten minutes early. The Duel School was four large buildings, cramped in an unusually small place. According to the school’s letter he had received mid-summer, he was in School 4. He took a walk down the hallways, remembering previous years. “Good times,” Mark said to himself, with a touch of longing.

Mark quickly found his assigned room, number two sixty-four. He captured a deep breath, then opened the door, and went in.

The first thing he noticed was that the room was well lit up, nothing like the cloudy, dark outside morning. Weird first thing to notice, huh? Not when you’re this tired. Class had obviously not started yet, but five to ten students were already here. “Early, like me,” Mark considered. From there on, he saw a teacher, his teacher, at a desk. The teacher had long brown hair, and had a cheerful face. Mark walked up to him.

“Um, excuse me, I’m n-new here and-“ Mark was cut off.

“Well, aren’t we all new today?” he said with a beaming grin. “I’m Mr. Henderson, and I’m going to be your teacher for this year. Glad to meet you!”

“Thanks. I was wondering where I should sit.”

“Hmm,” Mr. Henderson avowed. “How about in that seat right there?” He gestured toward a seat at the front.

“Great. Thanks.” With that, Mark scuffled to his seat and sat down. Looking at the clock, he had time to kill. He brought out his deck, and made changes. Before he knew it, the bell rang. Kids streamed into the room, talking about who knows what.

“Okay kids, settle down, just find a seat and sit,” Mr. Henderson ordered. After about a minute, people found seats and silenced.

“So it’s a new year, with more work,” the teacher said, while passing out Duel Disks. The class groaned. “I should say, ‘Get out your textbook and start reading from page 132!’ but that wouldn’t be fun, would it?” Excitement was growing in Mr. Henderson’s voice. The Duel Disks were distributed. “Let’s start with a duel!”

The class was ostensibly appeased with this statement and roared with approval. Mark half-expected Mr. Henderson to say, “Let’s get ready to rumble!!”

“So can I have two volunteers?” A bunch of students raised their hands.

“Serene,” he said, pointing to a girl in the back of the room. Mark suddenly remembered her. She was the girl he saw on his bike on the way to school. She elegantly strolled down the aisle to the front of the room, where she stopped and turned around. You could almost hear the boys drooling.

“And Mark,” Mr. Henderson said. Mark slowly walked up to the front next to Serene.

The Duel Disks were placed on their arms, and they snapped forward into one piece, resembling a duel field. Mark and Serene placed their forty-card decks into the holder, and they drew five cards, indicating the start of the duel.

“DUEL!!”

[spoiler=Chapter Two (Incomplete)]

Chapter Two

“DUEL!”

Mark: 4000

Serene: 4000

“I’ll go first,” said Serene. She drew a card from her Duel Disk. She smiled smugly. “Too bad for you, I never lose!” she taunted confidently.

“Whatever.”

That solitary word struck a chord in Serene’s system, as if someone just scissored a vein. She was never ignored before, and she was always feared as a duelist. Being ignored was new to her. Nevertheless, she pulled herself back together, and started playing the game.

“I Summon Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat, in Attack Mode!” A pinkish feline beast appeared on Serene’s side of the field. It growled, ready to fight. “Now I’ll set one facedown card, and I’ll end.” (ATK: 1200)

“My turn,” Mark said, drawing a card. “I’ll call Flame Dragon to the field in Attack Mode!” A realistic, menacing image of a red dragon rose near Mark, fire emitting from its nostrils. (ATK: 1800) “Attack!!”

The dragon released a prodigious sphere of sheer flame, headed straight for Amethyst Cat. Hitting dead center, the creature shattered into thousands of pieces, somewhat like a breaking window.

Mark: 4000

Serene: 3400

“I’ll move her to the Spell & Trap Card Zone,” murmured Serene, talking to no one in particular. “Draw!” Serene stared at her cards, and decided her course of action. “I Summon Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus!” A light-blue horse transfigured on to the field, glittering. (ATK: 1800) "Attack!"

Both dragon and pegasus gave a ferocious battle, ending in a draw. Both creatures shattered, leaving neither Serene nor Mark any battle damage. Serene slipped her card into the Spell & Trap Card Zone, increasing her total to two. But she wasn't finished.

"I add Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger to my Spell & Trap Card Zone, due to my Pegasus's effect." Now she had three. Now it was over. "My turn!" She drew a card, and yelled, " I tribute all three Crystal Beasts, to play Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder!!" (ATK: 4000)

[spoiler=Chapter 1]

Chapter 1

“Wake up Mark, and I’m not going to tell you again,” Mrs. Nguyen said.

Mark rolled out of bed.

