ReXyclers, a mistake of a Quick-Play archetype [Written]

So, since this is the first archetype i'll be submitting since i came back, i'll try to give as good of an impresion as i can. ReXyclers are some sort of control deck centered around a line-up of Quick-Play Spell, as well as a boss monster with the ability to set those said spells as an easy way to get extra interruptions on the field once they get the ball rolling.

This deck plays out as some sort of ungodly amalgamation of Sky Strikers and Doomking Balerdroch, and the similarities have driven me nearly insane while trying to create all the cards, so i'll probably avoid bringing them up as i describe the cards and my thought process. The deck so far consists of 1 Monster, 1 Field Spell, 1 Continuous Spell and 6 Quick-Play Spells (Though i am not happy with the last 2 Quick-Plays and i'll probably remove them in the future) as i wanted the card count to be high enough to be able of using it without needing to add extra engines while also being a half decent engine on its own

Also, as a disclaimer, though i tried my best to have proper psct, i must admit that i didnt knew some rules such as capitalization, nor did find a real card to compare my psct for all my cards, so sorry if it is a little jank, please point out those errors to me so i can improve

As for potential synergies with the deck, i am not the most well versed person in the current meta, but i figured out some half decent combos.

First of all, this archetype is not Normal Summon reliant at all, it literally doesnt have any archetype specific Normal Summon, so any Normal Summon combo such as Invoked could be mixed in the strategy quite easily.

The spells of the archetype have 2 effs, one in GY and one when activated normally, but the GY effects are somewhat hard to reach within the archetype, something very annoying considering that most board building effs are the GY ones. This makes them combo well with cards like Foolish Burial with Goods, which in turn allows them to run a single copy of Metalfoes Fusion without that many regrets. They could also probably combo extremely well with Lightsworns, considering that they can easily give up their summon for a Lumina or a Raiden, which then could be used to stack their GY and accelerate their plays, though considering that this deck needs to stack the top of their deck to activate both its boss monster's and its continuous spell's eff, it would require some fine tuning and practice to get the most out of them, or maybe just not using either of those cards. 60 card Shadoll Invoked Metalfoes Lightsworn ReXycler when?

The deck could potentially mix well with the most similar strats i found to it, aka Sky Strikers and Doomking, but thinking about it i found quite a few annoying details getting in the way of them being played together, such as the boss monster preventing Sky Striker spells from being activated

Finally, since this deck is centered around top deck stacking, maybe it synergizes with Sylvans or Adamancipators, or maybe Monster Gate of all things, but i cannot be bothered to actually learn the combos of those strats, specially with Block Dragon banned

Cards:

ReXycler Prometheus, Protector of the World

Earth / Level 8

Effect / Machine

2200 atk / 3100 def

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (From the Hand or GY) by banishing 2 cards from your Hand.

When your opponent activates a Spell/Trap card, or a monster effect (Quick Effect): you can banish 1 “ReXycler” card  from your hand or Set on your field; negate the activation and banish that card

(Quick Effect): excávate 1 card from the top of your deck, if the card is a Quick-Play Spell, Set it on your side of the field, it can be activated this turn. If not, banish it face-down

You can only use each effect of “ReXycler Prometheus, Protector of the World” once per turn

So, this is the boss monster of the deck, as well as the only monster the archetype has. Prometheus is designed around having hard card advantage costs, since in theory control strats excel at hoarding and trading their generated advantage. It is very generic to summon, it doesnt consume a Normal Summon, and though you go -2 in order for it to hit the field,  in theory it can output up to 3 interruptions per opponent's turn, by setting a Quick-Play on your turn, one during their turn, and then having a negate per turn. You can also set up you banished card on the top of your deck through some of your other cards effs, allowing to mitigate the -2 into a -1, though most of the recursion effs are not generic and thus you cant apply them to out-of-archetype cards, though you can always run Acquisitiveness to compensate, and maybe even figure out ways to loop it. One of the main problems with it is that since it has a big upfront cost and little to no protection outside re-summoning it, it can be suceptible to handtraps, so you should try to run counters for them in your strat or have prepared a way to re-summon it, since it only has a "Must be first..." restriction

Since the field spell allows you to summon Prometheus from GY by banishing 1 ReXycler, in your GY, this card can also be excellent link  fodder, specially if you use it towards the end of your combo, so you can benefit from the negate in case your opponent has any hand traps. Depending on whether you use him as fodder 1 or 2 times, you might have to sacrifice an extra set Quick-Play for this use, so if you have ways to stack your deck it might not be the best move. You also need to forgo the GY effs of any of the ReXyclers you banish, so that might be another downside to this use, but in most cases if they stayed in your GY throught your combo it was because you either already used their effs this turn or couldnt find a meaningful way to use them, so that isnt as big of a downside

