Rio 2016 Megathread

Well, I just got finished watching the entire thing (opening ceremony) for five hours. Granted, it's pre-recorded because Brazil is seven hours ahead of my timezone and all, but yeah. I admit that I would've liked the Parade of Nations to have come earlier instead of waiting an hour and a half for it to start, but the opening show was still nice (albeit really long for my liking).

As for the events in the coming days, not sure what I'll watch (since events I probably care about are likely going to be shown while I'm not home). If this were four years later (Tokyo 2020), then there'd be something that I'd have definitive interest in. I need to check the timetable for the events that I have some interest in watching this time.

(Come to think of it, I didn't watch the 2012 Olympics at all)

NBC coverage of the Olympics was a piece of sheet.

So I decided to put down my concerns about Brazil and watched the opening ceremony on my own and it was very entertaining and inspiring to watch...yet I can help that it would probably would have been less boring and annoying if, they actually stopped doing all these obnoxious commercials every 2 minutes and that the coverage was so saturated with poor presentation of countries, needless side talk, and random shots of team USA chanting USA.

Seriously, the ludicrous-ness of NBC can't be seen enough when you get annoying commercials of funking Tide commercials after a very astounding presentation of Brazilian history, especially since they got the rights to this, and it just ruins the involvement so suddenly. I get that this whole thing had to be pre recorded, but sheet, this would have been more quicker if this ran non stop and we didn't praise the USA so much. They literally stated that they weren't going to overshadow Micronesia's entry cause USA was next...but that's what they literally talked about Micronesia. And then they skip 5 other countries to only then do another commercial break.

While the commentary wasn't really obnoxious with excessive and u necessary dialogue and actually provided good facts, it could actually have been more informative if you didn't rant about this country being the selfie capital or that my parents have origins here.

I gave up after 10 while they only went up to D in the nation's parade. I'm sure reddit is more passed off than I am, but for me, I hoped that this coverage wasn't so focused on marketing and celebrity endorsement with Olympic commercials every second.

NBC tried to get the Olympic committee to have the nations ordered by English spelling rather than Portuguese spelling so that they would have the United States late in the broadcast instead of Estados Unidos fairly early. Just for ratings. Obviously, they didn't get their wish but it's clear that NBC is more focused on ratings and advertisement revenue than broadcasting a good, timely opening ceremonies. Can't blame them for doing what a business selling viewers to advertisers does, but as a national broadcaster, they're also technically supposed to be for public good, in which there's room for criticism.

I've been wondering if I should put this in the US Election thread instead since climate change is a issue in that topic too, but decided to put it here because Olympics. Discuss this until another event by Rio happens that someone posts about, if you guys don't mind.
