MissingNo. We all know what it is. It is a horrible-looking bash of pixels that is also known as the Glitch Pokemon. But does anyone really know WHAT it is? Why it was created? Is this the programers idea of a sick joke, ruining peoples games? Well, it turns out, that research really helps on this topic. I will explain and define who or what MissingNo is...

 

MissingNo- The Name/Background

 

MissingNo. Up top, it says it is number 152 in the Kanto Dex. :shock: Yeah, I am right. MissingNo was a real Pokemon, known before as Missing. The story behind Missing was, after you beat the Elite Four, Missing was created in your hometown and caused havoc everywhere. When you returned and spoke to your mother, she would tell you what happened. Then, you would have to hunt down Missing and capture it. Missing had a few problems to it, though. It had a completly unique move that NO OTHER POKEMON knew. It also was way overpowered, possessing base stats higher than Arceus. This led to the annihlation of Missing. When the programers took Missing out of the game, they changed the name to MissingNo, so if anyone was able to hack it, they would not get the original name. One programer (or a few) forgot to take it out of the game, leading to the Pokemon, MissingNo.

 

MissingNo- The Battle

 

MissingNo has base stats over 150, higher than all 493 Pokemon! This was only one problem with MissingNo. It only contained two moves, Transform and Clone. Clone copied the movesets of any ONE Pokemon on your opponent's team. Transform only copied the one that was at battle. It also had a very different effect, called Error. To this day, no one knows what the Error effect was. When I captured MissingNo and checked its stats, I was amazed and horrified.

It was like a suped-up Shedinja! But, of course, when I tried to use a move, it used Struggle instead and suicided.

 

MissingNo- The Glitch

 

One of the famous glitches was in the RED/BLUE/YELLOW versions of Pokemon. You had to talk to an old man, watch a demonstration of how to catch a Pokemon, and fly to Cinnabar. From there, you must Surf across the edge. This results in finding MissingNo and some 100+ Leveled Pokemon. Why is this the glitch? No one knows. Maybe when the programmers tested MissingNo, they captured it on the water at Cinnabar. When I tried this glitch in Fire Red/Leaf Green, it didn't work at all. When I tried the Ruby/Sapphire glitch for MissingNo, all it did was suck all the water out of Sootopolis. When I used my ARDS to get a MissingNo in Diamond and Pearl, that is when I got solid results. For starters, when I tried healing MissingNo, Nurse Joy went crazy and the game froze. When I tried battling with MissingNo, Clone froze the game and Transform transformed it into a Ditto. No other Pokemon, only a Ditto. When I tried it in Emerald, the game froze and deleted my data. MissingNo really is the error Pokemon.

 

MissingNo- The Search

 

I tried to find more ways to get a MissingNo. I tried using the Walk Through Walls hack on D/P using ARDS. When I went into the grass and found a Pokemon, all that happened was an Unown-like figure came out, used Struggle, suicided and I whited out. I tried many, many methods. No results came up. Although, one method seemed to work presumably well. After I had caught MissingNo, when I beat the Elite Four, it gave me random Pokemon that I used with Japanese names. Weird, huh?

 

MissingNo- The Fault

 

As I have said before, the glitch to MissingNo started at Cinnabar. But what is with the 100+ leveled Pokemon? It turns out that the glitch triggers some fault in the game which makes the Pokemon range from levels 101 to upwards 200. I still have a level 176 Cloyster. This fault in the game could be a defense mechanism or just a fault. Much is still not known about MissingNo. Also, when MissingNo is captured or encounted, the 6th or 7th (not confirmed) item in each pouch of your backpack will become 99. This is great use towards Master Balls and Rare Candys.

 

MissingNo- The Conclusion

 

So, MissingNo WAS meant to be a Pokemon, another legendary, if you will. But when they saw all the faults, they destroyed it. But the remains of MissingNo lingers on till today. So be wary when you see a MissingNo or find a glitch. It just might kill you…

Interesting... MissingNo into Platinum. Looks like the error Pokemon will get its rightful glory. And this will answer questions about the Error effect, the Clone attack and whatnot. Now we have to wait for Japan to give American PKMN Platinum... -_-''

Try to confirm everything in this thread. Cuz I only tested it maybe 4~5 times... But MissingNo should not have been deleted. There should be 494 PKMN right now. Why couldn't they just lower its base stats?

 

PS- I wrote about this topic because it interested me. And put in MissingNo or 'M on Google. Real helpful! =P

I was currently reseaching MissingNo and Bulbapedia has some very good insight, but also some bad insight. For starters, the name MissingNo is not Missing Number. Also, it does not know water gun or sky attack in the RED/BLUE versions. And, it has no type. It is type ???.

 

At Clariex- Hilarious comic! I was laughing for like 2 minutes when I saw that. "Let me in! I will give you infinate of your 6th item! Please!"!!!

Well, excuse me for never testing MissingNo out using the Mew Glitch. But when I used the standard glitch, it never showed up having Water Gun nor Sky Attack. And it was not a WATER and FLYING type. When I use the Mew glitch correctly, I will confirm these attacks.

 

Do half the people even read this. It sounds like you all are just saying "Good Job" and "Epic Win" without even reading any of this stuff. Just saying, no need to flame me. --_--'' ITS MY OPINION!!! =(

MissingNo. wasn't ment to be A Legendary. It is just the results of Gamefreaks Lazyness, as there were going to be more than 151 Pokemon, but they decided to only have 151, but didn't erase the unfinished ones from the games data, thus when you surf on the water strip on Cinnibar that has no pokemon specified to appear, Bum bum bum! Also, I've also researched MissingNo. It does learn Water Gun & sky ttack, as mine did.

NO...

you go to the man that shows you how to catch pokemon, say yes to him once then say no to him once, fly to cinibar island and surf across the side until MissingNo comes up, there is a MissingNo that will freeze your game and one that if you catch it will make the pokemon during battle mirror/backwards (NOTE: THIS IS WHAT HAPPEDED TO ME, THERE ARE VARIOUS RESULTS FOR OTHER GAMES)

Yea, that is the glitch I used. Maybe our games are different, because my game never froze until I took it outta the PC and there is a Mew Glitch. You can use Mew somehow to trigger a battle w/ MissingNo. Maybe that is why MissingNo has Water Gun & Sky Attack. Or maybe our games are just plain different.

 

And at superstarcar- that is just spam, plain old spam.

it is ACTUALLY used to keep things in check and is only obtainable (besides the R/B/Y way) by the use of a cheat or hack' date=' and really only causes problems when met in the wild or caught

Actualy, People have yet to find it in Platinum, butit hasn't been out for long in Japan.

And at Mew101... don't forget that all Pokemon games are different. Maybe mine fell on the floor. Maybe your fell on the floor. But I can say 100% that all of my MissingNo's do not have Water Gun and Sky Attack. They have Clone and Transform. But I will test the Mew glitch out... and Bulbapedia has 1/2 wrong info.

 

And they SHOULD have just lowered the dam base stats. And MissingNo WAS meant to be a legendary. They have a whole story about how it was created and where you find it. Did you read the thread?

thats what I meant, its different for every game

@Mew101: I dont know if theres even AR or cheats to find it for Platnum just yet

but MissingNo (from my knowledge as well as other recources) was put in there as a game check to make sure things dont go screwy, which is actually Ironicly funny
