Ryusei the Morning Star
Scary. Dangerous. Insane. Those are the words critics, including some key conservatives, use to describe Donald Trump's informal courtship of Russian President Vladimir Putin. For the vast majority of America's establishment, Trump's remarks are simply unthinkable. But what if Trump is on the right track? What if the experts are missing what's truly at stake for long-term U.S. national security? The recent announcement that Beijing and Moscow plan to hold joint naval exercises in the South China Sea next month is alarming given growing tensions in the region. While analysts doubt the detente will result in a formal alliance between the two countries, the move is clearly meant as a poke at Washington's dominance in the region. Russia, however, is hesitant to further China's territorial ambitions and, in the process, undermine its own national security. As a student of power politics, Putin understands that Russia could become the dessert on the menu for Chinese revanchism – a desire to reverse past territorial losses. Such an idea may seem foreign to most Americans, but a top Beijing objective in recent decades has been to erase past humiliation at the hands of colonial powers. Subscribe today to get intelligence and analysis on defense and national security issues in your Inbox each weekday morning from veteran journalists Jamie McIntyre and Jacqueline Klimas. In the 1990s, Beijing recovered Hong Kong and Macau from the United Kingdom and Portugal, respectively, and is now working to resurrect a 21st century version of its "lost" Southeast Asian tributary system. Asserting control over the South China Sea is an important step in achieving that goal. The main prize for the mainland would be "reunification" with Taiwan, but could China have bigger goals? As the New York Times recently reported, many Chinese believe parts of Siberia, including the strategic city of Vladivostok, were illegally seized by the czars. Though Beijing has "recognized" the current boundary, a more nationalist government in the future, driven by regime stability concerns and a hunger for resources, could focus its attention on Russian lands in the East — rich in energy and minerals and poor in population. This is where American and Russian long-term interests align. The greatest, most potent threat to U.S. security is an expansionist China, seeking to replace U.S. dominance in the western Pacific. Where this conflict could take us remains to be seen, but according to the Washington Times, Chinese negotiators argued during talks with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2012 that Beijing might even assert territorial claims over Hawaii. While this may sound ridiculous to the Washington establishment, one thing is undeniable — the emergence of a militant Chinese superpower in the coming decade would be a game changer. U.S. policymaking needs to adapt to meet this potential threat – from being shaped largely by our interactions with Europe to one defined almost exclusively by the Asia Pacific. Despite the Obama administration's "Asia pivot," America's elite remains largely fixated on Western Europe, a group of declining states with diminishing influence in global affairs. While NATO could play a crucial role in addressing the more immediate menace of Islamic terrorism, America's European allies are simply unlikely to view Chinese expansionism — even if it sparked a military conflict in the Pacific — as a direct threat. In this context, Trump's comments questioning the value of NATO or exploring a potential alliance with Russia do not seem so outlandish. While Russia's recent actions in Ukraine violate international law, Washington should consider its relationship with Moscow through the realpolitik lens of Chinese expansionism. The Obama administration's unofficial "containment" of China has been weak and ineffective without Russian participation. Beijing's flagrant disregard for the Hague's recent ruling that Chinese claims in the South China Sea are invalid is a clear signal that Beijing cares little about global opinion. Chinese revanchism is on its own course — likely in eventual conflict with both Russia and America. Washington can only hope to reverse this trajectory by reaching a strategic understanding with Moscow, sooner rather than later. As difficult as it may seem to the likes of George Will, America should avoid driving Russia into the arms of a superpower China, and instead focus on pursuing mutual strategic interests to help guarantee global stability. Foggy Bottom and its alumni should take Trump's comments more seriously. War with any nuclear power, including China, is frightening, but any measures taken by Washington that increases the probability of conflict with both China and Russia can only be described as scary. vla1ne
well, looks like this elections been going about the way i expected. still hoping for Johnson to make it into the debates, if only to make this thing completely historical. he's got the right idea about putting his numbers up, went from 1% to 9%, and instead of just hoping for the best, he puts his boots to the earth and doubles his efforts. whether or not you vote for him, you gotta respect that. the man getting censored for writing a negative article about Hillary isn't quite Orwellian yet, it's simply standard dirt tactics. you see an article that could harm your chosen candidate, and have the power to stop it from being published? you take the dirt road and scum it up. him making that video is f***ing genius. put it out there before you lose the chance to, and i'll bet he backs up his articles from now on. the man's a true reporter, he appears to value opposing opinions, and seems t understand the rules of the game. rare as hell these days so i applaud him. the new documents being found on hillary does come as a surprise, but i still believe as i've said elsewhere, trump, so long as he can control his own words from now on,(putting them in the proper context, articulating what he means properly, ect) doesn't have to do anything more until the elections, the democrats (hillary and many of her supporters in particular) appear incapable of not shooting themselves in the feet. if he can just keep track of it all, and use it properly, he'll simply erase her in the debates. the real dark horse of this election is Johnson, if he can make it to 15%, he'll be able to put himself on the national stage, and that's gonna throw god knows how many wrenches into the entire debate. my predictions though,(assuming she doesn't get arrested beforehand) are as follows: if johnson doesn't make it, and trump controls his words, he'll sweep in the debates and ride it all the way through to win the election. if johnson doesn't make it and trump doesn't control his words, he'll sweep in the debates, but have difficulty riding it out, i'd still call a win for him, but this would be the only chance hillary has at an upset. if johnson does make it in, and trump controls his words, hillary will outright leave the stage as a candidate, it'll be jhonson vs trump, and unfortunately, since there will indeed be die-hard hillary fans no doubt remaining, i don't think johnson'll have enough votes backing him to take out trump. he'll definitely be the strongest contender, but this isn't his scenario. if johnson makes it in, and trump doesn't control his words, then this will be the one scenario where johnson has the highest odds of winning. here, he can take votes from both parties, and honestly, if he makes it to the debates, neither party has enough on him to actually take him down unless they play a perfect game. he has enough ammo that if he does make it to the stage, he'll be the hardest opponent for either candidate to handle, but his issue will be making it to the stage. past that, we'll see some interesting things, but if he doesn't, i'm predicting a trump sweep. Aerion Brightflame
The debates is nothing new, Sanders and O'Malley dealt with similar issues several months ago. There will also also be a Clinton favoured panel, and the majority of the coverage after the event will focus on how Hilary won (Using specific clips to justify this viewpoint or demonize Trump). Objectivity in the debates has been compromised for a long time in this cycle - it didn't suddenly happen now that Trump is involved.

What's YCM's stance on the cake bake. Should you be able to deny customers service if it conflicts with you views. I've always thought that they had a right to turn down cakes for homosexual marriages if it went against their religion. Just like a jewish person should have the right to turn down making a cake with a swastika for a neo-nazi. In the same way, I don't think this was wrong or should be punished by any means, its sad our community is divided so, but again not wrong. I was discussing this with my sister today, and she came up with the defense that the first 2 are infringements on religion, but this is a political denial of service so they're not the same. But I do think no service is a form of speech and needs to be protected so I don't agree with her view on that matter If mods think this would be better suited for a FoS/PC thread then I'll happily move it :P------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9/8 Update So today Hillary mentioned that her emails had no headers suggesting they were classified, she forgot to mention she ordered the headers removed So...demographic based headlines are a thing now
