Straw Pirates Archetype - One Piece pirates in cardboard form

Recommended Posts

Hi, so I'm back again with a archetype I've been working on for a while - The Straw Pirates Archetype. They're a completely Pendulum-based deck that locks you out of the Extra Deck ala Monarchs, but in turn have terrific searching and recovery. While I call them Straw Pirates, the archetype only refers to "straw" cards, since all the cards in the archetype are puns involving the world "straw".  If you have a "strawsomer" pun for any of these cards, please let me know, I'm not that good at puns. I'll also be referring to each card by their original character name. Anyways, here we go!

“Straw Hat” Lufu D., the Exstrawdinary Pirate Captain (Earth Attribute, Level 7, Warrior/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 6-6)

ATK ?/ DEF ?

Pendulum:

[1] [Continuous-Like] You can Pendulum Summon "Straw" Monsters from your face-up Extra Deck to zones Link Monsters do not point to. [2] [Ignition-Like] Once while this card is in your Pendulum Zone: You can apply 1 of the following effects, then you can destroy this card.

  • Add 1 "Straw" Monster from your deck to your hand, except "“Straw Hat” Lufu D., the Exstrawdinary Pirate Captain".
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Place 1 "Straw" Monster from your deck or face-up Extra Deck face-up in your Pendulum Zone, except "“Straw Hat” Lufu D., the Exstrawdinary Pirate Captain".

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““Straw Hat” Lufu D., the Exstrawdinary Pirate Captain” once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““Straw Hat” Lufu D., the Exstrawdinary Pirate Captain” this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Continuous] While you control this Pendulum Summoned card, the first time each face-up “Straw” card you control would be destroyed each turn, by battle or card effect, it is not destroyed. [4] [Trigger] Once per turn, if a “Straw” Monster you control destroys an opponent’s Monster by battle and sends it to the GY: You can Special Summon that Monster to your field, and if you do, it is treated as a “Straw” Monster. Banish it if it leaves the field.

Luffy the Extraordinary here sets up the main format for all the straw hat pirates. He is a 1-card scale ala Monkeyboard and can ignore the Link Monster restriction, but since he locks you into only straw hats and the scales of all other straw hats only allow them to Pendulum Summon level 7, he's not going to cause excessive extra deck spam anytime soon. He also has a SS effect from hand in case your Pendulum Summon gets negated so they're not completely reliant on it, although it takes away his stardust sifr effect, which is his best effect.

“Pirate Hunter” Zolro, the Strawng Pirate Swordsman (Dark Attribute, Level 7, Warrior/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 6-6)

  • Place 1 "Straw" Monster from your deck face-up in your Extra Deck, except ““Pirate Hunter” Zolro, the Strawng Pirate Swordsman".
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Halve the ATK of 1 face-up Monster your opponent controls until the End Phase.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““Pirate Hunter” Zolro, the Strawng Pirate Swordsman" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““Pirate Hunter” Zolro, the Strawng Pirate Swordsman" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Continuous] All “Straw” Monsters you control gain 200 ATK for every face-up card your opponent controls, also all Monsters your opponent controls lose 200 ATK for every face-up card they control. [4] [Continuous] This Pendulum Summoned card can attack all Monsters your opponent controls, once each.

Zoro the Strong is your main beater, being able to output massive damage with his attack decreasing effect and asura priest effect. He also sets up Pendulum plays by being a archetypal pendulum treasure that dosen't minus you too hard. Also fun fact, Zoro's name is partially based on the name 4kids dubbed him in the US, Zolo.

“Cat Burglar” Noami, the Strawvvy Pirate Navigator (Water Attribute, Level 7, Spellcaster/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 6-6)

  • Add 1 "Straw" Spell from your deck to your hand.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Set 1 "Straw" Spell from your deck.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““Cat Burglar” Noami, the Strawvvy Pirate Navigator" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““Cat Burglar” Noami, the Strawvvy Pirate Navigator" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Trigger] Once per turn, if a “Straw” Monster you control destroys an opponent’s Monster by battle and sends it to the GY: You can Special Summon 1 “Straw-Term Pirate Member Token” (Warrior-Type/EARTH/Level 7/ATK ?/DEF ?) to your field (This Token’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000). [4] [Quick] Once while this Pendulum Summoned card is face-up on the field, when your opponent activates a Spell/Trap card or effect: You can destroy 1 face-up “Straw” card you control; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card.

Nami the Savvy searches the field spells (those are the only spells the straw hats have) and gives you S/T negation on legs if Pendulum Summoned. Since she's limited to only once while she's on the field, having 2-3 copies of her can completely shut down the opponent.

“God” Sogek, the Straw-Tongued Pirate Sniper (Wind Attribute, Level 7, Warrior/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 6-6)

  • Place 1 other "Straw" card from your hand or field on the bottom of your deck; draw 2 cards.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Target 1 face-up Monster on the field; change it to face-down Defense Position.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““God” Sogek, the Straw-Tongued Pirate Sniper" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““God” Sogek, the Straw-Tongued Pirate Sniper" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Continuous] If a “Straw” Monster you control attacks a Defense Position Monster, inflict double piercing battle damage. [4] [Quick] Once per turn, if you control this Pendulum Summoned card: You can target cards your opponent controls, up to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control with different names; destroy those targets. This card cannot declare an attack the turn you use this effect.

