Ryusei the Morning Star
Two swing states are considering it A bill to end Virginia’s “winner take all” system of awarding Electoral College votes was approved by a House subcommittee Tuesday. http://wtkr.com/2017/01/24/bill-would-end-virginias-winner-take-all-electoral-vote-system/ And a similar one in Minnisota http://www.decisiondeskhq.com/2017/01/25/minnesota-legislature-considers-change-in-electoral-vote-allocation/ It's smart in VA cause Fairfax dominates the state and depresses turnout in the SOVA. Not smart in MN given that Trump flipped the traditionally democratic IronRange Stronghold If they were split by these rules, VA would have been split 6 EV to Trump 7 to HRC. He would have actually won more EV in Minnisota despite losing the state narrowly As I said above, these efforts are shortsighted. In the event the state turns back towards the Republican Party, they will lose several of the state’s electoral votes under this new allocation. Further, redistricting cuts both ways: if Democrats retake the legislature and and hold the Governor’s mansion, they could redraw the seats enough that a Republican statewide victory yields a bare majority of the thirteen contested electoral votes. Virginia is not lost, and MN was in the MoE. The alternate GOP candidate, McMullin got more votes than the difference. The GOP would be stupid to do this here. Doing it in Cali or NY would be smart, but not in swing states. Given both VA and MN have Dem govs, despite passing house and senate this bill wont pass. Still stupid of GOP
