Story:

The Great Kami War is over, at the cost of Michiko Konda's life. Kamigawa enters a new age of peace, but it is not to last. Enraged by the suffering caused by Konda's negligence, a group of insurgent Samurai storm Eiganjo Castle lead by Toshiro Umezara's son, Kentaro Umezara. For the first time ever, the walls of Eiganjo fall and Konda is quickly and mercilessly cut down by Kentaro. Kentaro, declaring himself Emperor of Kamigawa, has seized control of Kamigawa and aims to bring all corners of the spiritual plane under his reach. Once again, O-Kagachi awakens from it's slumber and in an attempt to once again bring peace to the plane, summons the Kami once more to the mortal realm. This time, to defend the tribes of Kamigawa from Kentaro's bloody campaign of conquest. The second Great Kami War has begun.

Preview of new mechanics in Sunrise:

Honor - When a creature with Honor is the only creature you control, these noble warriors become twice as brave and gain new abilities. Designed with control decks in mind.

Enslave - The Oni and Goblins of Kamigawa thirst for sacrifice. Enslave the souls of your minions to make your Oni grow in strength.

Wait, so are you retconning the ending of Kamigawa's plot?

Also, Honor could easily just be the first clause. Sucks to have a mechanic dependent on what the opponent is doing.

As far as I'm aware, the end of Kamigawa was Michiko becoming the new Barrier. How it's intended for the 2.0 block is then Kentaro and others get pissed off that the entire plane went to sheet because Konda was a dickhead and decide to off him. Kentaro takes over and begins funking things up again, by being a control freak to the point of wanting everything under his beck and call. And yeah, Honor is changed to first clause only.

I'm having a bit of a dilemma on what colors Kentaro's cards will be. Originally I thought of him as very Black because of his lust for power and his violent revolution of Kamigawa, which also borders on Red. In Twilight, where everything is essentially flipped on it's head, Kentaro's controlling side is emphasized and he is most likely to be a White card, with the fact of him being the only Mono-Colored Legend in the set representing his delusions of grandeur, his "pure ideal" and how everyone who disagrees with him is clearly a threat to his continued lineage.

In Duskfall, when everything comes full circle and Kentaro begins to lose, he gets desperate and almost begins to beg for forgiveness when finally confronted by the tribes of Kamigawa. This time his card is likely to be Mono-Red representing his desperation to stay in control, relying on more and more brutal methods of keeping the populace in line, his personal emotions and love for his wife welling up and how he wants to protect her. Duskfall's lore is intended to end with Kentaro's castle being stormed and him killed by another character in a subtle twist of irony. Who this character is I haven't entirely decided, other than the fact I want them to be a female and I want her to have both personal connections to Konda and Kentaro, taking over him as the new ruler after he is killed.

Yeah, Michiko's the new barrier. The way you word it makes it seem like she's dead. I mean, she's still around and kicking, and still looks the same. Just, you know, now significantly more magically powerful.

And off who? Konda? Or his daughter, Michiko? Because Konda was already dead.

Also, Toshiro having a son would require some casual retconning too, since Toshiro got teleported to Dominaria pretty much straight after the Kami War.

Konda. I feel the original Kamigawa block ended in a bit of an unceremonious way. As such I'd personally want to retcon Michiko being alive, rather sacrificing herself to be the Barrier, putting more an emphasis on Konda's greed and foolishness. As for Toshiro and having a son, he could have been born before the Kami War and still make a bit of sense in the timeline, as Kentaro is a young adult when he seizes control.

Oh also Isamaru will be making a return, because everyone loves the doggy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I apologize for the lag in development. The final Blue rare is named Surge of Intellect and is designed around the Blue exile deck, designed as a sort of Brainstorm. On the whole Blue "exile matters" mechanic, I don't want to simply make more copies of Misthollow Griffon and the new Eldrazi dude you can cast from Exile, as that's not only boring but will likely push Food Chain over the top. As such, the deck focuses much more on blinking into the exile zone, tapping into Keiga's spiritual knowledge albeit very briefly. The Moonfolk were always more intouch with the spiritual realm of Kamigawa than the other tribes, so this is a way to emphasise that somewhat. The other Blue Rares have pretty much been finalized. Additionally, a little bit more plot. Each of the Dragon Kami have sort of unified the tribes they have control over under their command and are ruling small parts of Kamigawa against Kenshiro's government.

