Mutant Monster RAEG-HAPYP
http://www.livescience.com/55348-massive-earthquake-threatens-bangladesh.html Now, obviously, we don't know if or when it could happen. But, given the part of the world this is, a magnitude 8 or 9 earthquake would be extremely devastating. I mean, no matter where it happens, a quake that massive will be devastating, but, when you have 17 million people crammed into a city whose buildings probably wouldn't be able to withstand such force, in this case, Dhaka, then the risk of massive loss of life is much greater, imo. Dad
I mean, we've been saying the same thing about the San Andreas fault for a long time. Not that it won't happen, but if and when it does, Lord only knows how many lives will be lost. Because you can't prepare for something like this. It's not a hurricane where you get weeks of advanced warning. It just happens. And when it does--not if--when, the world will cry.

It's not a hurricane where you get weeks of advanced warning. It just happens. And when it does--not if--when, the world will cry. Which is why the best thing you can do is be prepared. Japan has some of the most seismic activity in the world and unless they get huge quakes, you rarely hear about it. Unfortunately Bangladesh isn't exactly the richest nation so they likely won't be able to reinforce the buildings or provide emergency shelters in case of a disaster. If you're sitting on a fault line, you're better off to be prepared and not need your defenses than not be and need defenses when you don't have them. Also, Seismology can predict Earthquakes somewhat. Nowhere near as accurately as other disasters. Anyway, just hope nothing comes of it.

I just meant in the sense that you might only get a few hours of warning instead of say, six weeks. And preparing for a catastrophic event in that amount of time is extremely difficult. And preparing for a catastrophic event in that amount of time is extremely difficult. I mean at the very least the Bangladeshi Government now actually know it's there, rather than just randomly having an enormous quake. I somehow doubt Bangladesh as the type of nation to invest in disaster precautions, but that's just me.
