Yu-Gi-Oh! Rulings Questions

Does Mermail - Abyssturge's effect activate if there are no applicable targets in the graveyard?

And on a related note: Do the Atlanteans and Mermail Abyssgunde/hilde activate if they leave the graveyard in the same chain they were sent to the graveyard? An example would be if I used Abyssturge to discard and return the same Mermail Abyssgunde.

[spoiler=Sample text] Mermail Abyssturge

When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can discard 1 WATER monster to target 1 Level 3 or lower WATER monster in your Graveyard; add that target to your hand. The effect of "Mermail - Abyssturge" can only be activated once per turn.

Mermail Abyssgunde

If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 "Mermail" monster from your hand, except for "Mermail - Abysshilde". The effect of "Mermail - Abysshilde" can only be activated once per turn.

You can't activate the effect ofMermail Abyssturge if there's no level 3 or lower water monster on your grave, just like Zombie Master or Lumina.

Also if you sent a monster like Abyssgunde with Mermail Abyssturge to graveand add to hand the same Abyssgunde, you should be able to activate the effect of Abyssgunde

after the current chain finishes since Abyssgunde can't miss the timing.

Toons like TBEWD and TSkull have this ruling for Tributes.

Since it's not a normal Tribute Summon you can also make use of Tokens from cards like "Scapegoat" and "Fires of Doomsday".

TBEWD, TSkull, and Toon Mermaid have this clause:

You can Special Summon this card from your hand (but Tributes are required if it is Level 5 or higher).

In the case of TBEWD, since it's a Special Summon and NOT a Tribute Summon, do I need 1 monster or 2?

Toon Blue Eyes White Dragon is Level 8. It will require 2 Tributes.

For Toons, you STILL have to tribute monsters based on it's level. It's just considered a Special Summon instead of a Normal Summon, so you can summon more than one per turn if you have enough monsters to tribute.

Galaxy-Eyes attacks Utopia. What happens?

Utopia is a Trigger Effect. Trigger Effects have the first right to activate when an action occurs. Utopia can activate as Link 1 before Galaxy-Eyes may use its effect, and Galaxy-Eyes may chain its Quick Effect as Link 2.

The chain then resolves:

Galaxy-Eyes will banish both monsters. They will return when the Battle Phase ends, and Galaxy-Eyes will gain 500 ATK (Utopia detached 1 as a cost).

Is there a difference between "discard" and "discard to the Graveyard"? Or is it a rewording because of PSCT?

(For example, Cost Down has the former, while Abyss Soldier has the latter).

Because Abyss Soldier specifically says to discard to the graveyard, if something prevents that (Macro Cosmos and the like) then you cannot activate the effect since the card can't go to the graveyard.

Under normal circumstances, "Discard" as a cost will not matter where the card is actually sent to, and therefore can still be used even if something is banishing the cards instead. However, the more specific "Discard to the Graveyard" (as seen on Brionac) requires that the card is actually placed into the Graveyard in order to fulfill the cost.

Do you HAVE to detach a Material for Acid Golem, or can you choose to take the 2000 damage?

You may choose. It's a choice of which action to take, but activating the effect is mandatory.

(If it required you to detach without a choice, it'd say something like "During your Standby Phase: Detach 1 Xyz Material from this card. If you cannot, you take 2000 damage")

THE TYRANT NEPTUNE tribute summoned by tributing Hardened Armed Dragon. Offering to the Snake Deity targeting it and 2 opponent cards. Does it destroy them and leave NEPTUNE?

Ordinarily, I'd think "yes", but the ruling on Wiki says that if Offering cannot destroy 1 of the targets, none of them are destroyed.
