[Reading Discussion] What kind of stories do you like to read?

I generally try not to read anything if I don't have to, but if I have to read something I like Shakespeare and allegorical stories. The texts we read for school last year—Macbeth, Frankenstein, and Life of Pi—generally have guided my taste.

 

As if I didn't have enough of a napoleon complex, I sometimes feel inclined to write because no one else has written a story that quite satiates my need for a great story. Undertale came close.

 

As far as writing I can't stand, pretty much anything with bland characters and no interesting events, so basically slice of life. If it reads like a hallmark movie is written, get it away from me.

 

I someday hope to read Lovecraft's works because I could gain a lot of inspiration from them.

Fiction of course. Reading non-fiction or something too grounded in reality, is pretty boring to me. I'm surrounded by reality everyday. Scifi can be interesting, but I usually gravitate towards fantasy Adventure. But I will read ygo fics if it has OCs. I don't read fan-shipping fics or anything like that. Honestly speaking I prefer reading mangas/comics (of varying genres), but from time to time I might binge something on Wattpad or Tapas.

 

One time I read a random manga simply bc my name was in the title. And it was about playing the piano.

Agreed on not liking stories that are too realistic. I got enough realistic fiction in high school to last a life time. Exception would be CHERUB series by Robert Muchamore. Those involve British spies who are minors but in a way that's very realistic unlike the Alex Rider series.

 

Also, I don't want to read something that seems pointlessly tense. Just reading about characters suffering and not going anywhere with it isn't enjoyable to me.Thus far this has only been an issue in the occasional fanfic however.

 

I also don't like series where I feel the style or tone changes too much, unless its an improvement. *Glares at J.K. Rowling, and then runs from a giant angry mob*

 

Generally for me, if it was worth re-reading then it was good.

 

As for character's powers and power levels: What really matters to me is weather everything is too easy for them or if they struggle with something in order to make it interesting. EG, you wouldn't put Superman in otherwise historically accurate feudal Japan, where nothing would ever be a threat to him. Also you wouldn't make an OC who with no story justification can beat Knuckles in a fist fight without even trying, easily run circles around Sonic, and out invent Tails.

1. Most of the stuff I read is generally in third person. Then again, I have written some of my creative writing papers for college in first person. (If you guys want to see them, I can post them later; I do not have them on me at the time of writing)

 

Honestly doesn't matter to me if 1st / 3rd person; latter seems more natural because the narrator knows everyone's thoughts. With first person, you're limited to what they're thinking. 

 

Haven't seen anyone write in second person, but think that's a very rare occurrence. 

 

2. Would be nice to know who the main character is off the start, but then again, developing a wide array of characters is important too. Just as long as the characters themselves aren't bland or otherwise steal the spotlight from the rest of them (main ones), and yeah, keep the main cast small. I'll criticize ARC-V a bit; they brought in a lot of characters from the older series, but that didn't work out too well. 

 

I prefer more fantasy-based stuff (or more of an idealized reality, because the actual world does suck at times). Latter lets you go crazy with ideas, whereas former can touch readers more due to similar circumstances. In my case, current stuff I'm writing is usually fantasy but with some real elements (i.e. names of actual cities, people at university / classmates I grew up with, etc.)

 

3. Depends on the content; I can read a manga volume relatively quickly and maybe a short novel in a day. For long books, it'll take about a week or so.

 

(I also do not want to be reading an entire chapter of my course textbook every day, because half of the time, they skip steps that are important. That, and the instructor partially sucks, but I'll leave this for another topic/)

 

4. See answer to #3; depends on content. Most of the time I read fanfics because they have more stuff that I care to read. I'm not into certain mystery novels or whatever's popular with young adults right now. Right now, majority of the texts I read are from Asian authors (some of them were required course readings), so...

 

5. Lately, non-Yugioh fics. Think I'm looking for one that's Zootopia-based at the moment because of interest; I did read a few AltoShipping ones. 

 

I am writing a technical 5Ds hybrid fic offline, but that does have a bunch of non-Yugioh elements in there (and some overlap into ZEXAL mechanics for antagonists) so... Just for reference, I haven't actually written the latter part yet because of time constraints and motivation, given the lead up.