Mark Nguyen was a boy of fourteen with long, jet-black hair. Every day, he wore

the same thing. Baggy jeans and a T-shirt. His attire was laughed at, but he

didn’t care.

It was the first day of school. Mark bolted down his breakfast, grabbed his

dueling deck, and speeded out the door.

After he arrived at the dueling school, he chained up his bike and rushed

through the school gates. He saw a hallway and noticed it was in the 200’s.

(He was in room 264.) He quickly found the room.

Mark twisted the doorknob, took a deep breath, and went in.

The room was filled with young duelists just like him. Mark saw a girl, a pretty

girl, talking with all of her friends. She looked at him, and he quickly turned

away.

“If you would all sit in a seat, we can begin today’s lesson,” said Mr. Henderson,

room 264’s instructor. He passed out Duel Disks while talking. “I would

normally say to open your duel guides, but I

would rather get to know you all. Can I have a few volunteers?”

Only a handful of students actually raised their hands. The girl Mark had saw

earlier was one of them.

“Serene,” he said, pointing to the girl. “And Mark. Would you both come to the

front of the class?”

Mark was stretching and didn’t know he would be picked.

Serene was staring at him. Mark blushed.

“Ready, set, DUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!” Mr. Henderson yelled.

The class roared.

“What?” Mark thought.

Serene looked a bit surprised, too.

They both strapped on their new Duel Disks and yelled. “Let’s Duel!”

They both drew five cards.

Mark: 8000

Serene: 8000

“I take the initiative. Draw!” said Serene.

“I play Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat in attack mode!” (ATK: 1200)

“I’ll also play a face-down card and end my turn.”

Mark drew. “I play Flame Dragon in attack mode!” (ATK: 1800)

“Attack with Flame Dragon!”

A prodigious sphere of flame flew out of the dragon’s mouth toward the cat.

It was blasted into oblivion.

Mark: 8000

Serene: 7400

“You activated my cat’s special ability!” Serene said.

“It will move to my Spell and Trap card Zone as a Continuous Spell Card. All

other Crystal Beasts have this effect. It’s my turn.”

Serene drew her card. She smiled. “I play Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus!”

(ATK: 1800) “It allows me to put from my deck one Crystal Beast monster in my

Spell and Trap Card Zone. I choose another Pegasus!”

“Now there are two of them in her Spell and Trap Card Zone.” thought Mark.

“What is she going to do with them?”

“I activate Crystal Promise!” Serene yelled. “With this I can Special Summon a

Crystal Beast monster from my Spell and Trap Card Zone to the field. I choose

Sapphire Pegasus! When my Sapphire Pegasus is Summoned, I get to get another

Crystal Beast to my Spell and Trap Card Zone! I will add a Crystal Beast Topaz

Tiger,” Serene said.

“I am safe from her attacks,” Mark thought. “Unless……….”

“I’ll attack with my first Pegasus!” Serene said.

Flame Dragon: ATK 1800. Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus: ATK 1800.

With an explosion, both creatures died.

“Now it goes to my Spell and Trap Card Zone,” Serene said smugly.

“I’ll also attack you directly!”

“Agghhhhh….” Mark said.

Mark: 6200

Serene: 7400

Mark drew a card. “I activate Monster Reborn, reviving Flame Dragon!

he won’t be around much longer, though,” Mark smirked. “I sacrifice Flame

Dragon in order to summon Thestalos, the Firestorm Monarch!” (ATK: 2400)

“With his special ability, I discard a card from your hand and you take damage

equal to that monster’s Level x100!”

Mark chose a card, and by the look on her face, he had nailed a key card.

She was forced to discard Level 10 Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder.

1000 Life Points sizzled away.

Mark: 6200

Serene: 6400

“Before I attack, I’ll use Mystical Space Typhoon on Topaz Tiger!” Mark yelled.

“Now I’ll attack your Sapphire Pegasus!” It went to the Spell and Trap card Zone.

Mark: 6200

Serene: 5800

“End turn!” Mark felt like he had the upper hand, and he did.

Serene drew a card, and her gloomy expression suddenly lightened.

“I activate Monster Reincarnation! By discarding one card from my hand, I get a

monster from my graveyard to my hand. And the one I choose can be

summoned by tributing three Continuous Spell Cards on my side of the field.”

“Wait, no way, could it…………..” Mark thought.

“I choose Hamon, Lord of Stiking Thunder!!!!!” (ATK: 4000) Serene yelled

triumphantly.

The class oohed and ahhed at the ferocious Sacred Beast.

“Hamon, attack!” Thestalos was stuck by lightning and immediately

disinagrated.

Mark: 3800

Serene: 5800

“Why did I take 1000 extra damage?” Mark asked.

