Let's Bring YCM Back Together

I've been on this site for nearly 10 years now. From 13 year old me (as Chaos Knight) attempting to print out fake copies of Ra so I could be a rare hunter to TEW of TCG to the Winter of Debates and General.

 

YCM has been through it's ups and downs, but I really do think we're a family here. An imperfect, snappy family that often likes to be at each other's throats.

 

Whenever YCM has been active, we've often done things site-wide. The Golden Age of YCM was a combination of C&O being highly active with groups like the Akatsuki. Then we had the revival of CC under Black and Lily. More recently in 2014-2016 we had a surge in activity in TCG/OCG with renewed interest in YGO with the DEUA era decks.

 

We enjoyed having some real inflow of talent to the forums in this latest era. Dueling Dolphin (RIP), Kaiji, Dova, XoXo to name a few. 

 

You could even say the Election of 2016 did wonders for General/Debates in it's massive upsurge of activity.

 

A common trend between all these is a sizable group interest in a singular focus. Right now we're really fragmented as a society, IMO, the best way to heal and bring the fringes back in would be to find something we can all enjoy together.

 

My idea, why not go back to our roots, this is YUGIOH Card Maker. The Original DM series is what made this all possible, so I was thinking maybe we can rewatch YGO DM (the Japanese version) with English subs as a community?

 

There's somewhat schlocky plot that we can enjoy, there's jap stuff for the weebs, and tbh, it's actually pretty enjoyable w/o the dubbing.

 

I'm open to any ideas, but organizing something like this saved a discord server I was a part of. We were all going our separate ways, and the head admin of the server had the idea of weekly movie nights. Nothing fancy, but it was something that helped us find a reason to stay.

 

Sorry if this all sounds sappy, but I really do care about this place and would love to see it return to some semblance of it's former glory :)

Yes definitely the original one can bring the basic idea of how Kazuki-san wanted the game to be. I dont even need to say that first season have dark magics that could totally eradicate ones soul. 

 

But i am not an old member so I can not say too much on the other stuff said here.

I like this idea! Could be a fun way for people who have never talked to each other before to interact with each other. Also, I've never watched Japanese DM, so that could be fun.

Honestly this sounds like a wonderful idea, though me personally I’d petition for either the DM dub (because the majority of us are americans and grew up with it) or 5d’s, since it seems to be a universal favorite and YCM began just before it did.

 

Its something to do and It might honestly get me back into yugioh for a bit, so I support it.

 

Reminder that we should probably find a legal-ish way to watch.

The problem with the dub is they tried too hard to make it PG-13

 

Death is replaced with "Shadow Realm" 

 

The voice acting is subpar, it's overly kid friendly

 

The Subbed version is more gritty and dark, and they don't omit important pl0x points to avoid offending soccer moms

 

There's a ton of Jap streaming sites that have the whole thing up.

If you choose to go with the streaming the series route, I would recommend trying out Rabb.it. It's a video sharing/streaming site, allows multiple people to watch a thing at the same time, syncing it up, all that good stuff. Sort of like Togethertube, but it works for a lot more than just Youtube videos.

I'm a dub person myself, as I A) I grew up with it and B) I find it easier to watch/follow. But, no denying that if the sub is much better regarding censoring and dialogue.

 

In any case, I'd watch the sub with YCM as a whole just for the sake of it. Would be a good opportunity to get to know some of you guys more.

Yup, I was thinking of that. That's where we have our movie nights on. I'd have to look into how Rabb.it works though. Normally I'm the watcher, I've never had to set it up before

Kaiba's voice actor alone makes it worth it

I do have some experience with it, use it a lot to watch stuff with Josh when we're bored, it's pretty simple though honestly! It does kind of depend on what site you use, some run better than others, and some don't run at all. If you're using a legal streaming site, that should work pretty easily though, I would imagine!

 

It's not really important, and while I agree the Japanese version is probably better, I never get tired of Pegasus's english voice actor.

In time, I figured it made the most sense to start with the first series rather than jump to #3

That's a good idea.

Used to watch it first in Spanish back in 2002, but when I caught up I also found it in English at the WB block that'd eventually become 4Kids's block. Even so, no amount of nostalgia does it for me. When I discovered the subs I found out how stupid invisible guns, the shadow realm, generic world domination plot inflation, and other things were.

 

I've always been bothered by how they can't allow silent poker-face moments. "oh no, what am I gonna do? (commercial break) I know, heart of the cards!".

Crowler vs Chumley in GX, a few Yusei scenes from 5Ds where he is stoic in the original and is thinking "oh no!" to himself, only to reveal he already had an out, making his character lose faith in himself and be doubtful on if his draw is gonna help, instead of as faithful as the sub no matter the opponent.... 

Atem too, tons of Atem smirking on his winning plays against Panic or Noah right after "I can't lose this, oh no!" moments.... 

Moments that I might add, sometimes extend past into the space that should be for explaining the cards.

The idea is great.
I suggest though, after you tidy up the details on watching schedule that works for the most amount of people and all that, it'd be nice to follow it up with a discussion thread much like the current Yugioh anime always does. I mean, this idea of mine is a little clunky since many people already have watched the series in the past which is more than just preview leaks or spoilers, and the game is so different that I doubt anything from DM will raise a lot of dust at TCG unless a dedicated bunch of people decided to go back in time with the game during the duration of this, and that's just not very likely to succeed.... but still, at least the thread part could work because not everybody interested will be able to tune in in real time..... 

Unless the stream in real time activity is all the plan intends, in that case, don't mind this post.

I may (or may not) have mentioned before that the only thing I have real experience with that has anything to do with yugioh is the anime (along with a handful of online TCGs), specifically DM and Zexal. I haven't seen the subs of either versions, so it would be fun to see them.

 

So basically, I'm all for it, though I may not be able to watch it on the times given since I'm in the UK.

Hi! I was on this site once! And I sort of came back a little bit recently!

 

I barely care about casting Curaga on YCM or using a Phoenix Down or whatever metaphor is appropriate...but Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters subbed!!!!!

 

So, first things first, that one website with the orange circle logo actually has YGO streaming. In Japanese. I'm serious. I'm not sure how many regions it streams in, though. (TCG card names are used, but that just lets you play the "figure-out-the-OCG-name" metagame!)

 

So, comparing the 4Kids dub and original version of YGO DM is kind of the most fascinating thing in the world for me. Like, for 5D's and onward the dubs are just straight downgrades, where everything is basically the same but not quite as good, aside from the bits of censorship. But the differences between the 4Kids and original versions are insaaaaaaaaaaane. And not always in a "4kids ruined it" way; there are places where they made notable improvements. And there are also places where the changes are just...weird.

 

Good luck scheduling this thing tho :P

Great idea. I remember trying to get a stream like this going, but back then the software wasn't as good and there was a lot of lag. Rabb.it is indeed superb.

 

I vote for Season 0. My timezone is Central European Time, which is equivalent to GMT+1.
