「SUG」 Chat Box

This is just a suggestion for a chat box. It's the same as a face book. Like someone invites you then he can talk by a button or so. You see PM take a pretty long period of time. A chat box could take less. So if your supporting or have anything to add please do.

Peace

a chatroom with rooms perhaps?

I'm sure YCMaker can do that =P

You can actually get a free (and it's quality of how much it costs) chat box that is very VERY simple to install here. It shows up at the bottom of your page. The best bet would be to set up a pop up chat box rather than an embedded one so that it would just be a little link at the very bottome of the page that says "Pop Up My CBox".

Ugh. I was wondering how long it would take before chatboxes reached YCM. Admittedly, it was a good long time, but all good things must come to an end, I suppose.

Chatboxes are fast. Too fast. Their transfers are instantaneous. More often than not, by the time you're done typing a response to something, said response is obsolete. If they must exist on their own, very well. But on forums...

What I'm mainly worried about (outside my aversion to chatboxes) is overlap. Forums aren't nearly as fast as chatboxes, which I find a blessing because it allows time for grammatical and factual correctness. Chatboxes... not so much. No way to edit responses, you don't have time for grammar more often than not, and you can't leave the computer until you have nothing else to say or you'll be forgotten.

What I'm worried about is that members who frequently use the chatbox will either forget about the forums altogether, or take their conduct from the chatbox to the forum (double-posting, horrible grammar, etc.). Believe me, when the worlds of chatbox and forum cross, the result isn't pretty. And it's deceptively easy to let it happen.

Hence, I am extremely averse to a forum because a.) forum activity would drop, b.) Polls would die (possibly General), and c.) members would start treating the forum more and more like a chatbox. Others may share different views, but I would like to ensure awareness of these setbacks prior to the installation of such an addition.

With all due respect,

I'd rather say that YCM should get a IRC chat instead of a Shoutbox, if that's what you people are referring to. I believe it would cut down on the spam topics that ask stupid questions, and anything that does that is godblessed.

It'll also cut down on the normal topics that ask good questions, and anything that does that is forsaken.

I dont support' date=' use MSN, AIM etc[/quote']

An excellent point. Enough purely chat sites exist on the Net. We don't need chat here too, we're a forum.

Some don't have MSN or Yahoo. Some have AOL. And my point is that members could get to know each other more than they do now. You see it won't make anything go down. Someone would just drop a message and go when he comes back it's there ;) Or I was thinking of doing like "Face Book" a box where you only chat with the people that you or they invited. So either way it's good. You can chat on YCM rather than asking for emails, etc.

with a site with countless numbers of members and several hundred members active at once at all times, it would be an incapability to create a shoutbox, IF MyBB has a shoutbox option...

so.. yeah, thats a no..

EDIT: That would also completely change the focus from posts, and the forum would die due to the lack of posting itself, for the shoutbox

Oh so you're saying that the members will stay all day looking at the chat box and writing? And not anyone is getting what I'm talking about. This "chat box" means like the Face book chat box. You have a who's online list and you have the people that can talk to you. Like they invited you or you invited them.