“Because of Hamon’s special ability,” Serene said. “When he destroys a monster,

you take 1000 extra damage.”

“My turn.” Mark drew a card.

“I play Fire Wall of the Ancients in Defense mode. (DEF: 2100)

“I’ll also play a face-down card.”

“Now it’s my turn,” Serene said. “I play Fairy Meteor Crush on Hamon!”

“Oh, no…..” Mark thought.

“Now when Hamon attacks, all the difference of my ATK over your DEF will be

inflicted to you! Hamon, attack!! And don’t forget his special effect.”

Mark: 900

Serene: 5800

“Draw,” said Mark. “Sorry, Serene! I’m ‘gonna wrap this up! Activate Premature

Burial to bring Thestalos back!”

Mark: 100

Serene: 5800

“So what?” Serene said. “Hamon is more than a match for Thestalos.”

“Not when I sacrifice him for the Great Maju Garzett!!!!” Mark yelled.

Great Maju Garzett ATK: 4800

“What? A 6-star with 4800 ATK??!!?!” Serene stared in disbelief.

My Great Maju Garzett’s ATK points are the sacrificed monster’s ATK, but

doubled!” Mark grinned. “Great Maju Garzett, ATTACK!”

A slimy ball of sludge flew at Hamon. Serene knew nothing in her deck could

stop this beast. The mire hit Hamon square in the chest.

Mark: 100

Serene: 5000

Mark was motivated. “Come on! It’s your turn!”

Serene didn’t even need to draw a card to play her turn. She placed her hand

over her deck. (Placing your hand over your deck is a way of surrendering)

“I surrender.”

Mark: 100

Serene:0

[spoiler=Chapter 2]

Chapter 2

“And the winner is Mark!” Mr. Henderson said.

The class applauded the great duel.

Mark didn’t believe it.

“Serene still had a chance,” Mark thought. “Why did she surrender?”

That question burned into his brain until the end of school, when Mark

finally got the courage to ask.

Serene answered, “You won, isn’t that enough for you?”

“No, it’s not! If you threw the game, I want a rematch!” Mark said.

“Hmph,” Serene said. She walked away.

Mark rode home on his bicycle, infuriated for winning a fake duel.

When his mom asked, “How was school, honey?” he answered “Good.”

Later that night, Mark was thinking, “why would Serene surrender?”

He mulled that question over for quite some time. He finally fell asleep.

The next day at school, Mark asked again. Serene still wouldn’t answer.

He gave up after a week of pestering.

One day at school, Mark was buying lunch. Marvin Lukinson, the

class bully, tapped him on the shoulder. Instinctively, Mark looked to see

who wanted to talk with him. However, it wasn’t a he. Or a she. It was a

fist. It hit him smack in the face. Mark was thrown to the ground. Marvin

stole his lunch money and walked away. “He’s out like a light,” Marvin

sniggered with all his other bulky friends. Marvin was just going to use

the money when…………………………………………………….

“I’ll duel you for that money!” Mark had gotten up.

“Sure, but do you know what you’re getting yourself into?” Marvin asked.

Mark ignored him. “The rules are simple: I win, I get my money back. You

win,……what do you want?”

Marvin said, “I get your deck.” Mark flinched. His own deck? His own

hand-crafted deck? “It’s not worth it,” Mark said.

“Fine then,” Marvin said. “I will repay every kid I stole from, and give them

one rare card each. Also, I will never bully again.”

Mark hesitated. “Fine!”

“Let’s Duel!”

Mark: 8000

Marvin: 8000

“I will go first,” Mark said. “Draw!”

“I play Red Pyromancer, in attack mode!” (ATK: 1500)

“I’ll also play a facedown.

“My turn,” Marvin yells. Activate Double Summon! I summon Kuriboh, and

now sacrifice it for Lava Battleguard!” (ATK: 1550)

“What a weak monster,” Mark thought. “For one sacrifice?”

“I know what you’re thinking,” Marvin said. “But too bad for you, my Lava

Battleguard gains 500 ATK for every other Lava Battleguard on the field,

including itself!” Lava Battleguard ATK: 2050.

“Whoa,” Mark said.

“Attack!” Marvin yelled.

The Lava Battleguard clubbed the Pyromancer with his thorny club.

Mark: 7450

Marvin: 8000

“When my Red Pyromancer goes to the Graveyard, I can draw a card,”

Mark said. “My turn.”

Mark analyzed Marvin and the situation.

“His deck is obviously a beatdown, probably revolving around

Battleguards,” Mark thought.

“I play Fire Wall of the Ancients, in defense mode!” (DEF: 2100)

“He has just enough defense points to survive,” Mark thought.