Yosei is safeguarding the remainder of the Konda forces and it's Samurai ranks, while wishing to face Kenshiro in a decisive duel if he were to ever appear.

Keiga is now sort of the teacher to the Moonfolk, teaching them to search for answers and resolve the war logically with minimal conflict.

Kokusho is harboring the Oni, allowing them to grow in strength in exchange for worship and sacrifices.

Ryusei is rallying the Goblins and is planning for a reckless charge onto the capital of Kamigawa, with little concern for the villagers.

Jungen is spreading Kamigawa's forests and attempting to section off the forest and it's Orochi people at their command, to keep the remainder of the world from contacting them.

Black Rares:

Ankoku, Kokushin Priest is a Legendary Oni creature with Grandeur to revive any creature from your Graveyard.

Blight of the Evening Star is an Arcane Spell that places -1/-1 counters on many creatures all at once, acting like a sweeper.

Kami of Tortured Souls is a flying Kami Spirit that forces an opponent to sacrifice a permanent when it enters.

Oni Blood Chief is an Oni with Enslave. Exactly how Enslave works is undecided.

Crippling Decay is a removal spell that will kill all weak creatures while leaving your strong Oni army undetered.

One with Everything is an arcane spell that allows you to pay life to draw cards, but you discard your whole hand at the end of the turn.

Oni Blood Pact is an Enchantment that revives a creature from your Graveyard, at the cost of life.

Shrine of Betrayal and Greed is an Epic Enchantment that switches control of creautres at either player's upkeep. A player may choose to give up a creature to the opponent, and if they do, they draw cards. Expect this to be used with some of the later cards in the block.

Kage's Kage is a spirit creature that has an ability to bring itself back from the Graveyard whenever another creature dies.

Kokusho's Worshipper is an Oni Creature with Enslave to drain life from the enemy.

Red Rare Concepts:

Kami of Explosive Rage is a 1 drop 4/1 haste creature that dies at the end of your turn, and also deals damage to both you and all creatures you control when it does so.

Temper the Flames is a Arcane Sorcery that makes 2 Goblin Tokens + The amount of damage you've dealt to an opponent this turn., designed as more of a "fixed" empty the warrens.

Akki Tribe Rampager is designed for a more midrange-y control based red deck. When it enters play, it deals damage to a target creature equal to the damage you've dealt this turn (to creatures or to players).

Rage of the Falling Star is an Arcane X spell that deals damage to all creatures and players. Very standard red sweeper, but is an Arcane to keep it from being a clone of RSZ or Earthquake.

Goblin Mystic is a Goblin that gives a variety of abilities to your other Goblins. Designed to synergise with the Akki Tribe cards, but also designed with Legacy Goblin in mind.

Blood of the Flame Dragon is an Arcane Sorcery that takes control of target creature and gives it haste.

Spirit Bolt is a 2 mana arcane lightning bolt, but can only target creatures.

Akiko, Spirit Tribe Elder is a Legendary Goblin with not only a Lord ability, but the ability to give Goblins Goblinshift. Designed mostly at giving EDH Goblin lovers a new general or something to slot into their decks.

Shrine of Anger and Passion is an Epic Enchantment that deals damage to a target on every upkeep, and provides additional red mana for the player controlling it.

Ryusei's Berserkers is a 3 mana haste creature that deals damage equal to it's power to a target creature when it dies.

Ransack is a land destruction spell. Not entirely sure on the rest of it's mechanics. Features the important plot point of Ryusei's followers attacking (and burning to the ground) a Yoseijin controlled village, attracting the attention of the remaining Konda Samurai and Yosei's Kitsune Warriors.