ReXycler Plant

Field Spell

If a “ReXycler” monster is summoned to your field: you can send 1 of your banished cards to the top of your deck

During your Main Phase: you can banish 1 “ReXycler” card  from your GY; Special Summon 1 “ReXycler” monster on your GY to your field

If this card  is targetted by a card effect (Quick Effect): you can instead banish it, then place up to 3 “ReXycler” card(s) from your banish zone or GY in the top of your Deck in any order

You can only use each effect of “ReXycler Plant” once per turn

This is the archetype's field spell and one of its main ways to recur their resources. It has some fun interactions, such as being able to stack a card used to summon Prometheus and then have the monster inmediatly set said card to minimize advantage loss, it can be used post-proper summon as a way to easily recover Prometheus as a way to make it hard for your opponents to get rid of them, while triggering this card's own eff in the process and potentially setting up that card to be reused, and in case of being targeted it can be blown up to stack your deck, and you can trigger this on your own, as well as having the ability to stack themselves, since as a Then effect it would go to the banish zone before the stacking happens. Unless i had a massive oversight, i do believe this is one of the strongest card of the deck, and one of the main annoyances with other archetypes is having to compete for your Field Spell slot with other cards, though again you can still just blow this up to generate advantage after using this card's other effs and the replae it with another field spell

ReXycler Spillage Crew

Quick-Play spell

Banish 1 “ReXycler” card from your hand, then Banish 1 Monster your opponent’s field, but you cannot conduct your Battle Phase this turn. If only your opponent controls Extra Deck monsters, you can play this card directly from your Hand.

You can only actívate 1 “ReXycler Spillage Crew” per turn

This is the archetype's main Going Second tool, though it is still a half decent interruption if you go first. Though you go -1, this is non-targetting, non-destruction removal, and the archetype has some interesting ways to recover this card, though you need to think a bit about how to do it since this card doesnt have a self-banishing eff. It is decent as a handtrap and better as a board breacking tool, and looping it on a stategy that doesnt use the Extra Deck a whole lot would be extra annoying. An interesing way to use this card would be banishing an extra copy of a spell you already used this turn, to then stack it and set it for you opponents turn, but its cost is relatively hard to exploit in general just because the archetype has better ways to archieve the same result

ReXycler Data Collection

Quick-Play Spell

Target 1 face-up monster on your opponent’s field: change that target to face-down defense position

If this card is in your GY: you can banish it; choose 3 “ReXycler” cards from your Deck, and place them on the top of your Deck in any order

You can only use 1 “ReXycler Data Collection“ effect per turn, and only once that turn

This is one of the cards that the archetype relies on to build proper boards, specially if you already have Materials on field and lack a way to blow up your field spell, as it can allow you to re-stack your top deck in case you're running thin on it while not consuming banished resources and letting you choose which cards you want in this scenario. Otherwise, it is just a Book of Moon effect. A particularily cute interaction is that, since this spell (And most other spells in the archetype) are Quick-Plays, if i understood properly, their GY effs are spell speed 2, so you can use it to stack you deck on your opponents turn if you were playing a Lightsworn variant to prevent you stacked cards from hitting the GY in case you wanted to set them with Promtheus rather than use their GY effs

ReXycler Biodegradable Materials

Continuous Spell

Once per turn: you can discard 1 “ReXycler” card from your Hand; excávate 1 card from the top of your Deck, if it is a Quick-Play Spell card, add it to your hand. if not, banish it face-down

If this card you control is targeted  by an effect (Quick Effect): you can instead banish it; add 1 banished “ReXycler” card back to your Hand

You can only use each effect of “ReXycler Biodegradable Materials” once per turn

This card, i dont know how to feel about. First of all, its costs is actually kind of an upside, as along Cannibalized is one of the few ways in archetype to let cards like Data hit the GY without having to activate them first, letting you set up your board easily, while being a way to get cards back into you hand and gain advantage of again, cards like Data or Plant. It's self destruction removal is cute, and also a way to get back Prometheus if it gets banned, so it might be a good card, but still, i might change this one, i do not vibe with it

ReXycler Cannibalized Tech

Quick-Play Spell

Target  1 other card you control, destroy it, and if it was a “ReXycler” card; draw 1 card

If this card is in your GY: you can banish it, then banish 1 in your hand; add 1 “ReXycler” card from your deck to the hand

You can only use 1 “ReXycler Cannibalized Tech“ effect per turn, and only once that turn

This card is one of the archetype's best board building cards, as it allows you to do a lot of fancy plays and it is in general very versatile. Since the entire archetype either can resolve post removal or can blow itself up for advantage, this card's first effect essentially says "Upstart Goblin". You activate a card, activate Cannibalized in response, Cannibalize blows the card up and draws 1, the effect of the card still goes through. However, this card can also let you blow up cards like Data that you didnt wanna activate and wanted to hit the GY, as well as let Plant and Materials activate their floating effs, being in general very versatile in its ways to generate resources. Its GY effect is just a search that goes +0 and lets you set up Banish in case that's relevant, while being able to use generic cards as payment. In general, you will almost aways want either this card on your hand or a way to let it hit the GY as main way to reach your combo pieces