“I play Monster Reborn, to bring Red Pyromancer back from YOUR

Graveyard to MY field!” Marvin smiled. “Now I sacrifice it to play another

Lava Battleguard!” Both Lava Battleguards: ATK: 2550

“Before I attack, I activate Mystical Space Typhoon!”

“My facedown is gone!” Mark exclaimed.

“Attack!” His wall was destroyed and he took a direct hit.

Mark: 4900

Marvin: 8000

“I play Flame Dragon in Defense Mode!” Mark said. (DEF: 1600)

“Draw,” Marvin said.

“I play Lava Minion in Attack Mode!” (ATK: 1300) “And I’ll play a facedown

card.”

“Attack!” Flame Dragon died by the prickly club.

“And two direct attacks!”

Mark: 1050

Marvin: 8000

“My t-turn,” Mark stuttered. He drew his card. It was nothing that could

save him. He should surrender, he thought.

He moved his arm to place it on the deck. Just before he did………..

“Mark!” He turned. It was Serene.

“Don’t surrender! You’ve still got a chance!” Serene yelled.

“Tell that to yourself,” Mark smiled weakly, remembering their previous

duel.

Serene thought for a few seconds, then said, “The reason I surrendered

was because I was scared. Scared of losing. Before this, I had never lost a

duel.” Serene had tears in her eyes. “And just because I surrendered,

doesn’t mean you should too!”

“Okay!” Mark was determined.

Mark: 1050

Marvin: 8000

This was it. The final draw. Could he do it?

“Draw!” Mark yelled. He glanced at his card.

“I play three cards facedown,” Mark said. “And end my turn.”

“Draw,” Marvin smirked.

“Play Pot of Greed.” Hand: 4

“Now I sacrifice Lava Minion to play Swamp Battleguard!” (ATK: 1800)

“Swamp Battleguard gains 500 ATK for every Lava Battleguard on my

field.” Swamp Battleguard ATK: 2800

“Now I play Gift of the Martyr!”

“What does that do?” Mark asked.

“By sacrificing Lava Battleguard, I can add his ATK to Swamp Battleguard’s

ATK! Now go!” Swamp Battleguard ATK: 4850

“Now play one more Gift of the Martyr!” Swamp Battleguard ATK: 6400

“Attack!!!!!!”

“Activate trap card Magic Cylinder! Now you will take 6400 damage!”

“Not so fast, I play Seven Tools of the Bandit! By paying 1000 Life Points,

your card will die!”

“Not if I have another trap………Seven Tools of the Bandit!” Mark yelled

triumphantly.

“What?!!??” Marvin said.

“Now Magic Cylinder will go through!”

Mark: 50

Marvin: 1600

“Now it’s my turn!” Mark said.

“Swamp Battleguard’s ATK fades back to normal……..” Marvin said,

stunned.

“I play Monster Reborn on Lava Battleguard!” (ATK: 2050)

“You fool! When Lava Battleguard is on my field, he gains 500 ATK!”

Marvin said, gesturing at Swamp Battleguard.

“Too bad for you…….” Mark said coolly, “He’s on my side of the field!!!!!!”

“Summon Fire Lancer in attack mode!” Mark said. (ATK: 1400)

“Lava Battleguard, Attack!” Swamp Battleguard was killed.

Mark: 50

Marvin: 1350

“Now, Fire Lancer, hit him!”

Mark: 50

Marvin: 0

“It’s over, you jerk,” Mark said, taking back his money.

[spoiler=Chapter 3]

Chapter 3

Later that night, Mark lay in bed, thinking about his duel with Marvin.

“I did well,” he thought. He rolled over and fell asleep.

The next day at school was normal. The bell rang for class to be out.

Everyone ran home, but Mark stayed to study a bit, for they were having a

test the next day. “Counter Traps cannot be Chained on, unless it is

another Counter Trap, because it is a Speed Spell 3, no 4…...” Mark

muttered under his breath. He couldn’t take it any more. He closed his

book and stood up. He looked outside of the window.

“Whoa,” he said aloud, even though no one was there to hear it.

It was dusk. “I’d better ride home, fast!” Mark exclaimed.

He hopped on his bike and pedaled at top speed. Suddenly, a rope flew

out of nowhere. It got caught in the spokes of the wheel and Mark

crashed. “Owww…” Mark said, touching his cut. He got up and saw a

cloaked figure right next to him. The man swiftly chopped at Mark’s

neck. He blacked out.

He awoke 4 hours later in a dark alley. His neck throbbed. It was 10:00

P.M. “What the….!” Mark said. His mother was strapped against a wall,

trying to break free. Mark rushed to her aid. The cloaked figure appeared

out of thin air and blocked his route. “What do you want from me??!!!??!?”

