~| Custom Spell/Trap Symbol Tutorial |~

Recommended Posts

I've had a bunch of people asking me about how I added the custom symbols to my Push Spells and Cross Traps, so I decided I'd just make a tutorial (with pictures :D) rather than explain it to all of them. Here it is in 8 easy steps:

This tutorial uses Paint.Net which is free to download and use from here. It is possible to do this in other programs, and shouldn’t be too hard to follow if using a different program.

Step 1: Make your card like you normally do. In the type area, use a symbol from the card maker as a placeholder (I use the Continuous symbol since that’s what I altered to make my 2 custom symbols).

Step 5: Drag your custom symbol over the symbol placeholder and move it around until it looks good. Then, save your template as a .PNG file. If it asks you to flatten the layers, do it.

Adding the Symbol in the Future: To add the symbol to cards from now on, just go back to Step 6 of this tutorial and follow it from there to the end.

If you have any questions, or if something is unclear, feel free to let me know so I can smooth it out ^_^

nice tut man!

I saw this in the help section and got interested, but when I came back to see it it vanished! Oh well, I found it here. ^_^

If I decide to make a new type, sure I will use this process. ^_^

Pretty cool. ;)

I understand it' date=' but it's a very basic but good tutorial, like Sanji's Sub-type Tut.

Maybe next time you can show us how you made the Symbols?[/size']

Thanks :D

Yeah, I meant it to be similar to Sanji's tut, but about this instead of types.

Lol, that was just kinda random inspiration as I was making them. It'd be hard to show a step-by-step process of that :P

Lol, thanks dk ^_^

Sorry about that, I decided it belonged here rather than there ;)

I'm glad I could make something you can use :D

Shucks. Well maybe if you'd stop being so lazy' date=' you could show us how. :O[/size']

Lol, lazy huh? If I was lazy, would I have taken the time to make all the screenshots for this tutorial? I think not :P. And, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that it's really just sit down, erase some of the current template, add some flare to it, and presto! you've got your symbol. I would be happy to make a symbol for anyone who can't figure out how to do it themselves.

Well fine.

But could you go more into detail about flare?

Well, just kinda draw whatever comes to you. If it doesn't look good, just erase it and start over. It took me half a dozen tries to get the Push symbol to my liking, and 3 or 4 tries to get the Cross one good.

what kind of program you use to design the custom system?

I also made the symbol in Paint.Net' date=' but I zoomed it to like 600% so I could see it better :P

I could probably design the custom symbol in Paint, and it's definately easier just to copy/paste it in Paint.

Edit: Wow, I haven't done pixel art for ages >_>

Lol, pixel art can be fun ;). As for Paint, I find Paint.Net easier to work with, but that may just be personal taste :P

This can work better with Photoshop. If you define that paste-and move to the right place as an Action' date=' then just with one click you can change symbols :D

Lol, well I'm new to Photoshop and haven't learned the ins and outs of everything yet. Thanks for the tip, though. It's definitely worth researching ^_^

  • 3 weeks later...

excellent! i always wondered how you do it...

i think something like this might also work for removing "Effect" from Monster Cards with unique sub-types' date=' yeah...?

Thanks! Now you know ;)

Yes, the two processes are indeed very similar. I do believe Haruno Sakura/Sanji the Perverse/whatever his current name is made a tutorial for that, otherwise I would have included it in this one.

Can i use these hvb1x2.gif2cfqjo4.gif

Well, that depends on what you mean by "use". If you want to use them as a base to make your own symbol from, that's totally fine. If you want to use them on cards as they are, then you'll have to PM me the card(s) so I can check it/them over before you post them.

I am now going to embarrass myself by being absolutely horrible at pixel art.

Edit: Oh yeah, this tutorial is just about moving things around, and not how to make symbols. I must've forgotten to mention that.
