It goes by many names. Determination. Resolve. Willpower. Refusing to give in despite the temptation. Refusal to give up despite the odds.

 

Determination show up everywhere in fiction. The hero refuses to give up or give in during his darkest hour, and that keeps him going. It's a plot device older than time. It also shows up in real life as well. People who refuse to give up on themselves are often rewarded.

 

However, determination has a dark side. Determination can carry someone on a lost cause that will lead them down a path of death and destruction. It can also give someone the resolve to do something horrible, like killing someone or getting revenge by any means. Sometimes, you gotta know when to fold'em.