Mark screamed. “You and your mother’s soul…” the cloaked figure said in

a cracked voice. “Why?” Mark carefully asked. “The Almighty One needs

some fresh souls..” he replied, then added, “The only way out of here,” He

held out a card. “Is through me.” Mark knew what he had to do. Mark

hesitated. “Fine…….” Mark said quietly.

“What did you say?” the cloaked figure urged.

“I said, fine!” Mark yelled. “If I lose, you get both of our souls!”

Mrs. Nguyen fainted. “But if I win, you will tell me about this “Almighty

One”, and you will never bother us again!”

“Sure, I’ll do that,” the cloaked man said. “If you can beat me!”

“Let’s Duel!”

Mark: 8000

??????: 8000

“By the way, my name is Xavier, if that makes your dueling any easier,”

Xavier ragged.

“Shut up and let’s duel,” Mark said, disgusted. “I’ll go first,” Mark said,

“Play Blue Pyromancer in Defense Mode!” (DEF: 1500) “End turn with a

facedown.”

“My turn,” Xavier stated. “I play Beige, Vanguard of Dark World in Attack

Mode.” (ATK: 1600)

“Attack!” Xavier yelled.

The Blue Pyromancer was slashed into sashimi.

“His special ability means that you discard a card!” Mark said, confidently.

“Go ahead, and choose one,” Xavier said, holding out his hand.

“The one on the far right!” Mark said, hoping for his best card.

“Good choice, it’s my best card,” Xavier said. “It’s a Dark World card, and

you know what happens when a Dark World monster is sent to the

Graveyard from your hand……” Mark cringed.

“I can Special Summon it!!!!!” Xavier finished.

“I Special Summon Reign-Beaux, Overlord of Dark World!” (ATK: 2500)

“I use his Special Ability!” Mark’s trap card blew up.

“Attack, Reign-Beaux!”

Mark: 5500

Xavier: 8000

“My turn,” Mark said. He drew. “By discarding Thestalos, the Firestorm

‘Monarch, I can Special Summon The Tricky!” (ATK: 2000)

“Next I play Rush Recklessly! It adds 700 ATK to The Tricky!” (ATK: 2700)

“Attack Reign Beaux!”

“Agghhhh….” Xavier moaned.

Mark: 5500

Xavier: 7800

“I’ll end,” Mark said. The Tricky: ATK 2000.

“Draw,” Xavier said. “Yes! Set one card facedown. End turn.”

“Draw,” Mark said. “I summon Flame Dragon!” (ATK:1800)

“Double Attack!”

“Not so fast, I activate my Trap Card, Fine!”

“Ohhh, crap,” Mark thought.

“I get to discard two cards!” Xavier yelled. “I’ll choose……….”

“Silva, Warlord of Dark World, and Goldd, Wu-lord of Dark World!”

(Silva: ATK: 2300/Goldd: ATK: 2300)

“I won’t attack then…….” Mark said, dismayed.

“My turn! Attack!”

Both of Mark’s monsters were killed instantly.

Mark: 4700

Xavier: 7800

“My turn,” Mark said. “I set one facedown, and end my turn.”

“Draw,” Xavier said. “Attack!”

Mark: 100

Xavier: 7800

“My t-turn,” Mark stuttered. “Draw. Set another facedown. End.”

“Draw,” Xavier said. “ATTACK!!!!!”

“Reverse card open,” Mark said. “Mirror Force!”

The attack was rejected and sent back at the monsters.

KABAM! They both detonated.

“Now it’s my turn! Draw!” Mark said. “Activate Monster Reborn! Bring back

Thestalos!” (ATK: 2400)

“Sacrifice him for………Great Maju Garzett!!!” (ATK: 4800)

“He’s not enough to defeat me,” Xavier laughed.

“Yeah, not until I activate my facedown, Megamorph! When I have lower

Life Points, one monster on my side of the field’s ATK doubles!”

Great Maju Garzett: ATK: 9600

“Attack!!!!!” Mark yelled.

Mark: 100

Xavier: 0

“It’s over, give it up,” Mark said.

“Alright, alright,” Xavier said. “I’ll tell you…………………………..

[spoiler=Chapter 4]

Chapter 4

“The Almighty One is the foundation of all evil in this world,”

Xavier elucidated. “He’s a bloodthirsty fiend.” Mark listened

attentively. “I actually was forced to battle you, not that I

wanted to kill you,” Xavier reassured him.

