A/N: Y'know all the new TCGs that are popping up all over YCM? I started that. Warmyst is Fire Emblem meets Chess meets YGO in a way that actually makes some form of sense. You'll see. If you're interested in cameoing, join the RP thread. I take a lot of things from there.

~Episode 1: The Game of Warmyst, Pt.1~

"Let me get this straight," Daniel Lastriches blurted out, a bit dazed. "Jared K. Tenuto is inviting the four of us to test his new hologram system?"

"Yeah," Eva von Vyal confirmed, her dark, impassive eyes scanning the invitation suspiciously. "I guess it's just because we're the only competent Mystgenerals around. The new system is for Warmyst -- Harvey Isler's tournament, remember?"

"Pinch me, I'm dreaming," the auburn-haired boy sighed happily. A rather bulky teenager of roughly the same age complied.

"Happy now, Dan?" Martin Fado yawned. "So why'd you wake us up so early?"

"We're heading to Tenuto, Inc.," Eva explained, "to test Jared's new system. We play Warmyst, and it's for Isler's tourney. C'mon." She strolled outside, admiring her false driver's license.

Inside, a Mystwar was already going on.

[Opening Phase]

Stanley: Assigning to Guard... Gorge Tortoise!

*Gorge Tortoise*

Stanley: Assigning to Assault Corps... Gorge Lizard!

*Gorge Lizard*

Stanley: Assigning to Vanguard... Gorge Warrior!

*Gorge Warrior*

Kane: Anything else?

Stanley: Nope.

Kane: Alright, then. Demon in Assault Corps, Devil in Garrison, Akuma in Vanguard.

*Demon*

*Devil*

*Akuma*

Kane: Let's hurry up. You first.

Stanley: Deal. Alright... I'll Warfog a Mountain Cliff on F8 for my Vanguard play.

*Mountain Cliff*

Stanley: Now all my soldiers get an extra point in STR. Then, for my Garrison play, I'll Fortify a Granite Wall on E7...

*Granite Wall*

Stanley: ...and, in the Assault Corps, move Gorge Lizard to G5. Your go. That's all my Corps.

Kane: Eh. This will be quick. Hm... First, the garrison. I Fortify a Bone Wall on F3.

*Bone Wall*

Stanley: But that's where your Devil is!

Kane: That's why I'm moving him forward, you idiot. I equip him with a Shield of Wretched Souls and end that Corps.

*Shield of Wretched Souls*

Stanley: Shield of Wretched Souls?! But that card is incredibly rare!

Kane: Yes, yes it is. Now stop pointing out the obvious and let my Assault Corps go. I move Demon to E5 and equip him with Shadow Master's Piercing Eye.

*Shadow Master's Piercing Eye*

Kane: Don't comment on the rarity of the card, please. Now then. Akuma, move to E6 and attack Granite Wall.

Attack Roll: 3 + 3MGC = 6

Defense Roll: 3 MDf

Outcome: Wall Broken

Kane: Yes, I won. Don't make a scene of it. Your move.

Stanley: A-alright. Hey, good draw! I Fortify another Mountain Cliff on G4.

Stanley (thinking): I shouldn't use Erupt yet. I'll wait and see if it gets desperate. Although, with his Shield of Wretched Souls, I think I might not have much of a choice...

Stanley: Continuing, I move Gorge Lizard to G4 and attack Devil physically!

Attack Roll: 6 + 2STR + 1STR = 9

Defense Roll: 4 + 2DEF + 2DEF = 8

Outcome: -1 HP bar

Stanley: Yes! A six! What luck!

Kane: Grr. Don't celebrate too much. It was all luck anyway.

Stanley: Yeah, but if I keep this up, I'm sure to win!

Kane: That's a big if.

Stanley: Either way, I won. So, I'll induct a Gorge Tortoise into the Garrison...

*Gorge Tortoise*

Stanley: And pass on my Vanguard. You can go.

Kane: Merveilleux. My powerful Akuma is ready to attack. But don't think I'd leave it unarmed. First, though, I'll play the Assault Corps. Demon, move to D7 and attack his new Tortoise.

Attack Roll: 2 + 2MGC + 1MGC = 5

Defense Roll: 6 + 2MDf = 8

Outcome: No Damage

Kane: Wh-what?!

Stanley: Another six! Yes!

Kane: *glances around the room* Just because we have spectators doesn't mean you have to gloat.

Stanley: We do? *looks around* Hehe... Time to get my game on, then!

