[spoiler=Chapter 1: Not Dreaming]

It was 2:00am before Steven finally went to sleep, he had been up all night for the past 5 hours preparing his deck for the big Duel Monsters Tournament in the morning. His friends thought it was silly the way he would spend ages creating a deck, but he knew that with every minute, with every hour more and more of his heart went into his deck. That’s what he intended to use to win the tournament; Heart. That’s what always made his friends laugh. They believed Duel Monsters was all about power and heart was a load of rubbish, that’s how Steven always beat them, he used his heart to draw what he always needed to win and the tournament was going to be no different.

When Steven finally fell asleep his dreams became what they always were, him becoming a champion in a major tournament. But this time something was different, when he finally got to the part of his dream where he would lift up his trophy, it went dark. This was no ordinary darkness though, it felt as though it was pressing in on him, as if it was crushing him.

 

"Well this will certainly be one to tell the Grandkids", joked Steven.

 

Suddenly the air started to thin making it harder to breath. Each breath gave a sharp pain in Steven's insides, as if he was being jabbed with hot pokers.

 

"This is starting to feel a little to real", moaned Steven. "I wish I would wake up and stop dreaming such nonsense."

"But this is real you fool", said a voice from the distance.

"Oh great what am I dreaming now?" He thought.

"This is no dream", said the voice as it started to come nearer.

"Oh so I magically teleported myself to a dark room", Steven thought sarcastically.

"Not yourself you mortal fool, I did it".

"And you are", Steven asked to the darkness.

"A person who wants your soul!", said the voice as its owner appeared out of the darkness.

"Right my soul", said Steven. "I’m just going to wake up now and..."

"But you can't wake up because you’re not asleep".

"What?"

"You heard me mortal. You can't wake when your not sleeping. You see mortal, I need power!!"

"Power?"

"Must you repeat me? Like I said I need power and you mortals, though your present world lacks magical forces, there are a few of you who still possess the magic of your ancestors."

"Right? Look pal your a nutcase, but then again you’re inside my head so it doesn't really matter."

"Fool, don't you listen, I'm real, this is real and I'll prove it!"

"How?"

"Quite simple, fore you see mortal you can't be physically hurt in dreams just scared. So if this is a dream my magic can't hurt you just scare you. Understand? So lets put the theory to the test."

"Yeah right… AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

 

Steven doubles over in pain as dark magic courses through him.

 

"You see mortal if this was a dream that would not have hurt."

"I guess?"

"Good!! Now lets move on so I can claim my power. "Now according to you mortals and your ancestor's rules, I can only take your power by defeating you in a duel."

"Nice story pops, but I have no power", said Steven.

"But you do my young friend. Why do you think your so good at your little card game? It's because you possess power that’s hasn't been seen for thousands of years. Power that the ancients used to summon powerful monsters to do their bidding, that’s how your little card game came to be, and you are one of a select few who can conjure these powerful monsters and I don't mean your little holograms, I mean real monsters."

"I see."

"Yes and I have that power as well but not as well as you mortals do, but you don't use it and that’s I came here. I know all about this power yet have a weak amount, while weaklings like you have it all in you yet don't know about it. It makes me sick and that’s why I shall duel and defeat you Steven, yes I know your name, and take your power by stealing your soul."

"Not if I have anything to say about it."

"Oh really?"

"Yes really. I'm an excellent duellist, ask anyone of my friends. You don't stand a chance."

"Would your friends bet their very souls you can defeat me?"

"Why?"

"Because you gave me an idea to spice this duel up besides the pain and torment you shall suffer as your very soul slips away."

"Like what?"

"Like having your friends souls on the line as well as your own."

"No!!"

"Oh yes and just so I'm not rude because I can't take their souls with them knowing, why don't we put them in this duel."

"You mean me and my friends vs. you?"

"Yes and No. Yes they'll be in the duel but they'll be in your deck."

"What?"