Should I trust him? Mark contemplated. He might have useful

information. “My master will have my head for this,” Xavier

smiled. “Goodbye Mark, and next time we meet, you won’t be

so lucky.” Suddenly, Xavier’s body dissolved. Mark watched in

perplexity.

Mark’s mother was able to move again, and they walked home,

too tired to talk. They both went to bed without a word.

“Mark!” yelled Mrs. Nguyen. “Mark!” Mark blinked. Sunlight

pierced through his drapes on his windows. He suddenly

recalled the previous night’s events. It seemed it had never

happened, but it had. He sat up, and dozily responded “Yeah?”

“Get up! It’s time for school!” Oh, crap. School. He had

completely forgotten. School started at 8:15. It was 8:10. Mark

threw his clothes on and grabbed a banana and ate it on his

bike, during the red lights. He was 5 minutes late. Not too

shabby. Mr. Henderson was straight-forward this morning.

“Today, class, by request of the principal we will hold an

extra-curricular tournament in our class. But it’s not just any

tournament,” Mr. Henderson grinned. “It’s a tag-team

tournament.” The room was silent until one boy asked, “How

will partners be decided?” Mr. Henderson replied, “Good

question. The partners will be randomly decided by. . . . this!!”

An electronic board in the back of the class read:

Mark/Serene | Bobby/Marisa | Kevin/Rene | Udonis/Sarah.

There was more names, but this half was the only part that mattered.

Mark could not believe it, but the board clearly read

“Mark/Serene.” Serene looked at him, but he couldn’t return

the glance. “Well,” Mr. Henderson said. “How about we kick it

off with. . . .Mark Nguyen and Serene Jowgen versus Bobby

Court and Marisa Edmonson!!”

Before rising from his seat, Mark slipped two cards into his

deck. All four of them bellowed, “Let’s Duel!”

[spoiler=Chapter 5]

Chapter 5

“Let’s Duel!” everyone said in unison, and they each drew 5

cards.

Mark: 4000/Serene: 4000

Bobby: 4000/Marisa: 4000

“I’ll start this off! Draw!” said Bobby. Bobby Court was a twelve

year old, very enthusiastic boy. “I play X-Head Cannon!”

(ATK: 1800) “End!”

“My turn,” Mark yelled. “Summon Darkfire Soldier #2 in Attack

Mode!” (ATK: 1800) “Set a card!” No one could attack on the

first turn. “End.”

Marisa drew her card. Marisa Edmonson was a, unlike Bobby,

quiet girl. She never raised her hand in class, and never asked

questions. “I summon Happy Lover in Attack Mode,” Marisa

said. (ATK: 800) “Activate a Field Spell. The Sanctuary of the

Sky!” An enormous flying castle appeared above them. “Set a

card facedown. End of turn.”

“Draw!” yelled Serene. “Summon Rescue Cat! My cat can tribute

itself to summon two Crystal Beast Amethyst Cats from my

deck to my field! (ATK: 1200) Rescue Cat disappeared. Serene’s

feline creatures appeared and growled at the inferior Happy

Lover. “End.” Suddenly, both of Serene’s Amethyst Cats

were sent to the Graveyard, and, doing what Crystal Beasts do,

went to the Spell and Trap Card Zone. “My Rescue Cat’s ability

destroys them at the End Phase.” Bobby and Marisa were

puzzled, but Mark knew that more Crystal Beasts in Serene’s

Spell & Trap Card Zone was better for her.

“Back to me!” said Bobby. “Draw!” Bobby smiled ear to ear. “I

play Y-Dragon Head!” Mark cringed. “Now I fuse these two

monsters,” Bobby shouted. “To summon the XY-Dragon

Cannon!” (ATK: 2200) “Attack Serene directly!” The

mechanical dragon released an energy blast. “Aghh!” yelled

Serene.

Mark: 4000/Serene: 1800

Bobby: 4000/Marisa: 4000

“Draw! Sacrifice my Soldier to Summon one of my personal

favorites,” Mark said. “Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch!” The

familiar blazing giant arose on to the field. “Now,” he said.

“Destroy that feeble Happy Lover!” The hapless Happy Lover

was blown away in an inferno. Now she’ll take massive damage,

Mark knew. But it never came. “Mark!” said Serene. “Yeah?”

“Her Sanctuary of the Sky card,” she said. “It prevents her from

taking any damage in a battle involving Fairy-Type monsters!”

“Crap. Should of read the fine print,” Mark said.

“Activate Trap Card,” Marisa interrupted. “Human Wave

Tactics!” It gets worse and worse, Mark thought.

“It allows me to Special Summon one Level 2 or lower Normal

Monster from my deck equal to as many Level 2 or lower

Normal Monsters were destroyed this turn. Which is one!