Kane: Oh, no you don't. I'm not done. You seem rather well-acquainted with rare cards. Why don't I show you another one? I equip my Akuma with the Sword of Wretched Souls!

*Sword of Wretched Souls*

Eva: Bwahaha. Stanley, I can tell you now you're done for.

Martin: What does Sword of Wretched Souls do?

Daniel: It takes an HP bar off whoever it's equipped to right away, but it boosts MGC and STR by 2, and lets the wielder choose their Attack Preference. Normally it would make the wielder a Dark Master, but in this case, Akuma is a Dark Master already. Man, Eva, your brother's really good at this game.

Kane: ...You seem well-informed. That's precisely the effect of the Sword of Wretched Souls. That puts my Akuma's MGC at 5. All that magical energy is headed straight for your other Gorge Tortoise, Stanley!

Stanley: Oh, boy. Oh, well, I'll just get another six.

Kane: We'll see.

Attack Roll: 3 + 3MGC + 2MGC = 8

Defense Roll: 4 + 2MDf = 6

Outcome: -2 HP bars

Martin: Hah! No streak of luck can last forever, Stan!

Stanley: No! The Gorge Tortoise only has 5 HP bars!

Kane: Thanks for the info. I'm afraid, however, that my turn is over. You get another chance to save your pathetic self.

Attack Roll: 6 + 2STR = 8

Defense Roll: 6 + 2DEF - 1DEF = 7

Outcome: -1 HP bar

Kane: See? It still has 5 HP bars left.

Stanley: Whatever! I now use Gorge Lizard to attack Devil again!

Attack Roll: 3 + 2STR + 1STR = 6

Defense Roll: 5 + 2DEF + 2DEF = 9

Outcome: No Damage

Stanley: No! It's all because of that Shield of Wretched Souls!

Stanley (thinking): And now I can't play Erupt, either!

Kane: Yep. There's a reason I didn't make my Akuma invincible. Is it my turn yet?

Stanley: ...I don't have much choice...

Kane: Good. I can finish quickly.

Kane (thinking): It's good he's such an amateur: that Gorge Lizard can attack me now. I might as well start building up my own defenses.

Kane: I'll first make a play outside all of my Corps!

Stanley: What?

Kane: I equip myself with a Shadow Skull.

*Shadow Skull*

Stanley: Hey, I can attack you!

Kane: Not that it would equate to much now, loser. Demon and Akuma, devastate his Garrison again.

Attack Roll: 2 + 2MGC + 1MGC = 5

Defense Roll: 1 + 2MDf = 3

Outcome: -2 HP bars

Attack Roll: 3 + 3MGC + 2MGC = 8

Defense Roll: 2 + 2MDf = 4

Outcome: DEFEAT

Stanley: No, my Gorge Tortoise is gone!

Kane: Yes, and my Akuma is still as strong as ever. I'll just induct another Devil into my Garrison. Your move.

Martin: Damn it! I've always wanted that card! I can't believe he has it!

Daniel: The least deserving usually earn...

Stanley: Now your wall and Devil are both consumed in almighty flames!

Kane: So is your whole Assault Corps, idiot.

Stanley: Does it even matter anymore?

Kane: ...You have a point.

Stanley: Now, I equip Gorge Warrior with Chipped Crystal Dagger! Attack Demon again!

Attack Roll: 3 + 2STR + 2STR = 7

Defense Roll: 6 + 2DEF - 1DEF = 7

Result: No Damage

Stanley: No! Curse your Shield!

Kane: I assume you end. Your Garrison is in shambles. On my end, I'm not gonna waste time. Akuma, move to E9 and attack Stanley!

Stanley: Oh, geez.

Attack Roll: 4 + 3MGC + 2MGC = 9

Defense Roll: 3 + 3MDf = 6

Result: -3 HP bars

Stanley: Gaah! That... that hurt!

Jared: Heh. That means the system's working.

Stanley, Kane, Eva, Martin, & Daniel: What?!

Jared: You feel pain when you're attacked, as if you were really being hit. You can't sustain actual wounds, though, just the pain.

Stanley: Oh, noo...

Martin: Ooh, this will be fun!

Stanley: D-don't rub it in, Martini!

Martin: You're in no position to taunt, are you?

Kane: Let's get on with it. I Warfog a Black Myst in my Assault Corps on D7. Your brute's vision is distorted, taking off its STR.

*Black Myst*

Stanley: That felt good!

Kane: Whoopee for you.

Stanley: Now, I attack your Demon with my Gorge Warrior again!

