Reminder that third party candidates exist. Everyone, what are your thoughts on Gary Johnson? I'm looking forward to hearing from you YCmers about this.

i find him interesting simply because he's a 3rd party. my views align with jill stein and trump moreso than johnson, but i support him pulling heavily from both parties for 2 reasons

1) i want a 3 party system, and if he can pull from both parties, he'll prove there's a legitimate source of voters who want a 3rd party out there.

2) he pulls far more heavily from the clinton side than the trump side, meaning if he becomes a legit threat, the largest damage will be done to clinton. and i simply find that hilarious.

 

past that, i don't actually care much for him as a person, but him as the idea of a 3rd party. i don't hate or like him, i'm merely interested in him because he currently represents my greatest desires for the political system, which is for it to become 3 parties instead of 2

This is a pretty interesting story and a topic that I wanted to discuss in general. 1) What's YCM's stance on the cake bake. 2)Should you be able to deny customers service if it conflicts with you views. I've always thought that they had a right to turn down cakes for homosexual marriages if it went against their religion. Just like a jewish person should have the right to turn down making a cake with a swastika for a neo-nazi.

 

In the same way, I don't think this was wrong or should be punished by any means, its sad our community is divided so, but again not wrong. 

 

I was discussing this with my sister today, and she came up with the defense that the first 2 are infringements on religion, but this is a political denial of service so they're not the same. But I do think no service is a form of speech and needs to be protected so I don't agree with her view on that matter

Trump did go on a Russian funded news network for an interview where he then bashed the foreign policy of Bush Obama and Hilary, and defended Russia against the allegations that they hacked the DNC emails. That's defending Russia, on Russian TV against US intelligence. 

 

Even if the intelligence is a lie, you don't as a presidential candidate go on a news network funded by a foreign government who has historically been the US's enemy and call it out when your entire campaign is focused on 'making America Great'. It makes you look like a weak crony. 

 

So you can understand where comments about 'respecting all Americans' can come from. Ignoring the wall and the deportations and the general white nationalism Trump's movement spawns (It's not all of them, just like Brexit wasn't all white nationalists, but by God do they fall in line behind this sort of rhetoric quickly). 

 

And Hilary's comment is not that extreme - She first says it's a gross generalisation, she even acknowledges the other main reason people vote Trump which is disenchantment with the nation and talks about it in great detail. It's a comment in poor taste but it's not massively controversial. It's just another one of the stupid 'Trump supporters are racist' comments which won't win the election. It's satisfying to say, and has some element of truth in it, but it won't win the election.

1) It was silly of Donald to do it on RT, even though most Americans and I agree with what was said

Unless Clinton's fundraising speech was 'The US sucks' it's not the same thing. Technically if Clinton used her tv time on Chinese air time to get campaign funding it's much much worse, but Trump's comments are a little different. It is fine to say 'America is weak and we need to fix it' when talking internally. It's different to say that on Russian TV, essentially admitting directly to the enemy that you are weak. It's just silly coming from the 'make America great, I'll be stronger than Obama' to admit to weakness on air - Putin, the 'strong' leader would never do such a thing. 

 

I also think the whole 'oh we need a strong leader like Putin' thing is stupid because he's a dictator. It's really hard for a democratically elected head of state (A somewhat of a figurehead one at that) to appear stronger than a dictator unless the dictator is incompetent or the democratic one is a one in a generation individual (Or you luck into some massive unifying disaster like Bush did). Because a democratically elected government has an opposition in government, and in the case of the US it doesn't matter who the opposition is, they will oppose irrationally. More than that, if there is any opposition to Putin we will never hear about it because of the level of media access we get.

 

It's kinda silly to say 'I want a leader more like Putin' - Putin has control of his entire nation in a way essentially no other leader in the world has, and it comes at the cost of democracy and human rights. It's not something to aspire too. You can admire how he has control of his nation in the same way you can admire the Korean guys ability to keep a cabinet in line by killing them (Including his own family), but it doesn't make it something to aspire to or say 'I want our leader to be more like this guy'. 

 

Also your poll is from 2014 and Obama has increased in favour-ability since then. As in he went from like mid 30's to over 50% within the two year span. So there's probably a different percentage on that now.

I don't think he's supporting Putin like that. There is a logical case to be made that Russia is a natural ally for us thanks to Chinese expansion and radical Islamic rebels in Russia's south

 

Trumps point is that Putin is well liked and has stood for his country when Obama hasn't (debatable) for ours. That's really it. Pence pretty much said that today by calling putin out

It's a tongue in cheek joke about how Trump always comes across as needing to be the bigger man - Not in the humble sense, as in literally. He needs to be able to measure himself to them and go 'Yep, I am bigger'. So naturally his job now would be to big a bigger man than Hilary by falling prey to an even more disastrous condition and recovering more quickly. I don't expect people to respect him immediately, or at all if he doesn't follow through on his promises. I will be the first person to call out a president Trump who doesn't do as his promised, just as I call out Obama for not doing as he did.

Could his Doctor have issued a more Trump like  Statement? 'I can state unequivocally that Mr Trump will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency'. 

 

It dates from last year (And for some reason his Doctor has been monitoring him for 3 years that hasn't happened yet?) but still could there be a more Trump-like statement. He can't just be healthy, he has to be the healthiest man ever to seek the office. 

 

There's also no way in hell Trump is in better condition than say Teddy Roosevelt.