Usopp the Silver-Tongued gives you draw power and quick removal at the cost of himself not being able to attack, which isn't a issue if you use it during the opponent's turn. Double piercing battle damage also vaporizes any stray low DEF Monsters out of existence. His name is also based off of Sogeking, the alter-ego Usopp created during the Water 7 arc when he temporarily left the crew.

“Black Leg” Triji, the Strawphisticated Pirate Chef (Fire Attribute, Level 7, Warrior/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 6-6)

  • Destroy 1 card on the field.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Banish up to 2 cards from either GY, face-down.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of "“Black Leg” Triji, the Strawphisticated Pirate Chef" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 “"Black Leg” Triji, the Strawphisticated Pirate Chef" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Trigger] Once per turn, at the end of the Damage Step, if a “Straw” Monster you control battled an opponent’s Monster, but that opponent’s Monster was not destroyed by that battle: You can send that opponent’s Monster to the GY, and if you do, gain Life Points equal to that Monster’s original ATK. [4] [Ignition] During your Main Phase, if you control this Pendulum Summoned card: You can target 1 face-up Monster on the field; change it’s ATK and DEF to 0 until the End Phase, and if you do, inflict damage to your opponent, equal to half the ATK lost. You can only use this Monster effect of ““Black Leg” Triji, the Strawphisticated Pirate Chef” once per turn.

Sanji the Sophisticated has the only non-targeting removal effect among the straw hats and a Gagaga-cowboy like effect to finish off games. Ironically, pairing him up with Zoro is a good idea, unlike in the manga.

“Cotton Candy Lover” Hoppe, the Strawdious Pirate Doctor (Light Attribute, Level 7, Beast-Warrior/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 8-8)

  • Target 1 "Straw" card in your GY; add it to your hand.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): All "Straw" Monsters you control gain 500 ATK until the End Phase.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of "“Cotton Candy Lover” Hoppe, the Strawdious Pirate Doctor" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 "“Cotton Candy Lover” Hoppe, the Strawdious Pirate Doctor" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Continuous] While you control this Pendulum Summoned card, negate the effect of the first card or effect your opponent activates each turn, that would target a face-up “Straw” card(s) you control. [4] [Continuous] Each time a face-up “Straw” card(s) you control leaves the field, gain 800 Life Points.

Chopper the Studious gives all your straw hats once per turn targeting protection and some mostly meaningless life point gain. It's best that he's just Pendulum Summoned out on the field and not in the hand. He's also the first 8 scale, finally allowing the straw hats to properly Pendulum Summon.

“Demon Child” Nicol, the Strawsible Pirate Historian (Dark Attribute, Level 7, Fairy/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 8-8)

  • Target 1 other "Straw" Monster card in your Pendulum Zone; Special Summon it.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Look at all Set cards your opponent controls.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of “"Demon Child” Nicol, the Strawsible Pirate Historian" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 "“Demon Child” Nicol, the Strawsible Pirate Historian" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Continuous] If a “Straw” Monster you control battles, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects during the Damage Step. [4] Once while this Pendulum Summoned card is face-up on the field, when your opponent activates a Monster effect: You can destroy 1 face-up “Straw” card you control; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card.

Nicol Bolas jokes aside, Robin the Sensible is Nami for Monsters and a good extender for putting scales on the field after you've Pendulum Summoned.

“Iron Man” Frank, the Strawperb Pirate Shipwright (Earth Attribute, Level 7, Machine/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 8-8)

  • Special Summon 1 Level 7 Monster from your hand.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Target 1 face-up Spell/Trap your opponent controls; Set that target.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““Iron Man” Frank, the Strawperb Pirate Shipwright" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““Iron Man” Frank, the Strawperb Pirate Shipwright" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Trigger] Once per turn, if a “Straw” Monster you control attacks an opponent’s Monster with a higher ATK and/or DEF: You can make your attacking Monster gain 1000 ATK during Damage Calculation only. [4] [Ignition] Once per turn, if you control this Pendulum Summoned card: You can target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; send it to the GY, and if you do, this card gains 500 ATK until the End Phase.

Franky the Superb acts as a extender for any generic Level 7, but his real effect is non-destruction removal, although it's not a quick effect. Much like Chopper, he's best placed in the Extra Deck by Zoro and not in the hand. His straw-based pun is based off of his catchphrase in the manga, "Super!"

“Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician (Dark Attribute, Level 7, Zombie/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 8-8)

  • Send 1 "Straw" card from your deck to the GY, except "“Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician".
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Place 1 of your "Straw" Monsters, that is banished or in your GY, face-up in your Extra Deck, except "“Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician".

