Thar
[spoiler=old] Edit: Just noticed a dark blotch in the bottom middle. Likely coming from the g-map layer. I'll fix it later.
Tormented
So this is interesting, I defo see a change of style that you're attempting, currently, the lighting looks nowhere near strong enough to make it actually work It just sorta stops, like there isn't and doesn't light anything up. The out of focus/pixelation effect hasn't been done too great here-as such it leaves me with the thought that this could be great but I'm just kinda shrugging at it. It's very busy with next to no logical progression, I think it would look better in focus or more pixelated, right now it's sat in limbo.

I applied stronger lighting from the hammer and increased the blur radius on the c4d around him. From that, I think it looks much better, but let me know what you think. Twenty-five Zero Oh-oh
The lightning effect you're using is a light source that's too bright for its surroundings. Right now, your tag looks somewhat detached. There's the render + lightning and then there's the background. Keep in mind that light sources should affect not only your focal, but all visible surroundings. You could perhaps incorporate brighter foreground elements or lighten the background the help improve lighting/depth.

Yeah, the way I envisioned it in my head was a lot simpler, but it ended up super complicated and not very executable. Still though, it didn't turn out horrible, I don't think. Next time I'll stick with the natural lighting on the render and not try to force it.
Twenty-five Zero Oh-oh
There's nothing wrong with modifying highlights on your render/focal. In fact, your highlights on your render here look fine. Just don't forget that the rest of the piece exists as a part of the same environment and make sure that it reflects your intentions in lighting.