Summon Mokey Mokey to the field in Attack Mode!”

(ATK: 300) Phew, Mark thought. Finally it’s over. All she did was

summon a stupid Normal Monster worth 300 ATK.

“My turn!” said Marisa. “Draw! Summon another Mokey Mokey

(ATK: 300) to the field in Attack Mode!” Seriously, when is she

gonna summon a monster worth fighting? Marisa read Mark’s

mind, replying, “Play Continuous Spell Card Mokey Mokey

Smackdown!” Oh, God. “Attack Thestalos,” Marisa ordered her

Happy Lover. The little ball of happiness jumped at Thestalos

playfully. The huge monarch smashed the Happy Lover’s face

in. “Activate my facedown,” Mark said. “Mystical Space

Typhoon, destroying your sanctuary!”

Mark: 4000/Serene: 1800

Bobby: 4000/Marisa: 2400 2

“Hmph,” snorted Marisa. “You did some damage, but the result

is still the same!” The Mokey Mokeys started glowing crimson

red. They were getting angry. (Mokey Mokeys ATK 3000 each)

“Mokey Mokey, attack Serene!” Well, I guess that’s it. Serene

thought. The Firestorm Monarch jumped into the blast, giving

his life, shielding Serene from 2400 points of damage. The

other Mokey Mokey smashed into Mark.

“Mark. . .” Serene said. “Why did you do that for me?”

“I can’t win without you, can I?” Mark smiled.

Serene laughed. “I guess not.” She grinned back at Mark.

[spoiler=Chapter 6]

Chapter 6

“It’s my turn!” said Serene.

Mark: 1000/Serene: 1200

Bobby: 4000/Marisa: 2400

“Summon Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus in Attack Mode,”

Serene added. “Equipping it with a Crystal Release card.”

Sapphire ATK: 2600

“Attack Mokey Mokey!”

By now the Mokeys had faded back to its regular attack.

A Pegasus kicked a Mokey Mokey in the face.

Mark: 1000/Serene: 1200

Bobby: 4000/Marisa: 100

It was Bobby’s turn. “Summon. . . . .Z-Metal Tank! Now fuse

them all to summon XYZ Dragon Cannon!” (ATK: 2800) “Attack

Sapphire Pegasus!”

Mark: 1000/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 4000/Marisa: 100

Mark drew, and gritted his teeth. Should he try something he

had never done before? He didn’t know exactly how to, but he

had to. “Activate Monster Reborn,” Mark said. “Special

Summon Thestalos from my Graveyard!” Mark took a deep

breath. “Normal Summon Magna Drago from the hand!” A red

fire dragon appeared. (ATK: 1400)

“Now,” Mark said. “ Take a look at the level of my monsters.”

Thestalos: 6 stars | Magna Drago: 2 stars

“Add ‘em up.” Mark said.

“Yeah?” Bobby laughed. “8. So?”

“So, I can do this! Tribute Both monsters to Synchro Summon

Red Dragon Archfiend!” (ATK: 3000)

“Holy crap,” Bobby gawked.

“Now, since your Dragon Cannon could destroy my monster

with its ability, I will kill it now.” At Mark’s command, the

three-part fusion monster was blown away in a fiery explosion.

Mark: 1000/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 3800/Marisa: 100

“Now, my Red Dragon Archfiend’s ability activates,” Mark

stated. “Destroying Mokey Mokey!” Away went the tofu-like

monster. “That’s good for one turn. End.”

“Draw,” said Marisa. “Mokey Mokey in Defense Mode. End.”

“My turn!” yelled Serene. “Summon Crystal Beast Amber

Mammoth to the field!” (ATK: 1700)

Marisa cringed. “Double attack at Marisa!” Serene said.

Mokey Mokey was destroyed and Marisa took a direct attack.

Mark: 1000/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 3800/Marisa: 0

“I lose . . .” Marisa said, barely audible.

“Marisa and Bobby still have a chance,” Mr. Henderson

said. “If Bobby wins this, they can still go on!”

“Draw,” Bobby said. “Activate Double Summon. Summon

W-Wing Catapult and V-Tiger Jet!”

Mark groaned. Another one? Oh, God.

“Fuse them together to get VW-Tiger Catapult!” (ATK: 2200)

“Now, activate another spell card!” Bobby said. “Monster

Reborn, reviving XYZ-Dragon Cannon.”

Is he gonna- “Fuse both monsters, to get the one, the only,

VWXYZ- Dragon Catapult Cannon!!!!!” (ATK: 3000)

The class was silent as they all gaped at the five monster

machine combination. “Use your effect and remove Red Dragon

Archfiend from play!” Bobby said.

