Why does the OCG and TCG banlist affect the way you make yugioh custom cards?

This is because the OCG and TCG have different ban lists.  If a card is banned or limited  in the OCG and/or TCG, you want to steer clear of that card when you want to make your archetype. If a card is semi-limited, you could try toning that card down for your archetype.  Unlimited cards should be used for the archetype because these cards in any way, do NOT break the yugioh card game as a whole.

The banlist keeps changing and if your cards can withstand those changes as the banlist changes, this shows good archetype design.

Let's look at an example - Red-eyes Dark Dragoon is limited in the TCG and unlimited in the OCG.  The problem stems in how easy summonable it is (to cheat out).  Plus Dragons have a wide variety of support.

Another example is Marauding Captain - all it does is Summon a Level 4 or lower monster from your hand.  Even when it has a HOPT you have to go -2 in card advantage, which means you lose 2 resources when you Summon him.

A great example is Forbidden Droplet.  It's a staple in many going 2nd decks, but its usage varies.  If you want it to not respond to anything, you must give up 3 different card types (Monster, Spell, and Trap) from your hand or field by sending them to the GY going -3 in card advantage.  This is also very useful for setting up the GY, meaning if those cards have GY effects, they're ready to be utilized.  In other words, it a staple card that doesn't work for every deck.

Now why is this important?

This is because the banlist serves as a guide on what to make for your yugioh custom cards (Unlimited and possibly Semi-Limited) and what not to use (Limited or Forbidden).  It also serves as a guide on how to make balanced yugioh custom cards according to the TCG/OCG banlists.

To avoid the banlist, you should put Hard once per turns on your cards.

  • You can only use this effect of 'X' once per turn.
  • You can only use each effect of 'X' once per turn.
  • You can only use 1 'X' effect per turn, and only once that turn.
  • You can only activate 1 'X' per turn (for Spell/Traps)
