Winged Roc of New Life (The Early Bird Gets the Branded Worm)

I'm back for the giving of Thanks, folks! And you know what Monster Type that everyone's always thankful to see?

Fairies.

Hang on, this man named Aluber's handing me a piece of paper.

Anyhoo, I like doing stuff with retrains of monsters, and have for a while. Breathing new life into an old vanilla reject has basically been my game plan for handling desserts since 2020, and no matter how many uncomfortable stares it gets around the dinner table, you have to admit it's great on the lungs.

Also the brain, especially considering that there's so many stories told in the italicized boxes of olden Yugioh, ones that can be beautifully enhanced by the right new coat of meta-shifting pringle-bordered paragraphs.

Like this card, for example. Fairies and Fusion Summoning have gotten a rather hasty marriage of convenience due to Despia, the Albaz-Dragon spamming archetype that everyone loves! (Aluber whispers in my ear again) We regret to inform you that Master Duel has had this for two months now and if not for a different clan of negation-happy birbs, this sentence would have gotten me demonetized, castigated, and probably run out of town with sharp pointy and burny things.

Still, taking that purple-spamming side of the Fairy game to new heights is something I wanted to pursue for quite some time. And given that the ceiling for LIGHT Fairies to every be included in Despia is 'provide more than a milled Despian Tragedy does', I had my work cut out for me.

So I went and cut this little fella out of its shell, and voila! Thanksgiving perfection, ready for you all, absolutely prepared to get your active Albions out of the range of pesky spellcaster tuner twinks and malfunctioning CyDra Xyzes alike. What you do with a Level 5 Tuner on the field afterward... well, that's up to the philosophers.

Happy holidays, and I'll see you on the next card. Or the Card Workshop, whichever one's been updated the least.

Until then: reviews, revelry, you know the drill.

Winged Roc of New Life/LIGHT/Fairy-Type Tuner Effect Monster/Level 5/1400 ATK/1700 DEF

Lore: If a Fairy monster you control would be used as Synchro or Link Material for a Fairy monster, this card in your hand can also be used as material. If this card is sent to the GY by a Ritual Spell, or a "Polymerization" or "Fusion" Spell: You can Tribute 1 monster; Special Summon this card, then you can return 1 Level 4 or lower Fairy monster from your GY to your hand. You can only use each effect of "Winged Roc of New Life" once per turn.

Do you know what you have just supported by unleashing this bird? Not only is this similar to "Garura, Wings of Resonant Life" in name, but also, it is usable in Ishizu Tearlaments which runs lots of Fairies and even fuses into Garura. You must really like stuff like Despia and Tears and are out to make up for anything they are lacking in. The good thing is you supported Synchro and Link more than you supported other summoning methods, which makes it so this would not break Tearlaments more than it is already broken, also it makes Despia play different than it does right now in the meta.

I don't usually make meta-analysis-ish comments here but it's hard not to, looking at this Fairy support and having just made a Tears video.

Ah, I see. Any suggestions you might have for reigning in the Fusion/Ritual supporting edge of this fine bird, then/

Instead of letting it return any Fairy, including the EARTH Fairies, make it only return Fairy Tuners or only LIGHT Fairies, and if so, the "Level 4 or lower" text can be removed. It may still have Diviner of the Herald as a target in Ishizu Tearlaments, but that's not enough for the card to as broken as I feared in the initial assessment.