Attack Roll: 1 + 2STR + 2STR - 1STR = 4

Defense Roll: 5 + 2DEF - 1DEF = 6

Result: +2 HP bars

Stanley: What?! What happened?!

Daniel: Chipped Crystal Dagger activated! The equipped card takes the difference between the Defense and Attack rolls as damage.

Kane: He said it. Play carefully. Now, then, it's my turn. Akuma, give him another dose of pain.

Attack Roll: 5 + 3MGC + 2MGC = 10

Defense Roll: 2 + 3MDf = 5

Result: -5 HP bars

Stanley: Aagh!

Martin: Ahahaha! Serves you right!

Kane: That it does.

Stanley: Martin, you stupid little -- Hey, what?! I only have two HP bars left!

Kane: Aye. And you're about to lose them. I move Demon to F8 to attack you too, with the Shadow-Piercing Eye!

Attack Roll: 3 + 3MGC + 1MGC = 7

Defense Roll: 2 + 3MDf = 5

Result: DEFEAT

"Gaah... Urk..." Stanley gasped, reeling from the shock of Jared's hologram system. "You... you beat me!"

"Yes, yes I did," Kane muttered, brushing his dark hair out of his eyes. "Don't make a speech about it. Please." Stanley just glared straight into his opponent's emerald eyes. Kane stared him right back down.

"That... was... genius!" Daniel realized, back with his group. "He deliberately saved his Sword of Wretched Souls for Akuma instead of Demon..."

"...'cuz he was saving up for Stanley himself," Eva finished appreciatively. "That's Kane for you."

Suddenly, a tall man in a tuxedo came walking into the metal room. He was smiling broadly, a twinkle in his light hazel eyes and a spring in his step. There was an unmistakable bulge in his chest pocket, too: a deck of Warmyst cards.

"Well done, Kane!" Jared Tenuto greeted the victor pleasantly. Kane nodded back politely. "Well, now I know I didn't make a mistake when I picked you all, don't I? Now then, there are a few issues I'd like to clear up, and I think another game will allow me to make the necessary adjustments. How about we see the younger von Vyal in action?"

Kane clearly had only just realized his younger sister was present.

"How about we pit you against, ah, say, young master Fado?" he suggested. "Step right up, step right up."

From the ground, Stanley Nollis stuck his tongue out at his old rival as the master of ice and the valkyrie general took their places.

"Urk. Don't humiliate me too badly," Martin warned Eva as he stepped up to the podium.

"I'm not as good as Kane, and you're not as bad as Stanley," Eva admitted as she drew. "I couldn't if I tried."

"Let's play, then," the slightly obese teenager sighed in relief.

OPENING PHASE

Martin: I'm doomed, I can already tell.

Eva: Yes, yes you are. I'll let you go first.

Martin: Alright. Hm. I'll place Winter Spirit Snail for the Garrison, Knight of the Frigid Blade for the Assault Corps, and Ice Master for the Vanguard.

*Winter Spirit Snail*

*Knight of the Frigid Blade*

*Ice Master*

Eva: Huh. Maybe you do stand a chance. Er, I'll put Battle Angel of the Shield in the Garrison, Archangel in the Assault Corps, and Valkyrie in the Vanguard. You can go.

Martin: And then I'll move my snail to E7, and give it a Snowstorm Wrap.

*Snowstorm Wrap*

That ups its DEF and MDf by one each against non-Ice soldiers.

Eva: Smart. Unlike someone here. *glares at Stanley*

Stanley: Hey! I detest that!

Eva: That's the point.

Martin: As hilarious as this is, I think I'll continue the Mystwar, if you don't mind. Knight of the Frigid Blade, head to G5. That'll be it for me.

Eva: Good, I'm raring to go. I move Valkyrie to F6 and equip her with the Valkyrie Blade!

*Valkyrie Blade*

Eva: Then, I'll play Summon Myst in my Garrison...

*Summon Myst

Martin: Urk, looks like they don't call it the angel of the shield for nothing.

Eva: You don't say. Now, if I'm not mistaken, it's my move. Hm... I use an Action card, Salvate. That lets me take a Dark Master from my deck and Induct it as an Angelic card.

Martin: At least you can't play it in your Vanguard.

Eva: You're going to wish I could, 'cuz now my brother's gift will see the battlefield for the first time ever. Come forth, Grim Phantom!

Jared, Stanley, Martin, & Daniel: !!

Kane: Nice work. But it won't last long...

