Clown In The Box

Hey there,

after returning to playing more Yuigoh again recently and really enjoying the new Evil Eye support, I felt like giving custom cards another shot and came up with this Bickuribox themed boss monster. I always loved unique effects like those of Fabled Unicore, that make you play around something, that's usually not highly valued in the game, as managing your hand size. So you might notice a certain resemblance here. I think the Jack-In-A-Box theme has alot of potential, as it embodies a jumpscare attack aswell as a dodgy spring. I tried to include as much of all of these aspects into a card without making it a textwall or overpowered while keeping it on a standalone design  theory, so you guys can easily get a feel for the concept without reading through a bunch of cards first.

I hereby present to you

The Clown In A Box

Rank 5
DARK / Machine / Effect
ATK 2150 / DEF 1450

2 Level 5 monsters2 Level 5 monsters
While you and your opponent control the same amount of Spell & Trap cards, this card is unaffected by your opponent's card effects, also each time your opponent Special Summons a monster(s), it loses 1000 ATK. While this card has material, you can activate a Quick-Play Spell Card or a Trap Card from your hand during your opponent's turn by detaching 1 material from this card at activation.

The idea is, that the monster jumpscares opponent's monsters and reduces their ATK. The opponent should feel like walking into an old attic and finding this, when all of a sudden it springs into their face, activating a card from hand that they could not have seen coming. Also by managing the timing ( referenced by the amount of Spell/Traps ) it dodges attacks while bouncing back and forth, so it's unaffected while the balance is intact.

I hope I can inspire someone with this concept and am happy about any feedback. Do you think the ability to activate cards from the hand should be limited to specific cards like in Magic Muskets and I should build an entire archetype around this?

The idea is interesting, but I don't really understand how this is related to Bickuribox aside from being a jack-in-the-box. Based on Bickuribox's materials, Dream Clown and Crass Clown, this card felt like it should be something related to changing battle positions.

You're right, I was thinking about putting this card into the clown theme and playing with a Battle Position based mechanic at first, but I coudn't find a way to integrate my design goals into that, while keeping it standalone and simple. It was originally designed to be rank 7 and take 2 non-effect monsters ( to play with Bickuribox and some other card I can't remember ).
I think my initial thought on it was to affect all of your opponent's monsters that share the same Battle Position with the Clown In A Box and either change their ATK or negate their effects or something. I dropped that idea because I felt like anything but negating the opponent's monsters would be pretty weak due to the fact that it's not easy to change battle positions as quick effect multiple times per turn and I just can't stand another boring boss monster that simply negates everything. Anyhow I'm relatively satisfied with how the effects turned out in the end, even though the card's mechanics don't fit the "Clown Archetype", as I initially intended when I first had the idea for this card some years ago.

I really enjoyed playing around with this card, so I included two more cards to play along with.

Self-Sustaining Mecha Unit
Level 5 DARK
Machine / Effect
ATK 1950 / DEF 950

If you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). (Quick Effect): You can banish this card; place 1 "Spring Upgrade" from your Deck face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone. If a Level 5 monster is Special Summoned to your field while this card is banished: You can Special Summon this card. You can only use each effect of "Self-Sustaining Mecha Unit" once per turn.

Spring Upgrade
Continuous Trap Card

You can target 1 face-up Xyz Monster you control; return this face-up card to the hand and if you do, attach 1 card from your hand to it as material. During the Standby Phase, if you and your opponent control the same amount of Spell/Trap Cards: Xyz monsters you control gain 500 ATK. If this card is detached from an Xyz monster to activate that monster's effect: You can destroy 1 Spell/Trap card on the field. You can only use each effect of "Spring Upgrade" once per turn.
