Monopoly! ( Taxing your opponent )

Recommended Posts

This is a series of cards I thought of based around the board game Monopoly. This archetype focuses around taxing the opponent, maybe not out of their money, but rather, out of their life points! Each time your opponent visits one of your properties, they will not only pay a fine, but the owner might even get something better! From getting a free draw, to destroying one of their opponent's cards, to getting a free add from the grave, to shuffling a card from their opponent's hand away! The Monsters in this archetype focus around swarming and help give the archetype more consistency in how they place their properties. This easy swarm and placements might even allow for Rich Uncle Pennybags himself to make an appearance! With him allowing for total board control and perfect property management, no opponent will be safe from bankruptcy!

Any review is always greatly appreciated!

So kind of like Trickstars in Spell/Trap form?

I can't say for certain how fair the Property cards are as they're all based on what Zone your opponent Summons in. And they'll usually get to choose.

Field Spell should have some sort of maintenance cost or condition, because as is, it doesn't seem possible for your opponent to remove it or other Monopoly cards. A complete blanket of protection. For comparison, look at Golden Castle of Stromberg. Destroys opponent's stuff and lets you Summon, but you have to live with the fact that you have to pay a hefty 10 cards from your Deck. Melodius Aria and Elegy both being Special Summoned. Both need to be Special Summoned somehow to achieve this blanket, and even then, there are other ways to remove either (non-targeting removal).

Income Tax is okay. It can hurt, but it is conditional enough not to be too much of an issue.

Luxury Tax: Same story, but half the damage.

Free Parking: This one should have a max of how many Counters it can have or how many cards you can draw.

Go To Jail: I personally like this one. But that's probably because I like banishing and playing with banished cards. Personally prefer it over Interdimensional Matter Transporter.

Thimble: Should have a "once per turn" clause on its effects(s). Given how you can do the first one when it's Special Summoned as well.

Sack: Should have a cost or condition for its first effect. Second effect would be more fair if you send it to the GY. Returning to the hand is a nothing cost.

Racecar...okay. I'm just going to skip. These monsters don't have sufficient costs, and much less with those ATK and DEF. Life Points, banishing, Tributing. Almost anything would be better costs than what most of these monsters have. They're just not fair. Too much reward with too little consequence.

Pennybags: ATK is not appropriate for this Link 3. And while Kaiju and such exist, that blanket protection is not warranted just for playing these Spell/Trap Cards. If it was just targeting or something like that, then I could understand. But as is, no.

Overall: Good premise, but there's A LOT of room for improvement. Mainly being balance. Giving some of these cards actual costs and conditions to even out their swarming and protection. And different ATK and DEF. I can understant the Main Deck monsters having the same ATK and DEF. Like playing pieces, granting no advantage over the other. But at the same time no, since they all have different effects. So having them all sport the same ATK and DEF comes off as lazy.

The first effect is now split into 2 effects ( the new second effect carries a cost )

Protection effect removed

All effects are now a hard once per turn

- Racecar

First effect now no longer searches

Second effect now shuffles into the deck for a cost

All effects are now a hard once per turn

Second effect now requires a discard cost

All effects are now a hard once per turn

- Scottie Dog

First effect now only specials itself from hand

All effects are now a hard once per turn

- Top Hat

First effect now only specials itself from the GY

Restriction on link material usage removed

All effects are now a hard once per turn

Ah. That's better. Granted, there are some areas that could use improvement, but it's still more balanced than before.

Field Spell's condition still isn't very substantial. And no. That's no maintenance cost. It's a condition. Paying Life Points (1000 at least) would be more substantial. Especially since it's at least a +2.

Free Parking: A cap of 2 is more fair.

The Main Deck monsters: Effects should be "You can only activate 1 of the effects" instead. Given how something like Money or Battleship shouldn't be able to use both effects.

Pennybags: ATK is pushing it, as most Link 3s don't have 3000 ATK. The few that do have very specific Summoning conditions/Materials.

Overall: There is still room for improvement, but it is still a big improvement compared to the original post.

Thanks again for the feedback! I can make a few minor ( but good ) changes here.

Changes

- Free Parking counters now capped at 2 instead of 3

Players

- Effects are now "only 1 per turn, and only once that turn" ( with the exception of the cop )

- New ATK/DEF values ( change things up a little bit )

The Cop

- Now gains 1000 ATK/DEF when he battles a link 3 monster

- Now sends itself as a cost for it's negation effect

- Now can send itself from the field in addition to the hand

Uncle Pennybags

- Now has 2850 ATK ( down from 3000 ATK )
