Nintendo Labo

Earlier Nintendo teased something "crafted for kids and those who are kids at heart" and have now announced this. I can't say it's not interesting, it's actually pretty neat, but it seems a bit damageable (cardboard can be quite sturdy though so it just depends on how well this stuff is put together). The Project Giant Robot-esque thing definitely caught my eye, at the very least.

EDIT: Honestly I'm starting to get really excited about this. I think I'll probably end up getting the robot one. I'll put on the silly cardboard suit and punch stuff as an awesome giant robot.

Nintendo, known far and wide for pushing what technology can do, likely one of the more creative of the companies.

Bringing to us their most high tech invention yet.
Cardboard.

I'm....and I can't believe I get to use this word, flabbergasted.

I just know someone at Nintendo was working late and was sleep deprived and hopped up on coffee when they tripped over a cardboard box and, whilst laying there, confused, a bit frustrated, and possibly delirious, decided that that box would become their next invention. No matter what it took.

Is this stupid? Is this amazing? Is this silly? Is this weird? What?

Those are my thoughts. But to sum it up into one sentence, this is Nintendo. This is such a Nintendo thing to do. I personally lean more toward the "this is dumb" group, but I also can't help but love it.

Though I think the biggest question I've seen raised is, "how much damage can these take?". Kids are animals/monsters/destroyers of all that is holy so this can easily end up dying a lot.

It's a great concept in theory and it would be cheaply made due to it being made of cardboard and all. The only thing that worries me is how long would this keep a kid interested? From my experience, kids love flashly plastic things and also soft toys.

Also I am getting weird vibes here of a Wii game that was released ages ago called "Let's Tap" Same concept with the cardboard accessory.

I'm excited to see the cool things people put together for replacements since Nintendo will be selling replacement templates and stuff, you know people are gonna be custom-making their own stuff out of other materials, maybe even involve some 3D printing.

I'm reminded of all those clips I've seen on /r/Overwatch with people doing things like playing Winston with a bunch of bananas, Widowmaker with a baguette, or Symmetra with a microwave, because they've got this crazy wire setup and motion control stuff they've put together.

Also, "Toy-Con" is a great name for these.

So apparently you won't have to buy the kits altogether and will be able to purchase the games separately, according to a French IGN article.: http://fr.ign.com/nintendo-labo-nintendo-switch/33103/news/nintendo-labo-annonce-pour-inventer-de-nouvelles-facons-de-j

The important part is translated as, "Note that the kits will not be mandatory - although the cartridge is needed - since Nintendo plans to offer the cardboard design pattern for free for aspiring builders."

And I've absolutely come to terms with the price point, too. As someone who's worked on cosplay in the past, quality craft materials can get pricier than you'd think. I'd love it if this thing did well so Nintendo would develop more neat games, maybe eventually expand on how you can create new ways to play beyond that simple "drag and drop functionality options" programming thing that was shown with the cardboard man falling over.

EDIT: Hell yeah, found this from an article from the Verge: https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/17/16900496/nintendo-switch-labo-cardboard-diy-accessories-announced-price-release-date

"If Labo proves successful, it’s possible we could see more complex kits aimed at older audiences; Fils-Aimé notes that 'I do think there is an opportunity for this to go quite broad from an age-perspective.'"

And I'm getting a kick out of some of the jokes I'm seeing about this, too.

"Imagine how the board meeting went.

Executive: Man, Reggie, I got my kid a Switch and he ended up just playing with the box.

Reggie: WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?"

"AAA developers: Lootboxes!

Nintendo: Boxes, you say?"

Adults: (Looking at this) So how do I use it?

Nintendo: Uh, it's not really for you. It's for the kids.

Adults: Yeah but how do I use it though?

Nintendo: It's....for the kids.

Adult: BUT HOW DO I USE IT THOUGH?!

xD Honestly, that's how I saw this entire thing go down.

I'm a little curious why Nintendo is bringing back the advent of the cardboard box like this, but whatever works to rake in more money, I suppose. I personally feel it's wasting money, but then again, that's probably the adult side of me talking and not the young child who loves cardboard boxes XD

I'm not even sure where I stand on the spectrum of Labo haters and lovers. On one side, I stick to the argument that this youtuber brought up (mostly the fact that they expect minors to make the "toy-cons" shown in the trailer) but on the other side I kinda think this would be fun to have an play with, especially the robot and stickman. So I'll probably, maybe get it when it comes out if it turns out alright and it doesn't end up becoming the next virtual boy, but for now I'll stick to my regular switch, thank you.