Eva: I know. That's why I'm going to act quickly. In my Garrison, I activate Lead Forward! That lets me switch one Inducted corps with another. My Garrison can't move... but my Assault Corps can.

Martin: Oh, boy.

Eva: Now, Grim Phantom and Valkyrie! Destroy his Ice Master with your combined magic powers!

Attack Roll: 4 + 3MGC = 7

Defense Roll: 1 + 2MDf = 3

Attack Roll: 4 + 3MGC + 1MGC = 8

Defense Roll: 2 + 2MDf = 3

Defense Roll: 3 + 2MDf + 2MDf = 7

Result: No Damage

Eva: Not bad.

Daniel: Just count yourself lucky you didn't roll higher. You would have taken the difference 'cuz of his Ice Wall of Sparks.

Eva: !! Wow, you're definitely better than Stanley.

Stanley: Eh, is he?

Eva: Certainly. He knows that, historically, I attack with the player with the Vanguard, so he only has to surpass my Archangel's MGC to win most battles.

Stanley: Well, when you put it that way...

Eva: For now, though, I doubt this merits a full change of plans. I move Valkyrie to F8.

Stanley: Ha! You know what that means, Martini!

Martin: Tell me you did better!

Stanley: ...

Attack Roll: 5 + 3MGC + 1MGC = 9

Defense Roll: 4 + 3MDf = 7

Result: -2 HP bars

Martin: Aack!

Jared: The system improvements are in effect. Pain has been lessened slightly, so our Mystgenerals shouls be playing more of a game than a war.

Stanley: So now you lower it...

Martin: Ahahahaha! Stan, if you could only see the look on your face right now...

Jared: Pain is also proportionate to damage. So even if I hadn't updated the system, Stanley would still be in more pain, due to the Akuma's punishing blows being stronger than those of the Valkyrie.

Kane: Ah. Now...

Kane & Eva: Can we just get on with this?

Jared: Certainly. Martin, if I'm not mistaken, it's your move.

Martin (thinking): She never moved her snail! I can slip around it and attack her!

Martin: Heh... You forgot about your Garrison, Eva.

Eva: !!

Martin: Because of it, my Knight of the Frigid Blade can slip behind it to F2! It's slice-and-dicin' time!

Eva: Ah, geez. Here goes...

Attack Roll: 5 + 2STR = 7

Defense Roll: 5 + 3DEF = 8

Result: No Damage

Eva: Phew... that was nerve-wrecking. Geez, I can't forget about little details like that from now on...

Kane (thinking): Exactly right. At least she learned from this mistake.

Martin: I'll then Induct another soldier into my Garrison... the Wolf of Winternights!

*Wolf of Winternights*

Eva: ...But that card is so offensive.

Martin: Don't think I never picked up a couple von Vyal tricks. I got a booster pack yesterday, and I just so happened to get this!

*Lead Forward*

Eva: That's Lead Forward!

Martin: Since you used the card so brutally yourself, you'll know I can now un-induct the Garrison to Induct the Vanguard. Since my Wolf is adjacent to your Valkyrie, which is in turn adjacent to me, I can attack with it!

Attack Roll: 4 + 3STR = 7

Defense Roll: 3 + 2DEF = 5

Result: -2 HP bars

Eva: Ouch! That was...

Martin: I'd attack myself if I didn't fear the repercussions, so I'll just give myself an Ice Shield of Sparks and end this.

-Out-of-storY-: These'll pop up from time to time if an obscure ruling is used. If the player attacks, and the defense roll is higher than the attack roll, the player takes the difference as damage, as if they were equipped with Chipped Crystal Dagger, or if the opponent was equipped with Ice Shield of Sparks.

Eva: Don't think you've scared me off. I have a Ride of the Valkyries Action card, which boosts a single stat of any Angelic soldier I have out to the max.

Martin: You're picking MGC, aren't you?

Eva: What else would I pick? Valkyrie, attack with your boosted strength!

Martin: Ouch...

Attack Roll: 4 + 6MGC = 10

Defense Roll: 2 + 3MDf + 1MDf = 6

Result: -4 HP bars

Martin: Gaaah! Augh... This holo system really does work!

Eva: Wonderful, isn't it?

Martin: Well, you're not on the receiving end!

Eva: I'm about to be... or am I? Knight of the Frigid Blade, feel my fury.

Martin: This will be interesting.

Kane & Daniel (thinking): So what's her attack?

Eva: :NObfashdvlbuit&SFoaw8efoiuG!

Kane, Daniel, Stanley, & Martin: What?!

