StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game developed and released by Blizzard Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. A sequel to the award-winning 1998 video game StarCraft and its expansion set Brood War, the game was released worldwide on July 27, 2010. It is split into three installments: the base game with the subtitle Wings of Liberty, an expansion pack Heart of the Swarm, and a stand-alone expansion pack Legacy of the Void.

The game revolves around three species: the Terrans, human exiles from Earth; the Zerg, a super-species of assimilated life forms; and the Protoss, a technologically advanced species with vast mental powers. Wings of Liberty focuses on the Terrans, while the expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void focus on the Zerg and Protoss, respectively. The game is set four years after the events of 1998's StarCraft: Brood War, and follows the exploits of Jim Raynor as he leads an insurgent group against the autocratic Terran Dominion. The game includes both new and returning characters and locations from the original game. - Generously copypasta'd from Wikipedia.

[spoiler=Which Race is the best?]

While some races definitely recieve the majority of the complaints in terms of balance (hi protoss), StarCraft 2 is a relatively balanced game. The correct answer to this question is whichever race you like best. Listed below are a few of each race's general mechanics and statistics to help you decide in case you are totally new to StarCraft.

Terran:

  • Highest Skillcap
  • Workers (SCVs) stay with a building as they build it.
  • 3 Production facilities: Barracks (Rax), Factory and Starport (Port)
  • Highly flexible units like the Marine, Liberator, Viking and Hellion.
  • Excellent mineral line harass with the best drop unit in the game, the Medivac.
  • Bases provide additional map vision with Scanner Sweep or extra income with Calldown MULE.
  • Has two distinct playstyles: Bio, a build focusing on Marines, Marauders and Medivacs with minimal help from Hellions and Liberators in the early game, and mech, a late game centric build focusing on Siege Tanks, Thors, Widow Mines and Hellbats.
  • Buildings have addons, the tech lab, which provides tech and allows for advanced construction, and the reactor which allows 2 units to be made at once.
  • Produces Units slower than their Protoss and Zerg counterparts overall, struggles the most when remaxing.
  • Buildings can lift off and move around, making walling easy, it's also possible to switch addons.
  • Best Music

Unit quality often described as being in the middle of the two Xenos races.

Zerg:

  • Highest APM requirements
  • Workers (Drones) sacrifice themselves to morph into buildings.
  • 1 Production Facility: Hatchery, which can become a Lair/Hive later in the game.
  • Can produce any number of units at the same time provided they have Larvae, which naturally spawn at Hatcheries. Queens can also inject Larvae into Hatcheries, massively increasing the amount of unit production.
  • Highly base and economy focused.
  • Weakest at Rushing and/or Cheese.
  • Unable to wall off.
  • Has to manage Creep, which speeds up Zerg units on it and provides vision. Can be spread with Queens, Creep Tumors and Hatcheries.
  • Weakest Units overall, often pidgeonholed into one type of unit for each job, unlike the flexibility of Terran.
  • Fastest remax overall.
  • Regarded as the hardest race to play overall.
  • Has very strong abilities like Abduct, Fungal Growth, Infested Terran, Neural Parasite and Banelings
  • High end units often regarded as underpowered, Ultralisks much better in LOTV, Brood Lords still very situational.

Protoss:

  • Easiest Race to play overall.
  • Workers (Probes) begin a building warp in and then are free to move
  • Best Macro in the game
  • 3 Production Facilities: Gateway (Gate), Robotics Facility (Robo) and Stargate.
  • Best and most wide variety of cheese avaliable.
  • Highly efficient units like the Stalker.
  • Units more expensive but more survivable than Terran and Zerg due to Plasma Shields.
  • Has to manage Chronoboost.
  • Can warp in units anywhere with power, provided by Pylons.
  • Can reach a critical mass of units where your army is almost unkillable (Protoss Deathball)
  • Mothership Core is the best unit in the game for it's cost.
  • Often restricted to timing attacks.
  • Walls off easily, but finds it hard to get out of it's own base if doing so.
