Help Me With My Quest

Arctic55

Question

Trying to convince my parents to get me a phone.  Please help me developed reasons they should let me have one.

Practicality
Both you and I are busy and it makes sense to be able to call or text back and forth to exchange details, arrange pickups, warn when a meeting or pickup is late, or convey other information.

Safety/Emergencies
Many things can happen, like earthquakes, fire, traffic, bad events, etc.  A cell phone helps us stay connected and let each other know that everything is alright.

Necessity
If I'm running late, if your running late, or if something unexpected came up, a cell phone makes it easy to let the other person know.  A cell phone also helps us ask and answer questions that might come up.

Responsibility
A cell phone helps me be responsible by giving me a way to let you know about things.

Contacts
Let's face it.  It's easier to stay in contact with someone over a phone rather than email.

Navigation
GPS helps me find my way around, and helps me navigate for people.

I would recommend reaching a compromise by getting an old model to start with. One that doesn't have excess frills and is sufficient for all the basic functions. Not only would it be cheap, no one in their right mind would steal it, and it will be sufficient for your parents to gauge whether you can be responsible enough with a mobile.

Of course, depending on how old it is you might lose out on the navigation bit, but the rest should still stand.

I never had a phone until a few weeks before I graduated high school but perhaps I can help.

I was given my phone on the basis of pure merit: I had managed to maintain a 4.0 gpa during that time and that was enough to convince my parents. Do you have good grades in school? Is money an issue with your folks?Do you get picked up by your parents from school?

1. Yes, good grades, mostly A

2. Money isn't an issue if they go Andriod, litterly free in our case(some reason they wanna go iPhone).

3. Yes I get picked up from school, I'm getting a permit this month.

If you're getting a Smartphone that's capable of playing Pokemon Go, also promise your parents that you won't be distracted by the game while walking like a lot of people are nowadays. If you're not getting a smartphone, then don't worry about this too much.

The only game I would probably play is Clash of Clans and PokemonGo, and not to the extent that it would become an issue.

To be fair, you should also convince your parents that you will only use it for its intended use, which is basically helping you keep in touch on the go, and not be like some of the guys I see in class texting their friends or something along those lines. In other words, promise that you will not jack up your parent's phone bills with texting and whatnot.

I forgot what I had to tell my parents when I got mine, but should've been similar reasons; need to contact you on the go when needed and I'm old enough / have sufficient responsibility.

For the most part, first three are fine because it does make sense; parents might tell you "oh, you can just use the public phones somewhere", but there will be times you don't have money to pay for the public phone, it may not work and surely people have touched "other things" before picking it up. Fourth one (responsibility) may need some work; yeah, you need to make sure you keep an eye on it (and make sure it's locked, otherwise people can/will steal it, then jack up your bill with bogus calls/texts). Contacts one should probably be left out, even though it is theoretically true (although both have their advantages/disadvantages).

I don't know what kind of phone you're getting (my phone doesn't have GPS in it), but suppose it may be fine.

In addition to what you currently have, convince your parents that you'll keep an eye on it at all times, use it responsibly (don't text/call people unless you have to, watch where you're going when walking, common sense stuff) and that you'll keep up with the phone bills if you have to pay your share of it.
