No, you don't need any of Higurashi to read Umineko. Both When They Cry are separated into two halves of four chapters (each chapter is long as hell), so Higurashi's first and second halves are When They Cry 1 and 2. Umineko's halves are When They Cry 3 and 4.

 

Don't forget to get the PS3 patch (it has god tier voice acting and the best sprites) before playing, though at worst Black will just PM me about it and I'll help.

 

Also, the first part is always what turns people off because it sets the stage for the murder instead of being especially tense, so just be patient the first 5-6 hours of reading if you get bored.

 

And Lambda is the best witch.

Heck, we have to pick up two halves. We only have the first half right now, but... We'll play that half first, grab the other half later on.

 

After playing Danganronpa, I don't think the length is going to really turn us off it. I've gotten into a big visual novel mystery kick, so I'm gonna make sure he gets through it, no worries.

 

I will definitely keep that PS3 patch in mind then. Is it just a quality difference, or were things lost between ports? I'm curious!

Both, absolutely. Real talk, chicken is my favorite protein, very flexible, so enjoyable.