Attack Roll: 4 + 3MGC = 7

Defense Roll: 1 + 2MGC + 1MGC = 4

Result: -3 HP bars

Kane & Daniel: Impressive.

Eva: Merveilleux. Another hit like that and your Knight will bite the dust... if you don't first. That's all for me.

Attack Roll: 4 + 3STR + 2STR = 9

Defense Roll: 6 + 2DEF = 8

Result: -1 HP bar

Martin: Heh. That's very therapeutic.

Eva: Well, that was lucky. A natural six...

Martin: But your Valkyrie isn't safe from my Wolf of Winternights! Attack!

Attack Roll: 3 + 3STR = 6

Defense Roll: 4 + 2DEF = 6

Result: No Damage

Eva: Again, the angel knight survives the battle.

Martin: Ack, I'm done for... Well, Knight of the Frigid Blade, attack one last time! Prove the strength of icy warriors!

Attack Roll: 6 + 2STR = 8

Defense Roll:2 + 3DEF = 5

Result: -3 HP bars

Eva: Aaagh!

Eva: I'd be glad to. Valkyrie, destroy him once and for all!

Attack Roll: 5 + 3MGC + 1MGC = 9

Defense Roll: 1 + 3MDf + 1MDf = 5

Result: DEFEAT

Martin was, surprisingly, smiling in jubilation as he stepped jauntily off the platform.

"What are you so happy about?" Stanley demanded of his old rival as Kane and Daniel left to congratulate Eva.

"Isn't it obvious?" Martin smiled. "I just proved I'm better than you."

"You didn't last as long!" Stanley protested.

"But I did a lot more in the allotted time, didn't I?" the ice general pointed out. "Really left an impact there. You didn't so much as scratch Kane."

"Just 'cuz she made that one mistake..." the lanky young man grumbled.

"A mistake which I successfully exploited," Martin rebuked his much thinner enemy's statement.

They continued to bicker for a while, until...

This looks pretty damn awesome. The story works well to explain the mechanics and the way the game flows, even if it hasn't gone very far yet. It would help if you color-coded different soldiers on the playing field and in the narration, as well as give the stats for them. But it's pretty fine as it is. As far as favorite attributes go, no idea. Probably Angels, from what little I've seen so far.

Got a question though. What does Garrison actually do? I never really understood that in the instructions in the RP thread.

The Garrison's main purpose is to serve as a wall to protect the player. Members of the Garrison can't attack. It's a good idea to put a card archive; I'll add that much. Many thanks for the review.

With all due respect,

By "successful," I mean "directly or indirectly inspired a huge burst of mimickries, some of which include Amun-Ra, The World Order, and ultimateryan's yet-unnamed card game." In this case, they're all indirect. It basically created a TCG boom like the member card one.

Well, regardless of how the whole thing came to be (I've been out of the forums for a few months, so I wouldn't know), it's pretty well-structured. So, to my understanding, the soldiers in the Garrison just... stand there? Can't the enemy go directly for the player instead of his guards? What can they do in that case? It just seems that there could be something more to it. Or can Fortify only used with Garrison?

As demonstrated in the last Mystwar, the Garrison is essentially a set of moving walls. Also, you'll see in Martin's deck several cards that can only be played by the Garrison. Most people go straight for the player, but if you're adjacent to a player, the Garrison can attack you.

Saying that Ultimateryan's TCG was indirectly inspired by yours is like saying Harry Potter was indirectly inspired by Mein Kampf. It's more likely that ryan was just inspired by YGO or MTG.

Amun-Ra feels more inspired by team-based shooters than a card game. The game basically is King of the Hill.

Umbra: Well, it depends how you interpret my words, doesn't it? Few people would probably have gotten the idea to make a TCG in the first place were it not for Warmyst. And commercials don't have to be factual either way.

Prof. Yugi: Thanks, but why?

All: Episode 2 has been posted. It's about twice as long as the other two, 'cuz I didn't make it a two-parter. Card archive will show up later.

Even the people who made their TCG's before you? (You might also consider that there are tons of various TCG's out there, and yours might not be the only place to find inspiration?)

Eh, he didn't say anything like that... he just said he started the fad, which may or may not be true, I have no idea. Anyway, nice job on the second / third chapter, can't wait to see how this goes on. The strategy and tactic keeps getting deeper and deeper.

Umbra: Eh. Let's just agree to disagree.

Ixigo: Thanks. I woke up at 04:30 to finish it; I'm glad it's not too bad.
