As the title says, which do you generally prefer? Added options for various media cause some, like me, prefer fantasy for some and sci-fi for others.

Because it only allows three questions added reading/writing as one question, please only choose one for reading and one for writing.

In general I find sci-fi more interesting to watch despite preferring fantasy on the whole. I feel like for a while all fantasy media felt the need to make itself like the Lord of the Rings movies back when they were coming out and huge. I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings mind you but I didn't want every movie and show to try and be like it. And thing's have gotten away from that somewhat and perhaps I don't search well enough but sci-fi shows seem better to me on the whole.

Granted I think I answered that with American media in mind. Bringing animu in probably tips watching towards fantasy some for me but I'll keep it at sci-fi for now.

But like in any other setting I prefer fantasy. Reading sci-fi bores me, I have no drive to write anything sci-fi and what sci-fi games i do play have a heavy fantasy presence to them. I likes me my magic and stuff.

For sure with Sci-Fi in terms of watching. I love Ghost In the Shell, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Serial Experiments Lain, and many others. As for reading/writing I dont read and I havent really written anything sci-fi or fantasy, havent really written anything in ages. In terms of playing im gonna choose neither, though there are a few Fantasy games that I occasionally play I dont consider myself to be a gamer because gaming isnt much of a hobby with me.

My opinion aligns with the doggy pretty much. While I am a huge fantasy geek, and I love reading and writing fantasy as well as playing fantasy video games (Uhhh hello Final Fantasy, Tales, Fire Emblem, etc?) I prefer watching sci-fi over fantasy. For instance, Firefly. Gawd that show was amazing and I wish it had more episodes. And Star Wars is of course an amazing classic. Sci-fi is just really cool to watch.

These are interesting questions, and not the easiest to answer. I prefer to read fantasy stories more than sci-fi stories... mainly because I haven't actually read very many sci-fi stories. Whereas I have definitely read a few fantasy stories that I really enjoyed. Generally I prefer pirate books.

The only time I've ever written stories is for school work so I'm gonna skip that question.

The other 2 questions are more difficult. I chose sci-fi for what I prefer watching because of Doctor Who and Star Trek: TNG, which I both love. While I have enjoyed watching some fantasy tv series I think I generally enjoy sci-fi shows more. I don't watch many films and there a lot that I haven't enjoyed very much, but I do remember watching half of that Star Trek film that had the whales and really enjoying it.

Now for games. I have played quite a lot of 'historical' games such as Age of Empires, and while they are related, those aren't fantasy. I haven't played very many sci-fi games but I have really enjoyed those that I have, mostly. Same goes for fantasy games I guess. While I currently am really enjoying playing Dwarf Fortress, a fantasy game, I'm choosing sci-fi here as most of my favourite Yugioh decks are more sci-fi than fantasy, especially my Psychic-Type deck. You never said what sort of playing so hah.

Another thing I think I should mention is that I much prefer drawing sci-fi scenes and figures than fantasy scenes and figures. I really like drawing robots and spaceships.

neither for me

i like grounded, slice-of-life with a light tone more than anything else so. sci-fi feels too complicated and high fantasy stuff is too silly

You can get that stuff and have it fall within Fantasy or Sci-Fi. They are just as much settings as they are genre. Especially Fantasy given we are seeing a rush of low fantasy nowadays compared to the decades of high fantasy.

OT: I don't really have a preference between the two. I guess I read a bit more sci-fi than fantasy, but I've no preference for either.

I definitely find it easier to write in a fantasy setting than a sci-fi - At least typical magic and steel kind of fantasy. The description just works more easily.

My one issue is that they are genre's plagued by tropes and a need to hit the same story beats constantly. It gets a little dull.

while that's true, i still find it more... idk, relatable and enjoyable when it's just really really grounded stories with settings that you can see every day. like wotaku wa koi ni muzukashi, taki takanosuke no sanpo jikan, and stuff like that. feels closer to heart without all the magic and high-tec stuff, you know.

Personal taste-wise, i prefer fantasy, however sci-fi always has elements I like from it. Though, as I'm mainly more of a fan of character-driven stories, I tend to lean to more urban setting along with light fantasy. The speculative futuristic worldbuilding on sci fi at times felt overwhelming for me if presented majorly on the narrative.

Seems a little more people like watching Sci-Fi, much more like playing Fantasy, and a good amount like to write/read Fantasy more. Interesting.

Probably because Sci-Fi is much more visual and often deals with more complex themes so people will be more likely to watch that stuff and also lets not forget that Space is often considered to be the modern replacement for Western. As for writing its way easier to write Fantasy than Sci-Fi because in Sci-Fi you often have to think through how things work much more carefully than in Fantasy.