ReXycler Scrap Foundry

Quick-Play Spell

Send 1 “ReXycler” card from your deck to the GY

If this card is in your GY: you can banish it; target 1 card on the field, destroy it

You can only use 1 “ReXycler Scrap Foundry“ effect per turn, and only once that turn

This card is actually an interesting tech. In one hand, it is an archetypal Foolish Burial with Goods, letting you trigger things like Data or Cannibalize in order to prepare your board quite easily. On the other hand, since its GY is basically a speed spell 2 pop 1, you could in theory just run 3 copies of this card on a deck like Lightsworns and just treat it as a weird GY Firehand, something that i find quite amusing. Either way, specially on mill variants, this is the interruption the deck has avaible, being very easy to reach. It also can be used to self pop cards whenever that is relevant, like using Plant selfdestruct during your opponents turn to stack three for Prometheus, though more often than not you would use it's first effect during your turn, leaving this option out of the picture. Cute card, could be quite annoying, could see it as one of the deck mid-tier picks, scaling a lot in power when used in mill variants

ReXycler Containment Procedure

Quick-Play Spell

Banish 1 “ReXycler” card from your hand; target 1 card in either player’s field, then, its effects are negated and it cannot be targeted or destroyed by card effects (until the end of the turn)

If this card is in your GY: you can banish it; banish 1 “ReXycler” card from your deck

You can only use 1 “ReXycler Containment Procedure“ effect per turn, and only once that turn

Finally, we get to Procedure and Protocol, my two least favorite card, the ones that i've felt like they were filler the most, and the ones i am more willing to change of the whole bunch. Lets start with Procedure. Procedure lets you go -2 in card advantage in order to gain the ability to negate one card your opponent controls, or alternatively in some cases protect 1 of your cards, though considering its cost and the fact that it negates that second use its harder to justify using it defensively. Also, i am pretty certain that thanks to the "Then" connector, you should be able to chain Plant/Materials' self destruction eff to this card targetting them, since the gamestate were they are being targeted is prior to them being negated. Its GY is kinda weak, but considering that is a negate, requiring heavy set up to make use of that effect should be fair

ReXycler Contamination Protocol

Quick-Play Spell

When a monster(s) would be Special Summoned: banish 1 card from the bottom of your deck; negate the summoning and destroy the monster(s)

If this card is in your GY: you can banish it; send up to 3 banished “ReXycler” card(s) into your GY

You can only use 1 “ReXycler Contamination Protocol“ effect per turn, and only once that turn

Again , since i dont quite like this card that much, i'll be brief. This card is basically a Solemn Strike minus the negate, being a nice interruption to set up, and it's cost (Specially on a pure variant) lets you stack your Banish early game to ensure that you dont run out of cards to stack without costing you card advantage. The GY eff is a bit underwhelming with some niche uses, since the deck has lots of recursion. It lets you send back to GY cards like Data that you might wanna play after they were sent by effs like Prometheus cost, and once you reach lategame you might have enough cards in your banish zone to return three activate three and not be locked out of your entire pool of resources for the rest of the turn, but otherwise specially on mill variants is not that good

That is about it with the archetype, i think that with that i am officially done, at least, til i get some feedback. There were some more things i wanted to do, in general, Protocol and Procedure are two cards that i didnt like at all for an example, and i also wanted to spoiler the reasoning i put behind my cards to make reading more comfortable, but i couldnt wrap my boomer brain around it so i guess that is that. Also, holy s***, i hate this archetypes name, it sounded cool at the start but man i grew tired of it fast, and the similarities with sky striker spell when i checked em for inspiration almost made me cry. Anyways, i hope y'all like this horrible, ungodly mess, i dont know why i made this archetype, i probably cannot play it with my mystic mine burn brain anyways. Imma let my brain cool down after my single braincell melted, til the next time, see ya

  • drowsyCoffee changed the title to ReXyclers, a mistake of a Quick-Play archetype [Written]
  • 2 weeks later...