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Continuous] Your opponent cannot Special Summon Monsters in face-up Attack Position. [4] [Ignition] If you control this Pendulum Summoned card: You can take 1 “Straw” Monster from your GY, except ““Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician”, and either place it face-up in your Extra Deck or Special Summon it. You can only use this Monster effect of ““Soul King” Skule, the Strawilly Pirate Musician" once per turn.

Brook the Silly shuts down Link Decks and combos extremely well with Usopp to create a lose-lose situation for your opponent. He can also recycle any straw hat monster that happens to be sent to the GY either by your opponent or his Pend effect for extra plays.

“First Son of the Sea” Warsh, the Strawart Pirate Helmsman (Water Attribute, Level 7, Fish/Pendulum/Effect, Scales 8-8)

  • Take 1 Level 7 Monster from your GY, and either add it to your hand or shuffle it into the deck.
  • If you control another face-up "Straw" card(s): Destroy 1 other "Straw" Monster card you control; add from your deck to your hand, 1 Level 7 Monster with the same Attribute but a different name.

You cannot Special Summon Monsters from the Extra Deck the turn you activate this effect and/or Pendulum Summon while this card is in your Pendulum Zone, except “Straw” Monsters. You can only use this Pendulum effect of ““First Son of the Sea” Warsh, the Strawart Pirate Helmsman" once per turn.

Monster:

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. [1] [Unclassified] If you control no Monsters, or if all Monsters you control are "Straw" Monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only Summon 1 ““First Son of the Sea” Warsh, the Strawart Pirate Helmsman" this way per turn. [2] [Continuous] This card’s ATK/DEF are equal to the number of face-up “Straw” cards you control x1000. [3] [Trigger] Once per turn, at the start of the Damage Step, if a “Straw” Monster you control battles an opponent’s Monster: You can target 1 face-up card on the field; destroy it. [4] [Trigger] Once per turn, if a card(s) your opponent leaves the field while you control this Pendulum Summoned card: You can target 1 face-up card on the field; destroy it.

Jinbei the Stalwart is another generic extender, but he's also a searcher for any Level 7 Monster if you control another straw card. He also provides double removal if Pendulum Summoned.

Going Merry, the Pirates’ Strawylish Caravel of Paradise

Field Spell Card

This card gains the following effects, based on the number of face-up “Straw” Monster card(s) you control.

  • [1] [Continuous-Like] 1+: Once per turn, when a "Straw" card is activated in your Spell/Trap Zone, draw 1 card.
  • [2] [Continuous-Like] 2+: Any card that would be sent to your opponent's GY by battle or the effect of a “Straw” card is banished instead.
  • [3] [Continuous-Like] 3+: All "Straw" Monsters you control gain 1000 ATK during the Battle Phase.
  • [4] [Quick-Like] 5+: Once per turn: You can negate the effects of all face-up Monsters your opponent controls until the End Phase.
  • [5] [Quick-Like] 10: Once per turn: You can banish all cards from your opponent's hand, field, and GY, face-down.

[6] [Trigger-Like] If this face-up card leaves the field by an opponent's card effect: You can activate 1 "Thousand Sunny, the Pirates’ Strawsome Brigantine of New World" from your hand or deck. You can only activate 1 "Going Merry, the Pirates’ Strawylish Caravel of Paradise" per turn.

The stylish Going Merry, the first ship of the straw hats. Merry does everything; she makes your Pendulums go +2 upon activation, she's macro cosmos on legs to make your straw hats even more devastating, she gives each pendulum 2K attack, and if you want to be win more, she has 2 devastating effects that can end the game right there. She also floats into the upgraded field spell from hand or deck.

Thousand Sunny, the Pirates’ Strawsome Brigantine of New World

Field Spell Card

Must be activated by the effect of "Going Merry, the Pirates’ Strawylish Caravel of Paradise". This card gains the following effects, based on the number of face-up “Straw” Monster card(s) you control.

  • [1] [Ignition-Like] 1+: Once per turn: You can draw 1 card.
  • [2] [Continuous-Like] 2+: Any card that would be sent to your opponent's GY is banished face-down instead.
  • [3] [Continuous-Like] 3+: During your Main Phase, you can conduct 1 Pendulum Summon of a "Straw" Monster(s) in addition to your Pendulum Summon (You can only gain this effect once per turn).
  • [4] [Ignition-Like] 5+: Once per turn: You can negate the effects of all face-up cards your opponent controls.
  • [5] [Ignition-Like] 10: You can send 1 face-up "Straw" card you control to the GY; skip your opponent's next turn.

[6] [Trigger-Like] If this face-up card leaves the field by an opponent's card effect: You can add 1 "Going Merry, the Pirates’ Strawylish Caravel of Paradise" from your deck to your hand.

The awesome Thousand Sunny, the second ship of the straw hats. Sunny improves on Merry's effects in every way possible, being obviously the better of the two.... if only she could be activated without the need of Merry. Because of this, she's a nasty brick in the hand, but having a backup plan in case your opponent gets rid of Merry is a really good idea.