"I call upon the spirits. Bring me the souls of Kirsty and Mat, imprison them in their favourite cards and bring them to our realm!!"

 

Purple energy surrounds Unknown as two small, bright lights appear in the darkness and move towards Steven. As they near him, they transform into a Duel Monster’s Deck. Steven quickly catches it before it falls.

 

"What does that mean? What have you done?"

"I've put your friends souls in cards and added them to your deck and look down, I’ve also supplied your Duel Disk, but enough chit-chat let the duel begin."

"But..."

 

[spoiler=Chapter 2: Duel in the Shadows (Part 1: Losing a Friend)]

Steven was all confused about what was happening, it was strange but felt normal at the same time. He still didn't know if this was real or not, but whatever the case he was going to win this duel and save himself and his friends. Steven activates the Duel Disk and places his deck inside.

 

Steven: 4000

Unknown: 4000

 

“So who goes first?”, asks Steven.

“Why don’t I Mortal”?

"Very well. Make your move", orders Steven.

"Very well. I draw and Set a monster."

"Good well stand back!! I draw and summon forth Beaver Warrior (ATK: 1200) in Attack Mode.

 

Steven's Beaver Warrior exploded onto the field , but the way it was moving made it look nothing like a hologram. It breathed and its smell filled Steven's nostrils.

 

"WOW!! That its really real, but that’s not important right now. Go my Beaver!! ATTACK!!

"Fool, Mystical Elf (DEF: 2000) defend."

 

Steven was doubled over with pain as the damage from his Beaver's attack seemed to be appearing inside his body, forcing him to his knees.

 

"AHHHHHH!!!"

"That's what happens when you duel here. The monsters are real, so you as the one who calls them feel their pain, HAA HAA HAA HAA HAA!!"

"Yeah well I'm not finished yet"

 

Steven: 3200

Unknown: 4000

 

"I place 1 card face-down."

 

Steven knew if this guy dared to attack he would be protected by his trap card. He would come around in this duel, his friend's souls hung in the balance. He had to win.

 

"Well if you keep making lame mistakes like that, this duel will been mine", smirked Unknown.

"Don't celebrate just yet."

"Oh really well I draw and call upon Y-Dragon Head (ATK: 1500) in attack mode. But that’s not all, I'll increase his attack with 7 Completed meaning it gains an extra 700 ATK points (ATK: 2200). Now go my shadow creature attack."

"Not so fast I activate Waboku, meaning I take no battle damage and my monster can't be destroyed this turn."

 

Y-Dragon Head opens its jaws and fires a beam of blue electricity at Beaver Warrior, who manages to remain unharmed due to Waboku‘s effect.

 

"You lucked out on that one mortal, but soon, soon you shall fall. I place 1 card face-down."

"Draw. Now come forth Marie the Fallen One (ATK: 1700) attack mode and for that extra boost Axe of Despair."

 

Marie the Fallen One appears on the field in a cloud of dark energy, but the face of Marie was different, it was a face that Steven knew quite well.

 

"Kirsty? So you were telling the truth."

"Yes, your friend Kristy’s soul has been sealed in her Marie the Fallen One and now that you've played it, you've put her at risk."

"NOOO!!"

"Err what’s going on? Last thing I remember was dreaming about ice-cream", mumbled Kirsty. "And what am I wearing?"

"We are in a very, real and very dangerous duel Kirsty."

"What? Who said that?... Steven what’s going on?"

"We are in a duel against some weird nut bar and your soul has been sealed in your favourite card. That good enough for you."

"Your crazy man."

"Your friend is right let me show you. Dark Energy."

 

Dark magic surrounds Unknown and shoots towards Kirsty who is instantly doubled over with pain.

 

"AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

"Kirsty!! Are you all right?"

"Ok that was real."

"Kirsty listen to me, we can get you back to normal if we win. Will you help me?"

"If it means not getting shocked then yes."