Hello Shadow Black-Wood,
As I see, you've put alot of effort into this archetype and its presentation. The theme of recycling all the cards fits the playstyle very well. I'm actually imagining artworks for these cards as funny little garbage collecting automatons and recycling machines. The archetype overall seems to be a pretty well elaborated strategy, with a certain theme in mind.
When reading through the cards I spotted some major PSCT errors and I will point some of them out, but I'm not going to fix all the minor errors as capitalization, typos and grammar. As a hint in advance: Quick Play Spells, that have ignition effects from the GY, activate those in Spell Speed 1. Most of the official Quick Play Spells, that do have GY effects actually state "During your Main Phase" as condition for their effects, but as the effects are Ignition- and not Activation effects, their Spell Speed goes down to the basic card speed. Same rules apply to Counter Trap Cards with GY effects. These would have Spell Speed 2. Also keep in mind that a ":" separates the condition or trigger from the cost or targeting, which is separated from the effect by a ";". So the scheme is always [Condition/Trigger] ":" [Cost/Targeting] ";" effect ".". Conditions and triggers don't do anything, cost and targeting happen before the chain resolves and the effects are resolved during the chain (in reversed order).

"ReXycler Prometheus, Protector of the World"
At first I found this card pretty strong, as it wields a really strong omni negate, while being absolutely generic. But due to the -2 card balance I think it's absolutely fine. In comparison to Halqifibrax (into Linkross), which basically is a 1 card combo, that can create 3 or 4 interruptions, it's actually not even that strong. Also the Revive Limit is a great way to make sure the player actually has to pay for using this card. Furthermore I love the excavating effect. This makes the card more than just a boring Omni-Negate-Protected-Beater-Boss-Monster, as it actually interacts with the archetype cards very well.

"ReXycler Plant"
This is the one card I'd probably consider overpowered. Since it basically sets Prometheus up for his effect upon Summoning him, it's a +2 every time you revive Prometheus. Also this allows you to Set any used ReXycler Quick Play Spell from the GY or banished pile back on the field, which in my opinion is a little bit to much. In addition to that, I don't think that I like the floating effect, as you can simply return 2 Quick Play Spells and this card to the Deck, so you get to use Prometheus effect once during your turn, once during your opponents turn and then draw the Plant again to generate more advantage. This card definetely does to much for the Deck on its own.

"ReXycler Spillage Crew"
This one is a solid removal card, even though the cost is pretty high, but regarding the fact, that most of your cards can generate an advantage, I agree with the -1 card balance cost on this one. I also like the opportunity to activate the card from your hand against Extra Deck cards, even though you worded this kind of poor, as all Quick Play Spells can be activated from the hand, but I guess you meant during the opponent's turn too 😉

"ReXycler Data Collection"
Basically a Book Of Moon, which isn't to bad. I actually play Book of Moon as a Side Deck choice in a competitive Deck tbh. What makes me think here is the Deck-stacking effect. Stacking 3 cards might be to much - I think 2 'd be perfect, as it means you can use Prometheus during your and your opponents turn and then draw something new. Decks that don't actually draw random cards are a little to consistant and use to go through the same plays over and over again (Malefic World is honestly one of the worst cards ever made).

"ReXycler Biodegradable Materials"
I really like the search mechanic on this card, as it works together with the other (stacking) effects, just like little Wall-Es (still imagining the pictures as Wall-E and his colleagues years before the movie) should, but dislike the floating effect, as it can basically go back to hand instead of being destroyed, or even gives you a better card like Plant back, which makes it really hard to deal with. I don't think the floating effect is necessary here.

"ReXycler Cannibalized Tech"
Just imagine a waste-service robot eating another one 😄
Destroying as cost, including an "if" condition is hyper weird. I guess the way you actually wanted the effect to work is this:
"Target 1 other card you control; destroy it, and if it was a "ReXycler" card, draw 1 card." The search effect here is fine, but I'd rather stack the card on top of the Deck than adding it to the hand, as the archetype plays with topdeck anyway and simple "add 1 ..." effects are lame (combo potential with Biodegradable Materials).

"ReXycler Scrap Foundry"
The foolish effect on this is significant, as the archetype lacks ways to get cards into the GY, but needs them, as you stated yourself. Anyhow the GY effect is to strong and generic in my opinion. What you call "quite amusing" is what I call the step from rouge to tier 1. I might be exaggerating here, but I still think that the GY effect atleast needs some kind of a discard cost.

"ReXycler Containment Procedure"
I actually like the card since the first effect is very versatile and the second is somehow an innovative way of searching cards (add to hand is boring).

"ReXycler Contamination Protocol"
I think banishing from the bottom of the Deck is a weird cost, I'd rather banish or mill the top card, as you can stack that, also "Negate the Summon" and "return up to 3 banished cards to the GY" for the wording. Summon negates are quite uncommon these days (except for that one Dinosaur card), but I actually like this. Anyhow I don't think that it should be generic, so maybe include a Summon lock to "ReXycler" monsters or restrict the Extra Deck until your next End Phase.

All in all I think this archetype really brings up some innovative and fun techniques and is relatively well balanced. The biggest problem is of course the lack or rather wrong usage of PSCT, but I'm pretty sure that you can fix that up. So far this is my favourite archetype to review. I would really like to play against it some day, so please contact me via Discord or pm me here if you are interested.

Best regards,
Messoras
