GFX Guide: Rating Pieces 101

Fact: you cannot rate tags, LP's or anything else for that matter. Tags and everything else also related is ART, you don't go and say to someone "i like your painting, not your best but i like it 8/10". Art is seen differently by deferent people and your rating of say 8/10 might not be the same as someone else who in his opinion it deserves maybe 4/10 and someone else may say 10/10. Point is art is art and it isn't something that can be measured in a standard measure unit using a standard method which means you do not say to someone Art "it's nice 4/10" or "not bad... 13.65/14.23" cause it just proves your stupid, you lack common sense and/or you just gave a random number in a hurry to raise your post count in a futile attempt to raise your post count so you can show off as an active person but you should really show off that you are a stupid person.

Now lets start, I'm really pissed and really really annoyed with the level of GFX on the site. Now i can tolerate bad sigs cause we all have done some at our time of Graphic designing but what i really can't tolerate is stupid, pointless, annoying, ignorant and unrelated comments at peoples work so I'm here to show you what is GFX all about and how to rate and help both you and other people when looking at there work and rating.

Let's start with something simple at first, here is what i call a bad banner. This was made a long time ago so forgive it's suckiness.

What you must do is give him tips to improve his work like

[list']

* Use only one render

* Improve his usage of fonts

* Use the smudge and brush tool

* encourage them to try harder

Also if you feel your rating might be harsh don't rate it just give helpful comments. Sometimes your rating might hurt their feeling.

Now we go on to these, this are good banners but really, they can be way way better then what they are right now. Now you may rate but again i dont think you should rate harsh as they are still learning and using new tricks. What i suggest you do is give them tips and give them a rating above 5 but not really above 8. When you rate such stuff you should tell them what they should use and what they used wrong.

All rights to Lord Obito

So here you can say that truth, but don't try being rude or harsh while giving a rating or giving help as they will ignore it and that eventually wont help improve them at all but they might oppose the fact like this.

This is good' date=' but could have been way way better. USE C4D's

[/quote']

No thanks' date=' i like it the way it is.

[/quote']

NO NO NO

YOU SHOULD USE C4D

Now and i will prove it' date=' i will never use C4D's

[/quote']

Now as you see the Artist will feel offended or being made fun off and so he will not use C4D's. That is not good, true not all tags need C4D's like Vector tags but leave that. Point is that he will stop doing something which will help him just to prove his point of view or to get back at the person whom he feels has offended him.

Now we go to very good tags but there is a thing or two that would have made this better then what it is. lets use this as an example.

cyberassasincopy.png

Now this is a very good piece but it has some problems. Now here are some examples, good and bad ratings and i will let you see them and then with the knowledge you have so far you should see which comments are good and which comments are bad.

OMG.

This is amazing.

Left side is a bit bland and the text could be placed there as it's current placement isn't really complimenting it and would fill up the empty space.

Meh... i don't really like this. Not your best.

7.3/10

Nice one' date=' text could have gone somewhere else but good tag nonetheless man.

[/quote']

Now check which are good and which are bad. Now check the spoiler for the correct answers.
Good Comments

# 2 and # 4

Bad Comments

#1 and #3

So when you rate piece's like this what you have to do is spot mistakes but not make a big deal out of them, just point them out and advice the artist to fix the problem. Remember not to make a big deal of it and insult the artist when it is not necessary at all. Remember that if the tag is good and that there are small problems you shouldn't make a fuss out of it as people will lose your respect due to such behavior.

Now here are some Do's and Dont's about what you have to do when you rate.

Do's

  • * Try mentioning the good stuff to make people proud of there work
    * Tell the artist if he made a good use of a resource or a difficult render
    * Praise the artist if the overall look of the sig was good
    * Praise the artist if the piece has a good flow or depth
    * Give the artist tips on how to improve but don't say it as if it's a big deal

Dont's

  • * Never embarrass or humiliate someone in public for their work
    * Never give a very low rating and say "Epic Fail" or "lrn2gfx" if it's bad.
    * Don't point out the mistakes of someone if they most probably wouldn't understand it
    * Never ever rate a gift (gyft), a gift is supposed to be a thank you from someone to someone else and it isn't polite to tell them "not your best 6/10" or "bad font" because the person has worked really hard on it to give it to someone. You don't say to someone who gives a gift to his friend on his birthday "meh.. i don't like the gift" because it's not yours and it isn't your business.
    * Ok Faint, here it is. Kids, never speak such fail. never ever

Hioco I don't even understand your' date=' it's sh**! Some random Abstract lines and some scanlines? WTF! Cyber, you're sh** @ GFX too, so you really don't make much to say.
[/quote']

I hope this guide has taught you something, gosh i never wrote this much. I would like to thank Lord Obito for the banner he made and hope he lets me keep it. I would also like to thank Sanji for his support and allowing me to post this in the showcase section.. Now i will end with this, start rating properly and this thread isn't rateabale Kizzi so don't sweat it. Oh and Sanji i believe you should sticky this.

Very Nice Guide Altair. You have described in a nutshell why I dislike the GFX Section. The smallest mistake and you hear the same old repetitive Insults. I swear it's a Copy/Paste job at times. No wonder most peole, (Myself Included) gave up on GFX. If it was more friendly around there I would make some things. Also I hate the way people are so full of themselves. "Look at me! I'm the king of GFX! All of you n00bs fail!" I am sick and F'ing tired of it......

0/10, this thread sucks.

Also, say something about the owners not being shy about using tuts, resources, and GOOGLE if they receive "OMG FAIL" ratings. It must be for a reason, but sometimes it's too many to put into words. Many tuts cover the basic mistakes that are obvious to anyone that's experienced with GFX and/or has read a bunch of basic tuts.

You're one of the main people who is ripping the GFX Section apart so don't come with "This Thread sucks" It doesn't matter if it takes 3-4 lines to explain what the Owner of the Sig is doing wrong, you should do it for them instead of "OMG! This Sig Sucks! MEGA FAIL!"