"Good, now you listen up you lunatic, my Axe raises Kirtsy's Attack power by 1000 (ATK: 2700), so go Kirsty attack now."

"What ever you say. Hi yaaaa!!"

"You really should pay attention. I activate Covering Fire, meaning my Y-Dragon Head gets the Attack power of one of my other monsters for this battle like my Mystical Elf (ATK: 800) so its Attack increases by 800 (ATK: 3000)."

"But that’s 3000 Attack points!!"

"Yes 3000 points which you just attacked. Meaning Kirsty goes bye-bye to the Graveyard."

"NOOOO!!!"

 

As Kirsty fires a ball of dark energy, Y-Dragon Head fires its own blue electric attack. Both attacks collide in a dazzling display of light as Kirsty’s attack gets ripped right through by Y-Dragon Head’s attack, which hits Kirsty and destroys her.

 

Steven: 2900

Unknown: 4000

 

"Well that’s 1 friend down and 1 to go. Which one shall you sacrifice next?"

"You'll pay for what you did!! Mark my words."

"Its not my fault you played your friend's soul card. Or that you attacked me. You made those choices yourself and that’s what will cause your friends to lose their souls.

"Oh yeah well my turn's not done. I place 1 card face-down on the field and switch Beaver Warrior (DEF: 1500) into defence mode, your move."

"That’s it? That’s all? Ha Ha Ha Ha!! You are too easy, I draw and summon X-Head Cannon (ATK: 1800) in attack mode, now I have 3 monsters to your 1 monster. Do the math I win, go X-Head Cannon ATTACK!!"

"Not so fast go Negate Attack, now your Battle Phase is over. Looks like I'm still in this."

"Keep stalling all you want, I doubt you can beat 2 monsters with 2200 and 1800 ATK points."

"Oh yeah we'll see once you finish."

"Very well, 1 card face-down."

"Good stand back!! I draw and now Marie aka Kirsty’s special ability activates, giving me 200 life points and this will keep happening each time it‘s my Standby Phase.”

 

Steven: 3100

Unknown: 4000

 

“Also now I summon forth Vorse Raider (ATK1900) in attack mode. Now go Vorse Raider attack X-Head Cannon."

 

Vorse Raider lets out a loud roar as it charges towards X-Head Cannon with its axe raised.

 

"Moron!! I knew you would attack X-Head Cannon, its the only card that you probably had a chance of destroying. So activate face-down card Hyper Coat, meaning my X-Head being a member of the VWXYZ family gets an extra 500 attack points (ATK: 2300) and also note my trap is continuous.

"That means my Vorse Raider is done."

"Yes and your Life Points with it."

"AHHHHHHHHH!!"

 

Steven falls to one knee as Vorse Raider’s axe bounces off X-Head Cannon and gets a full blast from X-Head Cannon straight in the chest, completely destroying it.

 

Steven: 2700

Unknown: 4000

 

"Well are you actually going to damage me or not?"

"1 card face-down."

"1 card face-down again? Is that all you're going to do?"

"Just go you freakazoid."

"Very well then, Draw!!" Ahh perfect, time to be rid of your face-down. I play Harpies’ Feather Duster, destroying your face-down. This is what you get for using the same tactics again and again."

 

Steven shields his eyes as powerful winds strike his face, and slice his face down card in two.

 

"Not quite my face-down was Statue of the Wicked which when destroyed activates. Giving me 1 Wicked Token (DEF: 1000), so now I'm still safe."

"But soon you will be defenceless again. Go Y-Dragon Head attack that token and then X-Head Cannon fire on his Beaver."

 

Y-Dragon Head and X-Head Cannon fire on Beaver Warrior and the Wicked Token, shattering them to pieces.

 

"AHHHHHHH!! This isn't good."

"Well, well, looks like you kept yourself alive for 1 more turn, you had better make it count."

"Ok draw. Pot of Greed, so I'll draw 2 new cards then play my Brain Control. If you don't know, Brain Control means I can control 1 of your monsters at the cost of 800 Life Points, but remember I get back 200 Points because of Marie‘s effect."

