j/k. Focal, well simply it's the part of the graphic which is meant to catch your eye first, it may be the only unblurry part or the face of the render *usally*. In order to make the banner easy on the eye and also "good", the focal should be big, but not too big. now if the focal was only the head (that might be achieved be copy visible then paste, blur the banner then earase over the focal) the banner might have been easier on the eye but thier is no much focal, the whole render, which is big, is the focal which is a bit hard on the eye since the focal should be what the eye fixes on.
