Women now have to sign up for the Draft

Are men required to sign up for the draft? Because nobody's forced me yet in the 5 years I've been legal.

I've been registered since I was eighteen.  But I have asthma so the chances of me seeing combat are less than zero.  But I'm pretty sure we already get a LOT of women fighting.  Women in combat isn't new.

Lol yeah, but the last time they used it was vietnam, I don't think any of us were alive for it haha

It's more just a honorary thing, women are finally equal to men in something they've been fighting to get

When you turn 18, yes. Forgot when I had to do it (register for college), but know I did.

(I'm an only child though, so chances are that I won't have to serve unless I voluntarily sign up).

My dad almost got drafted though for Vietnam (because older brother has health issues), but we pulled out of it before then.

Back on topic though, I don't know why it's only men who were getting drafted because we certainly have women in the armed forces (Rep. Gabbard being one of them). Probably traditional roles, but I don't know.

Is there not one in Canada?

Not that I'm aware of...

From 1940 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the United States Armed Forces that could not be filled through voluntary means. The draft was ended when the United States Armed Forces moved to an all-volunteer military force. However, the Selective Service System remains in place as a contingency plan; male civilians between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register so that a draft can be readily resumed if needed.[2]

Thanks, Wikipedia. So I guess there's an "inactive draft" in the US.

The draft originates back to a time before women had combat roles, and there hasn't been a conflict in 40 years (Since 'nam) that's required a draft. It's not shocking that the legitslature would take a while to modernise.

On the other hand, I'd rather it be the case that the draft didn't exist because I think forcing people to fight for a cause they potentially don't believe in is counter intuitive in a modern military. I would rather see forced militia service because it's a more practical thing, teaching actual skills, and potentially encouraging people to serve.

I also don't think the UK has a draft, so there's a plus for me.

In practice this is true, there isn't any shortage of people eager to join in the US (for one reason or the other)

But as a second wave feminist, it's heartening to see happen

While I agree that there shouldn't be male-only conscription, I'm against all forms of military conscription so can't exactly celebrate this.

Pretty much this. I'm against a military draft but if women want to be in combat roles in the military they should be allowed to (If they can pass the same physical examinations as men).