Unknown: 4000

 

"Then monster I'll choose to control will be Y-Dragon Head due to you Hyper Coat protecting X-Head Cannon from my Spells. Now I'll sacrifice my new Y-Dragon Head to summon my Summoned Skull (ATK: 2500) in attack mode. Now my Skull at...AHHHH!! What just happened?"

"Well you fool, I also imprisoned your soul in your favourite card, but due to the fact I also needed you to duel against as well, I split your soul in two. One piece in you, one piece in your Summoned Skull. Luckily for you the spell kept your soul whole for as long as you didn't play your card, but when you played your card you caused the spell to split you and the reason you feel pain is because even the strongest of duellists can't duel in the shadows with only half a soul. I believe the longest with half a soul was 15 minutes before the person collapsed from the pressure and pain."

"OHHH!! Now you tell me, well it doesn't matter I’ll win before that happens and reclaim Kirsty's soul at the same time."

"You may be human but I love the fight in you. It will make it even more fun when I rob you of your soul."

"We'll see about that. Summoned Skull... or myself... or... what ever just attack now with Lightning Strike, destroy X-Head Cannon."

 

Summoned Skull raises its arms as a dark cloud of thunder appears overhead, which sends a bolt of lightning down towards it. As the lightning reaches Skull it points its arms at X-Head Cannon causing the lightning to fire straight and it. X-Head Cannon explodes in a blast of lightning causing Unknown to finally take damage.

 

Steven: 2100

Unknown: 3800

 

"Yes I’m back in the game."

"Enjoy your celebration while it lasts mortal. My power far exceeds yours."

"Well I have 1 card left in my hand so I think I'll play it, face-down that is."

"Your come back ends now, draw. I play Pot of Greed which lets me draw 2 new cards, then I'll play not 1 but 2 Premature Burials, meaning by giving 800 points for each card, I can bring back 2 monsters from the graveyard like Y-Dragon Head and X-Head Cannon."

"Your monsters may be strong but they‘re not strong enough."

 

Steven: 2100

Unknown: 2200

 

"Then watch this!! Now I'll summon Z-Metal Tank (ATK: 1500) in attack mode, but that’s not the end of my move. I'll also remove all my monsters from play to summon the powerful, unstoppable, XYZ Dragon Cannon (ATK: 2800) in Attack mode.”

 

All 3 monsters stack on top of each other, connecting together to combine their powers into one unstoppable force.

 

“Now I send 1 card from my hand to the graveyard to destroy your face-down card."

"No my Mirror Force."

"Its gone and soon your Skull will join it, Dragon Cannon attack Summoned Skull."

"AHHHHHH!!"

 

Dragon Cannon charges up energy on all it’s available weapons and fires at Summoned Skull, blasting a hole right through its chest and causing it to fall to the ground where it shatters to pieces.

 

Steven: 1800

Unknown: 2200

 

"Also note that because Summoned Skull contained a piece of your soul, you lose even more energy, meaning this duel will be over soon one way or another."

"I'm still standing aren't I?"

"Barely you fool, why don't you just accept defeat?"

"Because I never quit and since you have no more cards left to play it's my turn."

 

[spoiler=Chapter 3: Duel in the Shadows (Part 2: Another Friend Gone)]

"Give up you fool, its no use the duel is mine."

"Never, draw!! I summon Elemental Hero Bubbleman (ATK: 800) in attack mode and take another 200 Life Points."

 

Steven: 2000

Unknown: 2200

 

Bubbleman arrives on the field in a shower of bubbles, arm gun pointed straight at Unknown‘s face.

 

"And what's he supposed to do? He has only 800 ATK points, that’s not enough to damage my Dragon Cannon."

"I know, but Bubbleman does let me draw 2 new cards because I have no other cards in my hand or on the field."

"2 cards, oh no I'm shaking."

