why do you keep coming back?

I've been finding myself mirroring Winter's sentiments a lot lately when it isn't political stuff. Y'all are family to me, specifically the boys & girls (and probably an attack helicopter or two) dwelling in the RP section. I like the content, I like the users, and no other RP community really feels quite like this one. I don't think I could change sites if I tried barring some mass migration from here to some other inferior site. Even the lot of you that aren't in RP, I like seeing y'all around since there's so many of you and - dysfunctional though it may be - I really get a sense of community here for some reason. Other sites just don't do that for me.

It's... home, in a weird way.

I had nothing to do for the longest time, and YCM helped to fill that void. And this site has seen me change a lot; going on 8 years does that to a person.

Even when I tried leaving, I couldn't stay away. And I want to see the place improve. I've seen people I cared about come and go, and I've seen many I don't care for so the same. That's life.

The site isn't the best, but it's a place to roost.

I'm still into YGO, and make cards every now and then.

I like to keep an eye on the cards posted in the "Custom Cards" section since some card makers can come up with clever, interesting, refreshing and inspiring concepts, ideas, effects, etc.

TCG Section is where I get to learn about announced & released cards, as well as trendy or clever cards, decks, combos, plays, etc. in the metagame.

Oh, also I get to see cool stuff in the Graphic Showcase section, and hear about mangas, animes, games, etc., some of which I may find interesting, and discuss a bit about them as well.

I really can't say much, or rather, I don't know what to say, about the YCM community and my involvement with it since most of the YCMers I am or was relatively close with already left the site, and a few of those remaining are somewhat inactive lately, at least in the sections I hang out the most.

You actually did leave for an extended time. Was there some event that made you want to come back, or was it just on a whim?

Honestly, I was lurking on occasion, voted in a couple of polls. It may have been hard to think of something to say for quite a while, but I'm unsure if I can quite say for sure I even left... after just saying it a few days ago. Well, not quite, but I guess I really should count that as leaving. I dunno, just knowing that there are some people I do like still around, although quite small a number now that I remotely kind of know (CowCow is one of them)

The Switch did kind of motivate me to want to actually talk about some of my interests somewhere I felt comfortable doing, so there is that, haha.

Oh. I am referring to years ago. I wasn't aware you "left" again.

(Out of fairness, I did leave for 21.5 months at the end of 2011, though I didn't really plan to return)

I guess I'm still here for a couple reasons.

  • Actually people on here I talk to about common interests, unlike in real life, where people talk about stuff I don't particularly care for (and/or not the type of people I want to be associated with). In a way, my online social network is much larger than my RL one.
  • Other game I was on died out in mid-2015 due to the admin's "worse than YCMaker's" inactivity, and lot of guys I knew there quit already. So yeah, not really on other forums.

As to why I came back sometime in fall 2013, probably because I had free time to check email and saw the cardmaker got updated among other things. And yeah, I did miss this place a bit. If the former didn't happen, probably would've forgotten about this place after a while.

I had a lot of activity back then several years ago while I was here. I was still making some custom cards here and there (yes you can do that on this site), and I was still active a lot talking in General, TCG, and other forums and tried to step into the Creative area for a bit before quickly getting out.

Nowadays the tone of the forum has shifted, my only niche is in TCG, and nobody seems to care about what I say or do so I might as well not care a lot at all. People either left or shifted to do other things. In the end like most people here I'm here cause I just cause I got nothing else to do, but most of the time all I do here nowadays is browse and lurk through this site and see how much shitposts we got today.

It feels like I still have some kind of attachment to some people here and I'm curious to how they're doing, but in reality I'm just a YCM relic, and I've lost most interactions with people, with me only reappearing and reestablishing myself here and there.

I ask myself that every time I look outside the video game & anime section.

Despite the last year bringing with it a bunch of people I really would rather never interact with again in my life, there are people here I do like to interact with and this is currently the only means for me to do so.

Then again, I have skype, so I could just set up a group chat, but that's a hassle and also group chats are... yeah...

You know how in some series, the city itself that the characters interact in is sort of its own character? Like Gotham in Batman or Ikebukuro in DRRR?

YCM has basically become that for me. I'm interested in seeing what happens around here even if I'm not a key part of the community anymore. I've basically lived through around five different eras of the site and it's been very interesting to see how it's evolved and devolved over time.

This is my first forum, and I've learned I can't really keep up with more than one forum. This November it'll be 9 years I've been around and now I'm as old as the oldest member was back when I joined. People came and went and the site and game itself underwent many changes, not all of which have been good ones, but all of it has been experiences for me. I have too much history behind and I do care about the place. I'm a very nostalgic person too, so I still cherish even gifts from people that haven't been around for half a decade, and contact I've had with even friends that never reached 20 post count. I use my PMs to sometimes store things I want to grab again when I change computers.

Which is not to say I don't like things in the present. I have some great friends I did not know back then, and I know someday I'll miss these days too.