A different-dimension wormhole opened up, sucking in Red

Dragon Archfiend.

“No. . .” Mark uttered.

“Heh,” Bobby sneered. “Dragon Catapult Cannon, (ATK: 3000)

attack Mark directly!”

Serene commanded her Pegasus to block the attack. It

obediently obeyed, and was blown away in the beam.

Mark: 600/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 3800

“My turn. Draw.” Mark said. “One card facedown. End.”

“My Mammoth goes to defense.” Serene said. That’s i-“

“VWXYZ, ATTACK!!!!!!!” Bobby cut her off.

Amber Mammoth was blown away. “End.”

“Now!” Mark yelled. “Activate D.D.R.-Different Dimension

Reincarnation! Discard one card! Bring back Red Dragon

Archfiend!!” (ATK: 3000)

“Again?” Bobby said. “Whatever, I’ll just kill it again.”

“Red Dragon Archfiend, attack!”

“What?” spluttered Bobby.

| Red Dragon Archfiend ATK: 3000 | VWXYZ ATK: 3000 |

Two beams of lightning clashed ferociously. “Heh,” Mark

sneered. “Activate Rush Recklessly!!”

Red Dragon Archfiend ATK: 3700

The stream of fire grew larger, and vanquished the inferior

Beam, blowing away the mechanical dragon.

Mark: 600/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 3100

“My turn!” Serene yelled with confidence. “Summon Amber

Mammoth! Attack!”

Mark: 600/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 1400

“Draw,” said Bobby. “Set a creature. End.”

“Now, Bobby, it’s over! Activate Nobleman of Crossout,

removing your creature from play!”

A soldier appeared, and slashed an X through the card, killing

it.

“Red Dragon Archfiend, finish it!”

An enormous fireball formed in the Dragon’s mouth. He

released it, bashing into Bobby for the win.

Mark: 600/Serene: 1000

Bobby: 0

[spoiler=Chapter 7]

Chapter 7

“And the tag team of Udonis and Sarah beat Kevin and Rene!” After Mark

and Serene’s duel, another duel had taken place.

Udonis was a fifteen-year-old African American, with black dreadlocks.

Sarah was an attractive fourteen year old with blond/brown hair.

“We’re up against them next, you know,” Serene whispered in Mark’s

ear. “Yeah,” he answered.

“We will hold the finals tomorrow!” Mr. Henderson stated. Mark was

bummed and pleased at the same time. He would have to wait, but he

could get some rest.

When Mark walked home, he saw Udonis on the sidewalk ahead of him.

He caught up and said, “Hey,” catching his breath. “That was some duel. I

can’t wait to play against your Lightsworns!”

Udonis smiled. “Thanks.” Mark had reached his house. “Well see ya

tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” Udonis said. “Bye.”

Suddenly, Udonis was shoved to the ground. He scraped his knees up,

but still scrambled to his feet.

A cloaked figure stood behind him, wearing a Duel Disk on his left arm.

It snapped out a deck from one on of its multiple pockets, placing it in

his disk. “ Let’s duel,” it said in a raspy voice.

“Sure,” Udonis answered confidently.

“DUEL!” the both yelled simultaneously.

“How was school, honey?” Mrs. Nguyen asked Mark.

“Great! Tomorrow, I’ll play some more duels!”

Mrs. Nguyen was taken aback. Her son hadn’t been this enthusiastic in,

well, ever.

“Mom, I think I’ll hit the hay early, tonight,” Mark said, headind for his room.

“But Mark, you . . . . .” it was too late. Mark was already secured in his

fortress of solitude.

“No. . . . . .,” Udonis winced. He was dueling the cloaked stranger he had

met right after Mark left him.

Udonis: 500

??????: 8000

“Now, you’re finished,” the cloaked man said. He pulled down his hood,

to reveal Xavier.

“Goldd, ATTACK!”

“Gahhhh!”

Udonis: 0

??????: 8000

Udonis hit the ground unconscious. He never got back up.

When Mark walked to school the next day, he felt refreshed. He had got

a good’s nights sleep last night; he was ready for more duels. But

something wasn’t normal the next day. Everyone was gathered in the

field. There was zero excitement, so Mark was confused. He quietly sat

down.

“What’s going on?” Mark asked the guy nearest him.

The guy was teary, and he looked if he said anything, he would burst

into a fit of tears. “Listen” was all he got out.

Mark looked toward the stage where an elderly man held a book,

speaking. He talked loudly, but softly.

“We are gathered here today, because one of our dedicated students, has, well, passed on.”

Mark’s mind almost blew up. Someone had died?

“We are gathered here today, because of Udonis.”