"You should be because I drew Clayman (ATK: 800) and Polymerization, meaning Clayman and Bubbleman can fuse to form Elemental Hero Mudballman (DEF: 3000) in Defence mode and with 3000 DEF points your Dragon Cannon can barely scratch him."

 

As Mudballman appears on the field, it quickly curls into a ball to protect itself.

 

"You little weakling that won't stop me, I draw and play 1 card face-down."

"Good now I can move, I draw and play the Spell card Shield & Sword. This switches every monster on the fields Attack with their Defence until the end of the turn. So your Mystical Elf is 2000 ATK and 800 DEF and Dragon Cannon is 2600 ATK and 2800 DEF. While my Mudballman is 3000 ATK and 1900 DEF."

"WHAT?"

"You heard me now I switch my Mudballman to attack mode. Go Mudballman destroy XYZ Dragon Cannon."

 

Mudballman rises up and slams its fist into XYZ Dragon Cannon, blasting it into a million pieces.

 

"Noooo!! How could a weak mortal like you destroy my most powerful card?"

 

Steven: 2000

Unknown: 1800

 

"Looks like the Life Point gap is now in my favour, your move."

"That will soon change. I draw and sacrifice my Mystical Elf to summon my Lesser Fiend (ATK: 2100), now attack my beast!! Destroy Mudballman and because Shield & Sword's effect is gone your monster's ATK reduces to its original 1900."

"AHHHHH!! No big deal... I... can...still...fi...fi...fight..on."

 

Steven: 1800

Unknown: 1800

 

"You are so annoying, also I should add that your Mudballman gets removed from play by my Lesser Fiend."

"Oh goody more great news. Anyway its my move so stand back, I draw and play the Spell card Swords of Revealing Light, which stops your attacks for 3 turns."

"Stop stalling for time, never in this duel have you seen me need to stall. You think 3 turns is going to save you, don't make me laugh, no card in your deck can save you."

"Prove it then."

"As you wish mortal. I draw and summon Spear Dragon (ATK: 1900), now you have 2 monsters to deal with and none of your own."

"Well watch out. I draw and Set 1 monster on the field, that’s all."

"What good will that do you? Are you trying to lose on purpose? Anyway I draw and summon my Gemini Elf (ATK: 1900), soon I'll have an army of monsters and you will be destroyed."

"Not on my watch because I draw and Flip Summon my Fiber Jar."

"What's a Fiber Jar?"

"With this card all cards on the field, in our hands and in the graveyard get added to our decks, then we draw 5 new cards."

"What? But that means you just reset the field."

"Exactly and Kirsty's back from the graveyard which is worth losing the Life Point boost I was receiving."

 

Steven: 2400

Unknown: 1800

 

Steven looked down at his new hand, one of the cards was Mat's Sparkman. Was Mat's soul trapped in here just like Kirsty was with her Marie the Fallen One?

"Hmm its risky but its the only monster I have, I summon Sparkman (ATK1600) to the field."

 

Electric arcs descend from above as Sparkman arrives on the battlefield.

 

"So your gambling with your friends lives even after what happened last time. How sad."

"Not as sad as your going to be soon."

Mat blinked, last thing he remembered was dreaming about football, then his dream going dark and now he was looking at some weird guy in robes talking to someone. Someone that sounded like his friend Steven.

"What kind of dream is this?" moaned Mat.

"Well Mat its a dream where your Sparkman and I'm using you in my deck."

"Wow some imagination I have."

"Err...yeah imagination...that's it."

"You would really lie to your best friend even with the fact he could lose his soul forever."

"He won't lose his soul, I got Kirsty back because of my Fiber Jar and if Mat should fall I'll get him back too."

"Oh is that so?"

"Yeah. Now Mat listen to me, use the power of Sparkman and attack his Life Points directly with Static Shock Wave."

"Ok!! Static Shock Wave."

 

Mat fires a blast of electricity at Unknown who barely winces as he is struck.

