Mentioning Rules Discussion

Blake

Recommended Posts

Unlike the last topic, this one's going to be bare.

As most of you know we now have the ability to tag members or mention them in our posts. Like so:
@

@@BANZAI!!!!
@@Flame Dragon
@@Dad
@@God Emperor Cow
@@Flash Flyer - Sakura

This exciting new feature has seen its fair share of use in the past few days, and the team has begun to talk about what rules need to be in place for this ability.

For example, do we need to cap how many people you're allowed to tag in a post, to prevent tagging abuse? Or can we leave it as-is, because you guys will handle it properly, only using mass tagging for uses such as contests, RPs, or other tournaments?

Do we need to cap how often you can tag someone? How about both, with how many in a given period of time?

So, we would like to hear what the members think about this, and hopefully it will improve our discussions.

Also, if you wish to opt out of mentions, there is an option for that.

Have there actually been any abuse recently?

There was a single thread. It had some of the team suggesting a 5 or 10 member cap, but I believe that outliers should be punished moving forward, at least until the dust on the mechanic has settled.

I'd say give it a week or two to see what all happens with the system first, honestly.

Once that's done, you have somewhat of a baseline to work from.

That's the main idea, but generating discussion is still a good thing, and can help us as we move through said week or two.

Is there a way to just turn off tags?

I mean I feel mass tagging should be punished the same way mass spamming a status is

Which is to say, not

Only two counts of abuse and one were accidental.

I think it should be self-policed for the most part, create some guidelines but make them relatively soft and then make it only an issue if an individual has an issue with being tagged by someone else (in a spammy nature).

It's also important to note you can disable the tagging notifications in their entirety.

Yes, there is an option in settings to keep yourself from being tagged. Which I will add to the OP, as a reminder.

Mass tagging is usually an offense on servers and the like, and it's not a surprise that doing it on a forum is also considered obnoxious. Spamming a meme status 1/person isn't the same thing.

From what I saw yesterday, a topic was completely glitched out by too many mentions in a single post. I would suggest a flat 5 mentions max in a post to avoid this issue.

But the OP rn has 6, and there's no issue.

As I said, RPs, contests, and events are big things to consider in regards to this, because those also happen to be where the feature is most useful.

I personally believe that it seems more intuitive to just punish the abuse if/when it happens than to make a cap that punishes more legitimate uses and/or make exceptions that clutter the rules.

There was another? I only know the misc thread.

This is my general stance, for the record. Just happens to line up with how I want it to be. But what I want and what others want isn't the same, so a discussion is important moving forward. If I reply to you and disagree, I do want you to continue replying to show me your logic.

There is a method to cause a page to stop loading in its entirety and completely bug out, obviously, I will not divulge how to do it, but it has happened, now the benefits of the mentioning far outweigh the potential issue of the bug and more importantly it's not something that would occur unless you went out of your way to maliciously do it.

Interesting.

Well, it's good to know that it exists, and if we treat mention spamming as an offense then we should be able to avoid that entirely.

shouldnt be too hard to draft up some quick restrictions. making up a quick one right now: do not use mentions to harass someone else's notifications box. do not mention the same user more than once per 60 mins(multiple mentions of the same user in the same post is fine). also maybe you are punished only if someone else reports it and shows they've been receiving too many mentions from the same user, so that there's no punishment if neither side minds it.

Mentioned it in an earlier thread so I'll re-quote here. Maybe lower the limit to once per 20 mins, but the second half of it is more important.

To be clear, the topic did not glitch out because of too many mentions in a single post, but because someone discovered a glitch with it in a later post made in the thread. Not the same thing.

Other staff members brought up something similar, and I guess that this is worth a discussion.

The one that I saw in the mod forum was 5 minutes per mention of a person, but that left it open to pinging someone 12 times in an hour to be annoying. 15-20 minutes seems fair, though I do wonder if people wanting to be silly and ping each other back and forth is a thing... But!

The next part about leaving it up to if it bothers people... Well, that's fair enough, that seems like the proper direction to take it. In my eyes, at least. That also solves the issue presented with the time limit.

I'm in the camp for self-policing, just leave it up to discretion and don't get carried away with tagging. If a member is harassing you with tags, report them and either block them or opt them out of mentions. I can't see this devolving into an issue beyond one or two members who can stop doing it after being asked or from a slap on the wrist.

Interesting there are multiple different versions of the block

https://forum.yugiohcardmaker.net/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=ignoredusers

so may require some additional testing, very much doubt I can add it so you can block individual users mentioning you.

I had it set to ignore everything, PMs, sigs, posts, all of it, so probably not.

One more try, @ tag me
