The Slime Lord
I'll tell you one thing; graphics DO NOT make a video game a great video game. They're merely a bonus. That is all. (Besides, they won't even be as great two years after the game is released anyway). Storyline, characters (more specifically, character development, but that might as well go in with storyline), music, voice acting (if any), and the controls are all important. Also, actually getting the game in a language that you can read is always a plus.
VainZiler
Graphics, don't matter to me. A game could look like it was made on the Comadore 64 and it can still be fun. Story, to me, is a major part of what makes a great game for me. If I can't get into the games story, I can't enjoy it. The second has to be the games controls and how it's played. I want a game that offers tight controls, and takes a mental challenge, most of the time. The music is a sub-important part of the game. If a game has shitty music, and you have to deal with it just so you can listen to the voice acting, then it can be an annoyance. However, if the game has subtitles, or no voice acting, you can simply mute the game and listen to other music. Next is the games coding. Being a game programmer myself, I've come to realize how tedious, yet at the same time, simplistic coding is. Granted, it could just be due to the engine I use for the current title I'm working on, but with the exception of the Playstation 3, game coding isn't hard. So when I see an overly buggy game, or a game with so many collision errors and clipping, it sickens me a bit. Granted, it's next to impossible to make a flawlessly working game, but some games, push it.
Marisa Kirisame-ze
I like free gameplay, like you get to just run around and you don';t always have to follow the story line one after another....I never really cared for graphics, look at most of the DS games, they don't have great graphics, but the DS is awsome anyway!! ^^ Like Naruto Path of The Ninja 1, it had sucky graphics, but it was fun, and now they are making Naruto Paath of The Ninja 2 with the same graphics. Tkill93
It depends on the game. A game with a bad story can still be great, a game with bad graphics can be great. But an important thing to me is good online and good online support. A main game is fun for a week or two, but online is what keeps me hooked :/
Marisa Kirisame-ze
I like games with LONG story lines because then it doesn't take you one day to finish. Games should always last lond and forever. Like Super Smash Bros. I never stopped playing that game, it is still very fun even after you unlock everything! ^^

Minus the time restrictions on various unlockables, I can go through and get the majority of things in Melee for example within a day.
Destructor
What I like about some games is customization ex: Star Wars KoTOR allows you to customize lightsaber, character, and what side your on
speznats
you said you like free play like in grand theft auto and metal gear solid 3:snake eater.i also like a long story line if doesn't take me more than 60+ man hours it isn't worth my time to play it at all.the thing is i like games that are very well made for online....well because split screen gets boring after a while.but i still like story, plot, and well rounded controls! i only want to have to remember one set of controls wen i play the game i don't want to have game designers rethink the wheel wen it comes to online controls.there also has to be an element of deference what would make me want to play online if it was the same experience as single player and there has to be an element of personalization like call of duty 4 weapon classes. what makes my guy deferent form all the others playing. Marisa Kirisame-ze
I LOVE customization! I love in Tony Hawk Underground 2 (which is an old game now), that you could make skate parks, your own skater, your own graphity mark...that was awsome! ^^

I'd rather have a shortish story than some unnecessarily long game filled with a bunch of filler and stuff. (Oh yeah, side-quests ≠ filler. Most of the time.) Yeah, I guess you are right....But to me, when I finish a video game's story line, I never play it again (inless it is like a Naruto game or Super Smash Bros Brawl game where you can battle even after the game is over). The Slime Lord
Which is why replay bonuses are also a good thing. Usually, they add stuff like extra moves/attacks, secret dungeons and stuff, and other little things. It also helps if the storyline can be slightly altered every time you play through it. Like in Tales of Symphonia. You can build up relationships with characters in your party, or even have one betray you forcing you to kill them. speznats
yet again time has uncovered the ancient question long or short...i personally like long.but i don't like. wen there's a kink in the story intentionally it just gets outrageous after about the third time have to play you way out of that same spot over and over again.and i'm going to bring up a subject that has not bean talked about so fardifficulty i am i pretty good gamer my self but i don't like it wen one particular part is so hard you have to play it 30 times just to figure out what's going on and W.T.F. am i suppose to do. so over all it takes about 50 try's to do it. it just stupid wen you have to do something like that... Pikachu
it really depends but lets look at your structure: Graphics: I recommend 3-D no matter what. more realistic, the better. enviroment colors, props etc. is a mustStoryline: Well, only for story mode. Some are actually acting, others are just your characters moving around with subtitles. love need for speed's carbon acting :)The Setting: Yet again depends. If it's in a city i except LOTS of detail. IF in a virtual world, even more :) Character Design: Most important. Your character looks like a wooden mutant = failure realistic = epic win Background Music: Hmmm.....needs to suit the game (eg. war games drums, racing some competition fast music etc.)meh
v8561v
For me, the most important are the gameplat and the storyline.I don't care much about music, but I like it a lot.Well, I don't know. What I had to say I said.