 

"Mmmmmmm!! Is that all you've got."

 

Steven: 1800

Unknown: 200

 

"Why can't you at least flinch?"

"Because I’m not weak like you."

"Oh yeah 1 card face-down."

"You really should try harder. I draw and summon V-Tiger Jet (ATK: 1600) and though it has the same ATK as your Sparkman now, if combined with my 7 Completed it gains 700 ATK points (ATK: 2300), so now V-Tiger Jet attack that weakling now. HA HA HA HA looks like Mat goes bye bye."

"Not if I can help it, go Spellbinding Circle, freeze his monster."

 

The Spellbinding Circle surrounds V-Tiger Jet, stopping it dead in its tracks before it could launch its attack.

 

"Thanks man that was close."

"No problem."

"Once again you resort to stalling, you can't win this duel so just save it."

"Never."

"Then I’ll just have to do this, I activate Ookazi, damaging you directly by 800 points.

"AHHH!!"

"Steven are you ok?"

"Yes, but I've got to keep fighting... for yours' and Kirsty's sake."

 

Steven: 1000

Unknown: 200

 

"Now we're nearly even mortal. Soon it will be all over, 1 card face-down."

"Not as long as my friends are counting on me. I draw and play 1 card face-down, then I’ll play Emergency Provisions and send my face-down to the graveyard to gain 1000 Life Points.

 

Steven: 2000

Unknown: 200

 

"But that’s not all I'll do because my face-down was Statue of the Wicked, so just like last time I get a Wicked Token (DEF: 1000) and then I'll sacrifice my token to summon my Skull Archfiend of Lightning (ATK: 2500), now my Archfiend attack and wipe out his Life Points."

"I don't think so mortal my trap card is a card you brought back with your Fiber Jar, my Hyper Coat meaning V-Tiger Jet gains 500 ATK points (ATK: 2800), so you just messed up again."

 

Skull Archfiend charges up and fires bolts of lightning at V-Tiger Jet, but they bounce off and return back towards Skull Archfiend, destroying it completely.

 

Steven: 1700

Unknown: 200

 

"Well the duel is still not over."

"We'll see about that you fool. I draw and activate Tribute to the Doomed, you know what that means."

"Please don't do it."

"What's that card do Steven?"

"I send my Limiter Removal in my hand to the graveyard to destroy your Sparkman aka your best friend Mat."

"NOOOO!!"

"AHHHHHH!!"

 

Bandages wrap around Mat and drag him down into the darkness covering the ground.

 

"Ha Ha Ha. That was so much fun."

"You'll pay dearly for that one, mark my words I will win this duel and me, Mat and Kirsty will all get out of here. Besides you have no more cards to play meaning its my move and I'll draw to Set 1 monster in defence mode."

"Well I draw and play my Spell card that you brought back to my deck, Pot of Greed, so I draw 2 cards then activate Mystik Wok. If you don't know what it is fool, it lets me sacrifice my V-Tiger Jet and add either his ATK or DEF to my Life Points. That means I gain 2800 Life Points.

 

Steven: 1700

Unknown: 3000

 

"What? Now you've got back nearly all your Life Points!"

"Yes so just submit to me now."

"Never, finish your move."

"Very well then mortal, I summon W-Wing Catapult (ATK: 1300) to destroy your defence monster, go my beast attack."

"Defend Big Shield Gardna." (DEF: 2600)

"What no, now I lose Life Points."

 

As W-Wing Catapult fires its missiles at Big Shield Gardna, they deflect off him and fly into the distance.

 

Steven: 1700

Unknown: 1700

 

"Yeah it hurts doesn't it?"

"You may currently have the edge but I still have the psychological edge."

"How?"

"Cause I have your friend's soul. Do you want to hear his screams of pain?"

"Do you want to shut up and let me have my turn?"

"Yes not that it will matter. This duel is mine and you know it."

"We'll see, its my turn."
