Immortality would be the world cruelest curse when you think of it. He had to bury his wife, sibling and all his children
Flash Flyer - Sakura
I wouldn't blame him; at that age, all of your friends that you grew up with are going to be long gone (by least a good 40-50 years if they had long lives). And yeah, he's had to live through a lot of the drama that came about over the past 145+ years, including burying his own family (and kids); that, and he's pretty much deteriorated in terms of strength. If they do confirm his age, suppose he can die knowing that he'll have set a record for the oldest person alive that won't be broken anytime soon; if he has any interest in that kind of stuff. -----To be honest, we'd probably all feel the same way if we lived to be that old (if we even get there) and had to deal with the hardships that come around. As much as I wish for a long fruitful life, living THAT long would be torturous (everyone you know is gone, the world will have definitely changed from the time you were young and a lot of other things, including physical ailments). Susie
I feel sorry for the man hes pretty much lost everything that hes loved and is too weak to really do a whole lot with all those psychical limitations. As for me on the whole immortality discussion id prefer not to think about whether I live long or die, I just wanna hold onto what I have while I still have it. Granted living too long would suck if you lived on just becoming steadily weaker and with immortality after the whole world explodes youd be sitting around waiting billions of years for something to happen (if that sort of immortality even happens). But im too afraid of a black screen of nothingness to really let my mind linger onto those subjects for longer than a few seconds or so because I can depress myself with thoughts like that and thoughts about living forever will depress me too. Zauls
Yeah, nobody should have to live to be that old. Burying your own children must be dreadful. Personally, I'm already sick of the world after 20 years, so I'd hate to think how this guy feels. Also, I don't get why, in general, medical practice values the prolonging of life over the quality. I'd rather live 70 years and be healthy and sane for all of them than live to be 110 but with 30 years of age-related problems.

MiracleGhost47
Let's not forget the environmental issues of immortality. It would be much easier for the world to be overpopulated under those circumstances.
bury the year
Not to be a skeptic, but the guy's likely full of sheet. Or at least has bad memory. The longest lived person that has been independently confirmed is 122 years (Jeanne Calment), so for anyone to have lived 20 years beyond that - particularly with no data points in between - should automatically raise suspicion. Plus, many of the documents required to verify these people's age were distributed mid- to late-life: at that point, it becomes all to easy for information to be falsified or misremembered. To quote the Guinness Book of World Records: "No single subject is more obscured by vanity, deceit, falsehood, and deliberate fraud than the extremes of human longevity." A polite message to not believe by default everything one reads.
Ryusei the Morning Star
Not to be skeptical, but I'm gonna be skeptical, because funk doing simple google searchhttp://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/worlds-oldest-person-man-mbah-gotho-indonesia-145-years-old-a7213191.html Ftfy Mbah Gotho has official identification showing his birth date to be December 1870

Aerion Brightflame
The Independant article does say that the guys claim needs to be verified independently before it has any credit, so it doesn't say that it is true either. It even cites other people who've claimed to be super old like a guy claiming to be 171.
Delibirb
While it would be emotionally painful to live to be this old alone, as medicine advances, it isn't out of the question that most people would live to this age, and in better condition, in the eventual future. ASI development can potentially help in that field.
