Admiral_Stalfos19
I was working on an app for an RP about a few hours ago when suddenly Tayla "sent" me one of those stupid baido links that lets people hack into your Skype... and it's the second one that I've got thus far. Ofc, the quotation marks are there for a reason; I could tell that her Skype had been hacked, and I've advised her to change her password and keep Skype on for as long as she can. I've been doing that myself as well. These same hackers had tried to hack into my Skype on Monday, but thankfully I was online at the time, and judging by a trio of what looked to be error messages that I got at that time, they would've failed miserably as a result. But I wound up looking at this exact scenario last night, and it turns out that like... a million other Skype users (hyperbolic I know, but there were definitely a lot of them) had this exact same problem. Some had even tried swapping passwords as well, but to no avail. The Skype team claims to have a solution on page 32 of the thread I looked at on the Skype Forums, which you can see here, but then you wonder why there's more than another hundred pages on that some thread. Now that I'm reflecting on what I've found last night, I'm genuinely concerned that I may have not done enough for a permanent solution... and that might even be an understatement :/ ... Right now I'm debating making a hardcore switch to Discord, but there are multiple RP chats that I'm in on Skype, one of which I'd hosted myself prior to the attack, and I also have family on Skype that I occasionally talk to as well. Alternatively, I can ditch the Skype account that I have right now and make a new one, although both methods will involve me having to reestablish my current contacts list. This is a hard decision for me and I'm gonna have to mull it over, but yeah... that's the situation I'm in right now. Any input will be appreciated, here. Flash Flyer - Sakura
I would recommend just switching over to Discord entirely at this point; least for the RPs at least. Are the other members in your Skype chats fine with moving things over, or they feel it's going to be too much? Also talk it over with your family members if they're willing to move on from Skype; you'll lose some face time (well, with video chat). I haven't gotten the error messages that you got recently, but that may be due to me not using Skype as much (heck, I haven't logged on for a couple months). Only reason I really checked it was for the 2099 format (when it still existed) and some minimal conversations with certain users. -----Just asking, how big is your contact list on Skype? You're going to end up re-adding a lot of people regardless.
Admiral_Stalfos19
I've just counted the total number of people on my contacts list thus far and it appears I have 48... more than I thought I had :/ Of course, I may not re-add all of them; there are some that I haven't talked to in ages. ... But yeah, I'll let everyone in each chat know of my intentions to switch, and ask if they're OK with switching alongside me so I can keep conversing with them if I need to. I can also ask my mum directly since I live with her for the time being, but we'll have to see what happens I guess. Personally I only voice with family and will only ever IM with everyone else, so I won't mind losing face time. And I'd definitely much rather have the stability. ... In any case, I'll report on everyone's decisions once I've talked to them.
Susie
Looking through the thread you linked the simple solution seems to be just asking when you get a weird link sent to you on Skype by your friends with no context whatsoever. Then they can say that they were hacked or whatever. I think this happened to me a few years back and I just asked the person about the link sent and they just said it was hackers. (GigaDrillBreaker)
Literally just don't click the link.
Maeriberii Haan
Literally just don't click the link. Wasn't the issue more about how the accounts are hacked and that fact showing how vulnerable the user accounts in Skype actually are?
(GigaDrillBreaker)
Stalfos seems to be under the impression that people are actively doing this. It is just a thing that happens if you don't click the link. If you don't click the link, there is no issue.
Admiral_Stalfos19
Yeah... about that... I might've clicked the first link I got sent on accident like a complete idiot. That may explain why I got near-hacked in the first place -_-

The Warden
I got hit because of a bot called "live" getting added to my contact list, which then spammed most of my contacts. I blocked it and it stopped, though at least nothing malicious got downloaded onto my laptop.
Yemachu
One of my contacts has sent me such a link, twice, and recently changed his username, pretty much save to say he's got hacked. Another contact sent me a message he removed before I could read it about the time these issues started coming up. Given the lack of context and little contact I assume they were hacked, thus not clicking the link. I wonder whether the hackers have acquired any valuable information. Either way, it is bad for Skype's image.
(GigaDrillBreaker)
Not to say Skype is a perfect program, because it super isn't, but stuff like this will be present in whatever communication outlet you choose. Discord recently has had issues with a bot that destroyed servers, for example. Stuff like this has been around since email was the primary method of online communication. The best defense against this stuff is just to keep your wits about you, and don't click suspicious links without good context.
~ P O L A R I S ~
Discord is the most awful user-hostile trash Instant Messenger I've ever seen. "CLICK ALL THE STOREFRONTS TO VERIFY YOU'RE HUMAN AGAIN".
